Apple Announces New AI and ML Powered Eye Tracking and Music Haptics Accessibility Features

Apple announced several new accessibility-focused features for its iPhone and iPad devices on Wednesday. The company regularly introduces new accessibility features to make the devices easier to use for those who suffer from physical disabilities. This year, the tech giant is bringing a new Eye Tracking feature that will allow users to control their device with just eye movements. Additionally, Music Haptics will let users experience music via vibrations, and Vocal Shortcuts will let them perform tasks with custom sounds.

The features were announced via a post on the company’s newsroom. Apple’s senior director of Global Accessibility Policy and Initiatives, Sarah Herrlinger said, “Each year, we break new ground when it comes to accessibility. These new features will make an impact in the lives of a wide range of users, providing new ways to communicate, control their devices, and move through the world.”

First, the Eye Tracking feature offers users a built-in option for operating iPhone and iPad with just eye movements. Powered by artificial intelligence (AI), this feature uses the front camera which can be calibrated with the user’s eyes and the on-device machine learning (ML) features track the eyes to let people with physical disabilities easily navigate through the phone. The company says that it does not have the access to the user data.

Music Haptics is another new feature that offers a unique way for users to experience music who suffer from hearing impairments. The feature, on iPhone, leverages the Taptic Engine to play taps, textures and vibrations to match the audio of the music. Apple says the feature can play millions of songs in the Apple Music catalogue. It will also be available as an API for developers to integrate it in their music apps.

Next, Vocal Shortcuts for iPhone and iPad users is designed to help people suffering from speech-related disabilities. It allows users to set custom utterances that can be understood by Siri to launch shortcuts and complete tasks. Further, a new feature dubbed Vehicle Motion Cues adds animated dots on the edges of the screen to reduce sensory conflict between what a person sees and feels. Citing research, Apple said this conflict is one of the main reasons behind motion sickness, and the feature can reduce such symptoms.

Apart from these, CarPlay is also getting voice control, sound recognition, and colour filters to help users with various disabilities. Apple’s newest product line, Vision Pro is also getting a system-wide live caption feature for those with hearing difficulties.

iPad Pro (2024) Geekbench Scores Highlight Performance Boost Over Older iPad Pro, MacBook Pro Models

Apple introduced the iPad Pro (2024) model with its new in-house M4 chipset earlier this week. The tablet succeeds the iPad Pro (2022) model which is powered by the M2 chips. The newly launched iPad Pro from the Cupertino-based tech giant is available in two display sizes and four storage options. The iPad Pro with an M4 chip has now been spotted on a benchmarking website and the scores suggest that it is considerably faster than the older iPad Pro model and some existing MacBook models.

The iPad Pro (2024) with an M4 chipset and 16GB of RAM has been spotted on Geekbench. It is seen with a single-core score of 3,810 points and a multi-core score of 14,541 points. The 10-core M4 chip clocked at 4.4GHz is 25 percent faster than the preceding M3 processor, a MySmartPrice report notes.

The report adds that the preceding iPad Pro (2022) model, which came with an M2 chipset, scored 2,444 and 9,256 points on single-core and multi-core tests, respectively. This suggests that the iPad Pro (2024) model powered by an M4 chip shows a 55.89 percent and 57.10 percent increase in single-core and multi-core tests, respectively, suggesting a significant performance boost of the new tablet over the older model.

Another Geekbench test of the 16GB M4 iPad Pro (2024) model shows single and multi-core scores of 3,767 and 14,677 points, respectively. A Gizmochina report suggests that this is significantly improved over the scores of the 14-inch MacBook Pro model, which is powered by an 11-core M3 Pro chipset. The MacBook model can be found on Geekbench with scores of 3,023 and 12,641 points on single and multi-core tests, respectively.

Notably, the iPad Pro (2024) starts in India at Rs. 99,900 for the base 11-inch, Wi-Fi only 256GB option. The tablet is also available in 512GB, 1TB and 2TB variants and 13-inch display size option. It is offered in Silver and Space Black colourways.

Apple Logic Pro for iPad 2 Gets AI-Powered Session Players and Stem Splitters in a Big Update

Apple hosted its Let Loose event on Tuesday where it unveiled the new iPad Pro and iPad Air models alongside the Apple Pencil Pro. But amid all the hardware announcements, the Cupertino-based tech giant also introduced a major update for the Logic Pro app. The new Logic Pro for iPad 2 and Logic Pro for Mac 11 will now offer new artificial intelligence (AI)-powered features and new tools for mixing tracks and beats. Notably, the company also unveiled an update for the Final Cut Pro app as well.

