iPhone 14 Specifications

The iPhone 14 gets a flat-edge aerospace-grade aluminium frame, with Ceramic Shield material on the front, and IP68 dust and water resistance rating — like the previous generation. The handset sports a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display which is said to be better in terms of brightness and colour reproduction as compared to last year’s handset. It is said to offer 1200nits peak brightness and support for Dolby Vision.

Under the hood, the iPhone 14 gets the last year’s Apple’s proprietary A15 Bionic SoC that powers the last year’s iPhone 13 series. Apple continues to offer the Face ID technology as the only biometric security option to unlock the phone.

Apple does not officially disclose the amounts of RAM and the battery capacities of each model, however, third-party teardowns in the coming weeks should be able to shed more light on this information. Apple says that the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Plus will be able to deliver more run time as compared to last year’s iPhone models.

As far as the camera is concerned, the iPhone 14 gets a 12-megapixel wide-angle camera that combines a 1.9um sensor and an f/1.7 aperture aperture lens. There is a 12-megapixel sensor paired with f/2.4 aperture ultra-wide angle lens with 120-degree field-of-view. Apple says there is new 12-megapixel front TrueDepth camera with f/1.9 aperture lens.

The company also highlighted a few camera trick up the handsets’ sleeve, which include improved video recording with a new stabilisation feature, called Action Mode. This mode uses the phone’s motion sensors to better correct video. The Cinematic mode is now available in 4K at 30fps and 4K at 24fps. Apple also touted the better low-light performance, thanks to the new Photonic Engine.

It is claimed to have improved low-light performance up to 2x on the ultra-wide camera, 2x on the TrueDepth front camera, and 2.5x on the main camera. It applies computational benefits of Deep Fusion in the imaging process. There is also an improved True Tone flash that is 10 percent brighter, Apple says.

iPhone 14 Plus Specifications

The iPhone 14 Plus features similar hardware to the iPhone 14 except the bigger screen size and battery backup. The handset gets 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display and Apple claims that the iPhone 14 Plus are said to have the best battery life ever in an iPhone. Under the hood is the A15 Bionic SoC that powers the vanilla iPhone 14 and the camera setup is also identical on both models.

iPhone 14 Pro Specifications

As far as the Pro models are concerned, Apple has used surgical-grade stainless steel that’s said to be abrasion and corrosion-resistant. The iPhone 14 Pro gets a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR Always-On OLED display with Apple’s ProMotion refresh rate feature. The Pro models can scale as low as 1Hz in order to provide a combination of smoother motion and power-efficient system.

The display also offers the highest outdoor peak brightness in a smartphone: up to 2,000 nits, which is twice as bright as iPhone 13 Pro. The iPhone 14 Pro comes with Ceramic Shield front cover which is touted to be tougher than any smartphone glass.

As mentioned, the major difference in display is the introduction of a pill-shaped hole-punch cutout in place of the famous trend-setting notch. Apple is calling it Dynamic Island, an “interactive space” that expands for notifications alongside other information such as music player, calling interface, Maps, among others. The company says that the feature works with third-party apps.

Under the hood is Apple’s new in-house A16 Bionic SoC which is said to be the most powerful chip in a smartphone. It has two high-performance cores and four high-efficiency cores. The new 6-core CPU is claimed to be up to 40 percent faster than the competition. The A16 Bionic SoC also features an accelerated 5-core GPU with a claimed 50 percent more memory bandwidth and a new 16-core Neural Engine capable of nearly 17 trillion operations per second, Apple says.

The company says thar the CPU, GPU, Neural Engine, and image signal processor work together to support the new camera hardware and perform up to 4 trillion operations per photo.

Now that we are talking about the camera, for photos and videos, Apple has gone a step ahead to refresh the camera hardware of the Pro models. There is a new 48-megapixel main camera with second-generation sensor-shift optical image stabilisation and a 12-megapixel telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom, f/2.8 aperture lens and optical image stabilisation. The third is a 12-megapixel sensor with f/2.2 aperture ultra-wide angle lens that has 120-degree field-of-view.

