iPhone 15 Pro Max Emerges as Best Selling Smartphone in Q1 2024 as Apple, Samsung Dominate Top 10 List: Report

Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro Max was the best-selling model in Q1 2024, according to a report by a market research firm. The company’s flagship phones reportedly contributed to over half of Apple’s sales value in the same quarter. Four of the top five smartphones were from recent iPhone models, and the top 10 bestsellers were smartphones from both Apple and Samsung. Seven out of 10 models were high-end smartphones, while — in a first — all handsets in the list were 5G capable.

The latest Global Monthly Handset Model Sales Tracker by Counterpoint Research shows that Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro Max and the standard iPhone 15 model were in first and second place, respectively. In fact, all four models in Apple’s latest smartphone lineup were part of the top 10 best-selling smartphone list — the iPhone 15 Pro was in the third spot followed by the iPhone 14, while the iPhone 15 Plus came in eighth.

Just like Apple, South Korean tech conglomerate Samsung also had five smartphones in Counterpoint’s top-10 best-selling smartphones list. in Q1 2024, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra was in the fifth spot as the company’s top-selling handset. It was followed by the Samsung Galaxy A15 5G and Galaxy A54 in sixth and seventh spots, respectively.

The standard Galaxy S24 model was ninth in the list of Counterpoint’s top-10 handsets in terms of sales in Q1 2024. The phone came in behind the iPhone 15 Plus, which was a spot higher, according to the market research firm. The Galaxy A34 is the tenth phone in the market research firm’s list of top-selling smartphones.

Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max offered better hardware compared to the company’s standard models, and the differentiation led to more customers picking the high-end models, according to Counterpoint. These include a new Action button, a powerful A17 Pro chip, telephoto camera, and a titanium body.

Similarly, Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series of smartphones arrived with new generative AI (GenAI) features such as Circle to Search, Browsing Assist, and real time translation for calls. Counterpoint also notes that premium features like GenAI are expected to feature on more smartphones, as customers are waiting for longer periods before upgrading their handsets, due to limited hardware differentiation.

iPhone 16 Pro to Feature 120mm Tetraprism Camera From iPhone 15 Pro Max: Ming-Chi Kuo

iPhone 16 series is expected to arrive next year, but numerous leaks have already begun to surface online, giving us an idea of what to expect from Apple’s next flagship phones. Most recently, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reiterated his claim that both the iPhone 16 Pro and ‌iPhone 16‌ Pro Max will feature Apple’s tetraprism telephoto lens with improved zoom capabilities. This year the Cupertino giant included a new tetraprism lens system with the iPhone 15 Pro Max, enabling support for 5x optical zoom. The smaller ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌, on the other hand, supports 3x optical zoom.

TF International Securities analyst in a new blog post on Tuesday claimed that Apple would include a tetraprism camera in the iPhone 16 Pro next year. In the iPhone 15 lineup, Apple only equipped one model with a new telephoto lens with up to 5x optical zoom and a focal length of 120mm — the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The iPhone 15 Pro features a 12-megapixel telephoto camera that offers 3x zoom. This is in line with Kuo’s previous claims.

The addition of a tetraprism camera in the iPhone 16 Pro would lead to a 160 percent year-on-year growth for Apple’s smartphones, with the inclusion of the camera on both models in 2024, according to Kuo, who adds that lens manufacturer Largan is the exclusive supplier of quadruple reflex periscope camera lenses for the iPhone 15 Pro Max and the production yield was at only 40 percent. Kuo says that Largan has now significantly improved its yield rate to 70 percent or above.

Further, he states that Apple and Huawei are the two fastest-growing brands in global periscope camera smartphone shipments in 2024. Largan will be the primary supplier of periscope lenses for Apple and Huawei in 2024. Huawei’s P70, P70 Pro and P70 Art, which are expected to go into production in the first half of next year, will also feature periscope cameras.

Besides cameras, the iPhone 16 Pro models might bring display upgrades as well. As per a recent report, Apple could pack a 6.27-inch display on the iPhone 16 Pro and a 6.86-inch display on the iPhone 16 Pro Max. The Pro models could use 120Hz displays based on the low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) technology. The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models are said to maintain 6.12-inch and 6.69-inch displays with 60Hz refresh rate, respectively.

Google Pixel 9 Lineup Tipped to Launch With Qi2 Wireless Charging Support Available on iPhone 15 Series

The Qi2 (pronounced ‘Chi Two’) charging standard was announced earlier this year by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC). It succeeds the Qi wireless charging standard, is similar to Apple’s MagSafe technology, which debuted with the iPhone 12 and makes use of a comparable coil for wireless charging and magnet systems. The WPC claimed that the goal is to develop a single, integrated system that is expected to function with both iOS and Android devices. It, however, includes a new feature known as the Magnetic Power Profile, which guarantees that phones and other devices are positioned precisely for optimal charging efficiency and speed. It is also expected to ensure brand compatibility for certified devices.

