Samsung Galaxy S21, Galaxy Z Fold 3, Z Flip 3 to Get Only Two Galaxy AI Features With One UI 6.1 Update

Samsung Galaxy S21 series is set to receive the One UI 6.1 update, along with the company’s Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 foldable phones. However, unlike more recent models from the South Korean smartphone maker, these three handsets will only gain support for two new Galaxy AI features. One the past few months, Samsung has been rolling out One UI 6.1 to recent Galaxy Z and Galaxy S series phones, with support for up to 10 AI-powered features.

The company confirmed on Friday that Samsung Galaxy S21 series, Galaxy Z Fold 3, and Galaxy Z Flip 3 users will get access to two Galaxy AI features: Circle to Search and Chat Assist. The company’s announcement also contains a footnote stating that it will provide Galaxy AI features “for free until the end of 2025” — the same message that was shown on the company’s website when the Galaxy S24 series was launched earlier this year.

With the One UI 6.1 update, owners of the Samsung Galaxy S21 series, Galaxy Z Fold 3, and Galaxy Z Flip 3 will be able to use the Circle to Search feature that is currently exclusive to smartphones from Samsung and Google. Users can log press the navigation pill to summon an overlay that lets them draw around, scribble, or highlight a part of the screen to perform a visual lookup — without leaving the app they are using.

Chat Assist, another AI feature that is designed to help users compose texts in different languages, via seamless translation of incoming or outgoing messages, is also coming to all three handsets. Samsung says the feature is also designed to work with third party apps, which means users won’t have to open a translation app while messaging another user. Chat Assist is also designed to help users change the tone of their messages, according to the company.

Samsung’s announcement that it will update the Galaxy S21 series, Galaxy Z Fold 3, and Galaxy Z Flip 3 with these two features confirms that the company’s other Galaxy AI functionality won’t be making its way to these older handsets. AI features that won’t be a part of the update include Interpreter, Live Translate, Note Assist, Transcript Assist, Browsing Assist, Generative Edit, Edit Suggestion and AI-Generated Wallpaper.

Samsung One UI 6.1 Update Hits Galaxy S22 Series, Galaxy S21 Series, Older Foldables

Samsung has started rolling out One UI 6.1 to its 2021 and 2022 flagship Galaxy smartphones in South Korea. The Android 14-based custom skin brings several enhancements along with a slew of AI features to the Galaxy S22 family, Galaxy S21 series, and the previous Galaxy foldable phones. However, the older smartphones might not get the entire Galaxy AI suite. The One UI 6.1 update was announced in January with the launch of the Galaxy S24 series. The update was made available to the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 in March.

As per multiple posts on Samsung community forums (first spotted by SamMobile), Samsung is rolling out the One UI 6.1 update for the Galaxy S21 series, Galaxy S22 series, Galaxy Z Flip 3, Galaxy Z Fold 4, Galaxy Z Fold 3, and Galaxy Z Flip 4.

The update is currently rolling out to eligible devices in South Korea, though other regions are expected to receive it soon.

With the latest update, Samsung’s 2021 and 2022 flagship S series and Z series phones get access to Galaxy AI features. The changelog shared by users indicates that older models like the Galaxy S21 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 could only receive the Circle to Search feature as part of the One UI 6.1 update. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 also seems to be getting AI-generated wallpapers and generative AI-powered editing among others.

Users in South Korea can manually check for the update by heading to Settings > Software update > Download and Install. It is recommended to update smartphones while connected to a strong Wi-Fi network as it is a massive update with a size of around 3GB.

The Galaxy S24 family arrived in January with One UI 6.1 preinstalled. The smartphone giant started rolling out the update for the Galaxy S23 family, Galaxy Z Fold 5 and more in late March. It is expected to bring the update to several more older devices like the Galaxy Tab S8 series shortly.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 Leads Foldable Smartphone Segment in Q1 2022: DSCC

Samsung continues to dominate the foldable smartphone segment even after its market share fell to 74 percent in Q1 2022, according to a recent report from Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC). The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 led the market for the third consecutive quarter with a 51 percent share. Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 retained the second position for the third consecutive quarter, while Huawei P50 Pocket took the third spot. These three smartphones accounted for 91 percent of the market share. No other smartphone brand had more than a 2.5 percent share.

According to a report from DSCC, Samsung has continued to dominate the foldable smartphone category even after its market share fell to 74 percent in Q1 2022. Huawei’s shipment share rose to 20 percent; but no other brand was able to cross the 2 percent market share.

Clamshell models, including the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Huawei P50 Pocket accounted for 70 percent of market share. The Galaxy Z Flip 3 led the market for the third consecutive quarter with a 51 percent share, whereas the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 took the second position after being nearly overtaken by Huawei P50 Pocket. These three smartphone models accounted for a 91 percent market share in the category. No other smartphone brands were unable to cross the 2.5 percent market share.

The foldable smartphone shipments grew by a whopping 571 percent year-over-year in first quarter of 2022 to 2.22 million. The report says that this is the third best quarter till date for the category. However, the category saw itself shrinking by 47 percent quarter-over-quarter from the record high of 4.2 million smartphones shipped in Q4 2021.

Looking ahead, Ross Young, author of the report and co-founder, CEO of DSCC, said, “We expect a 107 percent increase in foldable smartphone shipments to over 16 million units with 102 percent increase in foldable smartphone panel shipments to over 20 million.”

Talking about Samsung’s upcoming smartphones, Young added, “Driving the growth will be Samsung’s ambitious plans for its upcoming Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4 launch as well as contributions from new models in 2H’22 (second half of 2022) from three other brands.”

He also said that one of the interesting developments to watch out for this year will be how the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 will perform. DSCC believes that Samsung has recently increased its expectations for the smartphone. Young further said that Samsung is expecting faster growth for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 in comparison to the Galaxy Z Flip 4 that likely indicates towards a lower launch price than last year’s $1,799 (roughly Rs. 1,40,000).
