The handsets might also be able to expand the borders of photos with AI. CERT-in Flags High-Risk Security Flaws in Apple, Samsung Devices; iPhone, iPad Vulnerable to Exploits

Apple, Samsung and other smartphone manufacturers issue timely updates and security patches to keep their devices robust against various threats and vulnerabilities. Despite regular fixes, both iOS and Android platforms could fall prey to malicious exploits. The government has issued high-risk security alerts for users of both Apple and Samsung devices. The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has flagged severe vulnerabilities in Apple and Samsung products this week. The reported vulnerabilities could put users’ sensitive information at risk.

In an advisory issued December 15, CERT-In reported multiple vulnerabilities in Apple products. These vulnerabilities affect iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, Apple Watch and Safari Web browser. According to CERT-In, iOS and iPadOS versions prior to 17.2 and 16.7.3, macOS Sonoma versions prior to 14.2, macOS Ventura versions prior to 13.6.3, macOS Monterey versions prior to 12.7.2, tvOS versions prior to 17.2, watchOS versions prior to 10.2, and Safari versions prior to 17.2 are all facing high-risk vulnerabilities.

“Multiple vulnerabilities have been reported in Apple products which could allow an attacker to access sensitive information, execute arbitrary code, bypass security restrictions, cause denial of service (DoS) conditions, bypass authentication, gain elevated privileges, and perform spoofing attacks on the targeted systems,” CERT-In said in the advisory.

The nodal security agency, which comes under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), warned that two of the vulnerabilities reported, CVE-2023-42916 and CVE-2023-42917, could be exploited by malicious entities and urged users to update to the latest OS patches.

Additionally, CERT-In also issued a vulnerability note for Samsung products on December 13, flagging Android versions 11, 12, 13, and 14 on Samsung devices under high risk of threats that could allow attackers to bypass security restrictions, access sensitive user information, and run arbitrary code on the targeted system.

The vulnerabilities on Samsung devices could be exploited to access device SIM PIN and send a broadcast with elevated privilege, among other actions. Samsung users can get the newest OS update on their devices, along with the latest security patch, to avoid falling prey to these threats.

Last month, CERT-In had warned of multiple security vulnerabilities affecting older iPhone and iPad models. In its vulnerability note CIVN-2023-0303 issued earlier in October, CERT-In had flagged security flaws that had affected older versions of iOS and iPadOS. The vulnerabilities affected OS versions prior to iOS 16.7.1 and iPadOS 16.7.1, according to the agency.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Series May Offer Same Price Tags as Predecessor; Said to Get Satellite Connectivity

Samsung Galaxy S24 series is not yet officially confirmed by the South Korean tech brand, even though leaks and renders have been in abundance. The flagship lineup expected to include the vanilla Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra models is expected to go official in January next year. Samsung is anticipated to keep the prices of the Galaxy S24 series the same as its Galaxy S23 series. Additionally, a new leak reiterated the existence of the emergency satellite texting feature in the Galaxy S24 lineup.

As per a report by Korean publication Hankyung, the Galaxy S24 series will have the same price as the Galaxy S23 range. This essentially means the upcoming Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra will have a starting price tag of $799 (roughly Rs. 65,500), $999 (roughly Rs. 81,900), and $1199 (roughly Rs. 98,300), respectively in the US.

Samsung’s plan to equip Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC on the Galaxy S24 Ultra and its in-house Exynos 2400 chip on the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24 Plus in select markets is expected to help the company maintain pricing. The company reportedly has set a product sales target of over 33 million units due to this price freeze policy. This would mark a 10 percent increase over the Galaxy S23 series.

Separately, a report by SamMobile alleges that Samsung will bring an emergency satellite texting feature for the Galaxy S24 series. The report includes a screenshot from a Galaxy phone showing the functionality dubbed ‘Emergency texts via satellite’. This feature lets users send emergency texts using satellite connectivity when they are out of range or not connected to a mobile network.

Apple introduced satellite connectivity with the iPhone 14 last year. The feature allows users to contact emergency services during situations like natural disasters and wilderness adventures. The Emergency SOS asks people questions about their situation and then transmits the data to the relay centre and emergency services. Initially, this service was exclusive to the US and Canada and Apple expanded its availability to more countries recently.

Samsung has not yet disclosed the launch date of the Galaxy S24 series, however, it is anticipated to be unveiled on January 17.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra Camera, Display Details Tipped Again; Said to Be Brighter Than iPhone 15 Pro Max

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is expected to launch on January 17, 2024, alongside the vanilla Galaxy S24 and the Galaxy S24+. The phone will succeed the Galaxy S23 Ultra, which was unveiled in February this year. Over the past few months, the Galaxy S24 models have been spotted on several certification and benchmarking sites recently and several key details of the handsets, including design renders, have surfaced online. Now, a tipster has suggested the display and camera specifications of the Galaxy S24 Ultra.

Tipster Ahmed Qwaider (@AhmedQwaider888) leaked the camera details of the upcoming Galaxy S24 Ultra in a post on X. According to the tipster, the rumoured quad camera unit of the handset will feature a 200-megapixel primary sensor, a 12-megapixel sensor with an ultrawide lens, a 50-megapixel sensor with 5x telephoto lens, and a 10-megapixel sensor with a 10x telephoto lens.

As per the tipster, the rear camera system of the Galaxy S24 Ultra will support video recording at 8K with optical image stabilisation (OIS). He also claims that the back and front camera units of the phone will be equipped with an AI-supported object-aware engine.

In another post, this tipster states that the panel of the Galaxy S24 Ultra will offer a peak brightness level of 2,600 nits, which he notes is considerably higher than the 2,000 nits peak brightness of the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which is perceived to be Samsung’s main competitor. Notably, the preceding Galaxy S23 Ultra claimed to have a peak brightness level of 1,750 nits.

Several earlier leaks have suggested that the Galaxy S24 Ultra will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset paired with up to 12GB of RAM and up to 1TB of onboard storage. The phone is likely to carry a 6.8-inch QHD+ display with a refresh rate of 120Hz. It could also come with a 12-megapixel front camera and a 5,000mAh battery.
