iPhone 15 Pro Max Emerges as Best Selling Smartphone in Q1 2024 as Apple, Samsung Dominate Top 10 List: Report

Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro Max was the best-selling model in Q1 2024, according to a report by a market research firm. The company’s flagship phones reportedly contributed to over half of Apple’s sales value in the same quarter. Four of the top five smartphones were from recent iPhone models, and the top 10 bestsellers were smartphones from both Apple and Samsung. Seven out of 10 models were high-end smartphones, while — in a first — all handsets in the list were 5G capable.

The latest Global Monthly Handset Model Sales Tracker by Counterpoint Research shows that Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro Max and the standard iPhone 15 model were in first and second place, respectively. In fact, all four models in Apple’s latest smartphone lineup were part of the top 10 best-selling smartphone list — the iPhone 15 Pro was in the third spot followed by the iPhone 14, while the iPhone 15 Plus came in eighth.

Just like Apple, South Korean tech conglomerate Samsung also had five smartphones in Counterpoint’s top-10 best-selling smartphones list. in Q1 2024, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra was in the fifth spot as the company’s top-selling handset. It was followed by the Samsung Galaxy A15 5G and Galaxy A54 in sixth and seventh spots, respectively.

The standard Galaxy S24 model was ninth in the list of Counterpoint’s top-10 handsets in terms of sales in Q1 2024. The phone came in behind the iPhone 15 Plus, which was a spot higher, according to the market research firm. The Galaxy A34 is the tenth phone in the market research firm’s list of top-selling smartphones.

Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max offered better hardware compared to the company’s standard models, and the differentiation led to more customers picking the high-end models, according to Counterpoint. These include a new Action button, a powerful A17 Pro chip, telephoto camera, and a titanium body.

Similarly, Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series of smartphones arrived with new generative AI (GenAI) features such as Circle to Search, Browsing Assist, and real time translation for calls. Counterpoint also notes that premium features like GenAI are expected to feature on more smartphones, as customers are waiting for longer periods before upgrading their handsets, due to limited hardware differentiation.

Circle to Search Could Soon Support Split Screen Mode on Pixel Phones: Report

Circle to Search reportedly suffers from a unique issue on the Google Pixel smartphones. It appears that the feature does not work when a user has enabled split screen mode that opens two different apps or windows at the same time. A report claims that Google is testing the issue and might soon fix it and allow users to access the feature even while working in split-screen mode. Notably, a recent report highlighted that the tech giant is also working on a feature that will allow users to capture partial screenshots of the selected screen.

According to a report by Android Authority (via Mishaal Rahman), this issue only exists on Pixel phones. The Samsung Galaxy S24 series apparently does show the Circle to Search feature even while on split-screen. The tipster, during his investigation, initially believed the problem emerged from Android’s Assist API on top of which the feature is built. However, he found that this was not the case.

This is how the Circle to Search appears on a Pixel phone’s split-screen mode

Later, while examining Pixel’s Launcher app in the latest Android 15 Beta 1.2, Rahman came across a flag, enabling which gave him access to activate Circle to Search even in split-screen mode. Based on this, the tipster claims that it is likely that Google is working on a fix for the issue that restricted Circle to Search from appearing. While a release date for the fix is not known, it is believed that it could be shipped with the next update for Pixel smartphones.

Google’s Circle to Search is a visual lookup tool that uses artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities to process the content displayed on the screen. It then runs it through Google Search to show results. It can be used to explain a particular word or phrase, find out the price of a dress, know more about a famous building, and more. The feature can also be used to copy a block of text displayed on the screen.

The tech giant is also planning to add more functionality to the feature. A report highlights that Google is working on adding partial screenshot capability to the feature. Two new options, Copy and Share, are said to pop up when selecting and highlighting a part of the screen. Reportedly, tapping on Copy takes it to the clipboard, which can then be edited via any photo editor app. Share allows users to directly share it with others through supported third-party apps.

