iPhone 16 Pro May Get a Larger Camera Housing, Hinting at Bigger Sensors

iPhone 16 Pro may feature a larger camera module on the back compared to previous generations, according to a recent leak. Although Apple’s next-generation smartphone isn’t slated to launch until September, rumours have already started surfacing, hinting at its various aspects such as its design, features, colour options and more. A tipster now claims that the phone may ship with a bigger camera island, hinting at new sensors that might be on the way.

Bigger Cameras on iPhone 16 Pro

In an X post on May 28, the tipster known as MajinBu posted screenshots of an alleged iPhone 16 Pro case with visibly larger camera cutouts. “In the iPhone 16 Pro case the camera module is huge”, the tipster captioned the post. This allegedly means larger camera sensors are coming to the iPhone 16 Pro compared to its predecessor.

It is also reported that Apple may increase the display sizes for its Pro models. The iPhone 16 Pro is tipped to get a 0.2-inch increase, taking it from 6.1-inch to 6.3-inch. On the other hand, the iPhone 16 Pro Max is also reported to have a massive 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR display.

Previous reports have indicated that the iPhone 16 Pro could also get a larger sensor, offering 5X optical zoom, just like the Pro Max model.

iPhone 16 Pro Display Could be Brighter

Earlier this month, it was reported that the iPhone 16 Pro would not only get a bigger display but also one that is brighter, too. In a Weibo post (translated from Chinese), tipster Instant Digital had claimed that the iPhone 16 Pro would support up to 1,200 nits of typical brightness when playing SDR content. If true, it would mean a potential 20 percent increase over iPhone 15 Pro’s 1,000 nits limit.

On the other hand, the peak brightness could reportedly be 1,600 nits while playing HDR content, which suggests there would not be an upgrade over the current handsets.

iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Pro Display Production Said to Begin in June; iPhone 16 Pro Max Tipped to Get Upgraded Battery

iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro are expected to launch in the second half of 2024 and production of components for Apple’s next generation of smartphones is likely to start in the coming weeks, according to details shared by Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) CEO and Co-Founder Ross Young. Meanwhile, TF Securities International analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims that Apple will upgrade the top-of-the-line iPhone 16 Pro Max with a new battery that offers improved battery life compared to its predecessor.

Young states (via 9to5Mac) in a subscriber-only post on X (formerly Twitter) that Apple will soon begin production of displays for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models, as these are the two models with the highest projected volume. The analyst also said that the other two models in the series — the iPhone 16 Plus and iPhone 16 Pro Max are expected to take place at a later stage.

Meanwhile, Ming-Chi Kuo claims that the iPhone 16 Pro Max will be upgraded with a new battery with higher energy density than the current generation iPhone 15 Pro Max. If Apple decides to equip the handset with the same battery capacity as its 2023 flagship model, it could lead to improved battery life on the upcoming model. Kuo also states that the iPhone 16 Pro Max will be encased in stainless steel — Apple currently uses aluminium on its existing smartphones.

This year, Apple is expected to increase the size of two models in the iPhone 16 series. According to previous reports — and recently leaked dummy images — the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are expected to debut with 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays, respectively — an increase of 0.2 inches on both models compared to last year’s Pro and Pro Max models. The other two handsets are expected to arrive with the same display sizes as their predecessors.

The iPhone 16 Pro models are also tipped to arrive with an upgraded OLED screen that offers a 20 percent increase in peak brightness while displaying standard dynamic range (SDR) content. This means SDR content on the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max might be displayed at a peak brightness of 1,200nits, peak brightness for HDR content could remain unchanged at 1,600 nits.

iPhone 16 Series Leaked Images Reveal Display Sizes, Camera Alignment

iPhone 16 series could witness major reshuffling when it comes to design and display sizes. As per a new leak, the Pro models — the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max — could get larger displays, whereas the non-Pro models — the iPhone 16 and the iPhone 16 Plus — could feature a new camera alignment. These changes, if true, will break Apple’s three-year streak of introducing consistent design and display for its smartphones. Notably, the iPhone 16 series is also tipped to get capacitive buttons this year.

