Apple to Skip M3-Powered Mac Mini, Will Launch M4 Model as Soon as Late 2024: Report

Apple is said to be planning an overhaul of its entire Mac line of computers with the in-house M4 chipset capable of delivering artificial intelligence (AI)-based features. The Cupertino, California-based company launched its M3-powered MacBook Pro models and a 24-inch M3 iMac last year, before introducing new MacBook Air models with M3 processor in March. Apple is said to be working on refreshing the Mac mini, as well, but a new report says that the company may skip the M3 generation and launch an updated M4-powered Mac mini in late 2024.

The information comes from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who had previously reported that Apple could bring an M3-powered Mac mini to market in 2024. In his latest Power On newsletter, however, Gurman claimed that Apple could altogether skip the M3 Mac mini and instead focus on refreshing the model with its next-generation M4 chipset.

In the Q&A section of his newsletter (via MacRumors), Gurman said that he was not expecting an M3 Mac mini to hit the shelves this year. This development comes a week after Gurman had claimed that M4 and M4 Pro-powered Mac mini models would arrive between the end of 2024 and early 2025. In his latest newsletter, he doubles down on the claim, explaining that the possible launch of an M4 Mac mini as soon as the end of 2024 would leave no “room for M3 models to come out before then, so it’s probably safe to say that those Mac desktops will skip the M3 generation.”

Last year in July, Gurman had reported that an M3-powered Mac mini would likely come out in 2024. Since then, Apple has refreshed its Mac lineup with the M3 chip but continues to sell M2 and M2 Pro-powered Mac mini models, launched in January 2023.

Apple debuted its 3nm M3 chipset with new 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro variants, alongside a sole 24-inch M3 iMac, at its Scary Fast event in October last year. The new MacBook Pro lineup runs on M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max family of chipsets. Earlier this year in March, the company refreshed its MacBook Air line with the M3 processor, unveiling 13 and 15-inch models.

Apple last updated the Mac mini in January 2023 with M2 and M2 Pro chipsets. Currently, the M2 Mac mini is available in three configurations — M2-powered Mac minis with 8-Core CPU, 10-Core GPU, 8GB of RAM and 256GB SSD storage, and 8-Core CPU, 10-Core GPU, 8GB RAM, and 512GB SSD storage; and an M2 Pro-powered Mac mini with 10-Core CPU, 16-Core GPU, 16GB of RAM and 512GB SSD storage.

Earlier this month, Bloomberg reported that Apple intended to overhaul its entire Mac lineup with AI-focussed M4 processor. The company is reportedly nearing production of the next-generation M4 chip, which will likely come in three main variants.

Apple Plans to Overhaul Entire Mac Line With AI-Focused M4 Chips

Apple, aiming to boost sluggish computer sales, is preparing to overhaul its entire Mac line with a new family of in-house processors designed to highlight artificial intelligence.

The company, which released its first Macs with M3 chips five months ago, is already nearing production of the next generation — the M4 processor — according to people with knowledge of the matter. The new chip will come in at least three main varieties, and Apple is looking to update every Mac model with it, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans haven’t been announced.

The new Macs are underway at a critical time. After peaking in 2022, Mac sales fell 27 percent in the last fiscal year, which ended in September. In the holiday period, revenue from the computer line was flat. Apple attempted to breathe new life into the Mac business with an M3-focused launch event last October, but those chips didn’t bring major performance improvements over the M2 from the prior year.

Apple also is playing catch-up in AI, where it’s seen as a laggard to Microsoft, Alphabet’s Google and other tech peers. The new chips are part of a broader push to weave AI capabilities into all its products.

Apple is aiming to release the updated computers beginning late this year and extending into early next year. There will be new iMacs, a low-end 14-inch MacBook Pro, high-end 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros, and Mac minis — all with M4 chips. But the company’s plans could change. An Apple spokesperson declined to comment.

Apple shares climbed 4.3 percent to $175.04 on Thursday in New York, the biggest single-day gain in 11 months. They had been down 13 percent this year through Wednesday’s close.

The move will mark a quick refresh schedule for the iMac and MacBook Pro, as both lines were just updated in October. The Mac mini was last upgraded in January 2023.

Apple is then planning to follow up with more M4 Macs throughout 2025. That includes updates to the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air by the spring, the Mac Studio around the middle of the year, and the Mac Pro later in 2025. The MacBook Air received the M3 chip last month, while the Mac Studio and Mac Pro were updated with M2 processors last year.

