HP Partners With Google to Manufacture Chromebooks in India Starting Next Month

HP is collaborating with Google to manufacture Chromebooks in India to meet local requirements, the PC maker said on Thursday (September 28). The Chromebooks will be manufactured at the company’s Flex Facility near Chennai, Tamil Nadu. HP has been producing a range of laptops and desktops in this facility since 2020. Companies including Samsung, and Apple already meet a majority of the domestic demand through local manufacturing. As the Indian government is pushing to boost domestic manufacturing capacity under its “Make in India” initiative, several global technology players are either setting up their own units in the country or forming joint ventures with Indian firms.

PC and printing major HP via a press release announced that it is reaffirming its commitment to the government’s Make in India initiative by manufacturing Chromebooks in the county with Google. The Chromebooks will be produced at HP’s Flex Facility near Chennai starting October 2 to meet the local requirements. The company says the new partnership will propel a joint vision to support the digital education ecosystem in India by providing affordable computing devices to education authorities, schools, and institutions.

HP has been manufacturing a range of laptops and desktops in its Flex Facility since August 2020. The company started producing models like HP EliteBooks, HP ProBooks, and HP G8 series notebooks in the country in December 2021.

“HP is committed to advancing digital equity, and we have been driving many initiatives to enable digital education across India. Manufacturing Chromebook laptops in India will allow Indian students to get easy access to affordable PCs. By further expanding our manufacturing operations, we continue to support the Make in India initiative of the Government” said Vickram Bedi, Senior Director – Personal Systems, HP India.

“The local production of Chromebooks with HP marks an important step in our efforts to continue supporting the digital transformation of education in India,” said Bani Dhawan Google’s Head of Education – South Asia.

The Union Cabinet earlier in May approved a Rs. 17,000 crore incentive to boost local manufacturing of IT hardware like tablets and laptops in India and HP is one of the applicants under the latest production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme. Dell Technologies, Asus, Acer, and Lenovo have also applied to make laptops and other products in India

HP would be the latest global technology player to expand its production footprint in India. Apple has used the PLI programme to widen its supplier base in India, while Samsung is starting a new laptop manufacturing unit at its Greater Noida facility. Google is also looking for Pixel phone assemblers in the country

Apple Starts Selling Assembled in India iPhone 15 Models on Launch Day for First Time

iPhone 15 series including iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max hit the stores on Friday (September 22) in India and other countries. For the first time, the Cupertino-based company made the India-built iPhone 15 models available in the country and other parts of the world on the global sales debut day. Apple previously shipped made-in-India iPhone units later than the initial launch date. The new models could have been manufactured at Apple assembler Foxconn’s plant in Chennai. The latest iPhone lineup was introduced on September 12 during the “Wonderlust” event and they went on pre-order last Friday (September 15).

Apple started shipping the iPhone 15 series earlier today, and devices assembled in India are available to customers in the country on the first day of sale simultaneously with the China-made handsets. Multiple customers including celebrities like R Madhavan took to X to share a picture of their India-made iPhone 15 model. The units were said to be manufactured in Apple assembler Foxconn’s Chennai factory.

Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar said this is a milestone for the country. “Indians now accessing the latest products without waiting. We expect the iPhone 15 to be exported from India to the world soon. Congratulations, Team Apple”, he said on X.

In previous years, Apple shipped iPhone models manufactured in India later than the initial launch date. In 2022, the iPhone 14 models went on sale within 10 days of the global launch. The latest move by Apple is considered as a step towards diversifying the manufacturing capacity in India in light of the geopolitical tensions between the United States and China.

Apple is looking to turn India into a global hub for manufacturing its handsets. The company is now reportedly producing 7 percent of its iPhone models in the country. Apple’s India retail stores — Apple BKC store in Mumbai and the Apple Saket store in Delhi — opened doors for customers in April this year.