Tipster Sonny Dickson shared an image on X (formerly known as Twitter) showcasing the new design and display sizes. As per the images, the iPhone 16 Pro could get a 6.3-inch display as opposed to the 6.1-inch display on the iPhone 15 Pro. Similarly, the iPhone 16 Pro Max is tipped to feature a 6.9-inch display compared to a 6.7-inch display on its predecessor. The vanilla iPhone 16 is said to retain its 6.1-inch display, while the iPhone 16 Plus will get the same 6.7-inch display as its predecessor.

The display size upgrade, if true, will make some users happy, however, fans of smaller phones could be disappointed with the development. But the display size is not the only change revealed by the tipster. The camera alignment for the non-Pro models has also seen a change.

Instead of a diagonally aligned camera module like the iPhone 13, iPhone 14, and iPhone 15, the iPhone 16 and the iPhone 16 Plus could sport a vertically aligned module, similar to the iPhone 11 and iPhone 12. However, there is another change which differentiates it from any other iPhone model. The LED flash appears to be outside the module.

It is rumoured that the vertically aligned camera alignment is to add spatial video recording capabilities to the non-Pro iPhone 16 models. While not a lot is known, some other features of Apple’s next generation of iPhone have surfaced online. As per one report, the iPhone 16 series could get capacitive buttons which will replace the physical power button and volume rockers. These were first tipped to arrive in the iPhone 15 series, but later reportedly scrapped. The Action button which currently features on only the Pro models is also expected to be present on all the iPhone 16 models.

iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus Tipped to Arrive in Seven Colour Options, Two More than iPhone 15 Lineup

Apple’s iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are expected to debut later this year with a few design changes, such as a new vertically aligned camera layout and the Action button that arrived last year on the iPhone 15 Pro. A tipster now claims that Apple will introduce its next iPhone models in two additional colour options this year. An earlier report suggested that the iPhone 16 Pro models will swap two existing colourways on the iPhone 15 Pro models with new ones.

According to a post by tipster Fixed Focus Digital (translated from Chinese) on Weibo, the upcoming iPhone 16 Plus (as well as the regular iPhone 16) will be available in Black, Blue, Green, Pink, Purple, White, and Yellow colourways. The Purple and White options are new additions, while the others will be the same from the standard iPhone 15 models.

While five of the seven rumoured colour options are the same as the iPhone 15 models, Apple could still launch its upcoming handsets different shades. The current generation iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus colour options are more muted with a matte finish on the rear panel — especially the Blue variant — compared to their predecessors, while this year’s models might be more vibrant.

Earlier this year, it was reported that the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will be launched in new grey and gold finishes. These two are expected to replace two existing ones from the iPhone 15 Pro lineup — Apple only introduces its Pro models in four colourways every year. This year’s iPhone 16 Pro models could arrive in new Desert Titanium and Titanium Grey colourways.

The upcoming iPhone 16 series is likely to debut in the second half of 2024, based on Apple’s previous release timelines. Before these phones are unveiled, Apple is also expected to show off new software features coming to users as part of iOS 18, macOS 15, and other software updates at its upcoming WWDC 2024 event that begins on June 10.

iPhone 16 Series Schematics Tip Design, May Include iPhone 16 SE, iPhone 16 Plus SE Models

iPhone 16 series is expected to debut later this year like most iPhone releases, with leaks and rumours about the upcoming lineup already making the rounds on the Web. In a new update, the schematics, specifications and possible pricing of the iPhone 16 series have surfaced online. The image offers a brief look at the possible rear design of the upcoming handsets and suggests a major design overhaul with a vertical camera layout. The lineup is tipped to include iPhone 16 SE, iPhone 16 Plus SE, iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max models.

Schematics shared by tipster Majin Bu (@MajinBuOfficial) indicate that the iPhone 16 series will comprise five distinct models — iPhone 16 SE, iPhone 16 Plus SE, iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. This suggests the merger of the iPhone SE product line into the iPhone 16 portfolio.

