Eight iPhone Models Emerged as Best-Selling Smartphones in 2022, iPhone 13 Topped the List: Counterpoint

2022 has been a remarkable year for Apple, according to a new report by a market research firm. The Cupertino-based tech giant continued to enjoy the lead in worldwide smartphone shipments with eight of its models featuring in the list of top 10 best-selling smartphones. Launched in 2021, the iPhone 13 emerged as the best-selling model, followed by the iPhone 13 Pro Max, and iPhone 14 Pro Max at second and third positions respectively. The list also includes iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 12, iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone SE (2022). Samsung was represented in the top-10 list two entry-level Galaxy A series smartphones.

Market research firm Counterpoint Research in its latest Global Monthly Handset Model Sales Tracker report has listed the iPhone 13 as the best-selling phone of 2022. Launched in 2021, the smartphone powered by Apple’s A15 Bionic chip contributed to 28 percent of iPhone sales. The surge in demand for the old iPhone 13 series model is attributed to the price cuts post the launch of the iPhone 14 series in September last year. It was the best-selling smartphone in China, France, Germany, the US, and the UK.

While iPhone 13 Pro Max took the second spot, the new iPhone 14 Pro Max came in third place. Counterpoint noted that the Pro Max variant of an iPhone series drove more volume than its Pro and base models in 2022. Samsung’s budget offering Galaxy A13 occupied the fourth spot with the iPhone 13 Pro coming in a close fifth position.

The iPhone 12 took the sixth spot, followed by the new iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro at seventh and eighth positions respectively. Apple’s budget offering, the iPhone SE (2022), grabbed the ninth position, while Samsung’s Galaxy A03 rounds off the top-ten list. Popularity across the Caribbean and Latin America (CALA) and India drove the sale of the entry-level device. However, with the latest report, Apple has become the first brand to capture eight spots in the list of top 10 best-selling smartphones.

Counterpoint expects that the share of the top 10 smartphones will increase in 2023 as brands focus on clearing inventory and optimising their launches. Brands are expected to make their portfolios leaner this year to minimise cannibalisation, according to the research firm.

iPhone 14 Pro Max Reportedly More Expensive to Make Than iPhone 13 Pro Max: All Details

A newly published report examines how much it costs Apple to manufacture the iPhone 14 Pro Max. The “blended bill of materials” cost for the flagship with 128GB of storage is $464 (roughly Rs. 38,400), which is a small increase over the iPhone 13 Pro Max. The new Apple-designed chipset, AOD display, and 48-megapixel main rear camera are the primary parameters driving the cost change. These figures also only cover components and do not include assembly, packaging, or distribution costs. Apple released the iPhone 14 series in September 2022 and the iPhone 13 series in September 2021.

Counterpoint Research’s report states that the iPhone 14 Pro Max with 128GB storage has a blended bill of materials (BoM) cost of around $464 (roughly Rs. 38,400), which is a 3.7 percent increase over that of the iPhone 13 Pro Max, which amounts to about $447.44 (roughly Rs. 37,000).

A bill of materials, or BoM, is a detailed list of all the parts that are needed to produce a final product. It is typically built in layers or hierarchy, with top-level assemblies, sub-assemblies, and finally individual components.

The mmWave model for the US market is expected to cost $474 (roughly Rs. 39,000), while the sub-6GHz model for other markets is expected to cost $454 (roughly Rs. 37,600). For comparison, the 128GB iPhone 14 Pro Max has a marked US price of $1,099 (roughly Rs. 90,900).

According to the detailed insights cost breakdown, Apple spends $11 (roughly Rs. 900) more on the A16 Bionic chipset than its forerunner, bringing the constituent cost to 20 percent of the total BoM price.

The new iPhone 14 Pro Max display with AOD functionality accounts for a 1 percent increase in the BoM over the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Aside from that, the 48-megapixel main camera and supporting modules have increased the price of the new phone by an approximated $6.30 (roughly Rs. 500).

Prices for Cellular connectivity parts on the iPhone 14 Pro Max are roughly 13 percent lower than on the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Some component prices had decreased in 2022 compared to 2021, with cellular components seeing one of the most prominent price drops.

Apple’s self-designed parts inside the iPhone 14 Pro Max, such as the touch control, connectivity, audio, and power management circuits, account for a larger portion of the phone’s overall cost. According to the report, self-designed parts now make up about 22 percent of the phone’s BoM.

iPhone 14 Performs Better Than iPhone 13 Pro Models Despite Using Same Chip: Report

iPhone design director Richard Dinh claims that the base iPhone 14 is a better-functioning phone than the higher-end iPhone 13 models and that an upgrade to the iPhone 14 series will be better for users. Dinh says that while the iPhone 14 appears to be extremely similar to the iPhone 13, it has gone through a major design overhaul, with advantages that may not be immediately apparent when compared to an older model. Weight reductions, cheaper and easier repairability, and longer battery life are among the few changes made to the newer model.

In an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald, Dinh says that the better performance of the base iPhone 14 model is owed to the fact that the newer model is less susceptible to thermal throttling. Despite sharing the same chip, the standard iPhone 14 models have better consistent performance than the iPhone 13 Pro models, thanks to a certain internal rearrangement. The design of the iPhone 14 was radically changed to incorporate a central aluminium structure that serves as a backbone. This central structural plane aids in the constant dissipation of heat across the entire surface, he explained.

