Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 Shows Up on Geekbench; Tipped to Offer Better Cameras Than Galaxy S24

Samsung has not yet announced anything about its second Unpacked event for this year, but rumours around the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 point at a July launch. Amid speculations, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 has allegedly appeared on the Geekbench website with a custom Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. Additionally, a tipster claims that the camera configuration of the book-style foldable phone will be better than that of the Galaxy S24.

A Samsung smartphone with model number SM-F956U was spotted on the Geekbench website on May 17. The listing, speculated to be that of the US variant of Galaxy Z Fold 6 shows 6,619 points in the multicore test and 1,964 points in single-core testing.

These CPU frequencies and codename are associated with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Mobile Platform for Galaxy. This custom flagship chipset offers a higher-clocked prime core and a higher-clocked GPU compared to the regular Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC.

The Geekbench entry also suggests Android 14 and 10.86GB RAM on the Galaxy Z Fold 6. The listing was first spotted by SamMobile and independently verified by Gadgets360.

Google Launches Accessibility-Focused Project Gameface on Android to Offer Hands-Free Navigation

Google has expanded its Project Gameface, an open-source project aimed at making tech devices more accessible, to Android, and now it can be used to control the smartphone interface. The project was first introduced during Google I/O 2023 as a hands-free gaming mouse that can be controlled using head movements and facial expressions. These were designed for those who suffer from physical disabilities and cannot use their hands or voice to control devices. Keeping the functioning same, the Android version adds a virtual cursor to allow users to control their device without touching it.

In an announcement made on its developer-focused blog post, Google said, “We’re open-sourcing more code for Project Gameface to help developers build Android applications to make every Android device more accessible. Through the device’s camera, it seamlessly tracks facial expressions and head movements, translating them into intuitive and personalised control.” Further, the company asked developers to use the tools to add accessibility features to their apps as well.

Project Gameface collaborated with the Indian organisation Incluzza which supports people with disability. Using the collaboration, the project learned how its technologies can be expanded to different use cases such as typing a message, looking for jobs, and more. It used MediaPipe’s Face Landmarks Detection API and Android’s accessibility service to create a new virtual cursor for Android devices. The cursor moves following the user’s head movement after tracking it using the front camera.

The API recognises 52 facial gestures including raising an eyebrow, opening the mouth, moving the lips, and more. These 52 movements are used to control and map a wide range of functions on the Android device. One interesting feature is dragging. Users can use this to swipe the home screen. To create a drag effect, users will have to define a start and end point. It can be something like opening the mouth and moving the head, and once the endpoint is reached, closing the mouth again.

Notably, while this technology has been made available on GitHub, it is now up to developers to build apps using this option to make it more accessible to users. Apple also recently introduced a new feature that uses eye-tracking to control the iPhone.

iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Pro Display Production Said to Begin in June; iPhone 16 Pro Max Tipped to Get Upgraded Battery

iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro are expected to launch in the second half of 2024 and production of components for Apple’s next generation of smartphones is likely to start in the coming weeks, according to details shared by Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) CEO and Co-Founder Ross Young. Meanwhile, TF Securities International analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims that Apple will upgrade the top-of-the-line iPhone 16 Pro Max with a new battery that offers improved battery life compared to its predecessor.

Young states (via 9to5Mac) in a subscriber-only post on X (formerly Twitter) that Apple will soon begin production of displays for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models, as these are the two models with the highest projected volume. The analyst also said that the other two models in the series — the iPhone 16 Plus and iPhone 16 Pro Max are expected to take place at a later stage.

Meanwhile, Ming-Chi Kuo claims that the iPhone 16 Pro Max will be upgraded with a new battery with higher energy density than the current generation iPhone 15 Pro Max. If Apple decides to equip the handset with the same battery capacity as its 2023 flagship model, it could lead to improved battery life on the upcoming model. Kuo also states that the iPhone 16 Pro Max will be encased in stainless steel — Apple currently uses aluminium on its existing smartphones.

This year, Apple is expected to increase the size of two models in the iPhone 16 series. According to previous reports — and recently leaked dummy images — the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are expected to debut with 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays, respectively — an increase of 0.2 inches on both models compared to last year’s Pro and Pro Max models. The other two handsets are expected to arrive with the same display sizes as their predecessors.

