Samsung One UI 6.1 Update Hits Galaxy S22 Series, Galaxy S21 Series, Older Foldables

Samsung has started rolling out One UI 6.1 to its 2021 and 2022 flagship Galaxy smartphones in South Korea. The Android 14-based custom skin brings several enhancements along with a slew of AI features to the Galaxy S22 family, Galaxy S21 series, and the previous Galaxy foldable phones. However, the older smartphones might not get the entire Galaxy AI suite. The One UI 6.1 update was announced in January with the launch of the Galaxy S24 series. The update was made available to the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 in March.

As per multiple posts on Samsung community forums (first spotted by SamMobile), Samsung is rolling out the One UI 6.1 update for the Galaxy S21 series, Galaxy S22 series, Galaxy Z Flip 3, Galaxy Z Fold 4, Galaxy Z Fold 3, and Galaxy Z Flip 4.

The update is currently rolling out to eligible devices in South Korea, though other regions are expected to receive it soon.

With the latest update, Samsung’s 2021 and 2022 flagship S series and Z series phones get access to Galaxy AI features. The changelog shared by users indicates that older models like the Galaxy S21 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 could only receive the Circle to Search feature as part of the One UI 6.1 update. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 also seems to be getting AI-generated wallpapers and generative AI-powered editing among others.

Users in South Korea can manually check for the update by heading to Settings > Software update > Download and Install. It is recommended to update smartphones while connected to a strong Wi-Fi network as it is a massive update with a size of around 3GB.

The Galaxy S24 family arrived in January with One UI 6.1 preinstalled. The smartphone giant started rolling out the update for the Galaxy S23 family, Galaxy Z Fold 5 and more in late March. It is expected to bring the update to several more older devices like the Galaxy Tab S8 series shortly.

Samsung secured pre-bookings for 1 lakh units of its fifth generation of ultra-premium foldable devices, Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5, in the first 28 hours of the launch of bookings in India, the company said on Thursday.

As compared to the fourth generation foldables (Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4), Samsung received 1.7 times more pre-bookings for Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5 during the first 28 hours, Samsung said in a statement.

The company launched the devices on July 26 and their pre-bookings were opened on July 27, 2023. The “Made in India” devices are scheduled to go on sale from August 18.

“We are delighted with the overwhelming response for our newly-launched Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 phones in India. The success of Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 shows that Indian consumers are highly sensitive to new innovations.

“I am confident that our new devices will help the mainstreaming of foldables, and help us consolidate our leadership in India,” Samsung Southwest Asia, President and CEO, JB Park said.

The Galaxy Fold 5 is priced between Rs. 1,54,000 lakh and Rs. 1,85,000 lakh apiece depending on the internal storage capacity which ranges from 256GB to 1TB. Samsung Galaxy Flip 5 will be available in the price range of Rs. 99,999 and Rs. 1,09,999 apiece.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 Teaser Video, Ahead of Galaxy Unpacked Event, Shows Off New Hinge Design, Colour Options

Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked event is set to take place on July 26 and its fifth iteration of foldable phones — the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the Galaxy Z Flip 5 — will be the show’s major highlights. Ahead of the event, Samsung has released a teaser video to give us a glimpse of the colour options of its next flagship clamshell foldable and its redesigned hinge. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 appears to have no gap between its folding halves when the phone is folded. This upgrade could be the biggest distinction between the new model and the current Galaxy Z Flip 4.

Via a teaser video, Samsung gave a clear look at the new Galaxy Z Flip 5. The company has posted the teasers with the “Join the flip side” hashtag. It shows the handset in cream, lavender and mint shades with a familiar clamshell design that folds horizontally in half with a cover display that lets users finish tasks without unfolding the phone. As expected, following multiple leaks and rumours, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 appears to have a new hinge design to eliminate the gap between both halves while folding.

The Galaxy Z Fold 5 is also expected to get a new waterdrop-style hinge that would allow the device to fold flat without any gap at the hinge. This might also let the phones stay flat when opened.

Samsung is gearing up to unveil the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 at its Galaxy Unpacked event on July 26 in Seoul, Korea. The tech giant has remained tight-lipped about the price and specifications of the new foldables but rumour mills have already suggested them.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is said to come with an initial price tag of EUR 1,199 (roughly Rs. 1,08,900). As for specifications, it could run on Android 13 with One UI 5.1.1 on top with a 6.7-inch full-HD+ (1,080, 2,640 pixels) Dynamic AMOLED main display and a variable refresh rate of up to 120Hz. The outer screen is tipped to be a 3.4-inch in size with up to 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. It is expected to be equipped with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. For optics, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is likely to sport a 12-megapixel primary camera alongside a 12-megapixel ultra-wide shooter. There could be a 10-megapixel selfie camera as well. It is expected to carry a 3,700mAh battery.

Samsung Galaxy A34 5G was recently launched by the company in India alongside the more expensive Galaxy A54 5G smartphone. How does this phone fare against the Nothing Phone 1 and the iQoo Neo 7? Samsung has reported a sharp rise in the demand for its 4th generation foldable phone – Galaxy Z Fold 4 among business users. The South Korean smartphone shared that the enterprise demand for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 rose by 105 percent from last year. The foldable smartphone shipments are expected to reach 16 million this year, and could grow up to 26 million next year. According to Samsung, features such as a large screen and ‘powerful app optimisations’ for foldable screens are the reason for the increased demand.

According to Samsung, the enterprise demand for its foldable phones has nearly doubled compared to last year. Between January and October 2022, the number of foldables Samsung shipped to enterprise users grew by 105 percent year-over-year.

Samsung states that around 16 million Galaxy Z Fold and Flip handsets are expected to ship this year and this could grow up to 23 million by the next year. As per Samsung, features such as multitasking on a large screen along with powerful app optimizations are some of the reasons for the growth in demand. These phones can be unfolded to offer a tablet experience with a 7.6-inch display, which lets users open up to three apps side-by-side via Multi Window.

“Samsung Galaxy foldable smartphones were created to open up opportunities for new ways to work and explore creativity. This rapid growth in investment demonstrates our enterprise customers’ need for meaningful innovations to enhance workforce productivity”, states KC Choi, EVP and Head of Global Mobile B2B Team, MX Business at Samsung Electronics.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 was launched earlier this year in August at the Galaxy Unpacked event. The handsets arrived with some major upgrades like a more power-efficient display and SoC than its predecessor – Galaxy Z Fold 3.

The base variant with 256GB of storage was launched at a price of Rs. 1,54,999 whereas the 512GB variant costs Rs. 1,64,999, and the 1TB storage variant costs Rs. 1,84,999 in India. Recently, some specifications of the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 5 were leaked online. The upcoming foldable devices from the South Korean smartphone company are tipped to get a dedicated S Pen slot.
