iPhone Sales Help Apple Beat Q4 Estimates, Holiday Forecast Disappoints Amid Weak iPad, Wearables Demand

Apple on Thursday gave a sales forecast for the holiday quarter that missed Wall Street expectations, hurt by weak demand for iPads and wearables, sending its shares down about 3 percent in after-hours trading. Chief Executive Tim Cook insisted that the company’s new iPhone 15 models were doing well in China, seeking to ease Wall Street worries that Apple was losing market share to a resurgent Huawei and other local smartphone sellers. Apple’s revenue from China dipped 2.5 percent overall in the fiscal fourth quarter ended September 30, though Cook said it grew after accounting for foreign-exchange rates.

Chief Financial Officer Luca Maestri told analysts on a conference call that sales for the current quarter, which includes the Christmas holidays and when Apple typically has its biggest sales of new iPhone models, will be similar to the previous year. Wall Street had expected a forecast for a rise in sales of 4.97 percent to $122.98 billion (roughly Rs. 10,23,790 crore).

Apple shares, which have risen 37 percent so far this year, dropped 3.4 percent after-hours, following the forecast.

Maestri said Apple expects to have higher iPhone sales for the fiscal first quarter, even though this year’s holiday quarter has one fewer week of sales than the year-ago.

“I’d say it was surprising to see how confident Tim Cook was on future China performance given the many potential geopolitical challenges that we know exist for that market,” said Bob O’Donnell, chief analyst at TECHnalysis Research.

Apple on Thursday reported sales and profit for the fiscal fourth quarter that beat Wall Street expectations, helped by an uptick in iPhone sales and a $1 billion (roughly Rs. 8,325 crore) boost to services revenue that offset large drops in Mac and iPad sales.

Cook said the company’s new high-end handset models – the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max devices – are facing supply constraints.

The Cupertino, California-based company has navigated a global smartphone slump better than many of its rivals, but faces an uneven economic recovery in China, a key market.

“While we believe investors should breathe a sigh of relief because sales and profits both exceeded expectations, the upside was small and we were concerned to see weak sales from China,” DA Davidson analyst Tom Forte said.

Apple said sales for the most recent quarter fell roughly 1 percent to $89.50 billion (about Rs. 7,45,130 crore), but beat analyst estimates of $89.28 billion (about Rs. 7,43,307 crore), according to LSEG data. Net income rose about 11 percent. Profit per share of $1.46 beat analyst expectations of $1.39 per share, according to LSEG.

Apple is facing tougher competition in the smartphone market this year as Huawei Technologies returns to the field with new phones powered by Chinese-made chips after being all but shut out of the market for several years by US government trade curbs.

Apple’s sales in China fell to $15.08 billion (roughly Rs. 1,25,544 crore) from $15.47 billion (roughly Rs. 1,28,791 crore)in the fourth quarter a year ago. Cook said that after accounting for foreign-exchange rates, Apple’s business in China grew year-over-year, driven by iPhone sales and services revenue.

“In mainland China, we set a quarterly record for the September quarter for iPhone,” Cook told Reuters. “We had four out of the top five best-selling smartphones in urban China.”

Cook said Apple was “working hard to manufacture more” iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max devices. “We do believe that later this quarter, we’ll reach a supply-demand balance.”

For now, the iPhone remains Apple’s biggest seller. Sales were $43.81 billion (roughly Rs. 3,64,732 crore) in the fourth quarter, in line with analyst expectations, according to LSEG data.

“We expect its performance to further improve in (Apple’s fiscal first quarter) as the supply issues of the top Pro and Pro Max models will be resolved by then,” said IDC analyst Nabila Popal. “Demand across regions continues to show preference for the most premium models, and we expect an even larger proportion” of those models this year than last year, she said.

The personal computer market is also expected to fare better in the coming year. Earlier this week, Apple rolled out new Mac machines.

