iPhone 16 Lineup Could All Feature an A18 Chip, iOS 18 Code Reportedly Suggests

Apple packed ‌an older A16 chip on the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models this year, while the top-of-the-range ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ and iPhone 15 Pro Max debuted with an all-new A17 Pro chip. Now, early leaks indicate that the Cupertino-based tech giant will use an A18 processor in all iPhone 16 models. Early development versions of the iOS 18 operating system reportedly include references to four new iPhone models with an A18 chip.

As per a report by Macrumors, early development versions of the iOS 18 operating system contain references to four new iPhone models. These models, believed to be the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max, are reportedly internally referenced as D47, D48, D93, and D94, respectively.

The codes from iOS 18 reportedly indicate that Apple will pack a new SoC – t8140 – Tahiti in the entire ‌iPhone 16‌ range. This codename is said to be associated with the A18 chip. This corroborates earlier rumours.

Apple’s recent iPhone 15 series and iPhone 14 series have used different chipsets for the non-Pro and Pro models. The company used older generation SoCs in its lower-priced iPhone units in 2023 and 2022. The ‌iPhone 15‌ runs on an older A16 Bionic chip from the iPhone 14 Pro, while the ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ models are powered by a new A17 Pro chip with an additional GPU core and increased clock speed.

If all four iPhone 16 models are to use an A18 chip in 2024, it won’t be the same one, as per the report. Apple is said to differentiate the chips used on iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models by using A18 and A18 Pro branding. Besides the A18 chip, the operating system reportedly has reference to Broadcom Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules.

The rumoured iPhone 16 series is expected to come with a dedicated button for taking videos. This mysterious button is expected to be called as “Capture Button”. The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models would feature the new Action Button, which is currently exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro models. The Pro variants are said to have larger displays than the iPhone 15 Pro models.

iPhone SE 4 to Be Equipped With Same Battery as iPhone 14: Report

iPhone SE 4 is expected to debut in the future as the successor to the iPhone SE (2022), Apple’s most affordable iPhone. While previous “SE” models have featured the same chassis as the iPhone 8, the fourth model in the series is expected to be the first to sport a modern design. Now, a report suggests that the iPhone SE 4 will be equipped with a larger battery than its predecessors, which means it could offer battery life similar to Apple’s standard models.

A MacRumors report citing unnamed sources states that Apple is testing a battery for the fourth generation iPhone SE — internally referred to as D59 — with a battery that is identical to the one used on the iPhone 14. Apple launched five smartphone models last year — the iPhone SE (2022), the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Apple’s unfinished prototypes of the iPhone SE 4 have been equipped with Apple’s A2863 battery, as per the report — the iPhone 14 is equipped with the same battery. Previous teardowns of the iPhone 14 have revealed that the handset is equipped with a 3,279mAh battery, which is considerably larger than the 2,108mAh battery on the iPhone SE (2022). Apple does not usually reveal the battery capacities of its handsets.

The battery isn’t the only upgrade expected to arrive on the iPhone SE 4 — the handset will also reportedly feature the same Action button that arrived on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max this year. A recent report suggests that Apple will equip all iPhone 16 models next year with the programmable button next year, in place of the mute switch.

Another hardware change expected to come to the iPhone SE 4 is the addition of a USB Type-C port. Apple’s next smartphone is expected to feature the modern USB connector in compliance with the EU’s common charger regulations — the iPhone 15 series became the first smartphones from the company to feature a USB Type-C port.

iPhone 14 Users Get Free One-Year Extension for Emergency SOS via Satellite Feature

Apple introduced the Emergency SOS via satellite for all iPhone 14 users in November 2022. When there are no other options for contacting emergency services, emergency SOS via satellite feature can help users get in touch with them. Compatible iPhone models make an effort to link customers to necessary assistance via satellite-based communication in the event they are unable to reach emergency services because they are outside the coverage area of cellular and Wi-Fi networks. The feature has been reported to be life-saving in several situations so far. Initially provided for free for two years, the emergency SOS feature will now be available for longer for iPhone 14 users at no additional cost.

The iPhone maker confirmed in a press release that it is extending the two-year free trial of the Emergency SOS via satellite feature for iPhone 14 users by another year. “We are so happy iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 users can take advantage of this groundbreaking service for two more years for free,” Kaiann Drance, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide iPhone Product Marketing, said in the release.

According to Apple, the free trial will be extended for iPhone 14 users who have activated their device in a country that supports Emergency SOS via satellite prior to 12am PT (1:30am IST) on November 15, 2023. Currently, Emergency SOS via satellite is available in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, the UK and the US. There’s no word on when the feature would make its way to India.

Apple launched the iPhone 14 lineup with four models – iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max, in September 2022. It was followed by the release of the Emergency SOS via satellite feature in November of that year, initially only in the US and Canada, and later extended to more countries.

Buidling upon the satellite connectivity capability, eligible iPhone 14 users travelling off the grid, that is a location without cellular or wireless connectivity, can also use the Find My app and communicate their location with friends and family via satellite.

