Sony Xperia 1 VI Expected Launch Timeline Hinted; Could Debut Early Next Year

Sony Xperia 1 VI is reportedly in the works. The company’s next “One” series smartphone is likely to make its debut early next year. While the company is yet to reveal details of its upcoming phone, the handset’s few specifications and launch timeline have been tipped online. The phone is expected to arrive as the successor to Sony Xperia 1 V which was launched by the company this year in May. Sony Xperia 1 V sports a 6.5-inch OLED display with support for 21:9 CinemaWide 4K HDR and 120Hz refresh rate.

In a recent Reddit post, a user has hinted that the Japanese phone maker could launch its next One smartphone early next year at MWC 2024. The smartphone is said to compete with the Samsung Galaxy S24 series and Xiaomi 14 Pro. Additionally, the post also suggests that the purported handset could come equipped with a new larger telephoto sensor offering a 6x zoom camera. It is also likely to feature Sony’s Clear Image Zoom capabilities.

Furthermore, the rumoured Sony Xperia 1 VI is leaked to come in sustainable packaging which could use recycled materials. However, Sony has not revealed anything regarding the upcoming smartphone.

Sony Xperia 1 VI will succeed the Xperia 1 V. The latter debuted with a 6.5-inch OLED display with support for 21:9 CinemaWide 4K HDR, 120Hz refresh rate, and 240Hz touch sampling rate. The phone comes equipped with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC under the hood. The handset packs 12GB of RAM and 256GB of inbuilt storage.

For optics, the Sony Xperia 1 V ships with a triple rear camera setup headlined by a 52- 52-megapixel main camera with a 1/1.3.5” sensor with f/1.9 aperture, and Hybrid OIS/EIS support. There’s also a 12-megapixel ultra wide-angle camera with f/2.2 aperture and a 12-megapixel telephoto sensor with 3.5-5x optical zoom and 15.6X hybrid zoom. On the front, the phone houses a 12-megapixel selfie camera. It is backed by a 5,000mAh battery with 30W (USB PD) fast charging.

Spider-Man 2 Gameplay Details Open-World Experience With Fast Travel, Teases Over 65 Suits

Spider-Man 2 just got a new gameplay trailer at the PlayStation State of Play event, held late Thursday, dropping new details about its exploration, side quests, and new tech. Game director Bryan Intihar kicked things off by comparing its open-world experience to the 2018 prequel, noting how the map has nearly doubled in size, expanding past the East River to include the Queens and Brooklyn boroughs. To compensate for the distance, both Spider-Men — Peter Parker and Miles Morales — are equipped with deployable Web Wings that let them swiftly glide across the city. Indeed, these can be used in tandem with web-swinging by alternating between the two for increased momentum.

As previously reported, players can seamlessly switch between Spider-Men instantly — functionality enabled by the PS5’s SSD — regardless of how far they’re located in the open world. That loading speed extends into the fast travel system as well, with new districts unlocking based on how many side activities you complete in that zone. In Spider-Man 2, our heroes’ masks are equipped with new AR tech that reveals world activities through holographic icons on your field of view. Any nearby tasks and NPC requests can be tracked using the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man App, which pops up at the bottom-right corner of the screen. While most tasks can be completed by either Spider-Man — indicated by the tiny face icons on the phone screen — some are reserved for a ‘specific hero.’

For instance, Miles could be asked to make an appearance at the Brooklyn Visions Academy, his current place of learning, which seems to be explorable to an extent. Similarly, the football grounds of Midtown High, where we saw Peter hang out with Harry Osborn in an older trailer, will be available to explore — at least to some extent. Intihar explained that side quests will be largely represented through ‘visual cues’ such as airborne Talon drones that lead to Kraven the Hunter’s story and floating green symbols that point towards Mysterio’s presence. Such interactions would eventually lead to climactic showdowns with Spider-Man’s rogues gallery of villains, not limited to the bulky Venom.

Exploration also rewards you with new combat and gadget upgrades, in addition to unlocking new Spider suits. Intihar claims that this sequel will feature over 65 suits from comic books, movies, and some original designs. In total, they’ll add up to 200 when you consider the Suit Styles system that lets you unlock alternate colours for your selected outfit. Furthermore, if you purchase the Digital Deluxe Edition of Spider-Man 2, you’ll be granted 10 more exclusive suits — five for each Spidey — crafted in collaboration with artists from across different media. This edition is priced at Rs. 5,599/ $79.99.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 swings onto PS5 on October 20.

