Samsung Acknowledges Galaxy S23 Touchscreen Issue With One UI 6.1, Offers Temporary Fix

Samsung started rolling out the One UI 6.1 update to older Galaxy devices last week. Following the rollout of the AI-focused software update, multiple users on the Web complained that it was causing touchscreen problems for their Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+ and Galaxy S23 Ultra models. Some users have claimed that the screen is completely unresponsive to touches after updating to One UI 6.1. Samsung finally acknowledged the problem on Wednesday (April 3) and offered a fix. The South Korean brand says compatibility issues with some Google app features caused the issue.

As per user reports on Reddit and the company’s support forum, some Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+ and Galaxy S23 Ultra series owners are facing unreliable touch input following the One UI 6.1 update. Through a post on Samsung’s Korean support forum, the company has acknowledged the touchscreen bug and offered a temporary workaround for the problem. According to Samsung, the Google Discover feed is creating touchscreen performance issues on the afflicted Galaxy S23 series smartphones.

Samsung suggests affected users to temporarily update the Google app via Google Play to the latest version, delete the app’s data, and then restart their devices to fix the issue. The apps’ storage can be deleted by tapping Settings > Apps > Google > Storage > Delete Data. Google is said to be working on a fix for the issue.

The One UI 6.1 update started rolling out globally to last year’s Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, Galaxy S23 Ultra, Galaxy S23 FE, Galaxy Z Fold 5, Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Tab S9 series in March last week. Several users have complained that the update is causing charging issues, and fingerprint scanner issues on Galaxy S23 models.

The AI-centric One UI 6.1 was announced in January during the launch of the Galaxy S24 series. It includes several AI-backed features as part of the Galaxy AI experience. These include Live Translate, Chat Assist, Note Assist, and Circle to Search.

Google’s Circle to Search Feature Rolling Out to Pixel 6 Series, Samsung Galaxy S23 Lineup, and More

Google’s Circle to Search was introduced in January this year with the Samsung Galaxy S24 series. This was packed alongside a few other AI-backed features like Live Translate and Note Assist. However, later that month, with the January Pixel feature drop, the tech giant brought the feature to the Pixel 8 models. Earlier in March, the company also extended this feature to the Pixel 7 lineup. Now, Google has announced that more Android handsets will have access to the Circle to Search tool.

The Mountain View-based search giant has confirmed that the feature is “currently rolling out to more Android devices”. The rollout will begin this week and it will be available on the Google Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 7a, Pixel Fold, and Pixel Tablet. It will also be available on the Samsung Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, Galaxy S23 Ultra, Galaxy S23 FE, Galaxy Z Fold 5, and Galaxy Z Flip 5 as well as the Galaxy Tab S9 series.

As of today, Google’s Circle to Search feature is already available in several flagship handsets including Samsung Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, Galaxy S24 Ultra, Google Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 8, and Pixel 8 Pro.

Google also mentioned in the post that the Circle to Search feature can help users shop for specific styles or items without much hassle. It can also assist users during their travels to foreign places, especially ones with a different language than their native ones, by instantly translating anything that is on their screen. All users need to do is long-press the home button or navigation bar and tap the translate option.

The Circle to Search feature allows users to search anything, instantly, without switching apps with a few gestures. Users can circle, scribble, highlight or tap anything on their screen, like images, part of an image or text, and opt for the search option. It not only gives information quicker but with Generative AI support, it is meant to aid in more complex research.

Samsung Galaxy S23, Galaxy Z Fold 5, More to Receive One UI 6.1 Update With Galaxy AI on March 28

Samsung announced the rollout timeline for the One UI 6.1 update, which is now confirmed to bring the Galaxy AI artificial intelligence (AI) features to more devices across the Galaxy ecosystem on Tuesday. The company confirmed that the AI features will be added to the Galaxy S23 series, Galaxy S23 FE, Galaxy Z Flip 5, Galaxy Z Fold 5, and the Galaxy Tab S9 series. The announcement comes after a report recently revealed that some Galaxy S23 series users in China were allegedly notified about the new update.

