PS5 Cloud Streaming Beta Rolls Out to Select PS Plus Premium Members: 4K Support, Save Syncing

Sony has reportedly begun rolling out public beta access for cloud gaming on the PS5. As per ResetEra user ArashiGames, chosen PS Plus Premium members will be able to stream select games at up to 4K resolution. While the company confirmed the addition of cloud streaming in June, it’s only now that we’re learning about the supported resolution. That said, it’s unclear whether the maximum resolution refers to the in-game graphical fidelity or the streaming resolution, but a screenshot suggests that available resolutions are entirely dependent on the player’s internet connection. The core idea is that you can play games from the cloud without actually owning or downloading any of them.

For now, beta testers can choose between four main resolutions — 720p, 1080p, 1440p, and the aforementioned 2160p (4K), with Arashi claiming that cloud gaming automatically syncs with your game saves and the progression picks up from where you left off. Regardless, images will get compressed into a haze when being processed and delivered at high speeds across the internet. So, in the larger picture, it shouldn’t make a big difference if Ultra HD cloud streaming refers to the in-game render quality or the resolution it’s being streamed at. This serves as another incentive for players to sign up for a PS Plus Premium/ Deluxe subscription, which will in time, keep adding games to the platform.

Sony previously described the cloud streaming catalogue to include ‘supported PS5 games’ and now, thanks to Arashi, we know which ones they are. The catalogue includes 12 games, scattered between both first-party PlayStation titles that eventually made it to PC and some smaller third-party entries.

For comparison Xbox Cloud Gaming offers up to 1080p game streaming, running at 60fps — a feature that comes packaged with the higher-tier Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. In a sense, the upcoming PS5 cloud streaming service is a follow-up to the PlayStation Now service — suffering a rebrand after it got integrated into PlayStation’s revised plans. However, the aforementioned beta test is only for the PS5 and unlike PS Now, you can’t stream games onto a PC (the service itself isn’t available in India and several other countries). PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan also claimed, earlier this year, that Sony has ‘fairly interesting and aggressive plans’ for cloud gaming.

For now, it’s unclear whether Sony’s upcoming handheld Project Q will also support cloud streaming, though we already know that it will be limited to 1080p, remotely mirroring a PS5 system you own. It’s also worth noting that in April, the company reportedly tried hiring 22 roles related to cloud gaming technology.

Doom Eternal, Kena: Bridge of Spirits, and Wolfenstein: The Old Blood Lead PlayStation Plus Extra, Deluxe Games for April 2023

Doom Eternal leads the pack of new titles coming to the PlayStation Plus Extra and Deluxe/ Premium catalogue, this month. Starting April 18, all higher-tier PS Plus subscribers gain access to Bethesda’s demonic shooter, where you cycle between firearms, a flamethrower, a wrist-mounted blade, and more to lay waste to diabolical monsters, set against a fiery, hellish landscape. Doom Eternal will be available to play on both PS4 and PS5. The Pixar-like Kena: Bridge of Spirits is also included in the April catalogue, combining exploration in a cutesy fantasy world with fast-paced combat that has you fend off Corrupt Spirits.

PlayStation also mentions the acclaimed platformer Sackboy: A Big Adventure in the April Game Catalog, despite having previously added this as a monthly free title for all tiers of PS Plus members. If card games have never been your forte, Slay the Spire might change your mind. Bringing in the steep learning curve from roguelikes, the game has you craft a deck of unique cards to defeat the beasts thriving within and eventually make your way to the top of the spire. No run ever feels the same as the layout and the enemies are constantly shuffled around, alongside the relics you pick to boost your deck. Slay the Spire will be available to play on the PS4.

From the house of Bethesda, we’ve got two more entries this month — Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus and Wolfenstein: The Old Blood. In the former, you play as BJ Blazkowicz, aka Terror-Billy, a member of the Resistance dispatched on a mission to recruit the boldest resistance crew in a Nazi-controlled US. Armed with an arsenal and guns and guts for good measure, players can blast their way through every Nazi in sight, giving hope to the second American Revolution. Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, however, is a prequel, setting you against hulking Super Soldiers, shock troops, and various abominable war creations from the Nazis.

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood Review

Sports enthusiasts can delve into Riders Republic’s massive playground and partake in a range of activities such as bike racing, skiing, snowboarding, or gliding around in vibrant wingsuits. Compete in PvP races and dominate maps set across iconic American national parks such as the Bryce Canyon, Yosemite Valley, and more. Be ignorant all you want but fishing does count as a sport. It requires patience, utmost knowledge, and precision — all of which are key traits required to master Dovetail’s simulation game Bassmaster Fishing, as you compete against pro anglers to climb the ranks, earn sponsors, and eventually be crowned the champion. It will be available to play on both PS4 and PS5.