The renders show a single pill-shaped rear camera layout for the iPhone 16 SE and iPhone 16 Plus SE with an offset flash., reminiscent of the iPhone X. The vanilla iPhone 16 is seen with a dual rear camera unit. In contrast, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are seen with triple rear camera setups. All three models appear to have a vertical camera arrangement with pill-shaped camera bumps seemingly corroborating previous leaks. The current iPhone 15 series features a square-shaped camera bump with horizontally placed sensors.

The tipster has also posted possible pricing of the iPhone 16 series as a comment on X. The iPhone 16 SE is tipped to cost $699 (roughly Rs. 58,000) for the 128GB version, while the iPhone 6 SE Plus could be priced at $799 (roughly Rs. 66,000) for the 256GB variant. The 256GB version of the vanilla iPhone 16 could come with a price tag of $699, while the 256GB variant of the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are said to be priced at $999 (roughly Rs. 83,000) and $1099 (roughly Rs. 91,000), respectively.

The iPhone 16 SE is said to feature a 6.1-inch display with a 90Hz refresh rate. The iPhone 16 Plus SE is likely to get a 6.7-inch display with 60Hz display. Both these models are said to get the Dynamic Island feature. The regular iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models are rumoured to get 6.3-inch screens with 120Hz refresh rate, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max is tipped to pack a larger 6.9-inch screen with 120Hz refresh rate.

The iPhone 16 series is expected to go official in September this year. Apple is anticipated to pack an A18 Pro Bionic chip based on a 3nm process on the Pro models, while the regular iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus could run on a toned-down version of the A17 Pro chip.

iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Pro Max Tipped to Pack Bigger Batteries Than Their Predecessors

iPhone 16 series, which is expected to include four models —iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, Phone 16 Pro, and Phone 16 Pro Max— could be unveiled sometime in the second half of this year. Unsurprisingly, loads of leaks and rumours have already started circulating online and we now get the first hints about the battery capacity of the upcoming iPhone 16 series. The batteries of the iPhone 16 Pro series could be large compared to the iPhone 15 series. The vanilla iPhone 16 is said to sport a 3,561mAh cell, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max is tipped to come with a 4,676mAh battery.

Tipster Majin Bu (@MajinBuOfficial) has posted the battery specifications of the iPhone 16 series on X. The iPhone 16‌ Pro models are said to be equipped with larger batteries than their predecessors. The ‌iPhone 16‌ Plus, in contrast, might see a downgrade in battery capacity compared to last year’s model, according to details that have surfaced online.

As per the leak, the iPhone 16 will carry a 3,561mAh battery and the iPhone 16 Plus could pack a 4,006mAh battery. The iPhone 16 Pro Max is tipped to feature a 4,676mAh battery. The battery details of the iPhone 16 Pro are not available at this moment. The top-end iPhone 16 Pro Max is said to see an internal redesign in the battery setup, using a rectangular shape instead of an L-shaped one.

Apple typically keeps its iPhone battery capacities under wraps, but the tipster claims that the iPhone 15 has a 3,349mAh battery unit and the iPhone 15 Plus has a 4,383mAh battery. The iPhone 15 Pro Max is said to be backed by a 4,422mAh battery. These are mostly in line with battery capacities revealed from previous teardown videos of the handsets.

The iPhone 15 series arrived with rechargeable lithium‑ion battery units. The battery of non-Pro models is claimed to offer up to 26 hours of video playback time on a single charge, while the battery unit of Pro models is said to deliver a maximum 29 hours of video playback time on a single charge. The regular iPhone 15 models are powered by the A16 Bionic chip that was unveiled in 2022. Meanwhile, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max run on Apple’s next-generation A17 Pro chip.

The price of the iPhone 15 in India starts at Rs. 79,900, while the iPhone 15 Plus starts at Rs. 89,900. The iPhone 15 Pro, on the other hand, is priced at Rs. 1,39,900 for the base 128GB storage model, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max starts at Rs. 1,59,900 for the base 256GB of storage variant.