In its newsroom post, Samsung revealed that the One UI 6.1 update, the first major update to the Android 14-based One UI 6.0 that was released in October 2023, will begin rolling out across the Galaxy S23 series, Galaxy S23 FE, Galaxy Z Fold 5, and Galaxy Z Flip 5 in the US starting March 28. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 series will also get the update beginning this week. Most users are expected to begin receiving the update in April. While the company did not mention a global rollout, it is expected to be available in all regions next month.

Making the announcement, the company said, “Galaxy AI puts our groundbreaking suite of AI tools in the palm of more users’ hands in different form factors — tailoring the mobile experience to their needs.”

The South Korean tech giant first announced the expansion of Galaxy AI features to more devices earlier in March. Now, once the update rolls out, users will be able to use features such as Circle to Search, which adds the capability to draw a circle to highlight or select an object and run a visual search on Google, all while staying on the app. Another feature is Live Translate which allows two-way, real-time voice and live caption translations of phone calls. Samsung’s AI-based photo editing tool Generative Edit as well as Chat Assist in Samsung Keyboard will also arrive with the One UI 6.1 update.

Last week, a report highlighted that TM Roh, the President of Samsung’s mobile division, said at the company’s shareholders’ meeting in Seoul that some of the Galaxy AI features could also be expanded to the Samsung Galaxy S22 series. The series was reportedly not considered to get the AI features due to a lack of required hardware capabilities.

Samsung One UI 6.1 With Galaxy AI Might Debut on Galaxy S23 Series This Week

Samsung’s One UI 6.1 was announced in January with the launch of the Galaxy S24 series. The Android 14-based custom skin includes several AI-based features, dubbed Galaxy AI, could reach older Galaxy handsets soon. Last year’s Galaxy S23 series and its latest foldables were said to get Galaxy AI features initially. Samsung has allegedly notified some Galaxy S23 series users in China that a new update will be landing on March 28. The global rollout may take place later.

Samsung enthusiast Tarun Vats on X claimed that the company has notified some Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, and Galaxy S23 Ultra users in China that a new update will be landing on March 28. The tipster posted a screenshot on the microblogging platform highlighting the notification. Separately, he posted that the Galaxy S23 FE in Korea will also get all the AI functions of the Galaxy S24. If this rumour turns out to be true, we can expect a wider rollout in the coming weeks.

A month ago, Samsung confirmed that the Galaxy S23 series and latest foldables will receive the new One UI 6.1 update sometime in March. The company didn’t reveal an exact release date for the update. The Galaxy S23 series, the Galaxy Z Fold 5, and Galaxy Z Flip 5 smartphones are confirmed to be the first to receive the new custom skin. The Galaxy S23 FE, and Galaxy Tab S9 series are also believed to get the update in the first half of this year.

Samsung’s One UI 6.1 includes many AI-backed features Live Translate, Chat Assist, Note Assist, and Circle to Search as part of the new Galaxy AI experience introduced on the Galaxy S24 lineup. The Chat Assist functionality can be used to translate languages in real-time or perform tone corrections in texts and emails. The Google-backed Circle to Search combines text-based queries with visual search. Live Translate is effective for two-way real-time voice and text translations of phone calls. Samsung plans to bring the Galaxy AI to over 100 million devices worldwide this year.

Samsung Galaxy AI Features Coming to Galaxy S23 and Other Models With One UI 6.1 Update

Samsung has announced that it will roll out its Galaxy AI features to owners of the company’s previously released smartphones and tablets as part of its upcoming One UI 6.1 update. This means that the company’s AI features that arrived with the Galaxy S24 series of smartphones, such has Circle to Search, Live Translate, Interpreter mode for phone calls, Instant Slow-mo for videos, Note Assist, Browsing Assist, and AI generated wallpapers will soon be available on older Samsung Galaxy devices.

The South Korean tech conglomerate announced on Thursday that its upcoming One UI 6.1 update will bring Galaxy AI features to the Samsung Galaxy S23 series, the Galaxy Z Fold 5, and Galaxy Z Flip 5 smartphones. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 series will also be updated to One UI 6.1, with support for the new AI features available on the Galaxy S24 lineup.