Still, Mac sales slumped by a third to $7.61 billion (roughly Rs. 63,355 crore) and iPad sales declined 10 percent to $6.44 billion (roughly Rs. 53,615 crore), compared with expectations of $8.63 billion (roughly Rs. 71,847 crore) and $6.07 billion (roughly Rs. 50,534 crore), respectively.

Sales in Apple’s wearables segment, which includes the Apple Watch and AirPods, fell 3 percent to $9.32 billion (roughly Rs. 77,591 crore), short of estimates of $9.43 billion (roughly Rs. 78,507 crore), according to LSEG data.

Apple has faced several quarters of declining sales of Macs and iPads, and the fourth quarter continued that trend.

Sales in Apple’s services segment, which includes Apple TV+ and which recently closed a deal with global soccer superstar Lionel Messi, rose 16 percent to $22.31 billion (roughly Rs. 1,85,748 crore), compared with analyst estimates of $21.35 billion (roughly Rs. 1,77,755 crore).

AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) Updated With Adaptive Audio, Machine Learning-Powered Features and More: Details

AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) truly wireless stereo (TWS) earphones were introduced last year at Apple’s ‘Far Out’ launch event, and the iPhone maker is now updating its second-generation Pro headset with a few new features. The AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) arrived three years after the first model was launched and featured a new H2 chip with improved noise cancellation and transparency modes compared with its predecessor. Alongside the iOS 17 update that rolled out on Monday, Apple is also introducing new features on its wireless earphones.

Announced at WWDC 2023 in June, the first feature that has arrived on the AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) alongside the latest iOS 17 update, is Adaptive Audio. This mode dynamically combines the active noise cancellation (ANC) and transparency modes in real time, depending on the kind of environment the wearer is present in, according to the company. The feature will automatically be enabled and disabled, based on what they are doing and whether they are indoors or outdoors.

A new gesture that is now available on the AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) is the ability to pinch the stem of the headset to mute or unmute yourself when you are on a call. This can come in handy when you are on a call but your phone is charging and out of reach.

Meanwhile, a feature Apple calls Personalised Volume is also available that sets the audio playback level based on your surroundings using machine learning technology. Apple has also improved the ability of the AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) headset to switch between the company’s devices, as part of the latest firmware update.

Apple has also made it easier to have a conversation with the AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) in your ears with a new feature called Conversation Awareness. This feature will simultaneously improve the quality of the voices of people speaking with you while reducing background/ ambient disturbances and lowering your own voice. If this works as advertised, it should eliminate the need to manually toggle listening modes on the AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) entirely.

Apple is Working on USB Type-C Wired EarPods for Upcoming iPhones: Report

Apple is reportedly planning to introduce wired EarPods that support a USB Type-C connector with the upcoming iPhone 15 series. The Cupertino-based tech giant is already expected to launch future iPhones with support for USB Type-C connectivity. Apple still sells wired earbuds, which either come with a Lightning connector or a 3.5mm headphone jack adapter. However, their usage has been less as compared to the wireless AirPods, launched by the tech giant in 2016.

A reliable tipster ShrimpApplePro has shared tweets revealing that Apple has started the mass production of wired EarPods with USB Type-C connectors. He added that the company is also producing MFi USB Type-C cables. The tipster earlier tweeted that Foxconn has already started mass production of accessories like EarPods and USB Type-C cables.

Apple currently sells its wired earbuds with a Lightning connector or a 3.5mm headphone jack adapter, and are priced at $19 (roughly Rs. 1,550). Meanwhile, the wireless AirPods, launched in 2016, are more popular with Apple users. Now, with the introduction of wired EarPods with USB Type-C connectivity, Apple users will be able to plug in the accessory directly to the upcoming iPhones, which are also expected to switch to USB Type-C ports.

The Cupertino tech giant earlier provided a 3.5mm audio jack on iPhones for wired earbuds connectivity. However, with the launch of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, Apple started selling Lightning-powered EarPods. The smartphones also shipped along Lightning to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter.

