Resident Evil 4 Remake App Store Listing Goes Live, Priced at Premium Cost of Rs. 3,599

Listings for Resident Evil 4 remake’s iOS and iPadOS ports have gone live, showing a placeholder date of December 31. However, the mobile version is rather expensive, costing Rs. 3,599, matching the same default price tag as the mainline PC port. The game will be available with support for Universal Purchase, meaning the same app can be accessed across other Apple products you own, including the Mac. Similar to other Capcom titles, players will be granted a free trial/ demo before being asked to purchase the game for full content, hence it says ‘Free’ download on the App Store page.

Besides the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models, any Apple device housing an M1 chipset can run Resident Evil 4 remake, with Capcom promising ‘beautiful and detailed’ graphics on the Mac during their Tokyo Game Show segment. On the latter platform, the game is expected to weigh 19.3GB, while the phone version is around 700MB, which is likely to go up upon purchasing the complete version. I find it hard to imagine anyone wanting to play this acclaimed survival horror title on a mobile device at such a high price point, let alone having to deal with the abundance of translucent control buttons on the screen that make for an unsightly affair. The studio dropped raw screenshots from the iPhone port last week, and two-thirds of the screen is covered with buttons representing the PlayStation layout. Bear in mind that the images displayed on the App Store are largely from cinematics and do not represent actual gameplay.

As per Bloomberg, Capcom is looking to expand into new markets for ‘long-term growth,’ with India being a focus. The company believes that within the next 5–10 years, sales in the country will surpass that of China, but such claims are heavily misguided. For one, the majority of Indian gamers play on mobile devices, which while Capcom is willing to build upon as seen with the aforementioned Resident Evil 4, mobile players aren’t really willing to pay premium costs for such titles. Not to mention, the most commonly used mobile platform in India is Android. Secondly, the regional pricing system for Capcom’s games is on the higher end, often contributing to piracy — it doesn’t help that the average Indian gamer does not make premium game purchases. Rs. 3,599 isn’t a small ask for many.

At the Tokyo Game Show event, Capcom also confirmed that Resident Evil 4’s free Mercenaries mode and the newly launched ‘Separate Ways’ Ada DLC are in development. Furthermore, the studio confirmed that Resident Evil Village is coming to iPhone 15 Pro phones and the newer M1-and-above-equipped iPads on October 30, just in time for Halloween. Oddly enough, the game is priced $10 higher than the existing Mac version, costing $39.99 (about Rs. 3,330). This also indicates the lack of Universal Purchase — meaning, those who own Resident Evil Village on the Mac will be forced to purchase the mobile version should they wish to play it on the go. Pre-orders for the same will go live soon.

PS5 Cloud Streaming Beta Rolls Out to Select PS Plus Premium Members: 4K Support, Save Syncing

Sony has reportedly begun rolling out public beta access for cloud gaming on the PS5. As per ResetEra user ArashiGames, chosen PS Plus Premium members will be able to stream select games at up to 4K resolution. While the company confirmed the addition of cloud streaming in June, it’s only now that we’re learning about the supported resolution. That said, it’s unclear whether the maximum resolution refers to the in-game graphical fidelity or the streaming resolution, but a screenshot suggests that available resolutions are entirely dependent on the player’s internet connection. The core idea is that you can play games from the cloud without actually owning or downloading any of them.

For now, beta testers can choose between four main resolutions — 720p, 1080p, 1440p, and the aforementioned 2160p (4K), with Arashi claiming that cloud gaming automatically syncs with your game saves and the progression picks up from where you left off. Regardless, images will get compressed into a haze when being processed and delivered at high speeds across the internet. So, in the larger picture, it shouldn’t make a big difference if Ultra HD cloud streaming refers to the in-game render quality or the resolution it’s being streamed at. This serves as another incentive for players to sign up for a PS Plus Premium/ Deluxe subscription, which will in time, keep adding games to the platform.

Sony previously described the cloud streaming catalogue to include ‘supported PS5 games’ and now, thanks to Arashi, we know which ones they are. The catalogue includes 12 games, scattered between both first-party PlayStation titles that eventually made it to PC and some smaller third-party entries.

For comparison Xbox Cloud Gaming offers up to 1080p game streaming, running at 60fps — a feature that comes packaged with the higher-tier Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. In a sense, the upcoming PS5 cloud streaming service is a follow-up to the PlayStation Now service — suffering a rebrand after it got integrated into PlayStation’s revised plans. However, the aforementioned beta test is only for the PS5 and unlike PS Now, you can’t stream games onto a PC (the service itself isn’t available in India and several other countries). PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan also claimed, earlier this year, that Sony has ‘fairly interesting and aggressive plans’ for cloud gaming.