The first Galaxy AI feature that is making its way to the company’s older phones and tablets is Circle to Search, which adds the ability to draw a circle around, highlight, or select objects and text in images to search on Google — without leaving the current app. Samsung introduced this feature last month with the arrival of the Galaxy S24 series.

The upcoming update will also add Galaxy AI features to the company’s inbuilt applications such as Live Translate for phone calls, texting in 13 languages using Chat Assist, and an Interpreter mode for real time translation. The Samsung Notes, Samsung Internet, and Recorder apps will also get support for Note Assist, Browsing Assist, and Transcript Assist features, respectively.

Meanwhile, generative AI-powered features are coming to the company’s older Galaxy smartphones and tablets. Generative Edit will allow users to “resize, reposition or realign objects” in images, according to the company. Instant Slow-mo will automatically generate more frames to produce slow–motion videos from regular ones.

Samsung says that the One UI 6.1 update that is based on Android 14 will be rolled out to the Galaxy S23 lineup, the Galaxy Z Fold 5, and Galaxy Z Flip 5, and the Galaxy Tab S9 series by the end of March. The company adds that some Galaxy AI features on the S24 series may not be supported on older models, and some features will require an Internet connection, a Samsung account, or the company’s inbuilt applications.

Samsung Galaxy S24’s Instant Slow-Mo Feature Is Coming to Older Galaxy Devices

Samsung Galaxy S24 series launched with several unique features, one of which was Instant Slow-Mo. The feature allows users to watch recorded videos in slow motion just by long pressing onto it, without any need to record it in slow motion or edit the effect manually. So far, the feature was exclusive to the newly launched Galaxy S24 series including the vanilla Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and the Galaxy S24 Ultra. But now, Samsung is expanding it to older phones as well.

In the official South Korean community forum of Samsung, a moderator announced the development on February 13. After sharing details of the feature, they announced that as many as eight older smartphones will soon support the Instant Slow-Mo feature. These include the Samsung Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, Galaxy S23 Ultra, Galaxy Tab S9, Galaxy Tab S9+, Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra, Galaxy Z Flip 5, and the Galaxy Z Fold 5.

As to why just these eight, the post explained that the feature requires a powerful Neural Processing Unit (NPU) and Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) with a minimum processing speed of 16.6 milliseconds for 60fps videos. Incidentally, all the eight listed smartphones are powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, which appears to be the minimum threshold for this feature. As such, it is unlikely that the feature will ever make it to Samsung phones running on older or less powerful processors.

Interestingly, Samsung described the Instant Slow-Mo feature as “time zoom”. In the post, the moderator explained just like spatial zoom in still images, where users can stretch the image to see finer details, for the slow-motion feature, the company stretches the time taken between each frame of the video, allowing users to see the finer details in the motion and making it appear to be slowed down. The post did not mention when this feature might reach older handsets. However, some reports suggest it could arrive with the One UI 6.1 update expected next month.

The Instant Slow-Mo feature currently only supports 8-bit videos shot between 720p to 8K resolution and in the MP4 file format. The post also highlighted that the South Korean tech giant intends to improve the feature and might add support for 10-bit videos shot in 480p resolution and MOV file format.

India Smartphone Shipments Grew 25 Percent YoY in Q4 2023, Xiaomi Climbs to the Top: Counterpoint

Smartphone shipments in India grew by a significant 25 percent year-on-year (YoY) for the October-December period (Q4) in 2023, as per a new report by market research firm Counterpoint. Xiaomi climbed to the top position in the quarter with 18 percent of the market share, a first since Q3 2022. The feat was achieved on the back of the company’s foray into the affordable 5G segment with its Redmi 13C. Vivo retained its second spot, followed by Samsung which slipped to third after leading the market for four consecutive quarters. Chinese smartphone brands Realme and Oppo grabbed the fourth and fifth spot, respectively.

In its report, Counterpoint highlighted the 61 percent contribution of 5G smartphones as one of the major factors behind the growth in the quarter. Notably, 5G phones in the affordable Rs. 10,000 – Rs. 15,000 price band contributed 24 percent of the total smartphone shipments. The premium smartphone segment also witnessed a 51 percent growth. Apple led the segment with a 17 percent market share, as a result of the iPhone 15 series launch.

