The smartwatch is powered by a new Apple S9 SiP (system in package) with a second-generation Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip. India Smartwatch Shipments Grew 121 Percent YoY in Q1 2023, Fire-Boltt Now in Second Place Globally: Counterpoint

Global smartwatch shipments witnessed a decline of 1.5 percent year-on-year (YoY) in the first quarter of 2023, as per the latest report by market research firm Counterpoint. Still, India managed to register 121 percent year-over-year growth in shipments fuelled by high demand for low-cost wearables made by local brands such as Fire-Boltt, Noise and boAt, Counterpoint noted. Apple enjoyed the major share of smartwatch shipments in the first quarter of this year, while domestic brand Fire-Boltt surpassed Samsung and took the second position. Samsung came in third.

Counterpoint Research in its Global Smartwatch Model Tracker report said that the global smartwatch shipments in the first three months of 2023 declined 1.5 percent YoY. Meanwhile, backed by high demand for entry-level wearables, smartwatch shipments in India saw a significant increase of 121 percent in the same period. This to some extent managed to restrict the global decline. Seasonal decline in demand for smartwatches by Apple and Samsung, along with consumer sentiment dampened by global financial pressures is said to be the key reason behind the decline.

Apple maintained its lead in terms of shipments but its market share has declined to 26 percent from 32 percent reported in the same quarter last year. The release of the Apple Watch Series 8 was not able to solidify its position in the smartwatch space globally, the report said. This was the first time the Cupertino-based company saw its first-quarter sales below 10 million units.

Indian brand Fire-Boltt clocked an impressive performance and overtook Samsung for the first time and reached the second position in the global market with a 9 percent market share. Counterpoint says Fire-Boltt has witnessed 57 percent growth compared to the previous quarter and its shipments increased by approximately three times compared to the previous year. This reflects the rapid growth of the Indian market, just like other local brands such as Noise and boAt, Counterpoint noted. Samsung, however, secured the third position with 9 percent market share, compared to 10 percent in Q1 last year.

On a per-region basis, India surpassed North America, to reclaim its position as the top region with a 27 percent share of global smartwatch shipments. In the same period last year, India had a 12 percent market share.

“India’s smartwatch market grew 121% YoY in Q1 2023 driven by affordability, rising customer demand and availability of a wide variety of options in the budget segment. Around 40% of the total shipments were driven by the <INR 2,000 (<$25) price band, its highest proportion ever. The share of India-based players crossed 90% for the first time as they were quick in terms of upgrading their portfolios and adapting their products to customer needs at a reasonable price point”, said Counterpoint Research senior analyst Anshika Jain about India’s growth in the space.

North America saw 26 percent market share, while China got an 18 percent market share. Samsung registered a 15 per cent increase in North America but it failed to mark impressive growth in other major markets. Huawei, on the other hand, saw increased shipments in India and other regions but posted a 14 percent YoY decline in its shipments in the Chinese market.

Apple Launch Event Live Updates: iPhone 14 Lineup, Watch Series 8, AirPods Pro 2 Launch Expected Today

iPhone 14 launch event, dubbed ‘Far Out’, is set to begin at 10:30pm IST tonight. The Cupertino-based company is expected to unveil its next generation of iPhone models — comprising the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Meanwhile, the Apple Watch Series 8 is also expected to launch, and it is also said to include a new Apple Watch Pro model. Apple could also launch the AirPods Pro 2 at the event tonight. The company’s launch event will be livestreamed via YouTube and the Apple website, and you can also watch it in the player embedded at the top of this live blog.

While the iPhone 14 is not expected to come with noteworthy updates to its design, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models are tipped to swap the notch for a new “unified” hole punch and pill cutout. This would be the first major change to the iPhone’s display notch since it was introduced with the iPhone X in 2017.

The company is also expected to discontinue the “mini” model in favour of the iPhone 14 Max (or iPhone 14 Plus, according to recent leaks), which is said to be an iPhone 14 with the same display size as the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Apple’s previously launched the iPhone SE (2022) in March, equipped with the A15 Bionic chip, which is also expected to power the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max models.

Meanwhile, the Apple Watch Series 8 is likely to feature a similar design as last year’s Series 7 lineup, according to previous reports. However, this year’s models are tipped to feature a new low-power mode, while customers can expect to see a new health monitoring feature in the form of body and skin temperature monitoring.

Apple is also expected to launch a new Apple Watch Pro model, which is said to be a durable, rugged version of its smartwatch for active users, equipped with a titanium body. This model is tipped to feature a larger display than the others along with a new button.

Finally, Apple is also expected to launch a new model of its true wireless earphones, the AirPods Pro 2. Likely to succeed the AirPods Pro that made their debut in October 2019, the new earphones are said to feature a similar design, while offering improved active noise cancellation and audio quality. Previous reports also suggest that the earphones could offer support for MagSafe wireless charging and USB Type-C wired charging.

Like previous Apple events, we’re expecting the Far Out launch event to start with a keynote from Apple CEO Tim Cook. The company is most likely to announce the new iPhone series, followed by details of other new products. You can keep an eye out for the biggest updates on this page, as you watch the event with us via the player embedded above.

iPhone 14 Pro Max, iPhone 14 Max Possible Differences: What to Expect

Apple iPhone 14 Max was recently tipped to launch with iPhone 14 Plus banding. If this is true, the Cupertino-based tech giant will be launching its first handset with Plus branding since iPhone 8 Plus. Although, the iPhone 14 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Max are said to feature a similar form factor and screen size, the iPhone 14 Pro Max could debut with several upgrades over the Max (or Plus)model. Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max, iPhone 14 Max differences (expected)

First, Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max is expected to be powered by the latest Apple A16 Bionic SoC. On the other hand, the iPhone 14 Max is said to be powered by last year’s Apple A15 Bionic SoC. Additionally, the new SoC is said to be exclusive for the iPhone 14 Pro models.

The feature is said to be enabled by the low refresh rate display, which is said to be between 1Hz to 120Hz, on the upcoming iPhone 14 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Pro. Hints of the purported AoD support were reportedly spotted in iOS 16 operating system.

Lastly, the addition of a unified pill-shaped cutout, which is said to house the Face ID sensor, selfie camera, and privacy indicators, is reportedly exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Pro. The non-Pro iPhone 14 models, comprising the iPhone 14 Max and the vanilla iPhone 14, is said to retain the notch previously seen on the iPhone 13 series. Going by the rumours, the only notable similarity between the iPhone 14 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Max is the expected 6.7-inch display.

As per a recent report, the iPhone 14 Max was tipped to launch with the iPhone 14 Plus moniker. The Cupertino company reportedly told the case manufacturers for iPhone models to not use the iPhone 14 Max branding.
