Samsung One UI 6.1 Update Hits Galaxy S22 Series, Galaxy S21 Series, Older Foldables

Samsung has started rolling out One UI 6.1 to its 2021 and 2022 flagship Galaxy smartphones in South Korea. The Android 14-based custom skin brings several enhancements along with a slew of AI features to the Galaxy S22 family, Galaxy S21 series, and the previous Galaxy foldable phones. However, the older smartphones might not get the entire Galaxy AI suite. The One UI 6.1 update was announced in January with the launch of the Galaxy S24 series. The update was made available to the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 in March.

As per multiple posts on Samsung community forums (first spotted by SamMobile), Samsung is rolling out the One UI 6.1 update for the Galaxy S21 series, Galaxy S22 series, Galaxy Z Flip 3, Galaxy Z Fold 4, Galaxy Z Fold 3, and Galaxy Z Flip 4.

The update is currently rolling out to eligible devices in South Korea, though other regions are expected to receive it soon.

With the latest update, Samsung’s 2021 and 2022 flagship S series and Z series phones get access to Galaxy AI features. The changelog shared by users indicates that older models like the Galaxy S21 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 could only receive the Circle to Search feature as part of the One UI 6.1 update. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 also seems to be getting AI-generated wallpapers and generative AI-powered editing among others.

Users in South Korea can manually check for the update by heading to Settings > Software update > Download and Install. It is recommended to update smartphones while connected to a strong Wi-Fi network as it is a massive update with a size of around 3GB.

The Galaxy S24 family arrived in January with One UI 6.1 preinstalled. The smartphone giant started rolling out the update for the Galaxy S23 family, Galaxy Z Fold 5 and more in late March. It is expected to bring the update to several more older devices like the Galaxy Tab S8 series shortly.

Samsung Tipped to Bring Back Vertically Scrolling App Drawer via the Good Lock App

Samsung could bring back the vertically scrolling app drawer later this year, according to a leak. The feature is said to be added through the Good Lock app via the One UI 6.1.1 update expected later this year. The feature is tipped to be added to the Home Up module. Notably, the Good Lock suite did offer a vertically scrolling app drawer earlier, but it was removed after the One UI 6.0 update last year, to the disappointment of many users.

The information comes from a post by tipster @theonecid on X (formerly known as Twitter) who shared a screenshot of a Samsung Community thread. In the screenshot, a moderator who introduced himself as part of Good Lock support team, said, “In the case of the Home Up apps list, we are preparing to provide this feature in One UI 6.1.1. However, please understand that the support schedule may change in unavoidable cases.” We, at Gadgets 360, could not verify this post.

At present, Samsung smartphones have a horizontally scrolling app drawer where apps are listed in multiple pages that users can swipe through. This interface is different from what most Android smartphones offer. While the South Korean tech giant never had a native app drawer that could be scrolled up and down, it offered users the option to add it through Good Lock app, which is a large suite of modules for Galaxy devices and offers multiple customisation options for the phones. It was, however, removed with the introduction of One UI 6.0.

The post did not share any date of release for One UI 6.1.1, however, it is believed that the update might be added in July, when the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 are rumoured to arrive. It should be noted that the information has not come from official channels of the company, and the plans, even if true, can change at a later date.

Samsung is currently gearing up to launch new devices in India and other global markets. The teaser of the upcoming launch was spotted on the Samsung Shop application that confirmed that the new launch will take place on March 11 at 2:30pm IST. While the names of the smartphones were not revealed, it is believed that Samsung Galaxy A35 5G and Galaxy A55 5G might be launched on the given date.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Series Gets Always-on Lock Screen Wallpaper Similar to iPhone 15 Pro Models: Report

Samsung’s recently announced Galaxy S24 series comes packed with some interesting AI-enabled software features, but there’s something quite interesting that the brand left out at launch and we have a good idea why it did so. Samsung has quietly included a new always-on lockscreen wallpaper feature, which takes advantage of their new LTPO displays. If you think that this new One UI 6.1 feature sounds familiar, that’s because it appears very similar to Apple’s always-on Lock screen wallpaper feature, which is available on recent iPhone Pro models. But Samsung seems to have added its own twist to it.

According to SamMobile, the feature builds on the previously available always-on display (AOD) which has been available on several smartphones from various brands. The standard Android AOD feature basically shows the time, date, and weather along with some icons from the notifications tray to keep users updated about what’s happening on their devices. This glanceable data is almost always displayed over a black background (to save power) and users can choose to keep it on all the time, have it scheduled or on a ‘tap to show’ basis.

Samsung basically adds another layer to it by allowing the lockscreen wallpaper to shine through, taking advantage of the new and reportedly more power-efficient LTPO panels, which can refresh at 1Hz, while sipping on as little power as possible. Samsung also lets users erase the background of its lockscreen wallpaper, keeping only the subject visible, which should in theory consume less power compared to having the whole screen lit up (albeit in a dimmed mode) all the time.

While it appears to be similar in function to Apple’s always-on lock screen feature, it’s quite different in principle because Samsung will only show the same set of notification icons along with time, date and weather, while Apple’s implementation actually shows a very dimmed version of the lock screen itself when in this mode, which also lets you glance at details in the notifications and more.

The source also confirmed that the new feature (although a part of One UI 6.1) will not be arriving on the older Galaxy S23 series. The reason for the same is said to be the new and more power efficient AMOLED panels which are said to be superior to the older models. So, for now, it will only be available on the Galaxy S24 Ultra, Galaxy S24+, and the Galaxy S24 and are switched on by default on these models.

