India Smartphone Sector Stagnant in Q3 2023, Realme Overtakes Vivo in Market Share: IDC

A recent research states that sluggish performance in the quarter caused India’s smartphone market to remain flat year over year in Q3 2023 with shipments of 44 million units. Its forecast for the market in 2023 suggests that shipments will remain steady or decline slightly. The research adds that the first two months of the third quarter, July and August, saw single-digit growth as the channels began early seasonal stocking. However, September saw the lowest shipments since 2019 due to dwindling demand and high prices.

A report by International Data Corporation (IDC) says that the Indian smartphone market maintained a flat 44 million units of shipments in Q3, resulting in a flat growth on a year-on-year basis. The ASP (average selling price) increased by 12 percent YoY and 5 percent QoQ (quarter-over-quarter) and peaked at $253 (roughly Rs. 21,000).

The report noted that vendors across all channels, online and offline, prioritised budget 5G smartphones over others. 5G smartphone shipments accounted for 25 million units, setting a record 58 percent share. Since most 5G models were released in the mass budget bracket ($100 < $200 (roughly Rs. 8,300 < Rs. 16,700)), the segment’s 5G share has increased from 34 percent to 52 percent. The top three 5G models shipped in the third quarter of the year were Apple’s iPhone 13, Xiaomi’s Redmi 12, and Samsung’s Galaxy A14.

Samsung overtook Vivo as the most popular brand, despite a YoY fall in shipments. Among the top five brands, Samsung had the highest ASP at $381 (roughly Rs. 31,700), increasing 43 percent year over year. The report also noted that with the help of the recently released Realme C53 and Realme 11x, the Chinese brand rose to the second position. With the exception of iQoo, Vivo had the fastest growth among the top five brands, thanks to its reasonably priced Vivo Y and Vivo T series phones. Poco and OnePlus both saw YoY growth of 50 percent or more, with the OnePlus Nord CE3 Lite accounting for 35 percent of shipments.

In just one quarter, shipments of foldable phones reached a record 500,000 units, with Samsung holding a 66 percent market share. The average selling price of foldable phones dropped from $1,319 (roughly Rs. 1,09,800) to $1,198 (roughly Rs. 99,800) from a year ago owing to new releases by Motorola at cheaper price points.

Shipments via offline channels grew by double digits in Q3 2023 and remained bigger than online channels. According to the report, a number of eTailer events (like Amazon Great India Festival and Flipkart’s Big Billion Days) with exclusive online deals and special platform pricing helped boost demand online.

India Smartphone Shipments Fall 3 Percent YoY in Q3, Samsung Retains Leadership: Canalys

Smartphone shipments in India declined 3 percent year-on-year (YoY) for the July-September period (Q3) in 2023, shows a new report by market research firm Canalys. Despite the fall, Samsung continued to lead the smartphone market with 7.9 million shipments and 18 percent market share. The South Korean company launched its Galaxy S23 series early this year and the flagship phones have apparently helped grow its market share. Xiaomi is in a close second spot, followed by other Chinese smartphone brands including Vivo, Realme, and Oppo in the top five places. Upcoming festival sales and improved consumer confidence are expected to lead to positive growth in the coming months.

Analyst firm Canalys said in its latest report that 43 million smartphones were shipped in India in the third quarter of 2023. The figure marks a 3 percent drop in year-on-year shipments.

Following past trends, Samsung enjoyed a major share of India’s smartphone shipments and maintained its top position in Q3 with a market share of 18 percent and a shipment of 7.9 million units. Xiaomi advanced to the second position by shipping 7.6 million units. The Chinese brand has grabbed 21 percent of the market share primarily fueled by the release of its affordable 5G models. Vivo came third with 7.2 million shipments and a 16 percent market share. Other BBK subsidiaries, Realme and Oppo came in fourth and fifth, respectively. Realme shipped 5.8 million units and got a 14 percent market share, while Oppo shipped 4.4 million units and received a 12 percent market share.

Canalys notes that brands promoted their festive product lineup with a focus on the budget-friendly 5G smartphone segment. Xiaomi expanded its 5G portfolio with the launch of budget-friendly models like the Redmi 12 5G and Poco M6 Pro 5G, contributing to the growth of 5G offerings in their lineup. Realme also gained traction in the market with its Realme 11x 5G and Realme 11 5G models. Brands like Motorola, Infinix and Tecno also drove limited volume through their new affordable 5G devices.

The premium smartphone segment also witnessed robust growth in the just-ended quarter, as per the report. Sales of Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series and Apple’s iPhone 14, and iPhone 13 lineup surged during the festive sales driven by online sale offers.