The quad-pixel sensor combines four pixels into one pixel for maximum light intake. It also enables a 2x Telephoto option and the new machine learning model allows the iPhone 14 Pro to shoot ProRAW. It also has Photonic Engine that is claimed to offer a better low-light performance — up to 2x on the main camera, up to 3x on the ultra wide camera, up to 2x on the telephoto camera, and up to 2x on the TrueDepth front camera that has 12-megapixel sensor and f/1.9 aperture lens.

iPhone 14 Pro Max Specifications

Equipped with nearly the same hardware as the iPhone 14 Pro, the iPhone 14 Pro Max is an option for those who prefer larger displays. The top-of-the-line handset gets a 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with the same Apple’s ProMotion refresh rate feature. It gets a triple rear camera and all new machine learning and photography mode as the iPhone 14 Pro.

Apple Launch Event Live Updates: iPhone 14 Lineup, Watch Series 8, AirPods Pro 2 Launch Expected Today

iPhone 14 launch event, dubbed ‘Far Out’, is set to begin at 10:30pm IST tonight. The Cupertino-based company is expected to unveil its next generation of iPhone models — comprising the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Meanwhile, the Apple Watch Series 8 is also expected to launch, and it is also said to include a new Apple Watch Pro model. Apple could also launch the AirPods Pro 2 at the event tonight. The company’s launch event will be livestreamed via YouTube and the Apple website, and you can also watch it in the player embedded at the top of this live blog.

While the iPhone 14 is not expected to come with noteworthy updates to its design, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models are tipped to swap the notch for a new “unified” hole punch and pill cutout. This would be the first major change to the iPhone’s display notch since it was introduced with the iPhone X in 2017.

The company is also expected to discontinue the “mini” model in favour of the iPhone 14 Max (or iPhone 14 Plus, according to recent leaks), which is said to be an iPhone 14 with the same display size as the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Apple’s previously launched the iPhone SE (2022) in March, equipped with the A15 Bionic chip, which is also expected to power the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max models.

Meanwhile, the Apple Watch Series 8 is likely to feature a similar design as last year’s Series 7 lineup, according to previous reports. However, this year’s models are tipped to feature a new low-power mode, while customers can expect to see a new health monitoring feature in the form of body and skin temperature monitoring.

Apple is also expected to launch a new Apple Watch Pro model, which is said to be a durable, rugged version of its smartwatch for active users, equipped with a titanium body. This model is tipped to feature a larger display than the others along with a new button.

Finally, Apple is also expected to launch a new model of its true wireless earphones, the AirPods Pro 2. Likely to succeed the AirPods Pro that made their debut in October 2019, the new earphones are said to feature a similar design, while offering improved active noise cancellation and audio quality. Previous reports also suggest that the earphones could offer support for MagSafe wireless charging and USB Type-C wired charging.

Like previous Apple events, we’re expecting the Far Out launch event to start with a keynote from Apple CEO Tim Cook. The company is most likely to announce the new iPhone series, followed by details of other new products. You can keep an eye out for the biggest updates on this page, as you watch the event with us via the player embedded above.

Apple Said to Challenge Brazil’s Move to Ban Sale of iPhone Models Without Battery Chargers

Apple reportedly said it would challenge the Brazilian court’s order which halted the sale of iPhone models without a battery charger in the country. Brazil’s Ministry of Justice and Public Security has earlier fined Apple BRL 12.275 million (roughly Rs. 18 crore) over the issue claiming that the company is providing an incomplete product to consumers. The order prohibits the sale of all iPhone 12 and 13 models in the country. The Cupertino giant stopped bundling chargers with its mobile phones in 2020 with the release of the iPhone 12, citing environmental concerns.

