Apple Sees Rise in MacBook Air Demand Amid Decline in Q2 Global PC Shipments: Canalys

The decline in global personal computer shipments slowed in the second quarter, with Apple outperforming the market with a 51 percent jump thanks to strong demand for its recently launched 15-inch MacBook Air, data from research firm Canalys showed.

The report adds to early signs of a recovery in the industry, which has been banking on a new round of equipment upgrades by consumers and businesses to shake off its post-pandemic slump.

Canalys said the worldwide PC market declined by 12 percent in the second quarter of 2023, a much smaller fall than the over-30 percent drops seen in the previous two quarters, as it benefited from strong back-to-school demand.

“There are indications that many of the issues that have affected the sector are beginning to abate,” said Ishan Dutt, principal analyst at Canalys.

Apple grew the most among the major PC makers, with shipments hitting 6.8 million units and its market share expanding to 11 percent from 6.4 percent a year earlier, as supply-chain hurdles eased and it benefited from demand for the new MacBook Air.

Market leader Lenovo posted a shipment decline of 18.1 percent, smaller than the 30.3 percent fall posted in the previous quarter. HP and Dell also saw smaller falls, compared with the prior quarter.

“Inventory levels reduced further in Q2,” said Kieren Jessop, research analyst at Canalys. “All customer segments are set to improve sequentially for the remainder of 2023, amid a final push of inventory corrections and stronger seasonality in the latter half of the year.”

Still, Canalys said it expects 2023 shipments to be lower than 2022 as consumers prioritize spending on essentials in the face of high inflation and rising interest rates.

Government to Start Electronics Repair Pilot Project; Will Test Easing Rules to Lure Manufacturers

India will start a pilot project this week to establish itself as an electronics repair hub by relaxing cumbersome import-export rules, a move that could draw tech majors such as Flex to expand such operations in the country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promoted electronics manufacturing in India and attracted the likes of Apple and Xiaomi, but the country still lacks an industry for repair outsourcing which is estimated to be worth $100 billion (roughly Rs. 8.2 lakh crore) globally and currently dominated by China and Malaysia.

Following a push by an industry group for IT and electronics manufacturers, MAIT, the Indian government will test changes to lower the time required for necessary approvals for imports and exports to a day from as much as 10 days.

MAIT Director General Ali Akhtar Jafri said the government has agreed to ease the approval process for timely clearances with the tax authorities so that devices can easily enter India for repairs and then be shipped back quickly.

Bottlenecks in India also include an e-waste mandate that bans companies from locally disposing non-repairable products – adding to their logistics costs as they have to be sent back. The government will now allow recycling of 5 percent of imported goods domestically on a trial basis.

In the pilot phase, which will see participation from companies including Lenovo and Cisco, India will also permit re-export of the imported electronics goods to countries different from the original one – currently it is banned under foreign trade rules.

Flex, Lenovo and Cisco did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment. India’s IT ministry also did not immediately respond.

“Repair outsourcing will incentivise electronic manufacturers to further expand their production capabilities in India. This is a critical step towards ensuring resilience to supply chain shocks,” said Jafri, who estimated the repair industry in India to be worth $20 billion (roughly Rs. 1.6 lakh crore) in five years.

High repair costs in regions such as Europe and the United States are compelling companies to send goods overseas, Jafri said. He added that cheaper labour costs in India give it a total cost advantage of 57 percent over China and 26 percent over Malaysia – some of the biggest hubs for repairs at present.

Apple, Samsung Looking to Expand Production in India, Says MoS IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar

Apple and Samsung Electronics are among companies interested in increasing electronics production in India, a minister said, a boon for the country’s push to challenge neighboring China as a manufacturing hub.

The South Asian nation is seeking to expand its early success in smartphones to other product categories, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, India’s minister of state for technology, told Bloomberg TV’s Rishaad Salamat and Haslinda Amin on Friday. The country is launching a $2 billion (roughly Rs. 163 crore) plan to boost the local output of laptops, servers, tablets, and other electronics.

“We’ve had considerable success and tailwinds in the smartphone segment and we have increased interest from the likes of Apple and Samsung in expanding and growing here,” Chandrasekhar said. “We want to essentially replay that and add to that.”

India’s financial incentives for smartphone manufacturing have resulted in Apple and Samsung exporting billions of dollars of handsets from the country. The new IT hardware production-linked incentive plan has been drawn up for companies such as Dell Technologies, HP and Lenovo, Chandrasekhar said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government also wants to attract chip fabrication and chip packaging plants to India, he said. India is set to revive its effort to lure prospective chipmakers into the country as projects already disclosed, including billionaire Anil Agarwal’s $19 billion (nearly Rs. 1,55,330 crore) plan, are taking time to get off the ground, Bloomberg News reported this month.

A new report reveals that the model was spotted on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) website, cementing the idea of its imminent launch.

According to a MySmartPrice report, the Motorola Razr Plus 2023 device was spotted on the FCC website with the model number XT2321.