Apple is depending on Indian factories for the regular iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models. A recent report claimed that Apple will produce the iPhone 15 Plus locally at Foxconn’s plant in Chennai in the upcoming quarter. Foxconn’s Chennai factory employs 40,000 people. The iPhone assembling company is also investing $600 million (roughly Rs. 4,975 crore) for two projects in Karnataka to make casing components for iPhones and chip-making equipment. Other Apple suppliers like Pegatron and Wistron are also expected to soon assemble the iPhone 15.

Apple launched the iPhone 15 series during its ‘Wonderlust’ event last week. The latest handsets feature a USB Type-C port and have a titanium build. They all come with Dynamic Island and run iOS 17 out-of-the-box. The iPhone 15 models run on the A16 Bionic chip, whereas the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro are equipped with the A17 Pro chip.

Price of the iPhone 15 in India starts at Rs. 79,900 for the base model, while the iPhone 15 Plus starts at Rs. 89,900. The iPhone 15 Pro, on the other hand, has a starting price of Rs. 1,39,900, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max price begins at Rs. 1,59,900. They are currently up for sale through Apple’s online store, Apple BKC, Saket, e-commerce websites, and official retail outlets.

iPhone 15 Series to Go On Sale in India the Same Day or Few Days After Global Launch: Report

iPhone 15 series is expected to be launched on September 12 at an event called ‘Wonderlust’ that will take place at Apple Park in Cupertino, California. Starting at 10 AM local time, the event will also be live-streamed on apple.com and the Apple TV app. The iPhone 15 lineup is expected to consist of four models – iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Ahead of the launch, a report now suggests that the iPhone 15 models will go on sale in India on the same day or just a few days after the global availability of the phones.

To promote electronics production in India, the government has started providing a number of incentives to mobile, laptop, and semiconductor manufacturers. This not only contributes to the gross domestic production of the country, but also helps in the creation of multiple jobs within the production and distribution sector.

An Economic Times report suggests that the iPhone 15 models that are to be manufactured under the Make in India scheme, may be available in the market around the same time as the global release of the products. The units are said to be manufactured in Apple assembler Foxconn’s Chennai factory.

The report noted that last year with the launch of iPhone 14, the made-in-India units went on sale within 10 days of the global launch. This year the company expects an even lesser lag, if any and Apple will have the Chennai-based Foxconn manufacturing unit first serve the local Indian market and then be considered for export.

Notably, the government recently imposed restrictions on the import of several electronic items like laptops, tablets, and personal computers. The restrictions were to be effective immediately starting in the first week of August, but have now been pushed back by three months and clearance of import for certain electronic items will be required from November 1.

Dell, HP, Lenovo Among 32 Firms That Applied to Make Laptops in India, Says IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw

At least 32 international electronics companies have applied to India’s incentive programme to make laptops, tablets and servers in the country, a top minister said on Wednesday, weeks after the government announced restrictions on laptop imports.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government is pushing to boost domestic manufacturing capacity under its “Make in India” initiative, with several global companies either setting up their own units or entering joint ventures with Indian firms.

The applications by the electronics companies were made under the country’s $2 billion (roughly Rs. 16,500 crore) production-linked incentive (PLI) programme for information technology hardware, announced in May, Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said.

Earlier this month, India said it would impose a licensing requirement for imports of laptops, tablets and personal computers, which was widely seen as a move to boost local production.

The companies that have applied to make laptops and other products in India include Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Dell Technologies, Asus, Acer and Lenovo, said Vaishnaw, according to a video feed from ANI news agency, in which Reuters has a minority stake.

The PLI scheme for IT hardware is expected to bring Rs. 24.3 billion of incremental investment and is likely to generate 75,000 direct jobs, the minister said.

India will provide a transition period of about three months before a new licensing regime for imports of laptops, tablets, and personal computers comes into effect, the country’s trade regulator said on August 5.

This is a partial reversal from a surprise decision on Thursday to impose the licensing requirement with immediate effect, which had prompted calls for a delay.

“Import consignments can be cleared till October 31 without a license and a government permit would be required for clearance of import from November 1,” the government said in a notification.