Samsung Galaxy S24 FE Moniker and Model Numbers Reportedly Spotted Online

Samsung is said to be working on the Fan Edition of the Galaxy S24. The company launched its Galaxy S24 series of smartphones earlier this year, and Galaxy S24 FE, a pared back version of Samsung’s flagship phones, could arrive later this year. Now, the Fan Edition handset has reportedly been spotted online, with the listing suggesting the moniker and model numbers of the smartphone.

Android Headlines reportedly spotted the Samsung Galaxy S24 FE online, suggesting the manufacturer, market name, brand, and model numbers of the phone. The Galaxy S24 FE was reportedly listed with model numbers SM-S721B, SM-S721U, SM-S721W, and SM-S721N. The report claimed that the upcoming handset will officially be launched in markets like Americas, Korea, and Canada, in addition to be being sold globally.

The listing did not reveal any other details about the Galaxy S24 FE, including its specifications and launch timeline. Samsung has not yet confirmed its plans for the handset, as well. However, several reports and rumours have suggested that the company is working to bring the phone to market sometime later this year or in early 2025.

A report earlier this week had claimed that the South Korean technology giant was working on a new smartphone, codenamed R12. The codename corresponds to previous phones in the Fan Edition lineup — Galaxy S23 FE was associated with the R11 codename. R12 could thus refer to the upcoming Galaxy S24 FE.

Additionally, the report also claimed that the planned launch of the phone — earlier believed to be heading for a summer debut this year — had likely been pushed. Based on the current state of development, the Galaxy S24 FE is now said to arrive towards the end of 2024 or early 2025.

Earlier this month, the phone was reported to be planned for launch earlier than the usual release cycle of Fan Edition smartphones. The Samsung Galaxy S23 FE was launched in October last year, but its successor was said to arrive earlier in the summer of 2024.

Little is known about the upcoming smartphone from Samsung, but the Galaxy S24 FE has previously been tipped to feature a 6.1-inch AMOLED display. The phone is expected to run on either the Exynos 2400 or the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, depending on the market.

Samsung is reportedly also readying a Fan Edition of the Galaxy Watch, a cheaper Galaxy Watch model that could debut with a different moniker. The wearable, said to be under development, could launch as a refreshed Galaxy Watch 4.

Samsung Galaxy S24 FE in the Works, to Launch Earlier Than Usual: Report

Samsung Galaxy S23 FE was launched in October last year as a tweaked variant of the regular Galaxy S23. Now, the Galaxy S24 FE is said to be in the works as a successor. A new report from a Korean news outlet indicates that a Samsung supplier has started mass production of display driver chips for the Galaxy S24 FE and the handset will go official in the summer. This rumoured timeline is considerably earlier than the release of any previous Fan Edition model. The Galaxy S24 FE is expected to debut as a toned-down version of the vanilla Galaxy S24.

As per a report by The Elec, Galaxy S24 FE is scheduled to be released this summer. The report citing industry sources claims that a Samsung supplier has begun mass production of TED (TCON Embedded Driver IC) for the organic light emitting diode (OLED) of the upcoming Fan Edition smartphone.

The Galaxy S24 FE’s rumoured summer launch window (June to August) would be earlier than the Galaxy S23 FE launch. The latter was announced in October last year, around eight months after the debut of the Galaxy S23 series in February. The upcoming model is likely to come as a watered-down variant of Galaxy S24.

If this report turns out to be true, then Samsung will have an eventful second half this year. The company is expected to announce the Galaxy Ring, Galaxy Z Fold 6, Galaxy Z Flip 6, Galaxy Watch 7 lineup and more around July and August.

As per past leaks, the Galaxy S24 FE will get a 6.1-inch AMOLED display and could run on Exynos 2400 SoC or Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC depending on the market. It is said to feature 12GB LPDDR5X RAM and could be offered in 128GB and 256GB UFS 3.1 storage options. It is rumoured to be backed by a 4,500mAh battery.