Canalys observes that increased consumer confidence and the launch of new handsets will likely help the market move toward gradual recovery. “Despite the market gaining consumer confidence in the second half, the road to recovery will be challenged by global economic concerns,” said Canalys senior analyst Sanyam Chaurasia. “The growth in 2024 hinges on uncertain macroeconomic factors, particularly affecting the vulnerable entry-level segment. However, the Indian economy remains relatively resilient to sudden shocks from these variables and brands are adapting to market dynamics. To maintain market share, vendors should prioritise reducing channel pressures and building a lean product portfolio. They should have ‘hero models’ in each price segment while maintaining balanced inventories across channels” he added.

iPhone 13 to Be Available Under Rs 40,000 During Amazon Great Indian Festival Sale

The Great Indian Festival Sale 2023 is set to kick off on October 8, and ahead of the sale commencement, Amazon is dropping deals for consumers. The latest in the series is a deal around the iPhone 13, which brings it down to under Rs 40,000 (effective price). However, this price includes an exchange offer for consumers, which means if you do not opt for an exchange, the iPhone 13 might come at a slightly higher price than what’s teased during the sale.

Launched in 2021, the iPhone 13 is currently retailing at Rs 59,900 for the 128GB storage model, Rs 69,900 for the 256GB model and Rs 89,900 for the 512GB model. This means that the upcoming Amazon Great Indian Festival Sale will offer a discount of up to Rs 20,000 on the official MOP of the iPhone 13.

iPhone 13 at under Rs 40,000? Here’s a deal breakdown

During the Amazon Great Indian Festival Sale 2023, interested customers can get their hands on the iPhone 13 at its lowest price. But how? The deal breakdown offered by Amazon promises a deal price which is likely to be lower than the Rs 59,900 pricing. Further, if customers use SBI Bank Debit and Credit cards, an additional Rs 1,500 will be offered as a maximum discount. During the Amazon Great Indian Festival Sale, SBI Bank customers can avail 10 percent instant discount on purchases on mobiles which has an upper limit of Rs 1,500, while other categories have an upper limit of Rs 1,750.

Customers who have an old device (working smartphone) to exchange will get extra off, as teased by Amazon, which will be over and above the value of the phone being exchanged. However, not everyone will have a phone to exchange, so we can assume that a bank offer is what a lot of people will be opting for. Nevertheless, combining the deal price, bank discount and extra off on exchange, Amazon claims an effective price of under Rs 40,000 for the iPhone 13.

It’s worth mentioning that the deal will only hold for a limited time. As always, we expect Amazon to bump the deal pricing of the iPhone 13 as demand surges and depending on the available stocks.

Apart from the iPhone 13, we can expect Amazon to offer discounts on other iPhone models like iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, and iPhone 14 Pro during the Great Indian Festival Sale 2023.

OnePlus recently launched its first tablet in India, the OnePlus Pad, which is only sold in a Halo Green colour option. Eight iPhone Models Emerged as Best-Selling Smartphones in 2022, iPhone 13 Topped the List: Counterpoint

2022 has been a remarkable year for Apple, according to a new report by a market research firm. The Cupertino-based tech giant continued to enjoy the lead in worldwide smartphone shipments with eight of its models featuring in the list of top 10 best-selling smartphones. Launched in 2021, the iPhone 13 emerged as the best-selling model, followed by the iPhone 13 Pro Max, and iPhone 14 Pro Max at second and third positions respectively. The list also includes iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 12, iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone SE (2022). Samsung was represented in the top-10 list two entry-level Galaxy A series smartphones.

Market research firm Counterpoint Research in its latest Global Monthly Handset Model Sales Tracker report has listed the iPhone 13 as the best-selling phone of 2022. Launched in 2021, the smartphone powered by Apple’s A15 Bionic chip contributed to 28 percent of iPhone sales. The surge in demand for the old iPhone 13 series model is attributed to the price cuts post the launch of the iPhone 14 series in September last year. It was the best-selling smartphone in China, France, Germany, the US, and the UK.

While iPhone 13 Pro Max took the second spot, the new iPhone 14 Pro Max came in third place. Counterpoint noted that the Pro Max variant of an iPhone series drove more volume than its Pro and base models in 2022. Samsung’s budget offering Galaxy A13 occupied the fourth spot with the iPhone 13 Pro coming in a close fifth position.

The iPhone 12 took the sixth spot, followed by the new iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro at seventh and eighth positions respectively. Apple’s budget offering, the iPhone SE (2022), grabbed the ninth position, while Samsung’s Galaxy A03 rounds off the top-ten list.