Apple introduced its always-on lock screen wallpaper feature with the iPhone 14 Pro models back in 2022. Initially it was not well-received as it appeared to drain a reasonable amount of power when activated. Apple then came up with a workaround giving users the option to hide the wallpaper in the background and only show the time, date and lockscreen notifications. Things seem to have improved with the iPhone 15 Pro Max when we reviewed it, as it had little impact on its battery life. It remains to be seen how well Samsung’s implementation of the same turns out.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra Said to Get Feature to Erase a Subject From Video, Improved Night Mode

Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series is expected to arrive in a few weeks, but more leaks have surfaced online giving us a sneak peek at some of its AI features. The upcoming Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra are said to come with several AI-based camera improvements as part of One UI 6.1. It is said to include a new AI feature to remove unwanted subjects from video clips and an on-device AI chatbot. The Galaxy S24 could be able to gather important details from calls, and Galaxy S24 Ultra, being the premium option in the lot, is expected to offer an improved night mode.

Tipster BenIt Bruhner Pro (@BennettBuhner) has highlighted a bunch of AI improvements expected on the Galaxy S24 series as part of One UI 6.1. As per the tipster, the upcoming lineup will comprise a new AI-based feature to erase subjects from videos. Users would be able to remove unwanted subjects from the videos by selecting them. This rumoured feature could work like the Magic Eraser tool on the Google Pixel 8.

Further, the Galaxy S24 series is said to offer AI processing for videos to increase low-light performance, reduce graininess, and improve stability and exposure. The handsets might also be able to expand the borders of photos with AI. The series is also said to bring an on-device AI chatbot and could be able to take important information from calls and recommend actions such as putting things on your calendar and to-do list.

The post also confirms other rumours about in-call translation, auto-formatting capability in Samsung Notes, and AI-generated wallpapers. Samsung is tipped to add weather and portrait effect customisation to the lock screen and home screen in the Galaxy S24 series with One UI 6.1.

Additionally, tipster Ice Universe (@UniverseIce) claimed in an X post that the Galaxy S24 Ultra will receive improvements to Night Mode. Meanwhile, the 200-megapixel mode could also include AI optimisations. The handset could be able to identify 12 kinds of objects and optimise them for better image quality.

Samsung Galaxy S24 series is rumoured to go official on January 17 at the company’s Galaxy Unpacked event. The flagship Galaxy S24 Ultra is anticipated to come with a 200-megapixel quad rear camera unit alongside an AI-supported object-aware engine. The camera setup could also comprise a 12-megapixel ultra-wide angle sensor, a 50-megapixel sensor with 5x telephoto lens, and a 10-megapixel sensor with 10x telephoto lens. Samsung is expected to offer a 24-megapixel default camera resolution on the upcoming handsets.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Series Gets Android 14 Update With Revamped One UI 6 Interface: How to Download

Samsung Galaxy S23 series — comprising the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, and the Galaxy S23 Ultra — is receiving an update to Android 14 in India and other regions. The South Korean smartphone maker’s flagship handsets for 2023 are its first models to be updated to the latest version of Android and come with a revamped One UI 6 interface with improvements to the quick panel, multitasking, and a new default font. Users should receive a notification to download the update, or can perform a manual check from the settings app.

If you have a Samsung Galaxy S23, Samsung’s latest software update is available to download with build number S918BXXU3BWJM for users who opted to receive updates via the beta channel. It is a 350MB update for beta testers, while users who are updating from Android 13-based One UI 5.1 will have to download a larger 3GB update.

The update to the latest version of Android is now available to users in India, a few countries in Europe, and the UK. However, it appears that users in the US will have to wait a while longer as there are no reports of the update arriving in the country. Meanwhile, Samsung’s support page suggests that the Android 14 update for the Galaxy S23 series will be available in the US “soon”, along with a list of other smartphones that are confirmed to receive the update.

As part of the One UI 6 update that is based on Android 14, Samsung has introduced a new redesigned quick settings panel along with a modern media player in the notification area. While you still get circular toggles for various settings, the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth buttons are larger and located at the top of the screen. You can also quickly access the quick settings by swiping down from the top right corner, while swiping from the top left side will show the notification area.

Samsung has also updated the default font on One UI 6 that replaces the one that it has used since One UI was introduced in 2018. You can also switch back to the older font, and changing this setting affects how all your apps will appear. Meanwhile, all of Samsung’s emojis from One UI 5.1 have been redesigned and are slightly brighter.

Under the hood, the Android 14 update for the Galaxy S23 series also adds improvements to the Gallery app with support for new AI features, redesigned camera buttons, and support for preset widgets with configurations that can be placed on the home screen. Samsung has also introduced optimisations to the home screen and app drawer, as well as the ability to customise the position of the clock on the lock screen.

If you haven’t received a notification to download and install the Android 14-based One UI 6 update on your Samsung Galaxy S23 series smartphone, you can follow these steps to manually check for the update.

How to download the Android 14 update on the Samsung Galaxy S23

  1. Charge your smartphone to more than 50 percent and connect to a Wi-Fi network.
  2. Open the Settings app and tap Software update.
  3. Tap Download and install to begin checking for the update.
  4. Follow the steps on your screen to complete the installation of the update.
  5. Wait until your smartphone restarts and the update process will be complete.