Samsung One UI 6.1 With Galaxy AI Might Debut on Galaxy S23 Series This Week

Samsung’s One UI 6.1 was announced in January with the launch of the Galaxy S24 series. The Android 14-based custom skin includes several AI-based features, dubbed Galaxy AI, could reach older Galaxy handsets soon. Last year’s Galaxy S23 series and its latest foldables were said to get Galaxy AI features initially. Samsung has allegedly notified some Galaxy S23 series users in China that a new update will be landing on March 28. The global rollout may take place later.

Samsung enthusiast Tarun Vats on X claimed that the company has notified some Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, and Galaxy S23 Ultra users in China that a new update will be landing on March 28. The tipster posted a screenshot on the microblogging platform highlighting the notification. Separately, he posted that the Galaxy S23 FE in Korea will also get all the AI functions of the Galaxy S24. If this rumour turns out to be true, we can expect a wider rollout in the coming weeks.

A month ago, Samsung confirmed that the Galaxy S23 series and latest foldables will receive the new One UI 6.1 update sometime in March. The company didn’t reveal an exact release date for the update. The Galaxy S23 series, the Galaxy Z Fold 5, and Galaxy Z Flip 5 smartphones are confirmed to be the first to receive the new custom skin. The Galaxy S23 FE, and Galaxy Tab S9 series are also believed to get the update in the first half of this year.

Samsung’s One UI 6.1 includes many AI-backed features Live Translate, Chat Assist, Note Assist, and Circle to Search as part of the new Galaxy AI experience introduced on the Galaxy S24 lineup. The Chat Assist functionality can be used to translate languages in real-time or perform tone corrections in texts and emails. The Google-backed Circle to Search combines text-based queries with visual search. Live Translate is effective for two-way real-time voice and text translations of phone calls. Samsung plans to bring the Galaxy AI to over 100 million devices worldwide this year.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Series to Feature Baidu’s Ernie AI Chatbot in China

Samsung Electronics will feature Baidu’s Ernie Bot as a key attraction of its new Galaxy S24 smartphone series in China.

The South Korean maker has pitched its latest handset family as the first of a wave of AI smartphones, and Baidu’s artificial intelligence tools will help with text summarization, organization and translation, Baidu said in a statement. It will also provide the backend support for Samsung’s “circle to search” feature, which is handled by Alphabet’s Google in other markets.

Google’s Android software provides the backbone for the majority of smartphones in China, but the company’s add-on mobile services and app store are not available, leaving it to local companies to fill gaps with alternatives like Tencent Holdings’s WeChat.

For Baidu, the Samsung deal marks a major adopter of its Ernie AI, one of the earliest and best efforts to create a Chinese challenger to OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Samsung’s market share has crumbled in the world’s largest smartphone arena in past years to roughly 1-2 percent, crowded out by Apple’s iPhones as well as local brands from Xiaomi to Huawei Technologies. Showcasing Ernie prominently might appeal to its millions of existing users, as the Korean company safeguards its global presence and tries to pioneer a new mainstream category with foldables.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 vs Exynos 2400: Gaming Test Video Suggests the Gap Is Closing

The highly anticipated Samsung Galaxy S24 series went official last week. While the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC in the US, they run on Samsung’s in-house Exynos 2400 in most other territories, including India. The Galaxy S24 Ultra, in contrast, is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy in all markets. Early benchmark results indicated that Exynos 2400 drags behind the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. However, the chipsets have been pitted against each other in a new gaming test video measuring how powerful the CPUs and GPUs are. The video shows that Samsung’s flagship SoC manages to stay on par with Qualcomm’s offering while playing games like PUBG, Call of Duty, and Fortnite.

Technology channel NL Tech has released a 43-minute video on YouTube that compares the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC-powered Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra alongside the Exynos 2400-powered Galaxy S24+ in real-world gaming performance. The examination included popular titles such as FortniteGenshin Impact, PUBG Mobile, PUBG New State, Call of Duty: Mobile, War Thunder, and Mobile Legends. The YouTuber has enabled Samsung’s Game Booster and “Alternate game performance management” on the new handsets to ensure maximum capabilities before starting the tests.