NieR Replicant, Civilization VI, and Unpacking lead PlayStation Plus Extra, Deluxe Games for September 2023

NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139… leads the pack of new titles coming to the PlayStation Plus Extra and Deluxe/ Premium catalogue, this month. Starting September 19, all higher-tier PS Plus members can delve into a post-apocalyptic realm where machines and androids are stuck in a proxy war, and follow a brother’s quest to cure his sister Yonah from a life-threatening disease. Fight back sickness-ridden monstrosities through a customisable blend of magic and swordplay, all the while accompanied by a talking book. NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139… will be available on the PS4. Another standout this month is Unpacking, a calm puzzle game where you pull possessions out of cardboard boxes and decorate homes — jumping in time and across houses to slowly unspool an intimate story. It’s out on PS4 and PS5.

If simulators are your forte, hop into the shoes of a theme park manager and build out the roller coasters of your dreams by letting your imagination run wild. Sculpt every ride piece-by-piece and reshape the land beneath to form terrains, water bodies to splash on, and floating islands to give visitors an unforgettable experience. You can bring your own ideas to the table, but when stuck, feel free to browse the Frontier Workshop to download other players’ assets as a jumping point. Planet Coaster: Console Edition will be out on the PS4 and PS5. Despite what the name suggests, This War of Mine is about civilians, the innocent souls who are caught amidst the crossfire, as they struggle with a lack of food, medicine, and hostile scavengers. During the day, one must maintain their safe space, while the nights are for heading out and collecting items for survival.

Those looking to kick back and soak in a great narrative affair can check out Tails Noir, where you play as an anthropomorphic raccoon detective and explore a dystopian Vancouver to solve a deeply personal case about self-reflection and transformation. In many ways, it’s fashioned like a CRPG, and so your dialogue choices shape your identity as you scurry about the pixelated districts, teeming with the downtrodden and desperate. Tails Noir will be free-to-play for PS Plus Extra and Premium members on September 19. Meanwhile, Call of the Sea throws you into the farthest reaches of the South Pacific, in search of your husband who went missing on an expedition. Upon arrival, you’re greeted with a stunning, nameless tropical island with clues of a lost civilisation and occult influences, all waiting to be unravelled.

Other notable additions include Sid Meier’s Civilization VI, which has you build full-blown empires through extensive research and go head-to-head with history’s most notorious leaders to emerge as the greatest known civilisation. Then there’s Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 2, where you head into the Middle East and eliminate a series of targets through extreme-range tactical sniping missions.

All these and more were unveiled on the PlayStation Blog and will be available exclusively to PS Plus Extra and Deluxe members in September (PS Plus Deluxe is called PS Plus Premium in select markets). Last month’s catalogue included Destiny 2: The Witch Queen DLC, Sea of Stars, and Lost Judgement to name just a few.

Here’s the complete list of free games available to PlayStation Plus Extra and Deluxe/ Premium subscribers, starting September 19.

The blog post also lists the PS Plus Classics catalogue for September, available exclusively to PS Plus Deluxe/ Premium members. This month brings Star Ocean First Departure R, Star Ocean: Till the End of Time, Star Ocean: The Last Hope remaster, and Dragon’s Crown Pro.

PlayStation Plus Deluxe subscription starts in India from Rs. 849 per month, whereas the Extra subscription begins at Rs. 749 per month.

PS5 to Receive Another Rs. 7,500 Discount From August 24 in India: All Details

Sony has planned yet another promotional sale for the PS5 in India, promising a discount of Rs. 7,500. The offer is only applicable on the 4K Bluray-equipped disc version of the console, and goes live Thursday, August 24, at select online and brick-and-mortar retailers. The sale is slated to run for nine days, going into September 2, and will cut the price down to Rs. 47,490. The drop is exactly the same as the July sale, so in case you missed that one, now would be a good time to snag a PS5. While supply shortages are certainly not an issue anymore, we’d suggest being a little prepared since flocks of gamers coming together to buy the console (online) could cause server loads.