India Second Largest Phone Maker With 2 Billion ‘Made in India’ Shipments Between 2014 and 2022: Counterpoint

India’s mobile phone manufacturing industry reportedly produced over 2 billion mobile phones cumulatively between 2014 and 2022, making it the second-largest mobile manufacturing country in the world. This growth can likely be attributed to a number of factors, including the government’s Make in India initiative, which has provided incentives for local manufacturing, and the increasing demand for mobile phones in India.

According to a report by Counterpoint Research, between 2014 and 2022, India’s mobile phone production grew at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 23 percent. ‘Made in India’ mobile phone shipments crossed 2 billion cumulative units over this period of time. In 2014, only 19 percent of domestic shipments were locally made, as compared to the 98 percent registered in 2022, the report said.

Increasing internal demands, followed by increasing digital literacy and government incentives to manufacturers are reportedly the major reasons for this growth. The report adds that initiatives like the Phased Manufacturing Program (PMP), Make in India, Production Linked Incentive (PLI), and Atma-Nirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) contributed to increasing local mobile phone manufacturing with perceivable results.

Counterpoint’s Research Director Tarun Pathak said that local value addition now stands at more than 15 percent, compared to the single digits in 2014. This has reportedly led to growing investments, increasing jobs, and overall ecosystem development.

Pathak added that the government intends to capitalise on this progress by aiming to make India a “semiconductor manufacturing and export hub.” He said that the country might see increasing semiconductor production, especially for smartphones, as India is attempting to bridge the urban-rural digital divide while also trying to become a mobile phone exporting powerhouse.

The report quoted Analyst Prachir Singh, who stated that the government is also focused on making India a semiconductor hub. It has proposed a semiconductor PLI scheme, which would provide financial incentives to companies that set up semiconductor manufacturing plants in India.

The government is reportedly also investing heavily in infrastructure with $1 trillion (roughly Rs. 83,21,600 crore) to further fuel these plans. These measures are expected to further boost mobile phone manufacturing in India and make it a global hub for semiconductor production.

Vedanta Chairman Says Their $5 Billion Made-in-India Chip Will Be Ready in 2.5 Years

Vedanta group chairman Anil Agarwal on Friday said that the first phase of its semiconductor project will involve a $5 billion (roughly Rs. 41,300 crore) investment of the overall $20-billion (roughly Rs. 1,64,500 crore) outlay, and the venture will be ready with made-in-India chip in two and a half years.

Vedanta is talking to three companies to rope them in as technology partners for its mega plans entailing foundry, chip manufacturing, and packaging and design.

“In 2.5 years, we will give you Vedanta made-in-India chips,” Agarwal told reporters on the sidelines of the SemiconIndia 2023 event.

The first phase of its semiconductor investment will be to the tune of $5 billion (roughly Rs. 41,300 crore), which is being structured.

“Vendata has a good cash flow, we will make a capital allocation in Vedanta and there is a queue of people to give us equity and debt…but we want the tie-ups to be in place first, and have an ecosystem,” he said.

After parting ways with Foxconn on their semiconductor joint venture, Vedanta group has made it clear that it remains committed to building India’s first semiconductor and display fabs in Dholera Special Investment Region in Gujarat, and substantial progress has happened to tie up with technology and equity partners in semiconductors.

Both Foxconn and Vedanta have now decided to apply for Indian chip-making incentives separately.

Foxconn has said it is working on plans to apply for incentives under the semiconductor and display fab programme, as the contract manufacturer pledged its commitment to India.

The Taiwanese electronics manufacturing giant said it has been actively reviewing the landscape for optimal partners.

India is wooing semiconductor and display manufacturers with a $10-billion (roughly Rs. 82,300 crore) incentive scheme, making a determined push to position itself as a global powerhouse for chip making.

Sophisticated chips are part of everyday life, used in mobile phones, refrigerators and cars to high-tech industries, and so fostering local industry with carefully-crafted schemes and policy sweeteners will link India to an ever-growing global chip market.

As it is, the global semiconductor shortage has emphasised the importance of this critical component in modern-day electronics.