For now, it’s unclear whether Sony’s upcoming handheld Project Q will also support cloud streaming, though we already know that it will be limited to 1080p, remotely mirroring a PS5 system you own. It’s also worth noting that in April, the company reportedly tried hiring 22 roles related to cloud gaming technology.

Steam Summer Sale 2023 Best Deals: Dark Souls 3, God of War, FIFA 23, Cyberpunk 2077, and More

The 2023 Steam Summer Sale is now live, bringing new and returning discounts on PC games. The event is active for two weeks, running until July 13, 10:30pm IST, with a larger pool of discounted games than March’s sale event, going up to an 85 percent price hack. Bandai Namco is finally offering a discount on the Dark Souls trilogy, more than a year since it stalled price cuts on it, due to a crucial security vulnerability discovered in January 2022. However, the price reduction isn’t as steep as it used to be, with Dark Souls 3 costing Rs. 2,149, compared to the Rs. 1,047 price tag early last year. It’s still a massive drop from the base Rs. 4,299 price tag though, allowing newcomers enthralled by Elden Ring to check out more of FromSoftware’s catalogue. That award-winning open-world title is also on sale for Rs. 1,819 — a 30 percent price cut, and it’s also got an expansion planned for later.

Every PlayStation–PC port is also being offered on sale, save for The Last of Us Part I, which I imagine won’t see a discount until Naughty Dog fully fixes it. In my technical review of the game, I mentioned how it completely hogged down the CPU cores — even during idle — and had a range of performance issues such as framerate drops and uneven texture loading. You can instead opt for another father-child story in the God of War reboot, available at 40 percent off for Rs. 1,979. Both Spider-Man games, Remastered and Miles Morales, are listed at Rs. 2,679 and Rs. 2,210, respectively, though I feel like the latter should be even cheaper considering how short the overall game is. Another good pick would be Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, which puts both Uncharted 4 and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy in the same package for Rs. 1,979.

I’m quite surprised to see Star Wars Jedi: Survivor on sale this soon, having launched in April to rave reviews — all of which criticised its performance issues that led to the game struggling to run on high-end hardware. That explains the Mixed reception on Steam, and it’s priced at Rs. 2,624 at a 25 percent discount. In contrast, Resident Evil 4 — released in March — is not available on sale, though there are other quality Capcom titles you can pick. I’d recommend getting the Resident Evil 2 remake, where you step into the shoes of rookie cop Leon S. Kennedy, as he makes his way into the infected Raccoon City, ravaged by flesh-eating zombies. It is listed at Rs. 499 at a 75 percent discount. Or if you’re into high-octane hack-and-slash, get Devil May Cry 5 for Rs. 577.

If you’re into open-world titles, Red Dead Redemption 2 should be a no-brainer pick, which has received a 67 percent discount, taking the price down to Rs. 1,055. Or prime yourself for the Phantom Liberty DLC with the Blade Runner-esque Cyberpunk 2077, which I promise, is in a much better state than it was at launch in 2020. The base game costs Rs. 1,499 after a 50 percent discount, though you can also get a bundle worth Rs. 2,758, which also includes the upcoming expansion. On the shooter side, the latest Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II has received a 45 percent discount, now costing Rs. 2,749 for the base edition.

Resident Evil Village Gets Rid of Denuvo DRM on Steam

Capcom has quietly removed Denuvo DRM (digital rights management) protection from Resident Evil Village. As per a new report, the controversial anti-tampering tech was removed in the game’s latest update, and it’s no longer listed on its Steam store page. The technology – which is implemented to prevent piracy – is notorious for crippling game performance on PC. The issue was prevalent in Resident Evil Village as well, but Capcom decided to remove the DRM almost two years after its release. Pirates still managed to get the best of Capcom back in 2021, by releasing a cracked version which performed considerably better than the authentic copy.

“Capcom has also removed Denuvo from the game’s Steam store page. As such, we are certain that this removal was intentional, and not accidental,” a report by DSOG states. A Crytek leak from 2020 revealed that Denuvo charges game companies based on how long the software is being used in a title, with the highest fee being collected within the first six months.

The cost tends to rapidly go down over time, and most game titles eventually get rid of it — some within weeks, while others such as Resident Evil Village take years. Capcom has followed a similar strategy with its other titles such as Resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes, Devil May Cry 5, and Monster Hunter: World. It will be interesting to see how this DRM-free Resident Evil Village functions overall, given that many PC players had boycotted it due to performance issues.