The Logic Pro app, which is the company’s in-house digital audio workstation (DAW), has been an important platform for users to mix beats and create professional-quality tracks for years. With this new update, Apple has added more features for music enthusiasts to play around with. In total, there are three new features — Session Players, Stem Splitters, and ChromaGlow. The first of them is powered by AI.

Users have seen and used the Drummer feature for many years now. It is a virtual session player that can play drum beats in a wide range of styles and techniques to accompany the track. Apple is now expanding the feature by including two more virtual session players, a Bass Player and a Keyboard Player. All three have been grouped as Session Players. The tech giant revealed that just like the drummer, the other two players have also been developed using AI and sampling technology. There are eight Bass Players to choose from and each of them can be further customised using parameters such as slides, mutes, dead notes, and pickup hits.

The Keyboard Player is the other virtual session player which comes in four different styles. It comes with Chord Track and Studio Piano plugins that can control block chords, chord voicing, extended alternate harmony, and more.

Apart from Session Players, Stem Splitter is another unique feature. It will allow users to split and extract any audio recording into drums, bass, vocals, and other instruments. Once separated, individual effects can be applied or new parts can be added to them before combining them again.

Finally, the company has also added ChromaGlow. Based on its description, the feature appears to be a saturation-style controller that can add five different styles of reverb with varying amounts of voice saturation. Apple says this feature will add “ultrarealistic warmth, presence, and punch” to any track.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage to Launch on iPhone 15 Pro, iPad on June 6

Assassin’s Creed Mirage, the open-world action-adventure title from Ubisoft, will launch on iOS devices on June 6, the studio has announced. First announced for Apple devices in September last year, Assassin’s Creed Mirage will arrive on the App Store for iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPad Air and iPad Pro with M1 chip or later, making it the first console Assassin’s Creed title that can be played natively on mobile devices.

According to Ubisoft, Mirage will be free to download and play for 90 minutes from Apple’s App Store. The full game will cost users $49.99, or roughly Rs. 4,174. The full version of the game will support universal purchase, which means the game will be playable on both iPhone and iPad once full access is unlocked with a single in-app purchase.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage is currently up for pre-order on the App Store. Ubisoft also confirmed that the game will support cross-progression and cross-save through Ubisoft Connect, allowing players to transfer their progress across all available platforms.

The iPhone and iPad version of the game has been developed by Ubisoft Sofia and promises to deliver the same experience as the console version. Ubisoft said that game controls have also been adapted to the iPhone and iPad touch screens, but users can always play the game with a compatible controller for a better experience.

Mirage was first announced for iPhone and iPad alongside three other games at Apple’s Wonderlust event in September last year, where the tech giant unveiled its iPhone 15 lineup. The game was initially slated for an early 2024 release but is now coming out on Apple platforms on June 6. iPhone 15 Pro models and M1 and above iPad models have already seen the release of triple-A games like Resident Evil 4 Remake, Resident Evil Village and Death Stranding.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage was launched on October 5 across PS4, PS5, PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. The game is set in 9th century Baghdad, putting players in the shoes of Basim, a young street thief who joins the Hidden Ones and rises through the ranks to become a Master Assassin.

iPad Brought Under EU’s Digital Markets Act, Apple Must Comply With New Rules in 6 Months

Apple’s iPad has been added to a list of Big Tech products and services hit by strict new European Union rules aimed at stopping potential competition abuses before they take hold.

The move means Apple has six months to make sure its tablet ecosystem complies with a raft of preemptive measures under the EU’s flagship Digital Markets Act.

The company’s iOS mobile operating system, its App Store and Safari browser are already targeted by the law — but Apple has challenged its designation for certain services to the EU’s General Court in Luxembourg, with hearings set to take place later this year.

The EU’s decision to draw iPad under the scope of the DMA will ensure that fairness and competition are preserved, EU competition commissioner Margrethe Vestager said in a statement. She said that despite not meeting all the thresholds for being earmarked, an investigation showed that “iPadOS constitutes an important gateway on which many companies rely to reach their customers.”

The decision is a loss for Cupertino, California-based Apple, which will have to adapt its operating system to meet a swathe of new obligations and prohibitions, including allowing iPad users to download apps from beyond Apple’s confines as well as being able to uninstall apps preloaded onto devices.

An Apple spokesperson said that the company remains focused on delivering for European consumers, “while mitigating the new privacy and data security risks the DMA poses.”

The EU’s DMA strikes at the heart of the business models of six of the world’s most powerful technology firms deemed to be digital “gatekeepers.” Aside from Apple, Microsoft, Meta Platforms, Alphabet’s Google, Amazon.com and TikTok owner ByteDance have all been targeted for new obligations aimed at preventing them from abusing their dominance.

Under the law — which came into full effect on March 7 — it is illegal for designated firms to favor their own services over those of rivals. They are also barred from combining personal data across their different services, prohibited from using data they collect from third-party merchants to compete against them, and have to allow users to download apps from rivals platforms.

