iPhone 16 Lineup Could All Feature an A18 Chip, iOS 18 Code Reportedly Suggests

Apple packed ‌an older A16 chip on the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models this year, while the top-of-the-range ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ and iPhone 15 Pro Max debuted with an all-new A17 Pro chip. Now, early leaks indicate that the Cupertino-based tech giant will use an A18 processor in all iPhone 16 models. Early development versions of the iOS 18 operating system reportedly include references to four new iPhone models with an A18 chip.

As per a report by Macrumors, early development versions of the iOS 18 operating system contain references to four new iPhone models. These models, believed to be the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max, are reportedly internally referenced as D47, D48, D93, and D94, respectively.

The codes from iOS 18 reportedly indicate that Apple will pack a new SoC – t8140 – Tahiti in the entire ‌iPhone 16‌ range. This codename is said to be associated with the A18 chip. This corroborates earlier rumours.

Apple’s recent iPhone 15 series and iPhone 14 series have used different chipsets for the non-Pro and Pro models. The company used older generation SoCs in its lower-priced iPhone units in 2023 and 2022. The ‌iPhone 15‌ runs on an older A16 Bionic chip from the iPhone 14 Pro, while the ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ models are powered by a new A17 Pro chip with an additional GPU core and increased clock speed.

If all four iPhone 16 models are to use an A18 chip in 2024, it won’t be the same one, as per the report. Apple is said to differentiate the chips used on iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models by using A18 and A18 Pro branding. Besides the A18 chip, the operating system reportedly has reference to Broadcom Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules.

The rumoured iPhone 16 series is expected to come with a dedicated button for taking videos. This mysterious button is expected to be called as “Capture Button”. The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models would feature the new Action Button, which is currently exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro models. The Pro variants are said to have larger displays than the iPhone 15 Pro models.

iPhone 15 Pro Packs a Bigger Battery Than iPhone 14 Pro, Reveals Teardown

iPhone 15 series was unveiled on September 12, with sales of the models starting from September 22. The lineup includes four models – iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max. The company claims that the Pro model offers up to a full day of use on a single charge. Even though Apple did not mention the battery capacity of the model, a teardown shows that it carries a larger battery than the preceding iPhone 14 Pro.

According to a video shared by the YouTube channel PBK Reviews, the iPhone 15 Pro carries a larger battery than the iPhone 14 Pro. As per regulatory listings, the battery of the iPhone 15 Pro is rated at 3,274mAh, while the preceding model had a battery rated at 3200mAh. Despite the difference, Apple claims that the newer model offers a battery life of up to 23 hours, the same as the older one. It is, therefore, speculated that the added capacity is used in some heavy internal functioning.

iPhone 15 Pro sports a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with a peak brightness of 2,000 nits. It is powered by a 3nm chipset A17 Pro SoC. It also features a 48-megapixel sensor with a wide-angle lens, a 12-megapixel sensor with an ultra-wide-angle lens, a 12-megapixel 3x telephoto camera at the back and a 12-megapixel TrueDepth camera sensor in the front. The phone arrives with an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance.

Offered in Black Titanium, Blue Titanium, Natural Titanium, and White Titanium colour options, the 128GB variant of the iPhone 15 Pro is priced at Rs. 1,34,900, while the 256GB and 512GB variants are listed at Rs. 1,44,900 and Rs. 1,64,900, respectively. The top-of-the-line 1TB model is priced at Rs. 1,84,900.

Notably, the iPhone 14 Pro has been discontinued in India. It was introduced at an initial price of Rs. 1,29,900 for the 128GB variant after its 2022 launch.

iPhone 15 Pro Rear Glass Replacement Is Now Much Cheaper and Easier Compared to iPhone 14 Pro: Details

iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max — Apple’s high-end iPhone models that were launched last week as part of the iPhone 15 lineup — will support cheaper and easier rear glass replacements, according to the company’s support website. Thanks to a change in how the company built the two new smartphones, the cost of repairing the rear panel has dropped by a considerable amount, and is now on par with the standard models in the iPhone 15 and iPhone 14 series of smartphones.

According to Apple’s own support website, the cost of replacing the rear glass panel on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will cost $169 (roughly Rs. 14,100) and $199 (roughly Rs. 16,600), respectively. This is much cheaper than the cost of repairing the rear panel on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max — $ 499 (roughly Rs. 41,600) and $549 (roughly Rs. 45,750), respectively.

By changing the way it manufactures the body of the new iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, Apple has made it easier to replace the rear panel of the handset (via 9to5Mac). The glass panel on the back of the handsets will be easier to remove than their predecessors. Customers who have AppleCare+ coverage will be able to repair their rear glass panel for $29 (roughly Rs. 2,400).

Readers might recall that the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus that were announced at the company’s ‘Far Out’ event in September 2022 were also equipped with an easily removable glass panel. It appears that the changes to the chassis also made their way to the Pro models this year. Apple has equipped the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max with a titanium chassis instead of the stainless steel material used on its predecessors.