More recently, Resident Evil Village received a virtual reality mode on the PS VR2 as a free DLC, allowing players to go through the entire game as they once again step into the shoes of protagonist Ethan Winters. It also comes with a dedicated VR tutorial and shooting ranges to master the new format. A demo version is also available to all PS VR2 owners.

Resident Evil 4 Remake Review

Capcom’s latest title Resident Evil 4 (2023) received its Mercenaries Mode free update on April 7, throwing special agent Leon S. Kennedy and other characters into wave-based enemy missions. However, the update also added a bunch of microtransactions to the game’s digital store. In Resident Evil 4, players must collect Spinels by completing missions and exchange them with the Merchant to collect tickets that help upgrade weapons. Now, players who are unwilling to go through that effort can simply pay for those tickets using real money. On Steam, the tickets start at Rs. 169 each, going up to Rs. 409 for a pack of three and Rs. 589 for a pack of five tickets.

Elsewhere, Lily Gao, the voice artist who gave life to Ada Wong in the Resident Evil 4 remake, hit back at the bitter comments she received in regard to her performance. “Being the first Asian actor to portray Ada in the Resident Evil video games is an honour, and I will forever be grateful to our producer and director, for making the decision on authentic representation,” Gao said in an Instagram post, which she previously deactivated in response to the harsh messages. “It’s unfortunate that with the game’s release, also came the all too familiar feeling of ‘I don’t belong’.” She further went on to criticise Asian stereotypes and how an inauthentic casting creates an unhealthy image.

“It is time we stop only capitalising on the sexualised, eroticised, and mysterious Asian woman, and make space to honour every kind of Asian woman,” Gao continued. “My Ada is a survivor. She is kind, just, intelligent, and funny. She is unpredictable, resilient, and absolutely not a stereotype.”

Resident Evil Village DLC: Winters’ Expansion With Third-Person Mode Launches October 28

Resident Evil Village DLC, Winters’ Expansion releases on October 28. Capcom dropped a trailer for the expansion, at the Tokyo Game Show, held Thursday, revealing the major additions coming to its newest survival-horror title. The DLC brings a third-person mode to Resident Evil Village, alongside a “Shadows of Rose“ story campaign and new characters and stages in the Mercenaries mode. Those who don’t own the main game can purchase the Resident Evil Village Gold Edition, a bundle comprising all the content, launching October 28, across PS5, PS4, Xbox Series S/X, Xbox One, and PC.

Resident Evil Village Winters’ Expansion – Third-person mode

The DLC’s first major feature is the highly-requested third-person mode, which as the name implies, shifts the camera to an over-the-shoulder perspective. Fans will be able to recognise this camera angle from the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 remakes, which brings some added shakiness during tense chase sequences. Ethan Winters can now be seen in action with new animations that weren’t present at launch. This includes the newly added kick and guard actions, which were added to the newer, first-person RE games. “–experience a new sense of fear from this fresh perspective,” says the video voiceover.

Resident Evil Village: Winters’ Expansion – Shadows of Rose

The Winters’ Expansion DLC brings a fully-playable Shadows of Rose side-story to the mix. Presented in a third-person perspective, the campaign follows Rosemary Winters — Ethan’s daughter — 16 years after the events of Resident Evil Village. Exploring the warped and twisted realm of the fungal root, Megamycete, Rose must conquer her fears and fend off incoming zombie-like foes.

However, even a single attack from these enemies is fatal, throwing healing herbs and other buffs out of the window. One bite — in this case, suction — is enough to get you killed. To balance the combat, Rose is equipped with an icy elemental attack, that lets her freeze enemies, causing them to slow down and creating opportunities for headshots.

Resident Evil Village Winters’ Expansion – Mercenaries

The final piece of content is “The Mercenaries Additional Orders.” Players will step into the shoes of Resident Evil Village’s antagonists, and wreak havoc on armed werewolves. The new expansion lets you play as Lady Dimitrescu and Lord Heisenberg, who wield unique abilities in battle. In the Winters’ Expansion trailer, the tall vampire lady can be seen applying lipstick, while mutant Heisenberg smokes a big cigar — adding to their character.

Furthermore, Capcom confirmed that Resident Evil Village will soon be playable on macOS, provided the system is equipped with an M1 or M2 chip. A Nintendo Switch version is also launching on October 28, albeit it is a cloud version, letting players stream the game onto their handheld devices. Internet connection will be required throughout playtime.

Resident Evil Village Winters’ Expansion and its Gold Edition bundle launches on October 28, on the PS5, PS4, Xbox Series S/X, Xbox One, and PC. On PC (Steam), the expansion is available for pre-order at Rs. 1,199.
