Gran Turismo Movie / TV Series in the Works at Sony, Neill Blomkamp in Talks to Direct: Report

Gran Turismo is reportedly being adapted into a movie or TV series by Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions. This project is said to be currently at a very early stage of development, and the plot of the adaptation is currently under wraps. The studios are hoping to rope in director Neill Blomkamp to be at the helm for this project. Blomkamp broke out onto the scene with the 2009 sci-fi action film District 9, before going on to make the Matt Damon-led 2013 dystopian sci-fi Elysium, and the 2015 dystopian sci-fi film Chappie.

Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions recently collaborated on the Uncharted movie adaptation that has grossed over $400 million (roughly Rs. 3,106 crore). Now, Deadline is reporting that the studios hope to repeat this financial success with a feature film based on the Gran Turismo games. However, there have been conflicting reports about the nature of this adaptation. A report by IGN claims that Sony is developing a Gran Turismo TV series instead of a movie. Could it be both?

Whatever the case may be, this franchise seems an unlikely choice as the Gran Turismo games don’t feature any plot. These games are revered for their highly-detailed graphics and precise driving physics. Created by Polyphony and Kazunori Yamauchi in 1997, the Gran Turismo series has reportedly sold over 85 million copies in total. The latest addition to the series, Gran Turismo 7, was released in March for the PS4 and PS5.

Gran Turismo 7 Review

Sony appears to be going big on video game adaptations. According to a report by Variety, a Horizon Zero Dawn series is heading for Netflix. It also mentions that Amazon Prime Video has landed a God of War series, which was reported in the past.

There is also a highly-anticipated The Last of Us series coming to HBO, which stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as Joel and Ellie, respectively. An Anthony Mackie and Stephanie Beatriz-starrer Twisted Metal series will soon debut on Peacock, NBCUniversal’s streaming service in the US. Furthermore, a movie based on Ghost of Tsushima is being directed by Chad Stahelski, who is renowned for the John Wick franchise.

PS Plus Subscription Stacking Now Unavailable Ahead of June Revamp

PlayStation Plus prepaid code redemption and new purchases have been disabled for existing subscribers, preventing users from “stacking” their subscriptions to the paid service for PlayStation owners. The move to block gamers with an active PS Plus subscription from adding on additional months comes ahead of Sony’s scheduled revamp of its PS Plus service in June. The Japanese company recently announced three subscription tiers — PS Plus Essential, PS Plus Extra, and PS Plus Deluxe — and revealed that gamers would be upgraded to an equivalent tier for the duration of their longest active membership.

Users on Twitter and gaming forum Resetera first reported the inability to stock up on their PlayStation Plus subscriptions, as spotted by Pushsquare. Users attempting to redeem repaid promo codes are shown an error code that states: “The pre-paid card could not be redeemed. Please try again later.”

According to the report, even purchasing a PS Plus subscription via the PS Store, on the browser and on the console, while already on an active membership shows users an error message that reads: “Can’t purchase. Can’t add to cart. You’ve already purchased this item.” Previously, gamers were able to purchase a subscription even if they already had an existing one, which would effectively be “stacked” over the existing subscription.

Gadgets 360 has independently verified that PS Plus subscriptions cannot be stacked. We received the same error as above.

Shop To, a retailer that has temporarily stopped selling PS Plus prepaid codes, responded to a customer stating codes will not be redeemable until mid-June while on an active subscription. Sony had disabled stacking subscriptions to stop players exploiting the carrying over of subscriptions, according to Pushsquare. Sony is yet to officially admit whether the stacking of subscriptions has been blocked until the new subscription service is introduced in June.

Announced in March, Sony’s revamped PS Plus subscription service will be launched first in Asian markets, followed by the Americas and Europe (including India). The PS Plus subscription will be available in three tiers — PS Plus Essential, PS Plus Extra, and PS Plus Deluxe. The highest tier offers cloud streaming access in select markets, where it’s known as PS Plus Premium.

Earlier this week, Sony also revealed pricing for the new PS Plus service in India. The lowest tier, PlayStation Plus Essential, will be priced the same as PS Plus today, starting at Rs. 449 a month. The middle tier, PlayStation Plus Extra is priced at Rs. 749 a month. Finally, the highest tier, PlayStation Plus Deluxe will cost gamers Rs. 849 a month. Quarterly and annual plans are also available.

The new PlayStation Plus is set to launch on June 22 in India.

Sony Informs Developers Must Release Free 2-Hour Game Trials for PlayStation Plus Deluxe: Report

Sony has reportedly told developers to create free timed trials of their games for its upcoming highest tier of the new subscription, PlayStation Plus Premium (PlayStation Plus Deluxe in India). These free trials are purportedly required to be at least two-hour long. This policy is expected to only apply to games that will have a wholesale cost of over $34 (roughly Rs. 2,600). Furthermore, developers are expected to release free game trials only for upcoming titles. Already released games and PlayStation VR titles are believed to be exempted from this new policy.

The report from Game Developer suggests that developers would be given up to three months to release these trials from the date of the launch of their game on the PlayStation Store. They would have to keep these free trials live for at least 12 months for PlayStation Plus Deluxe and Premium users. Sony is said to be even open to custom game demos. Developers are supposedly still allowed to release games for free weekends and other promotional offers outside the PlayStation Plus Deluxe / Premium tier.

Ethan Gack from Kotaku suggests that these free game trials could be developed by the PlayStation Store team, which might prevent relatively smaller studios from getting overburdened with extra work. Still, concerns remain over these timed trials negatively impacting game sales. Also, Sony is believed to be not offering any extra perks to developers for releasing these free trials.

The all-new PlayStation Plus gaming subscription service has been confirmed to arrive in India on June 22. This three-tier service is divided into the PS Plus Essential, PS Plus Extra, and PS Plus Deluxe in India. Globally, the regions that support cloud streaming will receive the slightly expensive PS Plus Premium as the top subscription tier, instead of PS Plus Deluxe.