Coming to brand-wise comparison in the top five positions, Xiaomi appeared as the market leader taking 18 percent of the market share. Vivo remained in the second position for a remarkable fourth quarter in a row, capturing 17 percent of the smartphone market. In the third spot, Samsung was only able to grab 16.8 percent of the share, after a strong Q3 showing where it dominated the market. Realme featured at the fourth position, taking 11 percent of the market share. The report also highlighted that the company was the fastest-growing brand with a 69 percent YoY growth. With a 10 percent hold of the market, Oppo retained the fifth spot.

However, despite a good quarter, the wider landscape for smartphone shipments in India in 2023 remained flat at 152 million units, a separate Counterpoint report highlighted. The market research firm noted challenges emerging from macroeconomic turbulence resulting in low demand and an inventory build-up in the first half of 2023 as the reason for the lack of growth. “The market started recovering in the second half of the year supported by 5G upgrades and better-than-expected festive sales,” the report added.

Samsung held the top position in 2023 after taking 18 percent of the market due to strong showing in the first three quarters. This is the first time the South Korean tech conglomerate led a calendar year since 2017. Notably, the company launched the Samsung Galaxy S23 series along with the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the Galaxy Z Flip 5 in 2023. Showing a stable performance, Vivo retained the second spot with a 17 percent share. Chinese smartphone brands Xiaomi, Realme, and Oppo occupied the next three spots with 16.5 percent, 12 percent, and 10.5 percent of the market share, respectively.

While Apple did not feature in the top five positions in shipments, it surpassed the ten million mark in revenue for the first time in a calendar year, leading the category.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Series Pre-Order Details Leak Out; Galaxy S24+ Spotted on Walmart Listing

Samsung Galaxy S24 series is expected to be unveiled on January 17 and past rumours have already given us a fair idea of what to expect from the new flagship phones. The most recent leaks suggest video recording upgrades on the Samsung Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra along with some pre-order perks. The regular models are also tipped to be priced lower than their predecessors. The Galaxy S24 Ultra, in contrast, could see a price jump across all three storage variants. Meanwhile, Walmart accidentally listed the Galaxy S24+ on its online website, whereas Samsung retailers in Brazil have also started teasing the phone ahead of the debut.

On X (formerly Twitter), Tipster Ice Universe (@UniverseIce) posted that Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S24 phones will be priced slightly lower than expected. He claimed that Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ stock is large this time as the company is optimistic about the upcoming phones. Further, the Galaxy S24 series is said to offer the ability to view HDR photos.

In a separate post, he hinted that the the Galaxy S24 Ultra will be able to record footage at 4K 120 frames per second (fps). The current Galaxy S23 Ultra supports 8K and 4K video recording. However, the 8K videos are capped at 30fps and the 4K videos are capped at 60fps.

Additionally, a post by the South Korean blog Naver says Samsung will provide pre-order bonuses for early buyers of Galaxy S24 Ultra. Like previous times, early adopters could receive higher storage variants of the phone at no extra cost. Additional pre-order bonuses are said to include discount coupons for the Galaxy Watch or Galaxy Buds FE.

Meanwhile, Walmart has accidentally listed the Samsung Galaxy S24+ ahead of the rumoured January 17 debut. The listing shows the handset in an onyx black shade with 12GB of RAM. The screenshot of the e-commerce listing shared by PhoneArena reveals AI-powered features of the handset — Live Translate, Generative Edit, and Nightography Zoom.

The Walmart listing suggests a 6.7-inch display for the Galaxy S24+. This is an upgrade over the 6.6-inch screen on the Galaxy S23+. It is seen with a 4,900mAh battery.

Furthermore, tipster CID (@theonecid) on X claimed that Samsung retailers in Brazil had started posting promotional posters of the Galaxy S24 Ultra ahead of the announcement. A leaked poster shows a quad rear camera unit and a colour-matched S Pen.

The rumoured launch date of Galaxy S24 lineup is two weeks away, so we can expect to hear more about the flagships in the coming days. In the meantime, you can check our coverage here.