The iPhone 16 Pro models are also tipped to arrive with an upgraded OLED screen that offers a 20 percent increase in peak brightness while displaying standard dynamic range (SDR) content. This means SDR content on the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max might be displayed at a peak brightness of 1,200nits, peak brightness for HDR content could remain unchanged at 1,600 nits.

Meta Reportedly Working on AI-Enabled Camera-Integrated Earphones Dubbed Camerabuds

Meta is reportedly working on a unique wearable form factor powered by artificial intelligence (AI). Dubbed Camerabuds, the device will be a pair of earphones with cameras attached at both ends. The cameras are said to pick up information from their surroundings and answer the queries of the user. The report claims that the project is currently in its initial stage and the company has not even finalised the design of the device. Further, the engineering team has also expressed several concerns with such a wearable.

According to a report by The Information (via Engadget), Meta is exploring a new wearable device that can identify objects and translate languages using AI. The device will essentially be a pair of earphones or headphones but they will have a couple of cameras equipped to each of the earbuds facing outwards. These cameras will pick up the information that the AI will process in real time to answer the wearer’s questions.

The device will use multimodal AI with real-time processing, similar to the company’s Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses (our review). Based on the information shared, it appears that the Camerabuds will be a more portable device with the main focus being two-way communication. It is not clear if verbal communication will be lag-free or the same as its AI-powered smart glasses.

While this is the plan, the report mentions that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is not happy with any of the designs so far, despite seeing several iterations of them. Further, it is said that the engineering team has also expressed several concerns with such a device. Some of the concerns include battery life, heat dissipation, privacy-related issues, challenges around users who have long hair, and more.

The report also pointed out that Meta has a track record of planning big hardware projects and abruptly shutting them down. For instance, it killed its smart speaker project called Portal in 2022. Earlier, it also cancelled its camera-fitted smartwatch project. However, Meta has witnessed significant success with its smart glasses and likely wants to double down on it with another similar product. Notably, the company is also heavily investing in AI.

Oppo Reno 12 series is all set to go official on May 23 and the Chinese tech brand is teasing its design through Weibo. Just a week before the official launch, more renders of the Oppo Reno 12 lineup have leaked on the Web. They show the Oppo Reno 12 and Oppo Reno 12 Pro from multiple angles in three distinct colour options. Both phones have an identical design with hole-punch displays and triple rear cameras.

Tipster Evan Blass (@evleaks) shared alleged renders of Oppo Reno 12 and Oppo Reno 12 Pro on X (formerly Twitter). The renders show the phones in three colour options. The standard model appears to have black, pink and silver colourways. The Pro model is shown in black, pink and purple shades.

The Oppo Reno 12 appears to have a gradient pink shade, while the Reno 12 Pro seems to have a matte finish pink. Whilst there is a slight difference in finishes, they look almost identical. The phones are seen with hole-punch displays, slightly curved corners, narrow bezels, and triple rear camera units. The large rectangular camera module includes “AI Camera System” text engraved.

Oppo earlier this week announced that Reno 12 series will launch in China on May 23 at 4pm local time (1:30pm IST). They are rumoured to come with a 50-megapixel selfie shooter.

A MediaTek Dimensity 8250 SoC could power the Oppo Reno 12. The Oppo Reno 12 Pro variant is said to run on MediaTek Dimensity 9200+ chipset. The Pro model is expected to sport a 6.7-inch 120Hz 1.5K display and a 5,000mAh battery with support for 80W wired fast charging.

Crypto Price Today: Bitcoin Price Rises Alongside Several Altcoins as Inflation Data Spurs Speculation on Interest Rate Cut

Bitcoin price on Friday rose by 5.56 percent and the digital asset is currently trading at around $69,196 (roughly Rs. 57.7 lakh) on Indian cryptocurrency exchanges like WazirX and CoinSwitch and $66,155 (roughly Rs. 55.2 lakh) on foreign exchanges like Binance. Earlier this week, the US Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics released the consumer price index (CPI) data that shows inflation recorded in April showed signs of cooling down. In the backdrop of this development, Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are now trading at higher values.

“The overall crypto market is stable now, with BTC showing good momentum post-CPI. Technically, BTC faces a short-term hurdle at $66,670 (roughly Rs. 55.6 lakh). Clearing this level could lead to a continued upside move. The major support is at $60,850 (roughly Rs. 50.8 lakh), and BTC should maintain its position above this level,” the CoinDCX markets team told Gadgets360 on Friday.