This marks the second time Sony has offered a discount for the current-gen console since its price hike in November 2022, where the aforementioned disc version’s price went up by 10 percent. It is worth mentioning that neither the Digital version nor any game bundle variants are receiving any offer — unless a store decides to implement its own discount. As per a press release, when it comes to online retailers, the 15 percent discount will be live on Amazon India, Croma, Flipkart, Games the Shop, Reliance Digital, ShopatSC, Vijay Sales, and other ‘select retailers.’ Meanwhile, industry insider Rishi Alwani speculated that sales targets for the PS5 in India could be lagging far behind, hence a second sale has been offered within a one-month period.

He also added that back-to-back promotional offers in close proximity have got nothing to do with making room for the long-rumoured PS5 Slim or PS5 Pro consoles. Earlier this month, a leaked video showed a slightly slimmer version of the console, sporting a new cover, dual USB Type-C ports in the front, and a bulge on the side for what’s assumed to be space for a detachable disc drive. An Insider Gaming report from last year confirmed similar details about the newly revised console, which also lines up with Microsoft’s claims during its court battle against the US FTC, in early July. The Xbox parent company believes that Sony has got a less-expensive PS5 Slim model planned for release — costing $399.99 (about Rs. 33,093) — later this year. For now, it’s unclear what improvements the new console’s bringing with it, though if the leaked video is anything to go by, calling it ‘Slim’ is an exaggeration.

More recently, Sony began rolling out beta access to cloud streaming on the PS5, with select PS Plus Premium members being able to stream games at up to 4K resolution. Subscribers will be able to play a bunch of titles from the cloud without actually owning or downloading them on their console. For beta testing, players can choose between four main resolutions — 720p, 1080p, 1440p, and 2160p — and test a catalogue of 12 games, which includes God of War Ragnarök, Death Stranding, Demon’s Souls, Horizon Forbidden West, and more.

Zee-Sony Merger Approved by NCLT, Paving Way For Creation of $10 Billion Media Company

The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) on Thursday allowed the merger of Zee Entertainment Enterprises and Culver Max Entertainment (earlier known as Sony Pictures Networks India).

This order by the Mumbai bench, headed by H V Subba Rao and Madhu Sinha, will pave the way for the creation of a $10 billion (roughly Rs. 82,700 crore) media company, the biggest in the country.

The tribunal also dismissed all objections regarding the merger.

The NCLT, on July 11, had reserved its order on the merger after hearing objections from several creditors.

It heard arguments from creditors, including Axis Finance, JC Flower Asset Reconstruction, IDBI Bank, Imax and IDBI Trusteeship.

In December 2021, Zee Entertainment and Sony Pictures agreed to merge their businesses.

Both media houses approached the tribunal for sanctioning the merger after obtaining permissions from the National Stock Exchange, BSE and sectoral regulators such as the Competition Commission of India and the Securities and Exchange Board of India.

However, the process stopped at the tribunal when a few creditors raised objections. Several creditors of Essel Group raised objections against the non-compete clause added to the scheme.

NSE and BSE had informed the Mumbai bench of NCLT about two orders related to the Essel Group entities, where the promoters allegedly diverted funds from the listed entity for the benefit of their associate entities.

This also included the Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) order against Punit Goenka barring him from holding a directorial position in any listed company.

SAT upheld Sebi the Securities and Exchange Board of India’s (Sebi’s) interim order which restrained both Zee Entertainment promoters Subhash Chandra and Punit Goenka from holding board positions in public listed companies for a year on account of alleged fund diversion.

According to the creditors objecting to the merger, the order has a direct bearing as one of the integral parts of the scheme of the merger is the appointment of Goenka as the Managing Director of the merged entity.

As there is a regulatory bar on Goenka holding such positions, the merger shouldn’t go through, they submitted.

PS5 Cloud Streaming Beta Rolls Out to Select PS Plus Premium Members: 4K Support, Save Syncing

Sony has reportedly begun rolling out public beta access for cloud gaming on the PS5. As per ResetEra user ArashiGames, chosen PS Plus Premium members will be able to stream select games at up to 4K resolution. While the company confirmed the addition of cloud streaming in June, it’s only now that we’re learning about the supported resolution. That said, it’s unclear whether the maximum resolution refers to the in-game graphical fidelity or the streaming resolution, but a screenshot suggests that available resolutions are entirely dependent on the player’s internet connection. The core idea is that you can play games from the cloud without actually owning or downloading any of them.

