Japanese Watch Giant Casio Forays into NFT Space: Details

Japan-based watch making brand Casio has decided to engage with a younger generation of clientele. Casio has launched an NFT series with eight digital art pieces that have been created in partnership with Astar zkEVM. Banking on Japan’s gaming culture, Casio’s NFTs will be made available on Astar’s Yogi Origin game. In recent years, Japan has come forward to show its support to the Web3 sector, especially under the leadership of its tech-friendly Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida.

A layer-2 blockchain for Ethereum, Astar zkEVM uses zero-knowledge proofs to increase scalability and reduce transaction costs. Announcing its partnership with Casio on X, Astar zkEVM informed the community members that these NFTs will be available within the ‘YoPort’ tab of the Yoki Origins game. Essentially, Casio has not rolled out its NFT series on traditional NFT marketplaces like OpenSea and Magic Eden.

“In celebration of Casio Watch’s 50-year legacy, we’re thrilled to announce the launch of exclusive commemorative NFTs inspired by iconic Casio timepieces. Minting Method: Unlock the thrill with Gacha & Reveal mechanics,” the blockchain platform said in its announcement.

These NFTs are tied to some benefits for holders. Ten holders of the NFTs will get a chance a limited-edition original G-Shock watches. In addition, owners of these NFTs can also receive ASTR tokens equivalent to JPY 10,000. At the time of writing, one ASTR token was trading at JPY 16.40, as per Kraken crypto exchange.

“Please note, the number of winners and contents are subject to change. Stay tuned for winner announcements,” Astar Network added.

This is not the first time that Casio has forayed into the Web3 arena. Back in 2023, the watch brand partnered with Polygon to launch a collection of 15,000 free-to-mint G-Shock Creator Pass NFTs. At the time, Casio had also launched its G-Shock NFTs into the metaverse.

WhatsApp Communities to Get New Events Feature, Replies to Announcement Groups

WhatsApp is introducing a couple of new features for Communities that will allow members to participate in newer ways. Meta, the parent company of the instant messaging platform, announced on Wednesday that it is adding a new Events feature and allowing replies in the Announcement Groups to make Communities more interactive. Events will allow members of a group to create any event and other participants can then add if they’re going or not. Notably, WhatsApp is also reported to be working on a Recently Online feature that will list users who have logged into the app recently.

Announcing the features in a newsroom post, Meta said, “To help bring communities even closer together, we’re adding a new way for people to organize events on WhatsApp, and we’re introducing organized replies in Announcement Groups so members can respond to important updates from admins.” As per the company, Events can now be created by any group member whose group is part of a community. The option to create an event can be found by tapping the paper clip icon in the text field which also opens options for polls and payments.

These events can be for anything including a virtual meet-up or a birthday party. Once an event is created, other members can respond to it. They can open the event and confirm whether they will be attending it or not. Everyone can see who will be attending the event and who will not be.

The events can also be found on the group’s information page. Members who will be attending will get a notification when the event is close to remind them about it. For now, Events are exclusive to groups in Communities, but WhatsApp has said that it will be rolling out the feature to all groups over the coming months.

Another feature being introduced is replies to Announcement Groups. Every community in WhatsApp has a separate Announcements group which is accessible to all members even if they are added to just one of the groups but only the admins can post in it. It is normally used to post major announcements that are relevant to all members. WhatsApp is now allowing all members to reply to these messages.

This feature is designed to let admins get feedback from the community in a single space. These replies are grouped and minimised to avoid cluttering, and opening it opens a bottom slide that shows all the replies. Reply notifications are muted for everyone.

Anthropic Launches Claude iOS App to Bring the AI Assistant to the iPhone

Anthropic’s artificial intelligence (AI)-powered chatbot Claude is now making its way to the iPhone. The company announced the launch of its iOS app on Wednesday and said it is generally available globally. This is the first time the AI assistant has left the web interface and received a dedicated smartphone app. Alongside, it also announced a new Teams subscription plan for businesses that will allow corporates to purchase Claude’s access for the entire staff. Notably, Anthropic released Claude 3 AI models in March.

In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), Anthropic announced the launch of the iOS app. The mobile app functions the same way as the web interface, and we found it quite optimised and user-friendly. The iPhone app comes with features such as seamless sync with web chats that allow you to pick up the conversation on the app after leaving it midway on the web interface.

The iPhone app also comes with vision capabilities. With permission from the user, the app can access the camera and the photo library of the iPhone to offer real-time analysis of the images. Users can potentially click a picture of an object and ask the AI to identify it.

While the app can be downloaded for free, it does come with the same restrictions as the free web interface of the platform. You only get access to Haiku or Sonnet AI models and there is a daily message limit which varies depending on the load on the server. Notably, there are three variants of Claude AI — Haiku, Sonnet, and Opus. Haiku is the fastest but the least intelligent, Sonnet is slower but more intelligent, and Opus does both.

If you do not want to hit the daily limit, you will have to pay $20 (roughly Rs. 1,700) a month for the Pro subscription. This opens access to all three AI models, a higher number of chats, and priority access during high-traffic periods. Alongside its iOS app, Anthropic has also introduced a new Team plan for enterprises, which businesses can purchase for their staff. The plan offers everything in the Pro tier as well as a higher usage rate than Pro and access to its 200K context window mode, which is designed to process long documents. The Teams plan comes at the price of $30 (roughly Rs. 2,500) per user per month with a minimum of five seats.