The first Qi2 productions are reportedly “completing” certification testing, according to WPC. This indicates that the first Qi2 charging devices, which are expected to serve as the formal launch of the technology, will be available very soon. Anker, Belkin, and other accessories brands will be among the first to launch Qi2 charging technology products. The WPC added that there are presently more than 100 devices undergoing Qi2 testing or waiting to be certified.

One of the first smartphone models to use the new wireless charging technology will be the iPhone 15 series, according to the press release. As of now, we are only aware of chargers and battery packs as Qi2 products, with the exception of the iPhone 15 series of smartphones. Whether older MagSafe-supported iPhones are compatible with this standard is also unclear.

It is also speculated that the upcoming Google Pixel lineup, that is the Google Pixel 9 series, may be among the first Android phones to adopt Qi2 wireless charging technology. A WPC blog post, spotted by The Verge, welcomes Google senior hardware engineer Liyu Yang as one of the consortium’s board members. Yang has been working on Pixel handset’s wireless charging systems since 2017, according to her LinkedIn profile. WPC claims that Yang is currently in charge of the research and development of the upcoming Pixel products’ next-generation wireless charging technologies, thereby indicating that the successor to the Pixel 8 smartphones may come with Qi2 wireless charging support.

In addition to having improved safety features to stop device damage and battery life reduction, the Qi2 platform supports 15W charging and has foreign object identification capabilities. The WPC states that any items that adopt the new Qi v2.0 Extended Power Profile (EPP) but do not adopt magnets will not display the new Qi2 emblem, therefore the inclusion of magnets will also be the most noticeable change for consumers.

Apple Reseller Warns Against Using Android USB Type-C Charging Cable for iPhone 15 Series: Report

iPhone 15 series was launched on September 13 at the Apple ‘Wanderlust’ event. One of the significant changes in this year’s flagship lineup from the company was the inclusion of the USB Type-C charging ports, similar to several Android smartphones. However, if you are wondering about using the Android cable for charging iPhone 15 lineup, an Apple reseller has reportedly warned against this practice. As per a previous report, the USB Type-C port on the latest iPhone series support multiple functions.

The iPhone 15 lineup — including a base variant, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max — debuted at Apple’s launch event on September 13. The smartphones get significant changes over the predecessors in terms of its specifications. With this series, the company also introduced the USB Type-C port on all the recently launched Apple devices, similar to several Android smartphones.

However, if users are planning to use and Android cable on iPhone products, an Apple reseller in China has warned not to do so. According to a report on Chinese website CNMO, an Apple store in Foshan City of the Guangdong Province in China has issued an article to request iPhone users to avoid using Android’s USB Type-C charging cable on Apple smartphones as it may burn the devices.

The report also mentions that several users consider it to be a gimmick to ensure that buyers purchase the original Apple charging cables, in order to increase their revenue. It is to be noted that Apple has already mentioned on its support page that users can use USB Type-C standard cable to charge their recently launched iPhones.

To recall, the new USB Type-C port in Apple claims to provide 15 times more power than the lightning port’s 0.3W of output. The company offers a USB 2-compatible cable in the box on purchase of iPhone 15 Pro smartphones. For a better data transfer speed, users can purchase an optional USB-3-compatible cable from the company’s online, offline, and reseller stores.

iPhone 15 Pro Max Ranks Second on DxOMark’s Camera test

iPhone 15 Pro Max, the top-of-the-line smartphone in the iPhone 15 lineup, has ranked second in DxOMark’s camera test. The phone launched alongside the base iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone 15 Pro at the Apple Wonderlust event on September 12. Among the many sub-sections that the handset was marked on, there are multiple categories, including photo, video, zoom, preview and bouquet features.

According to the DxOMark test, the 15 Pro Max scored 154 points and ranked second only behind the Huawei P60 Pro which scored 156 points. The photos captured with the iPhone 15 Pro Max show good brightness and contrast when viewed on an HDR-enabled display.

The test concluded that the iPhone 15 Pro Max cameras also offer an almost-accurate exposure and natural colour and skin tone rendering with fast and accurate autofocus. The phone is also said to offer video stabilisation.

DxOMark states that the new zoom features of the flagship iPhone 15 model tended to be effective in general, but did not have consistency “across all ranges.” It added that the handset failed to mitigate “unwanted artefacts, including flare, ghosting, and aliasing” as well as disturbances in low-light photographs.

The preceding iPhone 14 Pro Max secured the ninth position on the scale. The newly launched handset features a 48-megapixel wide-angle camera, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera, a 12-megapixel 3x telephoto camera, and a 12-megapixel periscope camera with up to 5x optical zoom performance.

