iPhone 15 Series to Feature Thunderbolt, USB 4 Support for Faster Data Transmission Speeds: Report

iPhone 15 series — expected to debut in September at Apple’s next launch event — will reportedly be equipped with a new chip that will enable data transmission at a faster rate than existing iPhone models. The Cupertino company’s upcoming smartphones are likely to drop the proprietary Lightning port in favour of the widely used USB Type-C port. By switching to the modern connector, future iPhone models could offer not only faster charging rates but also rapid data transmission speeds.

Tipster “fix Apple” recently shared images of the charging connector (CC) flex cable for four smartphones — the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max. In another post on X (formerly known as Twitter) the account also shared the iPhone 15 series CC flex cable and the integrated circuit (IC) and power supply management chip. A new report now claims that the chip on the images for all handsets could improve the performance of the port compared to older models.

According to a ChargerLAB report, magnifying the images shared by the X user indicate the presence of an IC located behind the USB Type-C socket, which is a Retimer chip typically found on high-speed data transmission devices that support Thunderbolt and USB 4 for high-speed transfers. If the claims made in the report are accurate, all of Apple’s upcoming handsets could support data transfers at up to 40Gbps.

The rumoured Retimer chip might not be the only chip making its way to the iPhone 15 series — a recent report suggests that the company could equip the handsets with an Apple-made 3LD3 chip. According to the tipster, the device could use the chip for transmission encryption that could regulate charging speeds and enhance data transfers on the iPhone 15 lineup.

Apple hasn’t announced a launch date for the iPhone 15 series, but Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman states that the company could unveil the handsets on September 12 or September 13. A handset, believed to be the iPhone 15, was recently spotted on the BIS certification website, hinting at an imminent launch in the country. Meanwhile, Bloomberg recently reported that the Cupertino-based iPhone maker has started production of the iPhone 15 series in Tamil Nadu, ahead of its launch in the country.

iPhone 15 Series Reportedly Scheduled to Launch on September 13

Apple has a history of launching its new iPhone models in September and the iPhone 15 series could continue this practise. As per a latest report, the launch of iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will also take place in September. Last year, Apple held its ‘Far Out’ launch event on September 7 where it unveiled the iPhone 14 models. The Cupertino company has remained tight-lipped on the details of the new iPhone 15 series. However, several leaks and rumours have suggested possible specifications and pricing for the handsets. The vanilla models are expected to run on Apple’s A16 Bionic SoC, while the iPhone 15 Pro models are tipped to be powered by A17 Bionic SoC.

If this report by 9to5Mac is to be believed, Apple will hold a launch event for iPhone 15 lineup on Wednesday, September 13. The report, citing multiple sources, states that mobile carriers have been requested to ask employees not to take days off on September 13 due to a major smartphone announcement. As Apple consistently holds its fall launch event during September, we can expect the company to stick to this timeline.

Last year, iPhone 14 series was unveiled during Apple’s September ‘Far Out’ event on September 7. The pre-orders for iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max began on September 9. If the company follows the same trend and the rumoured launch date is valid, pre-orders for iPhone 15 series can be expected to start from September 15 this year.

As of now, Apple has not shared the date for the event or details on the iPhone 15 models so this piece of information should be taken with a grain of salt.

Going by previous leaks, Apple is expected to pack a USB Type-C port on the iPhone 15 series. All new models are expected to come with Dynamic Island feature, which is currently limited to the iPhone 14 Pro models. The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models are rumoured to feature the new Apple A17 Bionic chip. Meanwhile, the regular iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 Plus could feature the Apple A16 Bionic chip that powers the iPhone 14 series.

iPhone 15 Pro to Feature Titanium Edges, Apple’s New 3nm Chip, and Repair-Friendly Internals: Mark Gurman

iPhone 15 series — comprising the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max — are expected to make their debut this year. Apple’s next generation of iPhone models are likely to bring several hardware upgrades, according to details that have recently surfaced online. The iPhone 15 models are said to feature a USB Type-C port and upgraded rear cameras, while the Pro models might feature a new 3nm chip, titanium edges, improved zoom performance, and easily repairable internals, just like the iPhone 14 that was launched last year.

In the latest edition of his weekly Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman states that Apple’s upcoming iPhone 15 Pro will drop its easily identifiable stainless steel edges, replacing it with a sturdier material — titanium. This suggests the company’s next Pro models will be more durable than their predecessors. Meanwhile, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will feature reworked internals just like last year’s iPhone 14, to make it easier to repair, he adds.

On the inside, the iPhone 15 Pro will be powered by a new 3nm chip that will bring performance improvements over last year’s Pro models, according to Gurman, who says the new processor is “noticeably snappier”. However, customers who pick up the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will reportedly get the 4nm A16 Bionic chip found on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

This year, Apple will reduce the size of the bezels around its iPhone 15 Pro series of smartphones to 1.5mm, down from 2.2mm on the 14 Pro models, using a process called “low-injection pressure over-moulding”, according to Gurman. Meanwhile, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will drop the notch in favour of the Dynamic Island that featured on last year’s Pro models.

Previous reports suggest that the upcoming iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will feature an upgraded 48-megapixel primary camera instead of the 12-megapixel one on the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, and Gurman states that the largest model — the iPhone 15 Pro Max — will offer improved optical zoom. Apple’s next-generation iPhone 15 Pro Max is tipped to feature a periscope camera, a hardware feature that is present on high-end Android smartphones.