Apple’s A18 Pro Leaked Benchmark Score Hints at Vastly Improved Single-Core Performance

Apple’s iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are expected to debut this year with a new A18 Pro chip under the hood, and the company’s purported mobile processor could bring notable performance upgrades over its predecessor — the A17 Pro — which powers the iPhone 15 Pro models, according to a leaked benchmark score. The A18 Pro could offer better single-core performance than Qualcomm’s purported Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chip, while the latter is tipped to offer better multi-core performance.

According to a post on X (formerly Twitter) by user Nguyen Phi Hung (@negativeonehero), Apple’s hexa-core A18 Pro chip scores 3,500 points on the single-core test and 8,200 on the multi-core test on Geekbench 6. In comparison, the current-generation iPhone 15 Pro Max with an A17 Pro chip scores 2,898 points and 7,201 points on the single-core and multi-core tests, respectively.

Meanwhile, benchmarks for the purported Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 — expected to succeed the recently unveiled Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip by the end of 2024 — recently leaked by the same user show the processor scoring 2,845 points in the single-core test and a whopping 10,628 points in the multi-core test.

As it stands, the A18 Pro could offer a 20.77 percent increase in single-core performance over its predecessor, while the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chip might leapfrog Apple’s chip in multi-core performance. In fact, the leaked A18 Pro single-core Geekbench 6 score is higher than that of the 16-inch MacBook Pro (3,230 points) released in late 2023 with an M3 chip.

However, it’s too early to call these benchmarks reliable — the iPhone 16 Pro models aren’t expected until Q3 2024, while flagship Android phones with the rumoured Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chip aren’t likely to debut until the last quarter. There’s also no way to verify if these benchmark scores are accurate, as they aren’t published on Geekbench’s website.

Until last year, Apple released two ‘Pro’ iPhone models with the latest mobile processor, while two models would be equipped with the chip from the previous year’s high-end iPhone. In 2023, Apple equipped the iPhone 15 models with a 4nm A16 Bionic processor, while the iPhone 15 Pro models came with the 3nm A17 Pro chip. It remains to be seen whether Apple releases the iPhone 16 models with a ‘Bionic’ processor while the Pro model gets the purported A18 Pro chip.

iPhone 16 Pro Max to Feature Larger, Improved Primary Camera Sensor, Tipster Claims

iPhone 16 Pro Max — Apple’s purported successor to the iPhone 15 Pro Max that was launched last year — could arrive with more powerful camera capabilities in the coming months, according to details shared by a tipster. The company’s top-of-the-line iPhone model is said to be equipped with an improved 48-megapixel primary camera sensor that is larger than the one used on the current (iPhone 15 Pro Max) and previous generation (iPhone 14 Pro Max) models, offering more advanced camera capabilities.

Tipster Digital Chat Station leaked details of the iPhone 16 Pro Max camera via a Weibo post (in Chinese) on Wednesday. The iPhone 16 Pro Max will be equipped with a 48-megapixel Sony IMX903 camera sensor with a customised design. It will feature a 14-bit analogue-to-digital converter (ADC) and a digital gain control (DGC) for improved camera performance, according to the tipster.

Apple equipped the iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max models with a 1/1.28-inch primary camera sensor, but this year’s top-of-the-line model could sport a new, larger 1/1.14-inch sensor. This means that the company’s purported flagship iPhone model for 2024 could capture better images in low light scenarios, while offering better dynamic range and bokeh capabilities.

Earlier this month, TF Securities International analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that the iPhone 16 Pro models would be equipped with an upgraded ultra-wide-angle camera, while the tetraprism telephoto camera setup from the iPhone 15 Pro Max will make its way to the smaller iPhone 16 Pro model later this year.