For now, beta testers can choose between four main resolutions — 720p, 1080p, 1440p, and the aforementioned 2160p (4K), with Arashi claiming that cloud gaming automatically syncs with your game saves and the progression picks up from where you left off. Regardless, images will get compressed into a haze when being processed and delivered at high speeds across the internet. So, in the larger picture, it shouldn’t make a big difference if Ultra HD cloud streaming refers to the in-game render quality or the resolution it’s being streamed at. This serves as another incentive for players to sign up for a PS Plus Premium/ Deluxe subscription, which will in time, keep adding games to the platform.

Sony previously described the cloud streaming catalogue to include ‘supported PS5 games’ and now, thanks to Arashi, we know which ones they are. The catalogue includes 12 games, scattered between both first-party PlayStation titles that eventually made it to PC and some smaller third-party entries.

For comparison Xbox Cloud Gaming offers up to 1080p game streaming, running at 60fps — a feature that comes packaged with the higher-tier Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. In a sense, the upcoming PS5 cloud streaming service is a follow-up to the PlayStation Now service — suffering a rebrand after it got integrated into PlayStation’s revised plans. However, the aforementioned beta test is only for the PS5 and unlike PS Now, you can’t stream games onto a PC (the service itself isn’t available in India and several other countries). PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan also claimed, earlier this year, that Sony has ‘fairly interesting and aggressive plans’ for cloud gaming.

For now, it’s unclear whether Sony’s upcoming handheld Project Q will also support cloud streaming, though we already know that it will be limited to 1080p, remotely mirroring a PS5 system you own. It’s also worth noting that in April, the company reportedly tried hiring 22 roles related to cloud gaming technology.

Spider-Man 2 Story Trailer Breakdown: Venom Wants to ‘Heal the World’; New Limited-Edition PS5 Revealed

Spider-Man 2 just got a story trailer during the San Diego Comic-Con 2023 panel, dropping big hints about the future of our heroes Peter Parker and Miles Morales, as they head into conflict with two primary threats — Kraven the Hunter and the Symbiote Venom. During the Summer Game Fest event, held last month, co-creator Bryan Intihar confirmed that, unlike the comic books, Eddie Brock won’t be Venom in the game, promising a mystery twist for fans that now seems to point toward Harry Osborne. Developer Insomniac Games also revealed a new Spider-Man 2-themed limited edition PS5 bundle, where both the console and DualSense controller appear to be getting consumed by the blackness of the symbiote.

The trailer for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 opens with Peter and Harry Osborne sharing a heart to heart, as they muse about wanting to ‘heal the world.’ Coney Island has been confirmed to be a key location in the game, which is where Miles and Harry meet for the first time, with the former focused on being a better friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man. In the 10 months since Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Peter has gotten a new job — presumably as a waiter at a gourmet restaurant — in order to help with payments for Aunt May’s house, which he can’t sell due to sentimental value. Meanwhile, Miles needs to find time to write his college entrance essay, which he keeps procrastinating on to focus on being a better hero in Brooklyn, New York. “New job, huh? Still going to have time for tutoring,” Miles asks Peter.

Kraven’s hunters soon carve their way into New York City, mysteriously hunting down beast-like entities, stirring up enough of a commotion for The Daily Bugle to take notice. Peter is briefly seen giving tips to his love interest and reporter Mary Jane Watson, while a larger threat in the form of a black symbiote looms in the background, threatening the city. We’re also treated to scenes showing Miles’ plight, who feels himself separating from his mentor Peter and clashes with Martin Li/ Mister Negative, the man who killed his father, who is back in town. The Spider-Man 2 story trailer then cuts to show Peter succumbing to the symbiote, as it overtakes his body, granting him a slick black body-morphing suit and new tentacular abilities. Just like in the comic books, his personality takes a hit as well, straining his relationships with Miles, MJ, and Harry. He is rude and cocky and takes overtly violent measures when dispatching enemies.

“He’s not himself,” MJ tells Miles. “Go help him.” High-frequency sounds seem to work well against the symbiote, as we briefly see Peter and his black Spider-Man suit in distress upon hearing The Lizard/ Dr. Kurt Connors screeching. I’m assuming this encounter is how Peter rids himself of the invasion and possibly passes it on to someone else. In the next few scenes, we hear him getting into arguments with Harry, with the latter getting some words of encouragement from his father Norman, against a green backdrop where a symbiote sample is seen floating in liquid. In the post-credits scene for Spider-Man: Miles Morales, it was hinted that Harry would become Venom and that appears to have been carried over. Bear in mind, this could still be a very misleading trailer. “We’re going to heal the world,” Venom’s gruff voice utters, echoing Harry’s sentiments, as we see the bulky, monstrous being taking down an armed chopper and yelling with its pointy tongue hanging out.