Back in 2022, Apple allowed authorised technicians to repair the TrueDepth camera on its handsets all the way back to the iPhone X, without replacing the entire smartphone. The mechanism used by Apple’s Face ID biometric authentication system a flood illuminator, dot projector, front camera, and an infrared (IR) camera — repairing the array of sensors was previously impossible without replacing the entire device.

iPhone 14 Pro Series, iPhone 13 Mini, iPhone 12 Discontinued in India After iPhone 15 Series Launch

Apple unveiled the much-awaited iPhone 15 series on Tuesday, September 12 at its ‘Wonderlust’ event. The Cupertino-based tech giant has the habit of phasing out older products from its portfolio as new models are introduced. This year too, immediately after the debut of the new lineup, Apple has discontinued some older iPhone models in India to make way for the latest iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

The models that have been discontinued are the iPhone 12, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. The iPhone 14 Pro Max, last year’s high-end model was launched with a starting price tag of Rs. 1,39,900. Now, the handset is no longer listed on Apple’s India website. The withdrawal of the iPhone 14 Pro Max would make way for the new iPhone 15 Pro Max. Similarly, the iPhone 14 Pro has also been discontinued from Indian market. The handset was unveiled at the ‘Far Out’ event last year with an initial price tag of Rs. 1,29,900 for the 128GB storage option. Meanwhile, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus remain on sale in India at reduced prices.

Apple has also phased out the iPhone 13 mini (Review) to make more room for the new iPhone 15 models. The iPhone 13 mini was the cheapest model in the company’s 2021 iPhone series with a starting price tag of Rs. Rs. 69,900 for the 128GB storage model. It debuted as an alternative for people who were looking for a small flagship iPhone. It shares multiple similarities with the iPhone 13, albeit with a smaller display. However, the vanilla model is currently listed on Apple’s India website.

The withdrawal of the iPhone 13 mini will make the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 14, iPhone 13, and iPhone SE (2022) as company’s smaller-sized phones.

Apple also quietly dropped the iPhone 12 from its lineup too. The oldest model of the bunch was launched back in 2020 with a starting price tag of Rs. 59,900 for the base 128GB storage.

Users will not be able to purchase the iPhone 12, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max from Apple. However, one can still buy these handsets from third-party retailers and e-commerce sites like Amazon and Flipkart. They should also be available at brick-and-mortar stores until their stocks last.

The price of the iPhone 15 in India starts at Rs. 79,900 while the iPhone 15 Plus is priced at Rs. 89,900. Meanwhile, the iPhone 15 Pro pricing starts at Rs. 1,34,900, and the iPhone 15 Pro Max starts at Rs. 1,59,900. They are currently up for pre-orders in India with sales set to begin on September 22.

iPhone 15 Pro Models May Cost Up to $200 More Than iPhone 14 Pro Variants: Report

iPhone 15 family— including the vanilla iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max — could be unveiled sometime in September. This year, the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models are anticipated to be more expensive than the previous Pro models, and a new claim by a Barclays analyst corroborates this rumour. The vanilla iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will have the same price tag as the outgoing models. The iPhone 15 Pro is said to get new cameras and a faster chipset compared to the non-Pro models.

As reported by MacRumors, Barclays analyst Tim Long mentioned in an investor note that iPhone 15 Pro models will come with a higher price tag than the ongoing iPhone 14 Pro models this year. The iPhone 15 Pro will reportedly cost up to $100 (roughly Rs. 8,000) more than the iPhone 14 Pro, whereas the iPhone 15 Pro Max could see a price hike of $100 to $200 (roughly Rs. 16,000) more than the iPhone 14 Pro Max. The analyst states that the pricing would remain similar for the standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models.

In the US, the iPhone 14 Pro was launched at $999 (roughly Rs. 79,555), while the iPhone 14 Pro Max, currently the most expensive iPhone model on the market, was priced at $1,099 (roughly Rs. 87,530). Based on Tim Long’s estimate, the iPhone 15 Pro would start at $1,099, while iPhone 15 Pro Max is expected to have an initial price tag of $1,199 (roughly Rs. 98,000) or even $1,299 (roughly Rs. 1,06,864).

The vanilla iPhone 14 was announced with a starting price tag of $799 (roughly Rs. 63,700) and the iPhone 14 Plus starts at $899 (roughly Rs. 71,600).

Analyst Jeff Pu earlier in July claimed that the iPhone 15 Pro Max model will be priced higher than the existing iPhone 14 Pro Max. The increased cost can be attributed to several rumoured hardware upgrades including a fresh periscope lens, titanium frames, solid-state buttons with haptic feedback, USB Type-C charging ports, a brand-new A17 Bionic chip, and increased RAM.

A Bloomberg report earlier this week also reiterated that the iPhone 15 could have a higher price tag than the ongoing models. Apple is allegedly planning to hike the price of 2023 iPhone models to increase revenue. The company has reportedly set a target to produce around 85 million iPhone 15 units this year.

iPhone 15 to Get 48-Megapixel Camera From iPhone 14 Pro Models, Production Could Be Delayed: Report

Apple has been packing improved cameras on iPhone models each year. Last year, the Cupertino-based company fitted a 48-megapixel primary rear camera sensor on the premium iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models. Whereas the affordable iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus debuted with a similar dual 12-megapixel rear camera setup as seen on the iPhone 13 lineup. This year, Apple is reportedly adding a 48-megapixel primary rear camera sensor in the base iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models. The new sensor would allow users to capture high-resolution ProRAW photos.