As per a report by Reuters, Apple would appeal the measure by Brazil to ban the sale of iPhone units without battery chargers. The company said that it would continue to work with Brazilian consumer protection agency Senacon to “resolve their concerns”.

The report quotes Apple as saying “we have already won several court rulings in Brazil on this matter and we are confident that our customers are aware of the various options for charging and connecting their devices”.

The Brazilian government earlier on Tuesday suspended the sales of iPhone 12 and newer models that do not ship with an included charger. It has slapped Apple with a fine of BRL 12.275 million and accused the company of “deliberate discriminatory practices against consumers.”

Apple discontinued the practice of bundling chargers with the launch of the iPhone 12 in 2020, citing it as a measure to reduce carbon emissions. The authorities rejected Apple’s argument, saying there is no evidence that selling smartphones without a charger offers environmental protections.

Brazil’s ban comes ahead of Apple’s Far Out event today, where it’s expected to announce the new iPhone 14 series with iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max models.

iPhone 14 Series Launch Date Said to be Targeted for September 7 Ahead of Busy Fall Product Season

Apple is aiming to hold a launch event on September 7 to unveil the iPhone 14 line, according to people with knowledge of the matter, rolling out the latest version of a product that generates more than half its sales. The new iPhones will kick off a busy fall product season, which will also include multiple new Macs, low-end and high-end iPads, and three Apple Watch models.

Apple is updating its flagship product at a precarious time for the industry. Smartphone sales have begun to flag as consumers cope with inflation and a shaky economy. But Apple appears to be faring better than its peers: The iPhone sold well last quarter, and the company has signaled to suppliers that it doesn’t foresee a dropoff in demand.

The Cupertino, California-based tech giant typically announces other products alongside the iPhone, including the latest Apple Watches. The company usually releases the new iPhone in stores about a week and a half after it’s unveiled, and Apple is expected to stick to that pattern this year. Some retail store employees have been told to prepare for a major new product release on Sept. 16.

Apple gained almost 1 percent to $174.54 (roughly Rs. 13,900) in New York trading. The stock remains down 2 percent this year, though it’s climbed back from a much deeper rout in recent months.

The company intends to stream the event online — rather than holding an in-person gathering — continuing an approach it adopted at the start of the pandemic. Apple launches are highly polished affairs, and employees have already begun recording the presentation’s segments over the past few weeks, Bloomberg News has reported.

An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment on the event’s timing. Given that the announcement is still about three weeks away, the company’s plans could change, but Apple usually unveils the latest iPhones in the first half of September.

The company held its last event in June to announce its next set of software updates — iOS 16, iPadOS 16, watchOS 9 and macOS Ventura — and invited press and developers to its campus to watch a video of the presentation. That arrangement was part of Apple’s slow shift back to more normal operations, a push that has included a return to the office.

On Monday, the company told its corporate staff they would be required to work in-person three days a week beginning September 5, two days before the planned product announcement.

The standard iPhone 14 will look similar to the iPhone 13, though the company will eliminate the 5.4-inch “mini” version and add a model with a 6.7-inch screen. This will mark the first time Apple launches a non-Pro iPhone with a display of that size.

The company is planning bigger changes for the iPhone 14 Pro line. Apple will replace the front-facing camera cutout, known as the notch, with a pill-shaped hole for Face ID sensors and a hole-punch-sized area for the camera. This will give users slightly more screen space. The company is also adding a faster chip to the iPhone 14 Pro. Apple, meanwhile, will retain the A15 chip from the iPhone 13 in the regular iPhone 14 models.

The most significant iPhone 14 Pro changes will be to the camera system, which will appear slightly larger to consumers. The Pro models will gain a 48-megapixel wide-angle camera alongside 12-megapixel ultrawide and telephoto sensors. Apple is also planning improvements to video recording and battery life.