Dinh adds that they were able to provide a larger main camera than the iPhone 13 Pro models, with a larger sensor, improved low-light performance, and a completely new ambient light sensor in the back.

“This design also introduces our first four-sided stacked main logic board [which] really condenses all the iPhone 14 components in a smaller space and allows us to access the board from either side, for improved repairability,” the iPhone design director notes.

Apple’s iPhone 13, like previous models dating back to the iPhone 8, needed the display to be removed in order to gain access to any internal structural parts. Instead, the back glass of the iPhone 14 can be removed, allowing for easier repair work with less damage risk. Because of the difficult access on older phones, the price of repairing a screen fault has nearly halved, the report states.

Recently, it was also reported that the iPhone 14 Pro outperforms the recently released Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra in both single-core and multi-core performance.

According to leaked Geekbench scores for the recently launched Samsung smartphone, the iPhone 14 Pro is up to 21 percent faster in single-core performance than the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. In the single-core test, the iPhone 14 Pro scored 1,874, while the Galaxy S23 Ultra scored 1,480.

In the multi-score test, the iPhone 14 Pro received a score of 5,384, which is higher than the Galaxy S23 Ultra, which received a score of 4,584. According to the benchmarks, Apple has a smaller (nearly 15 percent) lead over Samsung in multi-core performance in comparison to single-core tests.

iPhone 14 Pro Max Charging Speed Capped at 27W, Required Time With Various Chargers Revealed: Report

Apple 14 Pro Max was recently subjected to a battery test by a Chinese publication and they have published the results of the test. The test, which included multiple Apple chargers, hints at the time taken by a particular charging brick to fully charge the top-of-the-line handset, as well as the maximum speed of charging achieved by each wall block. It is to be noted that unlike Android smartphone makers, Apple doesn’t reveal the battery capacity of its handsets or the time its chargers take to fully charge the company’s handsets.

In a recent test conducted by Chinese publication Chongdiantou, the iPhone 14 Pro Max was charged with different chargers available in the market. These included Apple’s older 5W charger, the 18W charger which was bundled with iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max, the 30W charger available with 2020 smartphones, a 96W charger that comes with the 2019 MacBook Pro, and the 140W charger that ships with the 2021 MacBook Pro.

Before going straight into the results of the tests, let’s have a look at the battery capacity of each smartphone in the iPhone 14 lineup. A report recently suggested that the iPhone 14 packs a 3,279mAh battery, the iPhone 14 Plus packs a 4,325mAh battery, the iPhone 14 Pro gets a 3,200mAh battery, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max comes with a 4,323mAh battery. The tests were conducted with the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Apart from 18W and 20W chargers, which are restricted to their peak output, all the other bricks offer a maximum charging speed of 27W, the test revealed. This implies that in order to get the maximum charging speeds, iPhone 14 buyers should charge their phones with Apple’s 30W USB Type-C power adapter.

The report mentioned above also claims that last year’s top-of-the-line offering, the iPhone 13 Pro Max, packs a 4,352mAh battery. This is around the same battery capacity as this year’s offering. When it comes to the charging time, the publication based its calculations on the performance of last year’s top-end model with the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

The 30W charger fully charges the iPhone 13 Pro Max in 2 hours and 9 minutes, according to the report. It also mentions that the Apple 96W PD charger takes an hour and 49 minutes to fully charge the top model indicating a 20-minute difference between them. The publication indicates that the iPhone 14 Pro Max should take a similar amount of time to be fully charged by these power bricks.

iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro Max Top Most Sold Smartphones List for Q1 2022: IDC

iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro Max reportedly took the top two spots on the most sold smartphones list for the first quarter of 2022. This information comes from IDC analyst Francisco Jeronimo who shared a top-five list of the best-selling smartphones in Q1 2022. Another Apple handset found its way into this list at the fourth position. The remaining two spots at third and fifth were secured by handsets from Samsung. However, the information shared by Jeronimo does not include the actual number of units sold for these smartphones.

Jeronimo posted this information on Twitter which says that the smartphone market was dominated by Apple in Q1 2022 with the iPhone 13 sitting in the top spot. It is followed by the iPhone 13 Pro Max with a 6.7-inch display in second. Meanwhile, the iPhone 13 Pro with a 6.1-inch screen was able to secure the fourth place which might suggest that Apple customers were willing to pay extra for a slightly larger display.

The tweet also mentions that the iPhone 13 sales were around $42 billion (roughly Rs. 3,26,224 crore) for this quarter. This figure reportedly accounted for up to 84 percent of the iPhone sales in this period. Apple has kept its momentum going after recording its most profitable holiday season (October to December) last year, despite facing supply shortages. During this period, the Cupertino company reported iPhone sales of $71.63 billion (roughly Rs. 5,56,393 crore).

On the other hand, Samsung also made its way onto this list with the Galaxy A12 and Galaxy A32 low-end smartphones that came 3rd and 5th, respectively. The combined sales of these smartphones for Q1 2022 supposedly generated $3.6 billion (roughly Rs. 27,963 crore) for the South Korean tech giant.