Gurman also reiterates his previous claim that the iPhone 15 series will drop the now-outdated — and slower — Lightning connector, in favour of a USB Type-C port. Apple is expected to bring this hardware change in order to comply with EU rules that go into effect in December 2024.

Meanwhile, Apple’s plans to improve the durability of the handset with the inclusion of solid-state buttons for the volume buttons, the power button, and the mute switch — codenamed Project Bongo — has been cancelled, according to Gurman, who says that only the mute switch will be replaced by an Action button.

Unlike last year, Apple is not expected to launch a new Apple Watch SE model this year, but the upcoming Watch Series 9 models and the second-generation Apple Watch Ultra will be equipped with a new — and powerful — S9 chip, according to Gurman. Apple is expected to announce plans to launch new smartphones and smartwatch models later this year.

iPhone 15 Pro Models to Get Low Energy Chip, Multi-Use Action Button Like Apple Watch Ultra: Reports

iPhone 15 series is said to release later this year, and the anticipated lineup is likely to consist of four models — the base iPhone 15, the iPhone 15 Plus, the iPhone 15 Pro, and the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which could reportedly launch as the ‘Ultra’ model this year. Although Apple is yet to officially announce any details of the upcoming series of flagship smartphones, there have been multiple leaks and reports about the forthcoming devices in the past few weeks. A couple of new reports suggest some key specifications about the Pro models of the series.

A MacRumours report suggests that both iPhone 15 Pro models, including the iPhone 15 Pro Max, will use new ultra-low energy microprocessors to enable certain features like the new capacitive solid-state buttons to continue to be functional even when the power is turned off.

This chipset is expected to replace Apple’s present super-low energy mode, which enables an iPhone to be located through Find My locator after it has been powered off and also allows Apple Pay Express Mode to be used for up to five hours after the battery has run out. It is also rumoured to take over existing Bluetooth LE/Ultra Wideband functions when the device power is off.

The rumoured chipset will “immediately sense capacitive button presses, holds, and even detect their own version of 3D Touch with the new volume up/down button, action button, and power button, while the phone is dead or powered down,” the report adds. Apple is reportedly currently testing the chipsets with and without Taptic Engine feedback.

The report adds that the unified volume button is expected to have one of two functionalities — one where the volume is adjusted depending on the amount of force used when pressed, and another where the volume is allowed to change by swiping up and down the button with a finger.

Another MacRumours report adds that the iPhone 15 Pro models will feature a customisable Action button like the Apple Watch Ultra. It will reportedly replace the Ring/Silent switch, but the report did not specify how it will be implemented. The potential functions that could be controlled by using this Action button include features like Ring/Silent, Do Not Disturb, Flashlight, Low Power Mode, Light/Dark Mode, Lock Rotation, Show the Home Screen, Show the Lock Screen, Open Control Center, Open Notification Center, Open Camera, Screenshot, Screen Recording, Run a Shortcut, Toggle on Reachability, Show the App Switcher, Show the App Library, Shazam, VoiceOver, Magnifier, and Background Sounds, according to the report.

It is worth noting that most of these features are accessible with a Back Tap action, a feature that was introduced with iOS 14.

iPhone 15 Lineup Could See More Difference Between Pro, Basic Models: Report

iPhone 14 series with four new models were launched at the ‘Far Out’ event in September this year. Apple introduced iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro as smaller models, while the iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 14 Pro Max debuted with larger screens. The early market trends reflected sluggish demand for the non-Pro models. Now, a new report suggests that Apple is “seriously” concerned about the sales performance of the iPhone 14 Plus and the Cupertino giant is looking to adopt new marketing strategies to make up for it during the release of the next iPhone series.

A new post by South Korean blog Naver suggests that Apple is “seriously” thinking about the sales performance of the iPhone 14 Plus and is considering new strategies for the upcoming iPhone 15 lineup. The decline in sales of the current non-pro models is reportedly far beyond the range predicted by Apple’s external environment.

Firstly, Apple could consider reducing the difference between the pro models and basic models. This is in line with the claim by analyst Ross Young that the Dynamic Island feature, which is currently available only on iPhone 14 Pro models could reach all iPhone models next year.

Apple is also considering changing the pricing strategy of upcoming iPhone models and the ‘price will be set differently than it is now’. It may reduce the price of the Plus model of the 2023 lineup. The iPhone 14 Plus price in India starts at Rs. 89,900. In contrast, the price of the iPhone 14 Pro Max starts at Rs. 1,39,900.

However, known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo earlier said that Apple will increase the gap between the Pro and non-Pro iPhone models further and offer exclusive features in the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Kuo stated that the company wants to increase the average selling price (ASP) of the iPhone units.

Further, the blog post states that the difference in material and camera parts between the pro model and the max will be definitive. This corroborates past leaks, that suggested a titanium chassis and periscope zoom camera on the iPhone 15 Pro Max model. The high-end models in iPhone 15 series are tipped to come with solid-state buttons instead of physical volume and power buttons.

Apple’s 2023 iPhone lineup is said to comprise the standard iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max models. The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are expected to be powered by Apple’s next-generation A17 Bionic chip. The non-Pro models could feature the A16 Bionic chip.