For the latest Apple Watches, known as Series 8, Apple will add features for women’s health and a body-temperature sensor. The standard watch will look similar to the Series 7, but a new pro model will go after sportier consumers. It will have a larger display, rugged titanium case, new fitness tracking features and more battery life. The company also is planning a new Apple Watch SE, its low-cost smartwatch, with a faster chip.

Also coming in September: iOS 16, the software that will run on the next iPhones, and watchOS 9, the next Apple Watch operating system. And the company plans to launch macOS Ventura in October alongside iPadOS, the iPad’s operating system. The latter software was delayed about a month, in part due to bugs surrounding its new Stage Manager multitasking system.

Apple is working on an updated low-end iPad with an A14 chip and USB-C port, as well as new iPad Pro models with M2 chips for later this year, Bloomberg News has reported. It’s also looking to launch new Macs before the end of the year as it works on versions of the Mac mini and MacBook Pro with M2-based processors.

Apple Said to Hover Above Competition Even as Smartphone Market Stumbles

The global smartphone market may be tumbling, but the iPhone 13 continues to sell well, and Apple is expecting its upcoming iPhone 14 to do even better at launch.

Apple‘s slightly higher expectations for the forthcoming iPhone 14 underscore a growing belief among Wall Street analysts that the Cupertino-based company’s sales are likely to hold up better than the broader smartphone industry if major economies enter a recession.

Apple, which reports its fiscal third quarter earnings on July 28, conveyed its expectations to suppliers in initial forecasts as it carries out trial production of the iPhone 14, sources with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters.

With Apple sitting at the higher end of the market, analysts believe that inflation in core items like food and fuel have taken a lesser toll on its relatively affluent user base. That comes as industry watchers such as Fubon Securities Investment Services chairman Charles Hsiao believe demand for consumer electronics will slow overall this year and next.

An economic slowdown in China has already taken a huge bite out of the smartphone market, pulling global sales down 10 percent year over year to 96 million units in May, the most recent month for which full figures were available, according to Counterpoint Research. It’s only the second time in nearly a decade that the monthly figure has slipped below 100 million handsets, the firm said.

But two iPhone supply chain sources with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters that iPhone sales have continued to do well in July despite signs of cooling market demand for other smartphone makers.

“Others are starting to take a hit,” one of the sources said.

The second source said July shipments for the iPhone 13 from one factory were a third higher than July last year. That pattern was especially unusual because sales of current iPhone models tend to slow down in July and August as consumers await new models that Apple traditionally releases in September.

“Judging by shipment, sales of iPhone 13 are fairly good,” the second source said.

The iPhone has continued to sell well late into its cycle in part because “China demand rebounded sharply after lockdowns ended and the iPhone was a beneficiary” of a June shopping holiday in China, Cowen analyst Krish Sankar wrote in a note to clients.

In keeping with its annual schedule, Apple has started trial production of the iPhone 13’s successor with the goal of ramping up mass production in August so the devices can start shipping in the fall. The initial shipment forecasts Apple has given suppliers is “slightly higher” than that of iPhone 13 a year ago, the second source said.

“It’s slightly higher than last year. It’s good, but not explosively good,” the second source said.

For the just-ended fiscal third quarter, some Wall Street analysts are bracing for a slight decline in iPhone 13 shipments even if volumes are higher at some individual factories. But analysts still expect the iPhone to fare better than rivals. Cowen, for example, expects Apple handset shipments to be down about 1 percent for the just-ended quarter, while overall handset shipments could be down as much as 13 percent.

The divergence between Apple and the Android market is rippling through Apple’s supply chain.

“For Samsung‘s display unit, a better-than-expected performance in Q2 is expected due to shipments for iPhones, which is the only smartphone with strong sales,” said Song Myung-sup, analyst at HI Investment & Securities.