The triple rear camera of the iPhone 14 Pro Max packs a 48-megapixel sensor with a wide-angle lens with OIS, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide sensor, and a 12-megapixel telephoto sensor with a periscope lens. The front camera holds a 12-megapixel TrueDepth sensor.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max is behind the Huawei P60 Pro, which comes with a 48-megapixel primary sensor with optical image stabilisation (OIS), a 13-megapixel ultra-wide camera, and another 48-megapixel telephoto camera with 3.5x optical zoom and up to 100x digital zoom. The rear camera units are accompanied by an LED flash and a 13-megapixel front camera sensor.

Sporting a 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display, the iPhone 15 Pro Max is equipped with Apple’s Ceramic Shield material. It is powered by a 3nm chipset, the A17 Pro, and features an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance. The phone claims to offer a battery life of up to 29 hours, similar to the preceding iPhone 14 Pro Max. It starts in India at Rs. 1,59,900 for the base 256GB storage variant.

iPhone 15 Pro vs iPhone 14 Pro: iPhone Users Should Consider Using a Case After Watching This Drop Test Video

iPhone 15 Pro and last year’s iPhone 14 Pro have been pitted against each other in a new drop test that measures how durable Apple’s premium devices are. The drop test video shared by YouTuber Sam Kohl shows that the iPhone 14 Pro was able to better withstand the drop test than the latest iPhone 15 Pro. The latest iPhone’s black glass shattered at the fifth drop whereas the iPhone 14 Pro stayed almost in perfect condition until the final drop. This year’s iPhone 15 Pro has rounded titanium edges replacing its predecessor’s stainless steel material. Read on to find out how the iPhone 15 Pro and its predecessor performed in the drop tests.

AppleTrack’s Sam Kohl has released a 13-minute video on YouTube that covers drop tests in multiple rounds to rigorously examine how well the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro sustain drops from different heights. The YouTuber threw two phones from the waist height initially and they turned out alright without any notable scratches. The iPhone 15 Pro got cracks at the rear panel at the fifth drop and the rear camera panel started showing dings and scratches at level six. However, the iPhone 14 Pro did not take any damage even in the sixth drop.

The video highlights that rounded titanium edges cannot resist the shattering of the latest device. The back and edge of the iPhone 15 are seen as more prone to damage than that of the iPhone 14 Pro. It could be due to the fact that the iPhone 14 Pro has a stainless steel frame, whereas the new device comes with a new titanium covering.

Successive drops caused increasing degrees of damage to the back panel and edges of the iPhone 15 Pro. In fact, its bottom display malfunctioned and became unusable at the 13th drop when it was thrown from a height of about 15 feet. The iPhone 14 Pro held up well while being dropped on a concrete surface at this level with no visible cracks on the screen or rear glass.

At the end of the drop test, the entire rear camera module of the Phone 15 Pro shattered and got detached from the device’s body in the 14th drop. The iPhone 14 Pro, on the other hand, remained functional even though it cracked fully at the front and back. Even after multiple drops the camera was working fine on the iPhone 14 Pro without any mere cracks on the camera island and its display was responding perfectly to touch inputs. The YouTuber notes that the iPhone 14 Pro survived way better than the iPhone 15 Pro.

You can watch the drop-test video below:

However, a drop test cannot decide whether a device is durable or not. The iPhone 15 Pro is currently up for sale in India and another 40 countries across the globe. As the new device reaches more hands, users can analyse if the titanium construction is a better choice.

The iPhone 15 Pro’s price starts at Rs. 1,39,900 for the base 128GB storage model in India. It is currently up for sale in the country via Apple’s online store, Apple BKC, Saket, e-commerce websites, and official retail outlets.

iPhone 15 Pro Max Faces Production Challenges Amid ‘Robust Demand’ and Shipping Delays: Ming-Chi Kuo

iPhone 15 Pro Max — Apple’s top-of-the-line model launched at its ‘Wonderlust’ event last week — is seeing robust demand after preorders for the handset opened on September 15, according to TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. This year, the Pro Max model features a more advanced telephoto camera with improved optical zoom support. However, the analyst states that iPhone 15 Pro Max production challenges are “more pronounced” compared to other models, even as the deliveries for the top-of-the-line model have been delayed to November in some regions.

Kuo states in a Medium post that the demand for the new iPhone 15 Pro Max is “robust” and higher than the iPhone 14 Pro Max that was launched by the company last year. Unlike its larger sibling, the iPhone 15 Pro model demand is weaker than its predecessor and the analyst suggests that this is because more customers are interested in the iPhone 15 Pro Max this year.