PS Plus Monthly Free Games for May Include EA Sports FC 24, Ghostrunner 2, Tunic and Destiny 2: Lightfall

Sony has announced the lineup of free games coming to PlayStation Plus in May. This month’s PS Plus offerings include four titles, led by popular football sim EA Sports FC 24. Other free games for May include action-platformer Ghostrunner 2, isometric action-adventure title Tunic and online shooter Destiny 2: Lightfall. All four titles will be available to PS Plus members across Essential, Extra and Deluxe/Premium tiers from May 7.

The PS Plus lineup for May was revealed on the PlayStation Blog Wednesday. All PS Plus members can add the four games to their library and access them at no additional cost as long as they have an active subscription. Ghostrunner 2, Tunic and Destiny 2: Lightfall can be added to the game library till June 3, but EA Sports FC 24 will be available on the service for an extended period till June 17.

Bear in mind that the free PS Plus games for April will be available till May 6, after which they will depart the service. April’s slate of PS Plus titles, announced in late March, includes first-person spell shooter Immortals of Aveum, spinoff strategy title Minecraft Legends and roguelike-action platformer Skul: The Hero Slayer. Here’s a look at the four free PS Plus titles for May:

EA Sports FC 24

This month’s PS Plus lineup will please FIFA fans as EA Sports FC 24 makes its way to the service. EA’s latest football sim, which launched last year in September, represents a new beginning for the popular franchise. The series shed its FIFA branding after failing to come to licensing agreement with football’s eponymous governing body. But FC 24 remains a familiar offering, bringing its arcade-style football gameplay across multiple single-player and online modes.

While there are no big changes in FC 24 (review), its Ultimate Team and Career modes are likely to keep players engaged until FC 25 arrives later this year. EA Sports FC 24 will be available to players on both PS4 and PS5.

Ghostrunner 2

Developed by One More Level, Ghostrunner 2 is a challenging action-platformer that features first-person parkour and sword combat. Sequel to Ghostrunner from 2020, the game puts players in the shoes of Jack, who can sprint, dash, wallrun and slide his way across challenging platforming sections and take on foes with his katana.

The game also provides additional tools like a grappling hook for traversal and shurikens for ranged attacks. Ghostrunner 2 arrives on PS Plus for PS5 users.

Tunic

An acclaimed indie action-adventure title that evokes classic Zelda games, Tunic lets players control a fox on an adventure through the ruins of a fantastical world. Much of the story unfolds through gameplay and environments as players find new pathways and instruction manual-style texts littered through the world.

Tunic encourages exploration and presents players plenty of puzzles and challenges in a cute visual style reminiscent of classic Nintendo titles. The game will be available on PS4 and PS5.

Destiny 2: Lightfall

After including Destiny 2: The Witch Queen in March’s PS Plus lineup, Sony now adds yet another major Destiny 2 expansion, Lightfall, to the service. The seventh expansion to Destiny 2, Lightfall was released in February 2023, adding a new story, gameplay elements, a new Strand sub-class and a new free-roam world to the base game. The expansion requires the base game to play and will be available on both PS4 and PS5.

This month, PS Plus members will also get the PlayStation Plus Football Ultimate Team Starter Pack to aid new FC 24 players on their FUT journey. Last month, Sony also revealed the slate of games coming to the PS Plus Game Catalog, available to PS Plus Extra and Deluxe/Premium tier subscribers. April’s lineup includes Dave the Diver, Animal Well, Tales of Kenzera: Zau and more.

Google Pixel 8a New Renders Showcase a Fifth Case Colour, Prices Tipped Too: Report

Google Pixel 8a is rumoured to make its debut at the company’s annual Google I/O conference, set to take place on May 14. As the expected launch date nears, more information about the successor to the Pixel 7a has surfaced online. A tipster has shared more renders of the upcoming Pixel phone’s cases and surprisingly there is a fifth colour option. The smartphone, on the other hand, is only believed to arrive in four colourways. Another report also highlights that the phone’s US prices may not witness a hike this year.

The information about the colour options comes from tipster @MysteryLupin, who also shared the previous renders showcasing the phone in four colours — black, beige, blue and green. On Tuesday, he posted another set of renders on X (formerly known as Twitter), where the cases of the handset can be seen. But this time, there is a surprise.

There is an additional fifth coral pink colourway, which was not included in the previous renders. While this development is surprising, it could be that Google might pull a move out of Apple’s book and release a coral-coloured Pixel 8a later this year when the phone reaches its mid-cycle.

Now, onto the price. A new report by Smartprix claims that the US price of the Google Pixel 8a will not see any hike and the smartphone will be available at $499 (Roughly Rs. 41,600) for the 128GB internal storage variant and $599 (Roughly Rs. 50,000) for the 256GB variant. For those in the US, this might prove to be a great value as the new Pixel phone is expected to come with some big upgrades while keeping the price the same.

The same report also predicted that the India pricing of the smartphone could start at Rs. 44,999 based on the pattern last year. Last year, the Pixel 7a sold at a slightly higher price than the actual currency conversion. This is normally done to offset the additional charges and taxes in the country.

Based on a previous report, the Google Pixel 8a is expected to be equipped with Google Tensor G3 chipset and get seven years of security updates. It is also rumoured to feature an OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and all the new AI features that were seen in the Pixel 8 series.