The M4 chip line includes an entry-level version dubbed Donan, more powerful models named Brava and a top-end processor codenamed Hidra. The company is planning to highlight the AI processing capabilities of the components and how they’ll integrate with the next version of macOS, which will be announced in June at Apple’s annual developer conference.

The Donan chip is coming to the entry-level MacBook Pro, the new MacBook Airs and a low-end version of the Mac mini, while the Brava chips will run the high-end MacBook Pros and a pricier version of the Mac mini. For the Mac Studio, Apple is testing versions with both a still-unreleased M3-era chip and a variation of the M4 Brava processor.

The highest-end Apple desktop, the Mac Pro, is set to get the new Hidra chip. The Mac Pro remains the lower-selling model in the company’s computer lineup, but it has a vocal fan base. After some customers complained about the specifications of Apple’s in-house chips, the company is looking to beef up that machine next year.

As part of the upgrades, Apple is considering allowing its highest-end Mac desktops to support as much as a half-terabyte of memory. The current Mac Studio and Mac Pro top out at 192 gigabytes — far less capacity than on Apple’s previous Mac Pro, which used an Intel Corp. processor. The earlier machine worked with off-the-shelf memory that could be added later and handle as much as 1.5 terabytes. With Apple’s in-house chips, the memory is more deeply integrated into the main processor, making it harder to add more.

The big focus for Apple this year is to add new artificial intelligence features across its products. The company is planning to preview a slew of new features at its June developer conference. A large swath of those features are designed to run on the devices themselves — rather than in remote servers — and speedier chips will help drive those enhancements. Apple is also planning to make AI-focused upgrades to this year’s iPhone processor.

The company’s switch to in-house chips was part of a long-running initiative known as Apple Silicon. The tech giant started using its own semiconductors in the original iPad and iPhone 4 in 2010, before bringing the technology to the Mac in 2020. The goal has been to better unify its hardware and software with underlying components and move away from processors made by Intel.

So far, the effort has been a success, helping boost performance and ease the redesign of devices such as the latest MacBook Air, iMac and MacBook Pro. Apple’s Mac chips are based on the same underlying Arm Holdings Plc architecture as the processors in the iPhone and iPad, enabling thinner products with better battery life and less need for cooling fans.

Apple to Reportedly Announce New Devices Soon; New iPad Pro, iPad Air, MacBook Air Models Tipped

Apple is reportedly gearing up to announce multiple devices soon but without much fanfare. The Cupertino-based tech giant is said to refresh its tablet lineup with its new silicon via a press release, after skipping it in 2023. Alongside, new MacBook Air models, a new colour option for iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, and several other products could also be launched by the company, a report has claimed. While the iPad Pro, iPad Air, and MacBook Air models could be introduced as soon as this week, the rest of the products are believed to be announced by April 2024.

Citing unnamed sources “familiar with the matter”, a MacRumors report claimed that Apple could launch new devices this week itself. It does not reveal however which products are expected to be announced or when exactly might this announcement occur. However, it is not the only report to claim that Apple is planning to introduce multiple products.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, in his Power On newsletter, said, “Apple has a lot of new hardware in store for release in the next several weeks. That includes revamped iPad Pro models and an updated iPad Air that adds a 12.9-inch screen option, as well as fresh Apple Pencils and Magic Keyboards for the high-end iPads. On the Mac front, there are 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air variants coming with the speedier M3 chip. All of these new products are in production overseas, and Apple’s marketing teams are preparing to announce them relatively soon.”

As per reports, the list could include significant upgrades to two new iPad Pro models. The Apple tablets are expected to be equipped with the M3 chipset, OLED panels, a redesigned rear camera module, a landscape-oriented front camera, a slimmer body, and more. This would be the first time in more than five years that the Pro models are getting such a major update.

Two new iPad Air models are also expected to be introduced and feature the M2 chipsets. The biggest highlight from this lineup is reported to be the company’s first-ever 12.9-inch iPad Air model. MacBook Air is also said to get a refresh in the coming weeks. New 13-inch and 15-inch models powered by the M3 SoC and support for WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 could be unveiled.

Apart from these, a new Magic Keyboard with a larger trackpad, a new Apple Pencil, and new shades for iPhone cases and Apple Watch bands are also expected. It is also the time when the tech giant traditionally unveils a new colour option for the latest iPhone series. The report has mentioned that the iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 Plus might be the first to get a new finish in the coming weeks.