Unlike the iPhone 15 Pro, the Cupertino company’s regular iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models are seeing demand that is “roughly on par” with the handsets launched by Apple last year, according to Kuo. This year, Apple introduced some notable changes to the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models, including the company’s Dynamic Island and a 48-megapixel primary camera that arrived with the iPhone 14 Pro models last year.

While the demand for Apple’s iPhone models typically causes some delay in deliveries every year, the analyst points out that the iPhone 15 Pro Max is facing lengthy delays this year. In some regions, including the US, the top-of-the-line model is expected to be delivered to some customers in November.

Kuo claims that the iPhone 15 Pro Max — which entered mass production later than the company’s other smartphones — is facing “more pronounced” production challenges compared to other models. Apple unveiled the iPhone 15 series of smartphones at its ‘Wonderlust’ launch event on September 12, and preorders for all four models began three days later. The handsets will go on sale in India and in global markets on September 22.

iPhone 15 Series Battery Capacities, Wattage Reportedly Revealed via Regulatory Database: Details

iPhone 15 series’ battery capacities and wattage details have reportedly been revealed thanks to a regulatory database. Apple does not publish details of the batteries in its smartphones, aside from battery backup — in hours. However, a new report reveals that the iPhone 15 Pro models are equipped with slightly larger batteries than last year’s models. It is worth noting that Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are equipped with a new 3nm A17 Pro chip, which is expected to offer better efficiency (and performance) compared to last year’s Pro models.

A MySmartPrice report states that the details of the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max batteries have been listed on a Chinese regulatory database. The publication did not reveal the name of the database, but includes details of both the capacity and wattage of all four models in the iPhone 15 series.

According to the report, the iPhone 15 is equipped with a 3,349mAh battery with a wattage of 12.981Wh. The regular iPhone 14 that was launched last year featured a 3,279mAh battery. The iPhone 15 Plus is equipped with a 4,383mAh battery with a wattage of 16.950Wh, slightly higher than the iPhone 14 Plus, which had a battery capacity of 4,235mAh.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 15 Pro reportedly packs a 3,274mAh battery with a wattage of 12.70Wh, slightly higher than the iPhone 14 Pro, which has a 3,200mAh unit. On the other hand, the top-of-the-line iPhone 15 Pro Max features a 4,422mAh battery with a wattage of 17.109Wh — this is slightly higher than its predecessor, the iPhone 14 Pro Max, which was equipped with a 4,323mAh battery.

Apple does not reveal the battery capacities of its smartphones, unlike other smartphone OEMs. Instead, it reveals the typical battery life offered by the smartphone. According to the company, the iPhone 15 Pro Max will offer the best battery life in the lineup — offering up to 29 hours of video playback. The iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 offer 25 hours, 23 hours, and 20 hours of battery life, respectively.

A recent report also revealed another specification that Apple typically keeps under wraps — the amount of RAM on its smartphones. Apple previously upgraded the available RAM on its smartphone from 4GB to 6GB when it launched the iPhone 13 Pro, and the company’s iPhone 15 Pro models are the first handsets to feature 8GB of RAM while the non-Pro models are equipped with 6GB of RAM, according to a report

China Flags Security Problems With New iPhone 15 Models, Restricts Use in Government Departments

China flagged security problems with iPhones while saying it isn’t barring purchases, the government’s first comments on the topic after news reports that authorities are moving to restrict the use of Apple products in sensitive departments and state-owned companies.

“We noticed that there have been many media reports about security incidents concerning Apple phones,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said Wednesday at a regular press briefing in Beijing, without elaborating.

China plans to expand a ban on the use of iPhones to a plethora of state-backed companies and agencies, Bloomberg News has reported, a sign of growing challenges for Apple in its biggest foreign market and global production base. Several agencies have begun instructing staff not to bring their iPhones to work.

“China has not issued laws and regulations to ban the purchase of Apple or foreign brands’ phones,” Mao said, adding that the government attaches “great importance” to security and that all companies operating in China need to abide by its laws and regulations.

Mao’s comments about security incidents were slightly different in the official English translation of the news briefing. That translation, delivered simultaneously onsite by the ministry, omitted the reference to media “reports.” Foreign affairs ministry briefings are typically rigorously controlled and spokespeople’s responses are usually scripted ahead of time.

The press conference came just hours after Apple unveiled its latest model of the marquee device, the iPhone 15. The company unveiled four new models, keeping pace with the past few generations: the iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max

If Beijing goes ahead with an iPhone ban, the unprecedented blockade will be the culmination of a yearslong effort to root out foreign technology used in sensitive environments, coinciding with Beijing’s effort to reduce its reliance on American software and circuitry.

It threatens to erode Apple’s position in a market that yields about a fifth of its revenue, and from where it makes the majority of the world’s iPhones through sprawling factories that employ millions of Chinese.