Apple’s 12.9-Inch iPad Air Tipped to Feature LCD Panel Just Like 5th Gen iPad Air Model

Apple is expected to launch a new iPad Air in two display sizes at its upcoming launch event next month, alongside new iPad Pro models that could feature OLED screens. An analyst has just leaked details of the larger iPad Air variant, which contradicts their previous claims that Apple would upgrade the display technology used on the purported tablet, using leftover panels from the company’s iPad Pro. Apple is now expected to equip the 10.9–inch and 12.9-inch iPad Air with the same display panels.

Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) CEO and Co-Founder Ross Young has contradicted his previous prediction that Apple would equip its rumoured 12.9-inch iPad Air with a Mini-LED screen, thanks to leftover panels from the 12.9-inch iPad Pro. According to earlier reports, Apple is likely to upgrade the iPad Pro with OLED screens, while the size of the displays is expected to increase slightly.

The analyst now states (via MacRumors) in a subscriber-only post on X (formerly Twitter) that both iPad Air variants will be equipped with IPS LCD screens, just like their predecessor, the iPad Air (5th Gen). Young further says that the decision was taken due to high costs involved with the panel upgrade.

Since Young’s previous prediction, Apple has announced that it will hold a launch event called ‘Let loose’ on May 7, where it is expected to launch new iPad Pro and iPad Air models. The Cupertino company is also tipped to introduce a new Apple Pencil with support for new ‘squueze’ gestures. The input device is also said to allow owners track the device via the company’s Find My network. Notably, Apple’s artwork for the event depicts an Apple Pencil surrounded by colours inside the company’s logo.

Instead of repurposing its leftover Mini-LED panels on the rumoured 12.9-inch iPad Air model, Apple might introduce a new iPad later this year, according to Young. There’s no mention of whether this will be an iPad Pro or an iPad Air model at the moment. The analyst says that Apple is likely to launch this model in Q4 2024.

Apple’s Calculator App to Get a Major Upgrade, Could Be Released on the iPad: Report

Apple could make some significant changes to its Calculator app across its product lineups, including releasing it on the iPad, as per a new report. With the company’s Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) coming up on June 10, it is expected that iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15 will be previewed during the keynote session. Multiple reports have highlighted that the Calculator app could get the spotlight at the event with new upgrades for macOS, integration with the Notes app, and its first appearance for the iPad.

Calculator app for iPad

According to a report by MacRumors, the Cupertino-based tech giant is gearing up to launch a dedicated Calculator app for the iPad, 14 years after the launch of the tablet. Citing an unnamed source familiar with the matter, the report mentioned that the iPadOS 18 update will feature an in-built Calculator app for all iPad models that will support the next OS update.

macOS could get new Calculator app features

However, it is not only the iPad that will get a Calculator-focused upgrade. As per a report by AppleInsider, the existing Calculator app on macOS could also witness a significant upgrade. The report highlighted that the tech giant is testing new features in an upgraded version of the app codenamed “GreyParrot”. The new app will see a design revamp and could look similar to its iOS counterpart with rounded buttons.

Changing the size of the app could also be possible with an adjustable window size feature. Expanding the window is said to turn the round buttons pill-shaped. Further, the app could get a history tape feature which will show the previous calculations made through the Calculator app. The report claims that the history tape feature will get its own dedicated button and a version of it will be available for the basic, scientific, and programmer versions of the app.

Math Notes feature in iOS 18

The iPhone is also rumoured to get a new Calculator-related feature. As per a separate report by AppleInsider, the iOS 18 update could integrate the Notes app with the Calculator via a feature called Math Notes. While details remain unknown, it is believed that the feature will export the calculation information to a separate note, allowing users to keep a record of it, or to add to the information.

Apple Tipped to Equip Purported 12.9-inch iPad Air Model With Mini LED Screen

Apple is reportedly working on a new iPad Air model that will arrive in 10.9-inch and 12.9-inch display sizes, according to recent reports. Details of the display technology on the larger 6th generation iPad Air model have now been leaked online, a month before it is expected to be unveiled by Apple. Ross Young, CEO and Co-Founder of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) has revealed that the purported 12.9-inch iPad Air will have a better display than its smaller sibling.

The rumoured 12.9-inch iPad Air model will be equipped with a Mini LED screen, Young claims in a post on X (formerly Twitter). This is a notable upgrade from the IPS LCD panel users on the 10.9-inch iPad Air (5th Gen) model (Review) that is currently sold by Apple. Mini LED screens will offer vastly improved picture quality compared to LCD panels, in terms of brightness and power consumption.

