Google, Meta, Qualcomm Form Coalition for Open Digital Ecosystems in Light of New EU Tech Rules

Alphabet’s Google, Meta Platforms, Qualcomm and seven other tech companies on Wednesday teamed up to push for open digital ecosystems in response to new EU tech rules in a move that may also take the edge of possible future legislation.

Calling itself the Coalition for Open Digital Ecosystems (CODE), the group said it wants to promote more open platforms and systems to boost growth and innovation in Europe.

The group said it will work with academics, policymakers and companies on digital openness and how this can be achieved in Europe “through the implementation of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) and in future EU regulatory framework developments”.

The DMA requires gatekeepers — tech giants that control access to their platforms — to allow third parties to inter-operate with the gatekeeper’s own services and allow their business users to promote their offer and conclude contracts with their customers outside the gatekeeper’s platform.

“We have had a number of conversations in the past few months about what ‘good’ looks like when it comes to digital ecosystems in Europe, what fosters innovation, and what will positively impact competitiveness. We think openness is the crucial element,” Lynx founder Stan Larroque said in a statement.

Other members of the group are Chinese smart devices maker Honor, China’s Lenovo, French augmented reality start-up Lynx, US telecoms equipment maker Motorola, UK electronics maker Nothing, Norwegian tech company Opera and German messaging services provider Wire.

The Coalition said it aims to open up digital ecosystems through cross-industry collaboration and promote seamless connectivity and interoperable systems, among others.

Lenovo Legion Go Handheld Gaming Console Could Launch in India Next Year

The Lenovo Legion Go handheld gaming console was launched globally at IFA (Internationale FunkAusstellung Berlin) showcase event in September. Powered by the new AMD Ryzen Z1 series of processors, the Windows-based device is set to go on sale in EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa) markets this month. While there’s been no official word from Lenovo over a launch timeline for the Indian market, the Lenovo Legion India Instagram page seems to have hinted at a regional release window for the handheld. The Lenovo Legion Go handheld could release in India next year.

As per games industry insider Rishi Alwani, the Lenovo Legion India Instagram handle responded to a query about the handheld gaming device’s availability in India. Replying to X (formerly Twitter) user Shanthosh Somasunthar (@SSomasunthar)’s query about Lenovo Legion Go, the account said the device was expected to launch in India in March 2024. Alwani posted a screenshot of the interaction on X, providing some hint about a possible launch window for the console in the country. However, it’s worth noting that the Lenovo Legion India page referred to the device as “Lenovo Legion Go laptop,” which could either be a mistake or a misunderstanding.

As mentioned earlier, Lenovo has not announced the launch window or the pricing for the Legion Go handheld in India. The device is priced at EUR 799 (roughly Rs. 70,000) in EMEA markets and will be available in a Shadow Black colourway.

Gaming fans in India, however, can be hopeful. While handhelds are a niche in a growing gaming market in the country, popular products in the category like the Nintendo Switch and the Steam Deck remain sought after among dedicated fans. While Nintendo and Valve do not have an official presence in India, import models of the two handhelds are readily available via third-party sellers on e-commerce websites. In July, Asus officially launched the ROG Ally handheld gaming device in India. Priced at Rs. 69,990, the RC71L model of the Asus ROG Ally comes with an AMD Z1 Extreme processor, 16GB of RAM and 512GB of inbuilt storage, and a 7-inch LCD display. The handheld can be bought on the Asus e-shop or Flipkart, as well as the company’s Asus and ROG stores.

The Lenovo Legion Go comes with an 8.8-inch QHD+ display with up to 144Hz refresh rate. It runs on Windows 11 Home with Legion Space software on top. Powered by the new AMD Ryzen Z1 series of processors, the handheld packs up to 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to 1TB PCIe Gen 4 SSD. The available storage can be expanded up to 2TB further through a microSD card slot.

Moto G Power 5G (2024) Design Renders Leaked, Expected to Launch Soon

Moto G Power 5G (2024) may launch soon. The purported smartphone is expected to succeed the Moto G Power 5G (2023) , which was released in April 2023 with an octa-core MediaTek Dimensity 930 SoC and a 5,000mAh battery with 10W wired charging support. Now, a new leak from a tipster suggests the dimensions of the upcoming Moto G Power 5G phone. The tipster also shared design renders of the handset that, alongside a colour option, show the front and back panels.

A MySmartPrice report, in collaboration with tipster Steve H.McFly (@OnLeaks), has leaked the Moto G Power 5G (2024) renders and details. As per the report, the phone is in the works and may be released in the market soon. Although the site does not specify a launch date or a rough timeline, it can be expected sometime next year, as the name implies that it will be the 2024 model of the Moto G Power series.

The leaked images shared by the tipster show the Moto G Power 5G (2024) in a white colour option. It appears to be sharing its design language with the preceding model. Onee of the most notable differences the upcoming handset is expected to have with its older models is the rear camera unit. Even though the rectangular camera module on the top left corner of the back panel looks similar to that of the 2023 model, it is likely to feature only two camera sensors instead of three. Much like the older smartphone, however, the LED flash unit is seen housed within the camera module, next to the sensors.

The front camera of the Moto G Power 5G (2024) appears to be housed in a centre-aligned hole-punch slot at the top of the display. The phone is seen with slim bezels but with a relatively thicker chin. The volume rockers and the power button are both placed on the right edge of the phone, according to the leaked renders. The bottom edge is seen to house a speaker grille, a USB Type-C port, and a 3.5mm audio jack.

Moreover, the report adds that the Moto G Power 5G (2024) is likely to sport a 6.7-inch flat display. It also suggests that the handset is said to measure 167.3mm x 76.4mm x 8.5mm in size, which is bigger than the 2023 model that measures 163.06mm x 74.8mm x 8.45mm.

Dell, HP, Lenovo Among 32 Firms That Applied to Make Laptops in India, Says IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw

At least 32 international electronics companies have applied to India’s incentive programme to make laptops, tablets and servers in the country, a top minister said on Wednesday, weeks after the government announced restrictions on laptop imports.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government is pushing to boost domestic manufacturing capacity under its “Make in India” initiative, with several global companies either setting up their own units or entering joint ventures with Indian firms.

The applications by the electronics companies were made under the country’s $2 billion (roughly Rs. 16,500 crore) production-linked incentive (PLI) programme for information technology hardware, announced in May, Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said.

Earlier this month, India said it would impose a licensing requirement for imports of laptops, tablets and personal computers, which was widely seen as a move to boost local production.

The companies that have applied to make laptops and other products in India include Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Dell Technologies, Asus, Acer and Lenovo, said Vaishnaw, according to a video feed from ANI news agency, in which Reuters has a minority stake.

The PLI scheme for IT hardware is expected to bring Rs. 24.3 billion of incremental investment and is likely to generate 75,000 direct jobs, the minister said.

India will provide a transition period of about three months before a new licensing regime for imports of laptops, tablets, and personal computers comes into effect, the country’s trade regulator said on August 5.

This is a partial reversal from a surprise decision on Thursday to impose the licensing requirement with immediate effect, which had prompted calls for a delay.

“Import consignments can be cleared till October 31 without a license and a government permit would be required for clearance of import from November 1,” the government said in a notification.
