Sony Set to Miss PS5 Sales Target for FY 2023, Says Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Sold 10 Million Copies

Japan’s Sony slashed the full-year sales forecast for its PlayStation 5 console on Wednesday and said it plans to list its financial business next year as it focuses on entertainment and image sensors.

Sony cut its PS5 sales forecast for the year ending March to 21 million units, from 25 million units previously, after weaker-than-expected sales over the year-end shopping season.

The company said it expects a gradual decline in unit sales from the next financial year and that it does not plan to release any major franchise titles in the coming fiscal year.

Sony, which in 2023 said it was examining a partial spin-off of its financial business, said it plans to list Sony Financial Group in October 2025 and retain a stake of just under 20 percent.

The company’s operating profit in the October-December quarter jumped 10 percent to JPY 463.3 billion ($3.08 billion, or roughly Rs. 25,568 crore), beating an average estimate of JPY 428 billion (roughly Rs. 23,663 crore) from 11 analysts polled by LSEG, as strong performance by the financial, movies and music businesses offset weakness in games.

Known as the inventor of the Walkman, Sony has transformed from an electronics manufacturer into an entertainment and tech behemoth spanning movies, music, games and chips.

Sony sold 8.2 million PlayStation 5 units in the third quarter, which spans the year-end shopping period, compared with 7.1 million units a year earlier.

Operating profit at the games business fell by around a quarter, hit by higher losses from hardware due to promotions and lower sales of first-party titles.

“Sony tried hard with promotions, bundles and discount but the sales target was too ambitious from the get-go,” said Serkan Toto, founder of consultancy Kantan Games.

“In the end they will probably land closer to 22-23 million units,” Toto added.

Monthly active users on the PlayStation network, a measure of engagement with the platform, reached 123 million units at the end of the quarter from 107 million three months earlier.

Sony said it has sold 10 million copies of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which launched on October 20, with the company also rolling out a slim version of the console from November to boost sales.

Nintendo last week hiked its full-year Switch forecast to 15.5 million units, from 15 million units previously, as the Kyoto-based company extends the lifecycle of the aging console.

Xbox maker Microsoft is due to share updates on its games business on Thursday amid speculation the company will bring its titles to other platforms.

“If big third-party titles grow that will be a positive factor and we hope to utilise that momentum,” Sony President Hiroki Totoki told a news briefing.

Sony, a leading maker of image sensors for smartphones, said profit at its chips division rose 18 percent on higher sales.

TSMC said last week it will build a second fab in Japan in partnership with companies including Sony in a vote of confidence by the leading contract chipmaker in the country.

Last month Sony scrapped plans for a $10 billion (roughly Rs. 83,000 crore) merger of its Indian business with Zee Entertainment which would have created a TV juggernaut.

The Indian market has great growth potential on a long-term basis, Totoki said.

“If we can find another opportunity that would replace this type of plan we will actively look at that and we also need to reformulate our organic growth strategy,” Totoki said.

Sony’s shares closed down 0.5 percent ahead of earnings. They have gained 9 percent this year.

Wolverine Gameplay, Upcoming Insomniac Games Slate, More Leaked in Ransomware Hack

Wolverine PS5 gameplay footage and internal data of countless Insomniac Games employees have leaked online. The ransomware group Rhysida has followed through on its threat to release 1.67TB of confidential data, after publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) refused to meet their demands of paying 50BTC or $2 million within a week. The group also claims to have leaked 98 percent of the data, while the remaining two percent was sold to undisclosed sellers — it’s unclear what those files contain. Videos have begun circulating online, featuring raw gameplay accompanied by animated storyboards, concept art, locations, the general plot, and a targeted release window of 2026.

In addition to gameplay, the leak seemingly contains a bootable build of Wolverine, featuring the main menu and chapter selects titled ‘Vertical Slice,’ which I’m assuming is for presenting to investors and publishers. Cast details are also now available, detailing Spartacus star Liam McIntyre as Logan/ The Wolverine, acclaimed voice actor Troy Baker as Mister Sinister, and Debra Wilson as Callisto — the last of them also stars in WB Games’ Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League as Amanda Waller, whose plot details were also leaked earlier this week. Without going into detail, the in-game presentation is a departure from Insomniac’s Spider-Man games, with a tight over-the-shoulder camera that’s reminiscent of the God of War reboot. As previously reported, it’s set on the island of Madripoor and offers brutal combat bolstered by Logan’s adamantium claws, which can also be used to parry incoming attacks.

