CMF by Nothing’s First Phone Could Be an Entry-Level Offering; Name, Specifications Suggested

Nothing’s sub-brand CMF seems to be gearing up to unveil its first smartphone. No details about the device are official at this moment, but a new leak suggests the name, price, and specifications of the handset. CMF by Nothing’s upcoming phone will reportedly be called the CMF Phone 1. It is said to feature a plastic body and could be offered in three colour options. The CMF Phone 1 is expected to be an affordable entry-level phone and could be cheaper than the Nothing Phone 2a.

As per a report by 91Mobiles, CMF’s new smartphone dubbed CMF Phone 1 could be priced at around Rs. 12,000 in India. This means the purported handset would be way cheaper than all currently available phones by Nothing. The latest Phone 2a, the company’s most affordable handset, is priced at Rs. 23,999. The Nothing Phone 2 was unveiled with a Rs. 44,999 price tag.

Like other entry-level phones available in the market, the CMF Phone 1 will reportedly have a plastic body. The front of the phone could have Gorilla Glass protection. It is said to be available in black, orange, and white shades.

CMF’s Phone 1 is expected to feature a 6.5-inch screen and could run on Nothing OS with limited features. CMF is anticipated to provide three years of operating system upgrades and four years of security updates for the phone. It is likely to run on a MediaTek Dimensity 5G chipset and get a single rear camera. It is expected to be backed by a 5,000mAh battery with 33W charging support.

The purported CMF Phone 1 was earlier spotted on the Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS) website with model number A015. However, CMF has not yet confirmed the moniker or its launch plans. Therefore it is recommended to consider the above details with a pinch of salt.

It ships with Android 14-based Nothing OS 2.5. The phone recently received the Nothing OS 2.5.5 update with new camera features, general improvements, bug fixes, and Google’s April security patch. Now, the Nothing OS 2.5.5a update is rolling out for Phone 2a users worldwide with ChatGPT integration and more new features.

In a post on X, Nothing confirmed that the Nothing OS 2.5.5a update is rolling out for Phone 2a users. One of the key elements in this changelog is the ChatGPT integration. To be able to access all features, they have to ensure that the latest version of the ChatGPT application is downloaded on their Phone 2a handsets from the Play Store.

After installing the Nothing OS 2.5.5a update, Phone 2a users will be able to access ChatGPT via their Nothing Ear or Nothing Ear A true wireless earphones. The Nothing X application has an option to customise a gesture to start a direct voice conversation with ChatGPT. The company noted that this feature will soon be available to other Nothing audio products as well.

The easy access to ChatGPT will allow Nothing Phone 2a users to utilise the AI chatbot almost as a virtual assistant. The Nothing OS 2.5.5a update for the Phone 2a also gets new ChatGPT widgets on the home screen. The upgrade also adds a button on the screenshot and clipboard pop-up which allows users to directly paste content from a file to a new conversation in ChatGPT.

Nothing OS 2.5.5a update for Phone 2a also brings better colour consistency in the primary wide-angle camera, improved portrait brightness in HDR scenes, and optimised camera app opening performance. An earlier issue with abnormal noise in portrait mode images is also claimed to be resolved with this update.

According to the changelog, the Nothing OS 2.5.5a update for Phone 2a has also resolved call stability and clarity-related issues, as well as problems with unlocking fluidity, and ease of swiping. It also incorporates an AI-backed algorithm for auto-brightness adjustments. The update has improved the visual display of battery levels in the Battery widget and optimised power-saving mode.

Notably, the Nothing Phone 2a was recently introduced in India in a third Blue colourway. The phone is available in 8GB + 128GB, 8GB + 256GB, and 12GB + 256GB configurations priced at Rs. 23,999, Rs. 25,999, and Rs. 27,999, respectively.

This works via the recently launched Nothing Ear and Nothing Ear A true wireless earphones, for now. The update also introduced a RAM Booster feature which can be set from Settings > System > RAM Booster.

Nothing Ear, Nothing Ear A New Renders Surface Online; Pricing Tipped

Nothing Ear and Nothing Ear A are confirmed to launch on April 18. Days ahead of the official debut, alleged renders of the truly wireless stereo (TWS) earphones have surfaced on the Web alongside their price points and specifications. The renders suggest a semi-transparent design for the upcoming earphones, similar to their predecessors. The Nothing Ear A are tipped to come with active noise cancellation (ANC) of up to 45dB and offer an IP54-rated build.

Known tipster Ishan Agarwal (@ishanagarwal24) has posted alleged renders, pricing, and specifications of Nothing Ear and Ear A on X. The images suggest a design identical to Nothing’s previous wireless earbuds. They appear to have a semi-transparent case and stem. The Nothing Ear A are shown in black, white, and yellow shades, while the Nothing Ear are shown in black and white colourways. The renders show “Nothing” engraved on the stem and they seem to have red and white dots to indicate the left and right sides, same as before.

As per the tipster, the Nothing Ear A will cost EUR 99 (roughly Rs. 8,000). They are said to offer up to 45dB ANC and dual connection. They might offer up to eight hours of battery life with ANC off and are said to get IP54 water resistance. The new leak corroborates previous reports.

On the other hand, the Nothing Ear are tipped to be priced at EUR 149 (roughly Rs. 13,000). The tipster believes that the earbuds will be priced below Rs. 9,999 in India.

Nothing will announce its Ear A and Ear TWS earphones on Thursday, April 18. The UK-based brand currently has three audio products in its portfolio — Nothing Ear 1, Ear 2, and the Ear Stick. With the upcoming earphones, Nothing decided to change their naming convention. The Nothing Ear earbuds are expected to pack considerable upgrades over the Ear 2. The latter are priced at Rs. 9,999 in India.

Nothing Ear, Nothing Ear A Confirmed to Launch on April 18 as Company Resets Naming Strategy

Nothing Ear and Nothing Ear A will be launched by the company next month, the UK startup led by OnePlus Co-Founder Carl Pei announced on Friday. The firm’s third generation of truly wireless stereo (TWS) audio products was previously expected to make its debut as the Nothing Ear 3, but the company announced that it was resetting its naming strategy for its products, starting with the successor to the Ear 2 TWS headset. Nothing will also launch a second audio product with an “a” suffix, similar to the Phone 2a.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, Nothing confirmed that it will launch two new products on April 18 — the Nothing Ear and Nothing Ear A. The Nothing Ear is expected to succeed the Nothing Ear 2 that was launched in 2023. It is currently unclear whether the Nothing Ear A will arrive as a cheaper version of the Nothing Ear.

It is interesting to see that Nothing is planning to release audio products with the alphabetical suffix — the company launched the Nothing Phone 2a, a mid-range smartphone that arrived months after the debut of the more expensive Phone 2 last year.

If the upcoming Nothing Ear A is launched as a cheaper version of the Nothing Ear, it could end up competing with Nothing’s own sub-brand CMF that also sells affordable TWS audio products that are priced between Rs. 2,499 and Rs. 3,499 in India. Alternatively, the company could launch the Nothing Ear around the Rs. 10,000 mark and the Ear A could be positioned around the Rs. 5,000 mark.

Nothing says that the decision to reset its naming strategy to exclude numbers was taken after the company reached a three-year milestone, adding that it wants to centre the focus around the product. We can speculate that subsequent models will include the year that the product was launched, in order to differentiate them from their predecessors.