Based on these claims, it appears that the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will both feature two upgraded cameras. Meanwhile, Apple’s 2025 models — expected to debut as the iPhone 17 series — will be equipped with an upgraded selfie camera, from a 12-megapixel camera with a 5P lens to a 24-megapixel camera with a 6P lens, according to Kuo.

iPhone 16 Lineup Could All Feature an A18 Chip, iOS 18 Code Reportedly Suggests

Apple packed ‌an older A16 chip on the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models this year, while the top-of-the-range ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ and iPhone 15 Pro Max debuted with an all-new A17 Pro chip. Now, early leaks indicate that the Cupertino-based tech giant will use an A18 processor in all iPhone 16 models. Early development versions of the iOS 18 operating system reportedly include references to four new iPhone models with an A18 chip.

As per a report by Macrumors, early development versions of the iOS 18 operating system contain references to four new iPhone models. These models, believed to be the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max, are reportedly internally referenced as D47, D48, D93, and D94, respectively.

The codes from iOS 18 reportedly indicate that Apple will pack a new SoC – t8140 – Tahiti in the entire ‌iPhone 16‌ range. This codename is said to be associated with the A18 chip. This corroborates earlier rumours.

Apple’s recent iPhone 15 series and iPhone 14 series have used different chipsets for the non-Pro and Pro models. The company used older generation SoCs in its lower-priced iPhone units in 2023 and 2022. The ‌iPhone 15‌ runs on an older A16 Bionic chip from the iPhone 14 Pro, while the ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ models are powered by a new A17 Pro chip with an additional GPU core and increased clock speed.

If all four iPhone 16 models are to use an A18 chip in 2024, it won’t be the same one, as per the report. Apple is said to differentiate the chips used on iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models by using A18 and A18 Pro branding. Besides the A18 chip, the operating system reportedly has reference to Broadcom Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules.

The rumoured iPhone 16 series is expected to come with a dedicated button for taking videos. This mysterious button is expected to be called as “Capture Button”. The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models would feature the new Action Button, which is currently exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro models. The Pro variants are said to have larger displays than the iPhone 15 Pro models.

iPhone 16 Pro to Feature 120mm Tetraprism Camera From iPhone 15 Pro Max: Ming-Chi Kuo

iPhone 16 series is expected to arrive next year, but numerous leaks have already begun to surface online, giving us an idea of what to expect from Apple’s next flagship phones. Most recently, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reiterated his claim that both the iPhone 16 Pro and ‌iPhone 16‌ Pro Max will feature Apple’s tetraprism telephoto lens with improved zoom capabilities. This year the Cupertino giant included a new tetraprism lens system with the iPhone 15 Pro Max, enabling support for 5x optical zoom. The smaller ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌, on the other hand, supports 3x optical zoom.

TF International Securities analyst in a new blog post on Tuesday claimed that Apple would include a tetraprism camera in the iPhone 16 Pro next year. In the iPhone 15 lineup, Apple only equipped one model with a new telephoto lens with up to 5x optical zoom and a focal length of 120mm — the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The iPhone 15 Pro features a 12-megapixel telephoto camera that offers 3x zoom. This is in line with Kuo’s previous claims.

The addition of a tetraprism camera in the iPhone 16 Pro would lead to a 160 percent year-on-year growth for Apple’s smartphones, with the inclusion of the camera on both models in 2024, according to Kuo, who adds that lens manufacturer Largan is the exclusive supplier of quadruple reflex periscope camera lenses for the iPhone 15 Pro Max and the production yield was at only 40 percent. Kuo says that Largan has now significantly improved its yield rate to 70 percent or above.

Further, he states that Apple and Huawei are the two fastest-growing brands in global periscope camera smartphone shipments in 2024. Largan will be the primary supplier of periscope lenses for Apple and Huawei in 2024. Huawei’s P70, P70 Pro and P70 Art, which are expected to go into production in the first half of next year, will also feature periscope cameras.

Besides cameras, the iPhone 16 Pro models might bring display upgrades as well. As per a recent report, Apple could pack a 6.27-inch display on the iPhone 16 Pro and a 6.86-inch display on the iPhone 16 Pro Max. The Pro models could use 120Hz displays based on the low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) technology. The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models are said to maintain 6.12-inch and 6.69-inch displays with 60Hz refresh rate, respectively.