Cryptocurrencies that rose in value alongside Bitcoin on Friday included Tether, Solana, Cardano, Shiba Inu, Avalanche, Tron, and Polkadot.

Polygon, Leo, Cronos, Cosmos, and Bitcoin SV also saw their prices rise on Friday.

Ether is trading at $3,147 (roughly Rs. 2.6 lakh) on national exchanges and at $2,998 (roughly Rs. 2.5 lakh) on international exchanges, after its price fell by 3.30 percent.

“The ETH/BTC pair continues to drop, causing ETH to lag behind BTC, while alts are trading mixed. ETH, although bullish, is weaker compared to BTC. Key support for ETH is at $2,875 (roughly Rs. 2.40 lakh), and resistance is at $3,040 (roughly Rs. 2.5 lakh),” the CoinDCX team added.

Binance Coin, USD Coin, Ripple, Dogecoin, Bitcoin Cash, Chainlink, and Litecoin also dropped in value.

The overall crypto market cap stands at $2.36 trillion (roughly Rs. 1,96,97,456 crore) after incurring a drop of 0.90 percent in the last 24 hours, as per CoinMarketCap.

“While the broader market is in the red, a clear outlier amidst the leading cryptos is LINK (+13.6 percent). The Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation (DTCC) in the US, along with Chainlink and major US banks, completed a successful pilot to accelerate the tokenisation of funds. This collaboration is a step further towards the adoption of blockchain technology in the traditional asset management sector,” Parth Chaturvedi, Investments Head, CoinSwitch Ventures told Gadgets360.

In a recent development, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) suggested the appointment of multiple regulators to oversee crypto trading in the country. The suggestion was submitted to a government panel responsible for advising the finance ministry on policy formulation. On the policy front, Turkey and India advanced crypto policies on May 16 that could create a framework for businesses and investors operating in each country.

Android 15 Beta 2 With Private Space, Advanced Anti-Theft Protection and More Released

Android 15 Beta 2 was announced at Google I/O 2024 on Wednesday, a day after the company’s annual developer conference kicked off. The latest beta version of its next major operating system (OS) update is now available to download on Google Pixel smartphones and is coming to select smartphones over the coming weeks. This year, Google is focussing on adding new security and privacy features to Android 15, and the latest beta version contains powerful new features that are available to beta testers.

During a Google I/O developer session, the company showed off its first security and privacy-oriented feature coming to smartphones with Android 15 — Private Space. It will allow users to hide certain apps (such a banking, finance, dating, or social media apps) on their smartphone in a secure location. Apps in the Private Space can be updated via a separate Play Store app and will also have access to their own storage area not accessible to other apps on the phone.

Google says that the Private Space feature is located in the default app drawer on Android 15. Users can scroll down to the end of the list of apps to reveal the secured app. This segregated application list can optionally be protected by a separate passcode — or using a biometric lock — while allowing them to completely hide its existence.

With Android 15, Google is also upgrading its anti-theft protections, making it more difficult for thieves to use a stolen phone that has been reset, without the previously used Google account credentials. Android 15 will also ask users for their biometrics when attempting to increase the screen timeout, accessing passkeys, or disable Find My Device.

Another powerful anti-theft feature coming to Android 15 is “Theft Detection Lock”, or the ability to lock a smartphone when an “abrupt motion that could indicate theft” has been detected. Meanwhile, “Offline Device Lock” will also automatically lock itself if a user turns off access to the internet — something a thief might do after stealing a smartphone.

Remote Lock will let users send a command using a different number (when their handset is stolen) to lock and/ or wipe their phone remotely without logging on to Find My Device. Theft Detection Lock, Remote Lock, and Offline Device Lock are aimed at disincentivising smartphone theft and will arrive later this year on handsets running on Android 10 and newer versions, according to Google.

Other features coming to Android 15 include the ability to automatically enable Bluetooth the next day — we can assume this feature is designed to help Google ensure its Find My Device network continues operating as intended. Google has also added improvements to the widget picker on Android 15, as well as a redesigned volume control panel that offers better reachability during one-handed use.

Android 15 Beta 2 is available for download on the Pixel 8Pixel 8 ProPixel 7aPixel 7Pixel 7 ProPixel 6aPixel 6 ProPixel 6Pixel Fold, and Pixel Tablet. Select smartphones from a handful of manufacturers will also be eligible to install Android 15 beta versions, and you can access the complete list of compatible handsets here.