Despite being significant releases for the company, the latest reports claim that no event will be held for these devices, and they will be launched via multiple press releases over the next few weeks.

iPhone 16 Pro Models With Larger Screens, Apple Watch X With New Health Features Coming in 2024: Mark Gurman

iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will get slightly larger displays next year, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman states in the latest edition of his Power On newsletter. The company recently unveiled its iPhone 15 series of smartphones with the standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus receiving the Dynamic Island and a 48-megapixel camera that made their debut on the company’s 2022 Pro models. Gurman says that the iPhone maker will also introduce a new iPad Pro with an OLED display, M3-powered Mac models, as well as an Apple Watch ‘Series X’ upgrade with a new design and health features.

Expected to arrive roughly around a year from now, the iPhone 16 series of smartphones may include the purported successors to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Gurman states that these Pro models will be equipped with bigger screens than the handsets that were just launched with a new titanium chassis. Apple is reportedly seeing “robust demand” for its iPhone 15 Pro Max model with shipments delayed to November in some regions, including the US.

The iPhone 16 lineup aren’t the only devices from the company expected to feature upgraded displays. Apple will also upgrade its 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro model with an OLED display, according to Gurman. It was previously reported that the next iPad Pro model is also expected to debut with new accessories including an improved Magic Keyboard.

While Apple introduced its first 3nm chip — the A17 Pro — on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, the company’s transition to 3nm chips for its Mac computers is expected to take place beyond 2023, according to Gurman, who adds that the purported M3 chip is — expected to succeed the 5nm M2 chip from Apple — will arrive on new MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and Mac models.

The iPhone maker announced earlier this year that it plans to sell its first wearable spatial computer — the Apple Vision Pro — in early 2024. At $3,499 (roughly Rs. 2.9 lakh), the company isn’t expected to ship as many units of the product as its more affordable devices. However, Gurman predicts that the device will help draw more customers for Apple’s other products, as it will be present at retail stores next year.

Apple Could Reveal Mac Products With M3 Chip by October This Year: Mark Gurman

Apple introduced a series of products at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2023 in June this year, which included a new 15-inch MacBook Air model, a Mac Studio and Mac Pro, all powered by Apple‘s M2 chips. However, there was no discussion on the much-awaited M3 chips, which are reported in production by the Cupertino-based tech giant. A new report from analyst Mark Gurman now suggests that the company is planning an October debut for M3 iMac, M3 13-inch MacBook Air and M3 MacBook Pro.

While Apple is speculated to launch a series of products at the upcoming event in September, including the much-awaited iPhone 15 and Apple Watch Series 9, the company is said to host another event in October. Analyst Mark Gurman, in his latest report for Bloomberg, has revealed that the tech giant could feature a number of Mac products with the M3 chips. These could include iMac, 13-inch MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro, also equipped with M3 chips.

The report doesn’t mention a specific timeline for the said event in October. Moreover, Apple has also not announced anything around the new M3 Mac products. Hence, the news should be taken with a pinch of salt for now.

A previous report tipped that the company is working on an iPad Pro model with 14.1-inch display. Moreover, Apple may unveil its M3 Pro processor by next year, which could be used in the purported tablet.

Another report, citing TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, suggested that Apple will use the 2nd-generation TSMC 3nm process for its M3 and A17 Bionic chips. It also mentioned that these chips will be powering the upcoming Mac computers in 2023. It also added that the M3 Pro or M3 Max processors are expected to go into production in the first half of 2024.

Apple Sees Rise in MacBook Air Demand Amid Decline in Q2 Global PC Shipments: Canalys

The decline in global personal computer shipments slowed in the second quarter, with Apple outperforming the market with a 51 percent jump thanks to strong demand for its recently launched 15-inch MacBook Air, data from research firm Canalys showed.

The report adds to early signs of a recovery in the industry, which has been banking on a new round of equipment upgrades by consumers and businesses to shake off its post-pandemic slump.

Canalys said the worldwide PC market declined by 12 percent in the second quarter of 2023, a much smaller fall than the over-30 percent drops seen in the previous two quarters, as it benefited from strong back-to-school demand.

“There are indications that many of the issues that have affected the sector are beginning to abate,” said Ishan Dutt, principal analyst at Canalys.

Apple grew the most among the major PC makers, with shipments hitting 6.8 million units and its market share expanding to 11 percent from 6.4 percent a year earlier, as supply-chain hurdles eased and it benefited from demand for the new MacBook Air.