Cowen held steady its “outperform” rating on shares of chipmaker Skyworks Solutions, noting that it gets about 55 percent of its revenues from Apple for a radio chip in the iPhone. Skyworks rival Qorvo, by contrast, gets 30 percent of its revenue from Apple and has greater exposure to the Android phone market. Cowen downgraded Qorvo to “market perform.”

“Skyworks’ greater relative exposure to Apple in its mobile business likely insulates the company in the near term from significant impacts associated with… downward demand revisions,” Cowen analyst Matt Ramsay wrote in a note to clients.

iOS 16 Unveiled With Revamped Lock Screen, Notifications, System Apps at WWDC 2022: All the New Features

Apple has official unveiled iOS 16, the next-generation version of its operating system for compatible iPhone models. As previous leaks and rumours suggested, Apple has introduced changes and improvements across the system at its annual WWDC keynote event. The iOS 16 update will bring one of the biggest updates to the iOS Lock Screen in years with multi-layered cutomisation options. Users will have access to wallpapers with widget-like capabilities and the OS will allow users to pick from different typefaces and colour filters while customising their setup. They can also add widgets for upcoming calendar events, workout status and choose multiple widgets, while picking wallpapers and presets from a curated selection provided by Apple.

iOS 16 will also offer a Photo Shuffle mode that will allow users to automatically switch up their lockscreens. The update will also bring support for a Weather wallpaper that will show live weather conditions on the lockscreen, or an Astronomy wallpaper, to see views of the Earth, Moon, and solar system. Developers can also use WidgetKit to make it easier to bring their content to the lockscreen, according to Apple.

Apple has revamped notifications on iOS 16, so they don’t get in the way of personalised wallpapers and Lock Screen layouts. The lockscreen notifications on iOS will now scroll in from the bottom of the screen, making them easier to tap and access with one hand. Users can also pick from apps that make use of the Live Activities API to bring live game scores, check their Uber ride, or control music, from the lock screen, according to Apple.

Focus Modes

Focus modes were introduced with iOS 15, and Apple is bringing them to the lockscreen with iOS 16. Users can now activate Focus modes from the lock screen with a swipe from the lock screen. Users will be able to tie a Lock Screen Wallpaper and widget set up to a particular Focus mode, allowing them to switch between Focus modes by simply swiping to the corresponding Lock Screen.

With the arrival of iOS 16, Apple will also bring deeper integration for Focus modes to its own apps, allowing users to filter out tabs, accounts, email, and features from apps like Calendar, Mail, Messages and Safari. Apple will alert users with a message that says Filtered by Focus, for example, in the Messages app. This functionality will also be extended to third party apps, according to the company.

Sharing keys and IDs is getting expanded support in Apple Wallet, allowing users to share ID for identity and age verification. Menahwile, home, office, hotel, and car keys can be shared with other users securely via the Messages and Mail apps, allowing them to access the same keys directly in their Wallet App. The company says it is also working with the IETF industry standard for support to share keys with non-Apple users.

Apple also announced support for Apple Pay Later, a system to allow users to make four equal payments with zero interest and no fees, spread over six weeks. It can be used everywhere Apple Pay is supported online or in-app and uses the MasterCard network, according to the company. Apple will also let users check orders and track delivery with a new Apple Pay Order Tracking feature. The company says it has partnered with Shopify for the feature.

Fitness and Health

With iOS 16, iPhone users will be able to set up a daily Move goal in the Fitness app and track active calories to close their ring — the company says it will use motion sensors from the smartphone to estimate burned calories for the Move goal, by tracking steps, distance, flights climbed, and workouts from third-party apps. These can also be shared with friends, according to Apple.