Both Galaxy S24+ and Galaxy S24 Ultra performed similarly in Genshin Impact and PUBG Mobile by maintaining 60fps (frame per second). In PUBG New State, both phones managed to keep a stable frame rate of around 90fps. The phones achieved 60fps in Mobile Legends and both chips maintained 90fps, sometimes dropping to 70fps, in Fortnite.

The video highlights that the Snapdragon-powered Galaxy S24 Ultra led in Call of Duty: Mobile by maintaining a smooth 120fps. The Exynos-powered Galaxy S24+, on the other hand, was capped at 60fps. The Exynos 2400 makes a comeback by outperforming the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC in War Thunder by reaching 100fps backed by its Xclipse 940 GPU while the Snapdragon throttled down to 40fps.

The tests showed that both Exynos 2400 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipsets come neck and neck in delivering smooth gaming performance. Despite initial concerns, Samsung’s in-house chipset was able to stay on par with Qualcomm’s offering without any major performance discrepancy in games. The tests were carried out on pre-production hardware and the results might change after Samsung releases further optimisations.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Series Gets Always-on Lock Screen Wallpaper Similar to iPhone 15 Pro Models: Report

Samsung’s recently announced Galaxy S24 series comes packed with some interesting AI-enabled software features, but there’s something quite interesting that the brand left out at launch and we have a good idea why it did so. Samsung has quietly included a new always-on lockscreen wallpaper feature, which takes advantage of their new LTPO displays. If you think that this new One UI 6.1 feature sounds familiar, that’s because it appears very similar to Apple’s always-on Lock screen wallpaper feature, which is available on recent iPhone Pro models. But Samsung seems to have added its own twist to it.

According to SamMobile, the feature builds on the previously available always-on display (AOD) which has been available on several smartphones from various brands. The standard Android AOD feature basically shows the time, date, and weather along with some icons from the notifications tray to keep users updated about what’s happening on their devices. This glanceable data is almost always displayed over a black background (to save power) and users can choose to keep it on all the time, have it scheduled or on a ‘tap to show’ basis.

Samsung basically adds another layer to it by allowing the lockscreen wallpaper to shine through, taking advantage of the new and reportedly more power-efficient LTPO panels, which can refresh at 1Hz, while sipping on as little power as possible. Samsung also lets users erase the background of its lockscreen wallpaper, keeping only the subject visible, which should in theory consume less power compared to having the whole screen lit up (albeit in a dimmed mode) all the time.

While it appears to be similar in function to Apple’s always-on lock screen feature, it’s quite different in principle because Samsung will only show the same set of notification icons along with time, date and weather, while Apple’s implementation actually shows a very dimmed version of the lock screen itself when in this mode, which also lets you glance at details in the notifications and more.

The source also confirmed that the new feature (although a part of One UI 6.1) will not be arriving on the older Galaxy S23 series. The reason for the same is said to be the new and more power efficient AMOLED panels which are said to be superior to the older models. So, for now, it will only be available on the Galaxy S24 Ultra, Galaxy S24+, and the Galaxy S24 and are switched on by default on these models.

Apple introduced its always-on lock screen wallpaper feature with the iPhone 14 Pro models back in 2022. Initially it was not well-received as it appeared to drain a reasonable amount of power when activated. Apple then came up with a workaround giving users the option to hide the wallpaper in the background and only show the time, date and lockscreen notifications. Things seem to have improved with the iPhone 15 Pro Max when we reviewed it, as it had little impact on its battery life. It remains to be seen how well Samsung’s implementation of the same turns out.

Samsung’s first Galaxy Unpacked event of the year is just hours away. Ahead of the grand launch event, alleged promotional videos of the Galaxy S24 series have surfaced online offering a first look at the inbuilt Galaxy AI capabilities of the smartphones. The video suggests live translate and photo editing tools on the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra. The on-device AI technology is expected to provide real-time translations during calls.

X user Arsene Lupin (@MysteryLupin) has posted an alleged promotional video of the upcoming Galaxy S24 series. It offers a close-up look at the AI-based features of the smartphones.