As per a report by MacRumors citing analyst Jeff Pu, the regular iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will have the same 48-megapixel rear camera as the iPhone 14 Pro models. This camera will reportedly use a new three-stacked sensor that can capture more light with improved image quality. This would allow users to take photos in Apple ProRAW.

The analyst suggests that Apple may face production delays for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus this year, caused by yield issues for the stacked 48-megapixel camera sensor. As of now, the iPhone 15 series comprising iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max models is expected to go official in September.

The current iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus include a dual rear camera unit, comprising a 12-megapixel wide-angle camera with f/1.7 aperture and a 12-megapixel sensor paired with f/2.4 aperture ultra-wide-angle lens. In contrast, the triple rear camera unit of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max include a 48-megapixel main camera with second-generation sensor-shift optical image stabilisation and f/1.78 aperture, a 12-megapixel telephoto sensor with f/1.78 aperture, and another 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera with f/2.8 aperture.

The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are expected to be powered by an A16 Bionic chip, while the Pro models could run on A17 Bionic SoC. This year’s iPhone models are also said to feature a USB Type-C port for charging.

Criminals Use Apple’s Recovery Key to Lock Users Out of Their Stolen iPhones: Report

Apple’s recovery key feature allows iPhone users to reset their Apple ID password or regain access to their Apple ID account. Now, a Wall Street Journal report shows how cybercriminals and thieves can lock a user out of a stolen iPhone by using Apple’s advanced security setting. With the randomly generated 28-character sequence, a thief can reset the original iPhone owner’s Apple ID password in the Settings app. The criminals can then turn off Find My iPhone on the device to prevent the victim from tracking its location, and erase the data on the phone.

According to the Wall Street Journal report, 46-year-old Greg Frasca lost access to his iPhone 14 Pro, stolen from a bar in Chicago in October. Thieves spotted him entering his passcode at the bar and used it to change Frasca’s Apple ID password after the phone was stolen. They allegedly enabled the recovery key feature and used the 28-character code to block Frasca from tracking the stolen device through Apple’s Find My feature. This prevents the victim from remotely erasing the device via iCloud and accessing files like photos and videos.

Once criminals get access to the stolen iPhone, they can steal money via Apple Pay or other banking and financial apps. They can also gain access to sensitive data on the iPhone including photos, files and emails.

Apple introduced recovery keys in 2020 with the release of iOS 15 to improve the security of Apple accounts. A recovery key can be used to reset the password or regain access to an Apple ID. Once a user generates a recovery key, Apple automatically turns off account recovery. If the user loses the device and recovery key, they could be locked out of their account permanently. The recovery key can be accessed via Settings or System Preferences on a trusted device signed in with your Apple ID.

Apple reportedly responded to the issue, saying it is “always investigating additional protections against emerging threats like this one.” The report quotes an Apple spokesperson as saying “We sympathize with people who have had this experience and we take all attacks on our users very seriously, no matter how rare. We work tirelessly every day to protect our users’ accounts and data, and are always investigating additional protections against emerging threats like this one”.

The latest incident highlights the need of how important it is to keep your iPhone safe. In public spaces, iPhone users are recommended to use Face ID or Touch ID, Apple’s biometric unlocking mechanisms, to unlock their handsets. Also, users are advised to use complex passwords with numbers and letters, to protect their devices.

Fursat, an Apple Film Shot on iPhone 14 Pro, Released on YouTube: Details

Fursat, a short film shot on iPhone 14 Pro, is now available to watch on YouTube. Apple has shared the film, directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, on the video streaming platform on February 3. The film Fursat starring Ishaan Khatter and Wamiqa Gabbi has been describe by Apple as ‘a magical story about a man so obsessed with controlling the future that he risks losing what he holds most precious in the present.’ The short film lasts for around 30 minutes.

Apple took to YouTube to release the short film Fursat, which has been shot on iPhone 14 Pro, on its official channel. The movie has been directed by National Award-winning director Vishal Bhardwaj, narrating a story of a man named Nishant who gets his hands on an ancient relic called Doordarshak that tells him the future.

Fascinated by the predictions, Nishant gets intrigued to find out the mechanics behind the working of the Doordarshak. However, in the process, he even loses the love of his love on the day of their engagement.

Fursat, the short film, can be watched online here:

The short film has been shot using the iPhone 14 Pro, which was launched by the Cupertino-based giant in September last year. The smartphone carries 48-megapixel main camera with second-generation sensor-shift optical image stabilisation. Alongside, it has a 12-megapixel telephoto camera and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide sensor.

iPhone 14 Pro comes with surgical-grade stainless steel body. The smartphone supports a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR Always-On OLED display. The Pro models also offers up to 2,000 nits of peak brightness. The handset was under limelight last year for its faulty camera features. The users complained that the camera was taking four to five seconds to open after the app icon was tapped, especially when there is another app open in the background.