Meanwhile, the Health app will be updated with support for a new Medications feature that will allow users to add and manage their ongoing medications, creating schedules and reminders for medications, vitamins, and supplements. Users in the US will also be able to point their camera at a label to quickly see details about the medication and learn of potential interactions. iPhone 14 Pro Models to Have A16 Bionic Chip Based on Existing 5nm Process Tech: Ming-Chi Kuo

Apple iPhone 14 Pro models will come with the A16 Bionic chip that will be based on TSMC’s existing 5nm process technology, an analyst has predicted based on the roadmap released by the Taiwanese chipmaker. The fab process of the A16 Bionic chip is believed to be the same that is used for manufacturing the A15 Bionic chip on last year’s iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro models. Apple is also said to use the same process technology for the chip available in its next-generation MacBook Air models that are expected to debut ahead of the iPhone 14 launch — maybe as early as June this year.

Citing TSMC roadmap and public announcements, reputed analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has tweeted to suggest that the A16 Bionic chip would be based on the N5P logic node that was earlier used for manufacturing the A15 Bionic chip. The analyst said that Apple would, though, still call the new processor the A16 Bionic for marketing purposes.

However, Kuo did indicate that there could be slight improvements in performance and power-saving on the A16 over the existing A15 Bonic.

Kuo previously speculated that while the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max in the lineup would come with the A16 Bionic chip, the iPhone 14 models would use the same A15 SoC that is available on the iPhone 13 series.

The latest comments by the analyst suggest that Apple would not be able to deliver significant chip-level performance differences between the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models as both would use the chips based on the same 5nm process technology. Nevertheless, the company does have a record of optimising user experiences by refining the software side of things.

Kuo also suggested that similar to the iPhone 14 Pro models, the new MacBook Air versions would continue to use the same CPU architecture that is available on the M1 chip, which is the same as on the A15 Bionic SoC.

Some previous reports mentioned that Apple would use the M2 chip on its new MacBook Air models. Kuo believes that while the M2 series with a significant performance boost over the M1 chip is quite likely to appear on the next 14- or 16-inch MacBook Pro model, the Cupertino company may eventually introduce the new MacBook Air with a CPU carrying the M2 title to enhance its marketing.

The prime reason for predicting why Apple is not likely to bring any noticeable performance upgrade this time is the fact that TSMC is not expected to bring the N3 and N4P logic nodes for mass production until 2023. The company has the N5P and N4 technologies that both do not include any significant differences. It, thus, makes sense for Apple to continue to use the N5P process.

First Real Full-Screen iPhone With Face ID, Under Display Camera to Come in 2024: Ming-Chi Kuo

The first real full-screen iPhone may arrive in 2024, as per analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The handset could be a part of iPhone 16 series and the first in the iPhone series to feature under-display Face ID along with an under-screen front camera. This year’s iPhone 14 series smartphones’ screen sizes were also leaked last month by a tipster. Previous leaks have indicated that Apple iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max could sport taller screens this year to accommodate a new pill-shaped hole punch cutout rumoured to replace the display notch on previous iPhone generations.

According to TF International Securities veteran analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the real full-screen iPhone will hit the market in 2024. He said, “I think the real full-screen iPhone will come in 2024. High-end iPhones in 2024 would adopt an under-display front camera alongside the under-display Face ID. A low-light condition is detrimental to front camera quality, and ISP & algorithm are critical for quality improvements.”

In an earlier tweet, Kuo had suggested that under-display Face ID will come to Apple for the first time in 2024. He had also opined that Apple’s decision to bring out this feature by 2024 is more for a marketing purpose than a technical issue, but now the latest tweet suggests that perhaps there were indeed some tech obstacles to cross.

iPhone 14 series smartphones’ screen sizes were also leaked last month by a tipster. According to the leak, iPhone 14 will come with a 6.06-inch flexible OLED screen while the iPhone 14 Pro will sport a 6.06-inch flexible OLED LTPO screen. The iPhone 14 Max will reportedly feature a 6.68-inch flexible OLED screen and the iPhone 14 Pro Max will sport a 6.68-inch OLED LTPO screen.

A previous report also suggested that iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max could sport taller screens this year to accommodate a new pill-shaped hole punch cutout, which is said to replace the display notch of previous iPhone generations.