“Yes, we knew who we were attacking. We knew that developers making games like this would be an easy target,” a Rhysida spokesperson told CyberDaily, adding that the group was able to break into the domain administrator ‘within 20-25 minutes’. The files also contain emails among staff members and presentations listing upcoming unannounced games from Insomniac, which indicates an entire lineup of Marvel games that may or may not interconnect with each other. As it happens, Wolverine is the first of a planned trilogy of X-Men games, with the second and third entries planned for 2029 and 2033, respectively. There are a couple of new IPs in the works, alongside a new Spider-Man title, which we all saw coming, given how the ending was set up in the newly launched Spider-Man 2.

Last week, Insomniac Games delayed its Spider-Man 2 New Game+ update to early 2024, promising that the release will bring a host of new features to the mix, including mission replays, the ability to change the time of day in-game, and more. However, the leak revealed further free DLCs, promising new missions with villains like the Beetle and Carnage, and some crossover with Sony Pictures to include some Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse NPCs, villains, and the low-framerate comic-booky visual filter. Since the leak, developers have come together online to show support for Insomniac Games and denounce the hackers who were responsible for it. Even Rockstar Games fell victim to such an attack in 2022, which leaked in-development GTA VI footage, compromising the effort put into the game.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is out only on the PS5. There is no official release window yet for the upcoming Wolverine game.

Spider-Man 2 New Game Plus Update Delayed to Early 2024 With Promise of More Features

Spider-Man 2’s big post-launch update has been delayed to early 2024. In a tweet, developer Insomniac Games confirmed that the team needed more time to ensure a high-quality product, but will include a range of additional features. Originally, the patch was supposed to only include a New Game+ mode, allowing players to dive back into the game’s story in an overpowered state, carrying over all unlocked abilities and gear upgrades. But having collected feedback from players, a mission replay option will be added so that you can relive some of the most cinematic boss fights in gaming this year — alongside side missions to hunt down achievements.

“We know players have been eagerly awaiting features such as New Game+ and Audio Descriptions, among many more,” the tweet reads. “We have been working vigilantly on these features and require more testing to ensure the quality is up to our standards.” Players will soon be able to change the time of day in the city to best suit their web-swinging experience and even swap the colours on their tendrils when using the symbiote powers, which are black by default. When using other costumes, however, the symbiote Peter Parker’s webbing retains the colour white, rather than matching the theme of the suit he’s wearing, so the update should allow players to mix and match it as they like. Insomniac Games has got a lot more planned in the upcoming update, details of which will be shared in time.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Review

Earlier this week, the studio fell victim to a cybersecurity attack — hacked by a ransomware group that is looking to auction the ‘exclusive’ data at a starting bid of $2 million or 50 bitcoin. Publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) confirmed the original report, adding that the situation is being investigated and that no other divisions have been affected by the security breach. Rhysida is the hacking group claiming credit for the attack and as proof, published a bunch of Insomniac staff emails, some official documents of the employees, and what appears to be screenshots of the upcoming Wolverine game. A seven-day deadline has been self-imposed by the group, with the implication that the data will be released into the wild if they don’t receive an undisclosed payment on time. Video game companies are more frequently being targeted by such attacks, with the most notorious one being the Rockstar Games leak from last year, causing over 90 in-development GTA VI clips to leak online.

Both of Insomniac’s Marvel-centric games, Spider-Man and Wolverine, are set within the same universe — Earth-1048 — so there’s always a possibility of a cameo appearance from either lead character. Currently, there is no release window for the Wolverine game and the ending of Spider-Man 2 was clearly pointing towards a follow-up — whether that turns out to be a sequel or an expansion remains to be seen. Spider-Man 2 was also nominated in seven categories at The Game Awards 2023, including Game of the Year, but didn’t win a single trophy.

Spider-Man 2 is out now, only on the PS5.

Spider-Man 2 Will Add New Game Plus Mode Later This Year, Insomniac Confirms

Spider-Man 2 will receive a New Game+ mode as part of a post-launch update, later this year. As per Insomniac Games Community Director James Stevenson, just like the 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man, those looking to replay the title and mop up all the side quests might have to wait a bit, though for now, simply beating it once grants access to an ‘Ultimate’ difficulty setting for a fresh playthrough. For the uninitiated, a New Game + mode generally allows players to plunge back into a game’s campaign in an overpowered state, as the in-game character carries over all unlocked abilities, tools and weapons, and gear upgrades.