It was previously reported, quoting TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, that the USB Type-C port on the upcoming iPhone 15 models will offer fast charging with the MFi-certified charger. It was also added that the company is reportedly optimistic about a rise in demand for 20W USB Type-C chargers in Q2, Q3 of 2023.

iPhones, AirPods Replaced With Replicas by E-Commerce Delivery Executive in Gurugram

A delivery executive of an e-commerce firm allegedly stole 10 iPhones by replacing them with dummy phones on the way to deliver them to the customer here, police said on Thursday.

Station in-charge of Matrix Finance Solution, which delivers Amazon‘s parcel, Ravi in his complaint alleged that on March 27 delivery executive Lalit was handed over a customer’s parcel, which contained 10 iPhones and an AirPods, at his address, they said.

However, instead of delivering the parcel, Lalit replaced the iPhones with replicas and sent his brother Manoj to deposit them back to the company claiming that the customer could not be contacted, Ravi said in his complaint.

Suspecting some tampering with the packaging, the parcel was opened and the delivery company found the fake phones inside, police said.

Meanwhile, upon not receiving his parcel, the customer also cancelled his order, they said.

An FIR has been registered against Lalit under sections 420 (cheating), 408 (criminal breach of trust by employee) of the Indian Penal Code at Bilaspur police station on Wednesday, they said.

Efforts are on to nab the accused who is absconding, they said.

Meanwhile, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the deputy minister for information technology, said that the US tech giant Apple could double or triple investments in India, along with exports, over the next few years as the company opened a second store in the world’s biggest smartphone market after China.

Apple mainly assembles iPhones in India through Taiwan contract manufacturers but plans to expand into iPads and AirPods, as it looks to cut reliance on China.

Its iPhones made up more than half of total smartphones worth about $9 billion (roughly Rs. 74,000 crore) exported from India between April 2022 and February, data from the India Cellular and Electronics Association shows.

AirPods Pro (2nd Gen) With USB Type-C Port to Launch by Q3 2023: Ming-Chi Kuo

AirPods Pro (2nd Gen) — the company’s successor to the first generation AirPods Pro that were launched in 2019 — could be released as a new model with a USB Type-C port later this year. According to information shared by an industry analyst, the Cupertino company could be working on a new AirPods Pro model that features a USB Type-C charging port, unlike the current model that features the company’s proprietary Lightning port. Apple is also rumoured to launch its next generation of smartphones, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro lineup equipped with USB Type-C ports.

TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has previously leaked details of several Apple products, states that Apple plans to launch a new version of the second-generation AirPods Pro with a USB Type-C port. Kuo was responding via a quote tweet to a tipster who claimed that iOS 16.4 contained references to new AirPods with the model number A3048 and a new AirPods case that bears the model number A2968.

If the analyst’s prediction is accurate, the AirPods Pro (2nd Gen) that were launched in September 2022 alongside the iPhone 14 series of smartphones, could be available in a new model with a USB Type-C port later this year. Kuo states that the new AirPods Pro (2nd Gen) model could enter mass production by the second or third quarter of this year.

This is not the first Apple product to switch the Lightning port in favour of a USB Type-C port — the company has already equipped recent iPad models with support for a modern USB connector, just like the Siri Remote for the Apple TV. According to rumours, the company is also likely to equip its iPhone 15 models with USB Type-C ports when they debut later this year.

The Cupertino company has previously refreshed its first generation AirPods Pro model in the past with a MagSafe compatible charging case, but customers had to purchase a new pair of AirPods Pro — and not just the charging case. There’s no word on whether Apple also plans on updating other accessories, such as the AirPods (3rd Gen) and AirPods Max, with USB Type-C ports.