Apple also introduced the Roadside Assistance via satellite feature in the US, which connects car-owners to AAA roadside assistance in case of car trouble in a region with no cellular and Wi-Fi coverage. According to Apple, the feature is included for free for two years, starting at the time of activation of a new iPhone 15 or 14 series model, and would require iOS 17 on the device to work.

The Emergency SOS via satellite service has also been extended to iPhone 15 users in 16 countries and regions, according to Apple. The company recently expanded the feature to Spain and Switzerland. Apple launched its latest iPhones at its ‘Wonderlust’ event in September.

iPhone SE 4 to Feature Single Rear Camera, Sport Upgraded Design Based on iPhone 14 Chassis: Report

iPhone SE 4 specifications have leaked again, giving tech enthusiasts an idea of what to expect from Apple’s purported successor to the iPhone SE (2022). Apple’s third-generation midrange iPhone SE model was launched in 2022 with a modified iPhone 8 chassis, making it the only iPhone currently sold by Apple that is equipped with a Touch ID button. Its successor is tipped to sport a much more modern design, with a larger screen, a display notch, and support for Face ID.

MacRumors reports that Apple is working on an upcoming model — codenamed Ghost and internally identified as D59 — that will be launched as the iPhone SE 4. Unlike it’s predecessor, the next model in the iPhone SE series of smartphones will closely resemble Apple’s recent smartphone models, according to the publication.

The iPhone SE 4 will be housed in a slightly modified iPhone 14 chassis, according to specifications obtained by the publication from unnamed sources. Apple’s previous generation handset measures 146.7×71.5×7.8mm and weighs 172g. While the measurements of the chassis might be similar to the iPhone 14, it will reportedly be 6g lighter as the company only plans to equip the handset with a single rear camera.

Apple’s iPhone SE models are equipped with one rear camera, while the standard and Pro models feature dual and triple rear camera setups, respectively. According to the report, the iPhone SE 4 will be equipped with a 48-megapixel rear camera codenamed Portland. The rear panel could closely resemble the one on the iPhone 14, aside for the single rear camera.

Previous reports have suggested that the iPhone SE 4 will come with a feature that was introduced on the iPhone 15 Pro models this year — a dedicated Action button that replaces the company’s mute switch. The new button can also be programmed to perform other functions. Just like the iPhone 15 series of smartphones, the iPhone SE 4 is also expected to be equipped with a USB Type-C port, in order to comply with common charger regulations in the EU, India, and California.

India Smartphone Shipments Fall 3 Percent YoY in Q3, Samsung Retains Leadership: Canalys

Smartphone shipments in India declined 3 percent year-on-year (YoY) for the July-September period (Q3) in 2023, shows a new report by market research firm Canalys. Despite the fall, Samsung continued to lead the smartphone market with 7.9 million shipments and 18 percent market share. The South Korean company launched its Galaxy S23 series early this year and the flagship phones have apparently helped grow its market share. Xiaomi is in a close second spot, followed by other Chinese smartphone brands including Vivo, Realme, and Oppo in the top five places. Upcoming festival sales and improved consumer confidence are expected to lead to positive growth in the coming months.

Analyst firm Canalys said in its latest report that 43 million smartphones were shipped in India in the third quarter of 2023. The figure marks a 3 percent drop in year-on-year shipments.

Following past trends, Samsung enjoyed a major share of India’s smartphone shipments and maintained its top position in Q3 with a market share of 18 percent and a shipment of 7.9 million units. Xiaomi advanced to the second position by shipping 7.6 million units. The Chinese brand has grabbed 21 percent of the market share primarily fueled by the release of its affordable 5G models. Vivo came third with 7.2 million shipments and a 16 percent market share. Other BBK subsidiaries, Realme and Oppo came in fourth and fifth, respectively. Realme shipped 5.8 million units and got a 14 percent market share, while Oppo shipped 4.4 million units and received a 12 percent market share.

Canalys notes that brands promoted their festive product lineup with a focus on the budget-friendly 5G smartphone segment. Xiaomi expanded its 5G portfolio with the launch of budget-friendly models like the Redmi 12 5G and Poco M6 Pro 5G, contributing to the growth of 5G offerings in their lineup. Realme also gained traction in the market with its Realme 11x 5G and Realme 11 5G models. Brands like Motorola, Infinix and Tecno also drove limited volume through their new affordable 5G devices.

The premium smartphone segment also witnessed robust growth in the just-ended quarter, as per the report. Sales of Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series and Apple’s iPhone 14, and iPhone 13 lineup surged during the festive sales driven by online sale offers.

Canalys observes that increased consumer confidence and the launch of new handsets will likely help the market move toward gradual recovery. “Despite the market gaining consumer confidence in the second half, the road to recovery will be challenged by global economic concerns,” said Canalys senior analyst Sanyam Chaurasia. “The growth in 2024 hinges on uncertain macroeconomic factors, particularly affecting the vulnerable entry-level segment. However, the Indian economy remains relatively resilient to sudden shocks from these variables and brands are adapting to market dynamics. To maintain market share, vendors should prioritise reducing channel pressures and building a lean product portfolio. They should have ‘hero models’ in each price segment while maintaining balanced inventories across channels” he added.