It was previously confirmed that both Spider-Men — Peter and Miles — will be equipped with deployable Web Wings that help them glide around town. Players can also seamlessly switch between the two ‘across a variety of story moments.’

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Limited Edition Bundle pre-order details

As mentioned before, Sony is also releasing a limited edition PS5 bundle featuring a glossy red and black theme console, a controller to go along with, and a digital copy/ code of the game. Pre-orders go live on July 28, and if you already own a PS5, you can simply get the Spider-Man 2-themed console face plates and the DualSense controller separately. Players in the US, UK, France, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Austria, and Portugal can get this limited-edition design directly from direct.playstation.com, or at other select retailers.

The Spider-Man 2 Limited Edition Bundle will also be available around the world in ‘limited quantities’ at select retailers. Its official launch is set for September 1.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 swings onto PS5 on October 20.

Activision Blizzard, Microsoft Extend $69 Billion Deal Deadline to October 18

Activision Blizzard said on Wednesday it has extended the deadline for the close of its $69 billion (roughly Rs. 5,66,200 crore) takeover by Microsoft to October 18 as the companies work to secure approval from the United Kingdom’s antitrust authority.

The “Call of Duty” publisher said the companies also agreed to increase the deal termination fee to $3.5 billion (roughly Rs. 28,700 crore) from $3 billion (roughly Rs. 24,600 crore) if it does not close by August 29. The fee will further rise to $4.5 billion (roughly Rs. 36,900 crore) after September 15.

The two U.S. companies originally agreed to close the deal by July 18, but U.S. regulatory efforts to block the takeover and Britain’s push to restructure it have delayed the close.

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) bid to temporarily stop the deal was denied twice, first by a federal judge and then by an appeals court.

Britain’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) had earlier decided to block the deal, but reversed course last week and extended its deadline for a final ruling to August 29 after the U.S. court ruling left Britain alone in opposition.

Regulators in both countries have varying concerns over the deal.

The FTC said the deal could let Microsoft degrade Activision’s game quality or player experience on rival consoles like Nintendo and Sony Group’s PlayStation, as well as manipulate pricing or change terms or timing of access to Activision content.

The CMA questioned whether the deal could hinder competition in the cloud gaming industry, where users can play on any device using subscriptions such as the Xbox Game Pass that offer a wide selection of games.

Microsoft responded to these concerns by offering 10-year licensing deals to rivals after the deal closes. The latest was an agreement with Sony Group to keep “Call of Duty” on PlayStation, the biggest competitor to Microsoft’s Xbox.

Microsoft to Let Call of Duty Stay on PlayStation After Activision Blizzard Deal

Microsoft has signed an agreement to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation following the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer said in a tweet on Sunday.

A deal to keep Call of Duty on Playstation could further ease concerns surrounding the acquisition’s impact on competition.

Speaking on the agreement, Microsoft President Brad Smith said in a tweet, “Even after we cross the finish line for this deal’s approval, we will remain focused on ensuring that Call of Duty remains available on more platforms and for more consumers than ever before.”

The FTC had argued the deal would hurt consumers whether they played video games on consoles or had subscriptions because Microsoft would have an incentive to shut out rivals like Sony Group.

To address the FTC’s concerns, Microsoft had earlier agreed to license Call of Duty to rivals, including a 10-year contract with Nintendo, contingent on the merger closing.

Microsoft initially announced the Activision bid in January 2022. The internet giant wanted to take on rivals Tencent and Sony with the acquisition. Earlier, both companies signed a 10-year licensing deals that will bring Call of Duty to their gaming platform if the Activision deal is approved. However, Microsoft has now decided to let Call of Duty stay on PlayStation. In fact, Spain’s Nware has also signed a 10-year deal to bring Xbox and Activision Blizzard games to the Spanish cloud-gaming platform.

It is to be noted that Brazil, Chile, Serbia and Saudi Arabia have already given an unconditional approval to the deal.