Apple Working on Hearing Health Monitoring Features for AirPods, May Be Ready in Two Years: Mark Gurman

Apple is reportedly planning to bring new health features to the AirPods product line, but not before 2025. The Cupertino-based tech giant is likely to add a hearing-based health feature to the AirPods, including “the ability to get hearing data of some sort,” according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. While Apple is yet to share any details about its plans to launch new health-centric features for the AirPods, previous reports have suggested that the firm is also working on a new version of its AirPods that will compete with less expensive wireless earbuds.

In his latest Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman states (via MacRumors) that Apple is working on new health sensors, including “the ability to get hearing data of some sort.” The feature is likely to arrive within the next couple of years, according to Gurman. This hints that the new health sensors on AirPods could be seen in 2025.

Gurman notes that Apple has already been working on more hearing-related features that are available on AirPods Pro models, including Live Listen and Conversation Boost. However, these features are yet to be approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

According to an older report from 2016, the company was previously working on health monitoring sensors for future AirPods models. The feature would reportedly help measure temperature, heart rate, perspiration levels, and more, through skin contact and via built-in motion sensors.

Meanwhile, Apple is also reportedly working on a new generation of AirPods that may be dubbed as AirPods Lite. The purported AirPods are likely to compete with more affordable earphones with a target price of $99 (roughly Rs. 8,000). Additionally, there could also be an improved version of the AirPods Max over-the-ear headphones. Apple currently offers AirPods 2 for Rs. 14,900, while the AirPods 3 are priced at Rs. 19,900 in India.

Apple at its ‘Far Out’ event on Wednesday launched its second-generation AirPods Pro, or the AirPods Pro (2nd Generation). Like the company’s first generation high-end truly wireless stereo (TWS) earphones that made their debut in 2019, the new AirPods Pro 2 come with an inbuilt speaker with Find My support. The AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) are equipped with a new Apple H2 chip that the company says offers improved noise cancellation and support for Personalised Spatial Audio. The earphones offer up to 6 hours of battery life, and an additional 30 hours with the charging case. They also support wireless charging, along with support for Apple’s MagSafe, according to the company.

Apple AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) price in India, availability

Apple AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) price is set at $249 (roughly Rs. 19,850). In India, it is priced at Rs. 26,900. The company’s latest TWS earphones will be available for orders Apple’s online store starting September 9 and customers can purchase them from September 23.

Back in 2019, Apple unveiled the AirPods Pro, which were priced at Rs. 24,900 in India. Apple has also announced that the AirPods are now priced at Rs. 19,900 and Rs. 20,900 with MagSafe charging case.

Apple AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) specifications

The successor to the first-generation AirPods Pro that were launched in 2019 is powered by an Apple H2 chip. The new earphones offer support for Dolby Atmos and Personalised Spatial Audio with head tracking, which can be customised by a user, according to Apple. The AirPods Pro (2nd generation) feature a custom high-excursion driver with improved audio quality, along with a force sensor for pressure controls located along the earphones’ stems.

They are claimed to offer up to double the Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) functionality as compared to the previous generation AirPods Pro. There also an Adaptive Transparency Mode and each AirPod is capable of individually playing a sound, along with U1 chip for precise tracking via Find My built into the charging case. There is also a speaker on the case to allow users to find the audio device.

On the connectivity front, the new AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) feature Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity, according to the Cupertino firm. They will also feature support for skin-detection via a sensor, to identify when the earbuds are in a user’s ear to automatically start or stop media playback, along with a motion-detecting accelerometer, and a speech-detecting accelerometer. The earbuds and charging case have an IPX4 rating for sweat and water resistance.

Apple says that the AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) offer up to 6 hours (33 percent extra) of listening time compared to their predecessor. Users can get up to 30 hours of battery life, which is an increase of 6 hours, with a full charge. The earphones can be charged via a Lightning cable, wirelessly with Qi-certified chargers, and with Apple’s proprietary MagSafe charging protocol, according to the company. The earphones measure 30.9×21.8x24mm and weigh 5.3 grams, while the case measures 45.2×60.6×21.7mm and weighs 50.8 grams, according to Apple.