Shinji Mikami’s The Evil Within is an absolute classic, warping you into a perilous world teeming with disfigured nightmarish monsters, urging you to scavenge supplies and get the hell out of there as soon as possible. Use stealth to sneak past enemies and traps, while carefully planning out how you manage resources and progress through haunting levels. Mikami is also responsible for helming Resident Evil, so expect survival-horror elements in the same vein.

Resident Evil 4 Remake Review

All these and more were unveiled on the PlayStation Blog and will be available exclusively to PS Plus Extra and Deluxe members in April (PS Plus Deluxe is called PS Plus Premium in select markets). Here’s the complete list of free games available to PlayStation Plus Extra and Deluxe/ Premium subscribers, starting April 18.

The blog post also lists the PS Plus Classics catalogue for April, available exclusively to PS Plus Deluxe/ Premium members. This month brings a bunch of Bethesda classics — Doom, Doom II, Doom 64, Doom 3, and Dishonored: Definitive Edition.

Sony is also refreshing its PS Plus catalogue by removing a few games. Marvel’s Spider-Man, Resident Evil, and NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 will not be available on PS Plus after May 15. Not to mention, the PlayStation Plus Collection is shutting down on May 19, taking 19 first and third-party games away from PS5 owners. PlayStation has announced the monthly free games for April 2023 for PlayStation Plus subscribers. The three free titles, which will be available on PS Plus Essential, Extra, and Deluxe/ Premium tiers starting April 4 through May 1, include Meet Your Maker, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, and Tails of Iron. The month’s free games lineup from PlayStation is headlined by Meet Your Maker, a first-person building-and-raiding game arriving as a day 1 launch title to PS Plus. All three games can be added to both PS4 and PS5 game libraries till May 1. Users can continue playing the three titles as long as they are subscribed to PS Plus.

PlayStation confirmed its monthly free games for April on the PlayStation Blog, while also reminding PS Plus subscribers to add the monthly free games for March to their game libraries by April 3. This month’s PS Plus free games lineup includes multiplayer shooter Battlefield 2042, hack-and-slash dungeon crawler Minecraft Dungeons, and Souls-like action-RPG, Code Vein.

Meet Your Maker

Announced in August 2022, Meet Your Maker, is a first-person shooter that doubles as a building-and-raiding game. Developed by Behaviour Interactive, the game lets players build their own outpost and raid outposts built by other players, while navigating a labyrinth full of traps, obstacles, and enemies.

Meet Your Maker releases on April 4 and is arriving to PS Plus as a launch title. Played from a first-person perspective, the game features a host of firearms and explosives, with a melee weapon and a grappling hook as additional tools at your disposal. Think Super Mario Maker with more action elements thrown in. The game will be available to play on both PS4 and PS5.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure

Sumo Digital’s 2020 platformer, a spinoff of the popular LittleBigPlanet series, is also arriving to PS Plus in April. Sackboy: A Big Adventure is a 3D platformer that follows the trials of its titular character. The game features improved interactivity and movement mechanics that make Sackboy more manoeuvrable.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure is playable in up to four-player local and online multiplayer and will be available on both PS4 and PS5.

Tails of Iron

The third monthly free game coming to PS Plus in April is Tails of Iron, an action-RPG with Souls-like combat that released in 2021. Critically acclaimed at launch, the game features a unique hand-drawn art style that contrasts with its punishing combat. You play as Redgi, heir to the Rat Throne, on a quest to restore your fallen, war-plagued kingdom.

Redgi must take on the fearsome Frog Clan and their leader, Greenwart, with the aid of his companions. The game features robust crafting, including recipes and weapon and armour blueprints and help you on your brutal adventure.

Tails of Iron also arrives on both PS4 and PS5.

Earlier this month, PlayStation also announced the pack of games coming to its Game Catalogue, accessible to Plus Extra and Deluxe/ Premium tier subscribers, in March. Starting March 21, higher-tier PS Plus subscribers have access to Naughty Dog’s Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, indie launch title Tchia, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Extraction, Ghostwire: Tokyo, two Life is Strange titles, Immortals Fenyx Rising, and more.

PS Plus subscription in India starts at Rs. 499 per month for the Essential tier. The Extra tier of the subscription service costs Rs. 749 per month, while the top-tier Deluxe membership costs Rs. 849 per month. April’s three free games are included with all three tiers and are available till May 1.