Market leader Lenovo posted a shipment decline of 18.1 percent, smaller than the 30.3 percent fall posted in the previous quarter. HP and Dell also saw smaller falls, compared with the prior quarter.

“Inventory levels reduced further in Q2,” said Kieren Jessop, research analyst at Canalys. “All customer segments are set to improve sequentially for the remainder of 2023, amid a final push of inventory corrections and stronger seasonality in the latter half of the year.”

Still, Canalys said it expects 2023 shipments to be lower than 2022 as consumers prioritize spending on essentials in the face of high inflation and rising interest rates.

MacBook Air 2023 with a 15-inch display is expected to be announced on June 5 at the annual Apple Worldwide Developers Conference 2023, according to a report. There have been several reports speculating the launch of this Apple device. Earlier reports have suggested a June release and the same has been reinstated by multiple resources. In the previous report, Gurman said, citing internal company logs, that the new MacBook Air laptop will continue to feature the M2 chipset from last year’s model. The company is also reportedly testing the macOS 14, which they are expected to introduce alongside other new software at the WWDC event.

Apple Could Launch a 15.5-Inch MacBook Air in Early April, Suggests Another Report

Apple is reportedly working on a version of the MacBook Air with a 15.5-inch display. There hasn’t been a word from the Cupertino company regarding the existence of the MacBook Air model. However, Ross Young of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) believes that the panel production for the 15.5-inch MacBook Air has started in February. Furthermore, Young expects an early April launch for this model. There have been rumours suggesting the 15.5-inch MacBook Air could come with two CPU options — an M2 or M2 Pro chipset.

According to a 9to5Mac report, there is a possibility that Apple might launch the MacBook Air with a 15.5-inch display in April this year. Young had previously suggested that panel production for the laptop will start in the first quarter of 2023. At the time, it was expected to make its debut sometime in spring 2023.

Furthermore, Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that the 15.5-inch MacBook Air could come with two CPU options. The M2 chipset-powered version is said to support 35W charging, whereas the M2 Pro chipset-powered model could offer 67W charging support. Kuo suggests that this upcoming laptop may not bear the MacBook Air moniker.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reportedly also believes that Apple is working on a 15-inch version of the MacBook Air, which may release as early as next spring. This model is expected to be an updated version of the 13.6-inch MacBook Air, which was unveiled at WWDC 2022.

This model gets a 13.6-inch Liquid Retina Display with a notch for the 1080p web camera. It is powered by an M2 chipset, which features a 10-core GPU. This laptop offers up to 2TB of SSD storage and can be configured with up to 24GB of unified memory. It is claimed to have a battery life of up to 18 hours and support 67W wired charging.

Apple Plans to Unveil 15.5-Inch MacBook Air in Spring 2023: Report

Apple is said to be working on a refreshed 15-inch MacBook Air, and details of the purported laptop have been previously surfaced online. The Cupertino-based tech major is yet to confirm the development of a new MacBook device, but DSCC analyst Ross Young suggests that the production of panels designed for the ‌upcoming MacBook Air model will start in the first quarter of 2023 with the possibility of a spring release date. The purported machine will sport a 15.5-inch display and is expected to debut as the largest ‌MacBook Air‌ to date.

As per a report by 9to5Mac quoting Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) analyst Ross Young, Apple is planning a new 15-inch MacBook Air model. The panel production for the laptop will start in the first quarter of next year, according to the analyst. The report further adds that it could go official sometime in spring 2023. The larger MacBook Air is said to feature a 15.5-inch display. The display of the laptop was previously rumoured to measure 15.2 inches.

Back in June, TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that the 15-inch MacBook will come in two CPU options — an M2 chipset with a 35W adapter and an M2 Pro chipset with a 67W adapter. According to Kuo, it will go into mass production next year and will be unveiled in the second quarter of 2023. The upcoming laptop will not bear the MacBook Air moniker, according to Kuo.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman also earlier suggested that Apple is working on a larger MacBook Air with a 15-inch screen for release as early as next spring alongside a larger 10-inch iPad. The model under development is speculated to be an updated version of the 13.6-inch MacBook Air.

Apple announced the 13.6-inch MacBook Air at WWDC 2022 in June. It is powered by the company’s M2 chip and offers up to 24GB of unified memory and up to 2TB of storage.

Price of the 13-inch MacBook Pro (2022) starts at Rs. 1,29,900 in India for regular customers. It has an initial price tag of Rs. 1,19,900 for educational uses. It is offered in Silver and Space Grey colour options.