According to Young, Apple is planning to utilise Mini LED panels that were left over from the 12.9-inch iPad Pro models on the larger upcoming iPad Air models. Previous reports have suggested that the company’s next generation iPad Pro models will be equipped with OLED screens for the first time.

While this means that the larger iPad Air (6th Gen) variant is likely to arrive with a major display upgrade, it’s currently unclear whether the 10.9-inch model will sport an IPS LCD screen. This is because Apple’s smaller iPad Pro model is equipped with a slightly larger 11-inch screen.

The company could also increase the display size of the smaller iPad Air to repurpose leftover Mini LED panels, but we’ll have wait until the company unveils its next iPad models to learn more about their specifications.

This year’s iPad Air models are also tipped to debut with a landscape-oriented camera that will allow users to take video calls while the iPad is horizontal, unlike previous models. Apple is expected to launch new iPad Air and iPad Pro models in May, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

Apple Tipped to Launch 2024 iPad Pro Models With Thinner Bezels, Optional Matte Finish

Apple’s is said to be working on its next generation of iPad Pro models that will succeed the ones launched in 2022, and details of the upcoming tablets’ displays have surfaced online. The iPhone maker’s next 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models will be equipped with bezels that are considerably thinner than their predecessors, according to details shared by tipster Instant Digital (translated from Chinese). The company is also tipped to offer its iPad Pro models with an optional matte finish.

According to details shared by the tipster via Weibo, the successors to the 2022 11-inch- and 12.9-inch iPad Pro will sport 7.12mm and 7.08mm bezels, respectively. MacRumors points out that these bezels are 10 percent and 15 percent smaller than the ones on the company’s 2022 models. These measurements are exclusive of the flat aluminium edges of the tablets, according to the leaker.

Readers might recall that Apple reduced the size of the bezels on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max that were introduced in September 2023, and a recent report suggests this trend could continue with their successors.

In another post, Instant Digital claims that Apple is working on launching its 2024 iPad Pro models in “glossy and matte screen versions”. The latter will have a “haze value” of 29 percent (+/- 4 percent), according to the tipster. It is currently unclear whether the purported matte version will be available at a higher price than one with the glossy finish.

Recent reports suggest that Apple is planning to launch new iPad Pro models equipped with OLED screens in the coming weeks. This means that we can expect to see new iPad Pro models — these are tipped to be powered by Apple’s latest M3 chips — by the last week of March or in early April. These models could be accompanied by a 2024 iPad Air model that runs on an M2 chip.

Apple Foldable iPhone Launch Said to Be Delayed to First Quarter of 2027

Apple is believed to be working on its lineup of foldable devices. While the Cupertino, California-based company has not divulged its plans for foldables, recent reports and filed patents suggest that the company is working on a foldable iPhone, iPad, and a large-display device, said to be a MacBook. Earlier this month, a report claimed that a foldable iPhone could debut in 2026. Now, a new report suggests that Apple has pushed back the launch of its first foldable phone to early 2027.

Korean outlet AlphaBiz, which previously claimed that the foldable iPhone would likely be released in late 2026, said in a new report that the device would be launched in the first quarter of 2027. Citing an official familiar with Apple’s internal plans, the report said that Apple had delayed its plans for a foldable phone owing to reasons related to supply and demand.

“I understand that Apple plans to start selling foldable iPhone at a slightly later time than expected after making full preparations for all matters, including the supply and demand of foldable displays,” the official was quoted as saying. Previously reported to be slated for the fourth quarter of 2026, the foldable Apple phone is now said to be delayed to the first quarter of 2027.

The report, however, mentioned that the selection of suppliers for the components, such as foldable displays, for the device was expected to proceed as originally planned.

Earlier this month, the same publication had claimed, citing a senior Apple official, that the foldable iPhone would be launched in 2026. “As it is a later release than its competitors, we know that cutting-edge technologies will be concentrated,” the official was quoted as saying at the time.

The official had claimed that a foldable iPhone would be thinner and lighter than the competition, with a particular focus on preventing crease marks on the folding screen. Apple has reportedly applied to patent a technology that minimizes wrinkles and creases along the folding axis of the display.

Apple has not yet revealed its plans for a foldable device even as the company lags behind rivals Samsung and Google in the product category. Samsung has released five generations of both clamshell and book-style foldable phones, while Google launched the Pixel Fold last year and is reported to be working on a second-generation Pixel foldable.

Shifting and contradicting reports around Apple’s foldable products have further amplified the uncertainty around its plans for the segment. The company has been widely reported to be working on a foldable iPad. Earlier this month, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed that Apple’s first foldable would be a 20.3-Inch MacBook, that will likely enter mass production in 2027.

Last month, a tipster had claimed on Chinese social media site Weibo that Apple had halted development on a foldable iPhone over issues with the folding display.