The ability to replay missions also isn’t available at launch, but replying to a fan on Twitter, Stevenson assured that such features will be included in the later patch. This would also be beneficial to those wanting to replay the biggest cinematic set pieces in Spider-Man 2, without having to complete an entire run first. Prior to launch, Insomniac Games highly recommended owners of the physical/ disc version of the game to download a version 1.001.002 patch before firing up the game. Spider-Man 2 is completely playable from start to finish via the gold master version on the disc, though the patch is poised to generally refine the game — particularly the opening sections — alongside bringing some new accessibility features, aimed at those suffering from visual, auditory, or motor challenges.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Review

An auto-heal feature is one such inclusion, completely refilling Spider-Man’s health if their focus bar is maxed out. There’s also some improved colour contrast for players to perfect their dodges. Of course, those who purchased it digitally won’t have to worry about it, as they would be automatically treated to the day-one version. For now, it’s unclear what Insomniac has got planned for Spider-Man 2, given the 2018 prequel introduced a chapter-based DLC collection called The City That Never Sleeps, as a means to introduce Black Cat into the story. The sequel blatantly leaves room to explore more stories, so this is very possible. Even God of War Ragnarök received some new content, in April, by way of armour sets with the New Game+.

Picking up 10 months after the events of Spider-Man: Miles Morales, this sequel reunites Peter Parker and Miles Morales, for a new threat involving the beast-like Kraven the Hunter, who’s on the prowl to take down any mutants residing in New York City. The monstrous symbiote Venom is in the picture too, albeit Insomniac confirmed early on that his true identity isn’t Eddie Brock, as we’ve learnt from the comic books. The open-world city has nearly doubled in size, with both Spider-Men — you can easily switch between the two — equipped with deployable Web Wings that let them glide around at high speeds. Fast travel is also improved, as Spider-Man 2 leverages the PS5’s SSD to ensure seamless loading across the game.

Spider-Man 2 is out now, exclusively on the PS5.

PS5 Slimmer Variant Will Reportedly Launch November 10 in the US, Spider-Man 2 Bundle Leaked

The release date for the slimmer and lighter mid-gen refresh of the PS5 has seemingly leaked online, alongside details about its first bundle. As per reliable tipster Billbil-kun — notorious for accurately leaking monthly PS Plus games ahead of time — the new PlayStation consoles with smaller form factor will go on sale November 10 in the US before spreading out to other regions; both disc and digital versions. A bit before that, on November 8, Sony would be bundling it with the newly launched Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 at $559.99, which is the same amount as the existing standard edition bundle. While not explicitly mentioned, the content should be the same, with a digital voucher for the game, alongside a themed controller.

Billbil-kun’s report — machine translated from French — claims that the Spider-Man 2 bundle will only include the disc version of the PS5 slim ‘without dedicated design,’ which is probably in reference to the special edition red-and-black PS5 where it appears as if the console is being consumed by Venom’s black symbiote. That said, it’s unclear whether he is simply referring to the detachable disc drive or the entire console side plate. Sony unveiled the new PS5 Slim, last week, billed as being 30 percent smaller than the base PlayStation 5, in addition to shedding 18 and 24 percent weight depending on the versions. It will be available next month and features a glossy top half and a matte bottom, separated by a streak of black. Just like the original launch, it will be available in two versions: Digital Edition and one equipped with a detachable Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive.

The drive also comes with a white plastic shroud that keeps it safe from dust and debris, and can simply be slotted on. The PS5 slim disc edition is priced at $499.99 (about Rs. 41,555), just like the original. The PS5 slim Digital Edition costs $449.99 (about Rs. 37,400) — up from $399 — albeit one could always buy the Blu-ray drive separately and just slot it in. The drive is sold seprately for $79.99 (about Rs. 6,650). On the hardware front, both consoles stay the same in terms of processing power and graphics, but there’s a minor upgrade to the internal storage, jumping from an 825GB SSD to a 1TB SSD. It’s worth mentioning that once Sony manages to sell its whole inventory of launch edition PS5s, this new slimmer variant will be the only one available to buy.

The report further notes that several Japanese sellers, including the regional Amazon site, have opened pre-orders/ bookings for the PS5 slim, with the aforementioned November 10 date. As of July, the Sony has sold 40 million PS5 units worldwide, with the company allegedly expecting to surpass that with refreshed console sales. In India, the current-gen standard PS5 disc edition is listed at Rs. 54,990, while the Digital Edition comes in at Rs. 44,990. Both editions are now readily available across both online and brick-and-mortar stores. In fact, it appears that its sales are lagging in the country, which would explain the frequent discounts we’ve been seeing recently. Sony also plans to launch the PlayStation Portal handheld gaming device, later this year, which lets players seamlessly stream their games from their console onto the smaller screen via Wi-Fi.

Spider-Man 2 Gameplay Details Open-World Experience With Fast Travel, Teases Over 65 Suits

Spider-Man 2 just got a new gameplay trailer at the PlayStation State of Play event, held late Thursday, dropping new details about its exploration, side quests, and new tech. Game director Bryan Intihar kicked things off by comparing its open-world experience to the 2018 prequel, noting how the map has nearly doubled in size, expanding past the East River to include the Queens and Brooklyn boroughs. To compensate for the distance, both Spider-Men — Peter Parker and Miles Morales — are equipped with deployable Web Wings that let them swiftly glide across the city. Indeed, these can be used in tandem with web-swinging by alternating between the two for increased momentum.

As previously reported, players can seamlessly switch between Spider-Men instantly — functionality enabled by the PS5’s SSD — regardless of how far they’re located in the open world. That loading speed extends into the fast travel system as well, with new districts unlocking based on how many side activities you complete in that zone. In Spider-Man 2, our heroes’ masks are equipped with new AR tech that reveals world activities through holographic icons on your field of view. Any nearby tasks and NPC requests can be tracked using the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man App, which pops up at the bottom-right corner of the screen. While most tasks can be completed by either Spider-Man — indicated by the tiny face icons on the phone screen — some are reserved for a ‘specific hero.’

For instance, Miles could be asked to make an appearance at the Brooklyn Visions Academy, his current place of learning, which seems to be explorable to an extent. Similarly, the football grounds of Midtown High, where we saw Peter hang out with Harry Osborn in an older trailer, will be available to explore — at least to some extent. Intihar explained that side quests will be largely represented through ‘visual cues’ such as airborne Talon drones that lead to Kraven the Hunter’s story and floating green symbols that point towards Mysterio’s presence. Such interactions would eventually lead to climactic showdowns with Spider-Man’s rogues gallery of villains, not limited to the bulky Venom.

Exploration also rewards you with new combat and gadget upgrades, in addition to unlocking new Spider suits. Intihar claims that this sequel will feature over 65 suits from comic books, movies, and some original designs. In total, they’ll add up to 200 when you consider the Suit Styles system that lets you unlock alternate colours for your selected outfit. Furthermore, if you purchase the Digital Deluxe Edition of Spider-Man 2, you’ll be granted 10 more exclusive suits — five for each Spidey — crafted in collaboration with artists from across different media. This edition is priced at Rs. 5,599/ $79.99.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 swings onto PS5 on October 20.

Spider-Man 2 Story Trailer Breakdown: Venom Wants to ‘Heal the World’; New Limited-Edition PS5 Revealed

Spider-Man 2 just got a story trailer during the San Diego Comic-Con 2023 panel, dropping big hints about the future of our heroes Peter Parker and Miles Morales, as they head into conflict with two primary threats — Kraven the Hunter and the Symbiote Venom. During the Summer Game Fest event, held last month, co-creator Bryan Intihar confirmed that, unlike the comic books, Eddie Brock won’t be Venom in the game, promising a mystery twist for fans that now seems to point toward Harry Osborne. Developer Insomniac Games also revealed a new Spider-Man 2-themed limited edition PS5 bundle, where both the console and DualSense controller appear to be getting consumed by the blackness of the symbiote.

The trailer for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 opens with Peter and Harry Osborne sharing a heart to heart, as they muse about wanting to ‘heal the world.’ Coney Island has been confirmed to be a key location in the game, which is where Miles and Harry meet for the first time, with the former focused on being a better friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man. In the 10 months since Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Peter has gotten a new job — presumably as a waiter at a gourmet restaurant — in order to help with payments for Aunt May’s house, which he can’t sell due to sentimental value. Meanwhile, Miles needs to find time to write his college entrance essay, which he keeps procrastinating on to focus on being a better hero in Brooklyn, New York. “New job, huh? Still going to have time for tutoring,” Miles asks Peter.

Kraven’s hunters soon carve their way into New York City, mysteriously hunting down beast-like entities, stirring up enough of a commotion for The Daily Bugle to take notice. Peter is briefly seen giving tips to his love interest and reporter Mary Jane Watson, while a larger threat in the form of a black symbiote looms in the background, threatening the city. We’re also treated to scenes showing Miles’ plight, who feels himself separating from his mentor Peter and clashes with Martin Li/ Mister Negative, the man who killed his father, who is back in town. The Spider-Man 2 story trailer then cuts to show Peter succumbing to the symbiote, as it overtakes his body, granting him a slick black body-morphing suit and new tentacular abilities. Just like in the comic books, his personality takes a hit as well, straining his relationships with Miles, MJ, and Harry. He is rude and cocky and takes overtly violent measures when dispatching enemies.

“He’s not himself,” MJ tells Miles. “Go help him.” High-frequency sounds seem to work well against the symbiote, as we briefly see Peter and his black Spider-Man suit in distress upon hearing The Lizard/ Dr. Kurt Connors screeching. I’m assuming this encounter is how Peter rids himself of the invasion and possibly passes it on to someone else. In the next few scenes, we hear him getting into arguments with Harry, with the latter getting some words of encouragement from his father Norman, against a green backdrop where a symbiote sample is seen floating in liquid. In the post-credits scene for Spider-Man: Miles Morales, it was hinted that Harry would become Venom and that appears to have been carried over. Bear in mind, this could still be a very misleading trailer. “We’re going to heal the world,” Venom’s gruff voice utters, echoing Harry’s sentiments, as we see the bulky, monstrous being taking down an armed chopper and yelling with its pointy tongue hanging out.

It was previously confirmed that both Spider-Men — Peter and Miles — will be equipped with deployable Web Wings that help them glide around town. Players can also seamlessly switch between the two ‘across a variety of story moments.’

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Limited Edition Bundle pre-order details

As mentioned before, Sony is also releasing a limited edition PS5 bundle featuring a glossy red and black theme console, a controller to go along with, and a digital copy/ code of the game. Pre-orders go live on July 28, and if you already own a PS5, you can simply get the Spider-Man 2-themed console face plates and the DualSense controller separately. Players in the US, UK, France, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Austria, and Portugal can get this limited-edition design directly from direct.playstation.com, or at other select retailers.

The Spider-Man 2 Limited Edition Bundle will also be available around the world in ‘limited quantities’ at select retailers. Its official launch is set for September 1.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 swings onto PS5 on October 20.

Spider-Man 2 Out Autumn 2023 on PS5, Insomniac Games Reveals

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the much-awaited sequel to 2018’s web-swinging open-world odyssey, will launch in the autumn of 2023. Going by the seasons for the Global North, Spider-Man 2 will drop between September and November 2023. Revealed in a post on the PlayStation Blog, the game will be exclusive to the PS5, promising a continuation of Peter Parker and Miles Morales’ arc, in the next blockbuster chapter. There isn’t much information on the game, but a PlayStation showcase from last year confirmed that the symbiote Venom will play a key antagonistic role. Tony Todd, who rose to prominence with the Candyman series of horror slasher films, voices the anti-hero.

“What a year it’s been for PlayStation Studios; here at Insomniac Games, we’ve been in absolute awe of the work of our peers,” creative director Bryan Intihar said in the blog post, which lists the biggest video game highlights for next year. “Congrats to everyone on a successful 2022… and here’s to next year being just as exciting as we continue to get Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 ready for release next fall.”

Last year, Ryan Schneider, Head of Franchise Strategy & Studio Relations, Insomniac Games, confirmed that “much of the development team” who worked on 2018’s Spider-Man is returning to produce the sequel, which includes the aforementioned Intihar and game director Ryan Smith. There’s the promise of new suits and villains trying to hunt down the web-crawling duo, as the game pushes the PS5 hardware to its limits.

The build-up to Spider-Man 2’s launch window announcement was nothing short of drama. The title was briefly available to wishlist on the UK storefront earlier this week, which hinted at an imminent announcment. The store page is now live worldwide, though. A little later, Jamie Mayer, one of the writers on the game revealed on her personal website — now, updated — that the sequel was aiming for a fall 2023 release slate. The window also aligns with the past two Spider-Man games, Spider-Man Remastered and Spider-Man: Miles Morales, both of which launched in November.

Spider-Man 2 won’t be the only title where the game’s Parker and Morales will show up. A new Spidey movie is set for 2023 in [Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse],(https://www.gadgets360.com/entertainment/spider-man-across-the-spider-verse-movie-108051), and a new trailer released earlier this week revealed a range of web crawlers from across multiple dimensions, including Insomniac’s versions. Currently, there’s no word on if they will have a prominent role to play, and if so, whether their game voice actors will reprise their roles.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is slated to release in Autumn 2023 on PS5.
