Nothing Phone 2 Android 15 Beta Released for Testers

The first Android 15 beta version for the Nothing Phone 2 was released to testers earlier this week via a forum post on the Nothing Community. This is the second device from the company to get an Android 15 beta release — Nothing Phone 2a users got access to a test build last week. Users will need to ensure that their phone is running Nothing OS 2.5.5 before updating to Android 15.

Nothing Phone 2 owners can download the Android 15 beta release in the form of an over-the-air (OTA) update package, which means there’s no need to connect your phone to a computer to install the beta update. It is also worth noting that while you can roll back to Android 14, there’s no way to do so without the phone wiping your data, which means that you should back up all of your data.

Nothing Phone 2 Android 15 Beta: How to Download

In order to instal the Nothing Phone 2 Android 15 beta, you’ll need to download one of two beta update packages via the company’s website and save it to your phone’s built-in storage. It’s also worth reading the list of known issues with the first Android 15 beta, and make sure that you aren’t installing it on your primary device.

  1. Create a folder called ota in your phone’s built-in storage.
  2. Copy the Android 15 beta update package 2 to the ota folder.

  4. Tap the reload button to update the list in the local update tool that appears.
  5. Select the Android 15 beta update package you downloaded.
  6. Tap Directly apply OTA from select > OK to start installing the Android 15 beta package.

  8. Tap on Confirm and your phone will reboot into the new Android 15 beta.

Nothing Phone 2 Android 15 Beta Known Issues

While Nothing has said that developers and advanced users can install the latest Android 15 beta version, there are a few known issues with the first Android 15 beta build. For example, users cannot enrol fingerprints after updating to Android 15.

Similarly, the face unlock feature will also be unavailable, which means you’ll be typing in your passcode every time you want to use your phone. Finally, widgets and preinstalled apps such as Nothing X, Weather, Launcher, Recorder are currently unavailable on the beta version.

Android 15 Will Reportedly Improve the Standby Battery Life of Devices by Up to 3 Hours

Google shared more details on Android 15 during its I/O 2024 developer-focused sessions, as per a report. One such detail was about the company’s efforts to improve the battery life of the devices — particularly the standby battery life. The tech giant reportedly revealed that it has reworked the Doze mode in the Android system to ensure background apps did not keep running when the device was not being used. This tweak is said to increase the standby battery life by up to three hours for Android devices.

Writing for Android Authority, Mishaal Rahman mentioned in a report that he asked Dave Burke, the Vice President of Engineering for the Android Platform, and the President of the Android Ecosystem Sameet Samat, about the efforts being taken to improve battery life with Android 15. The duo explained that one important way this was being done was through the Doze mode.

For the unversed, the Doze mode was first introduced with Android 6.0 Marshmallow as a way to manage background processes in a device when it was left idle. It manages which apps will have access to run in the background and the duration for which it can run. The Android platform intelligently optimises idle time to allow multiple background tasks to run together in a small maintenance window. This ensures that different apps are not running at different times, keeping the device awake for far longer than necessary.

As per the report, Burke highlighted that with Android 15, Doze mode has been sped up by 50 percent. This means the device will enter this mode 50 percent faster. By increasing the duration of the idle state, Android will be able to govern background processes more optimally. This tweak is said to make a difference of up to three hours of extra standby battery life for devices.

Apart from battery life optimisation, Android 15 is also bringing multiple new features for users. With the Android 15 Beta 2 release, users saw a new Private Space that acts as a hiding space for certain sensitive apps. These apps will not show up on the Home Screen or the app drawer. Further, this space is also reported to be accessed from a separate Google account and will come with password and PIN protection.

Android 15 Beta 2 Rolling Out Now: Check New List of Eligible Phones

Google has started rolling out the Android 15 Beta 2 update for compatible Pixel phones. Several phone manufacturers have also seeded the beta update to their compatible phones and tablets. This update is said to offer increased productivity, battery life, and smoother app performances. It is also said to bring better user privacy and security. The Android 15 Beta 1 was released in April this year. The third and fourth versions are scheduled to be introduced in June and July/August respectively. Following are some of the new features and the devices that are compatible with the new Android 15 Beta 2.

The search giant confirmed that the Android 15 Beta 2 is available on all compatible Pixel phones right away. Meanwhile, several smartphones, tablets and foldable devices from brands like Honor, iQoo, Lenovo, Nothing, OnePlus, Oppo, Realme, Sharp, Tecno, Vivo, and Xiaomi are also eligible.  

Vivo X100 and iQoo 12 users in India, Taiwan, Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Kazakhstan and Indonesia can download the update from the Vivo developer website. Nothing Phone 2a alongside OnePlus 12 and OnePlus Open users can get the Android 15 Beta program via the Nothing and OnePlus communities, respectively. However, they are going to said to get the Android 15 Beta 1 version, as per their official releases.

The Android 15 Developer Preview Program is also available on the Xiaomi 14, the Xiaomi 13T Pro, and the 12.4-inch Xiaomi Pad 6S Pro. Users can download the update from Xiaomi’s support page. The update is also rolling out to Realme 12 Pro+ 5G which can be accessed via a Realme community post.

Honor Magic 6 Pro, Honor Magic V2, Tecno Camon 30 Pro 5G, Sharp Aquos Sense 8, Oppo Find X7, and Lenovo Tab Extreme users are also getting a Android 15 Beta version each. The updates can be downloaded from the company’s developer sites.

The Android 15 Beta 2 update introduces Private Space, which is considered as a digital safe for the applications you do not wish to reveal to others. Access to these apps will be granted through fingerprint scans and/or code. It also comes with ‘Save App Pairs’ which allow users to pin a combination of applications on the taskbar. There is also a Predictive Back feature, new changes in Picture-in-Picture, and more data types in Health Connect.

Android 15 Beta 1 Released With New Security and Privacy Features for Eligible Google Pixel Phones

Android 15 Beta 1 is now available to download on eligible Google Pixel smartphones for users and developers who want to try out the upcoming version of Android. Google’s next mobile operating system (OS) update is expected to bring new features and functionality, when it is released later this year. While the search giant is expected to unveil new Android 15 features at Google I/O in May, the first beta version gives us a look at new privacy and security features coming to the OS later this year.

According to details shared by Google on the Android Beta subreddit on Thursday, the first beta release of Android 15 is now available to download on the Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6, Pixel Fold, and Pixel Tablet. Users who installed the developer preview will automatically get an update to Android 15 Beta 1, just like users who have Android 14 QPR3 beta on their devices.

 

In its post on Reddit, the company said that it would have more details to share at its annual developer conference next month, but 9to5Google has already unearthed new features that were added since the last Android 15 developer preview. After installing Android 15 Beta 1, users will see a new section called Cellular network security under Settings > Security & privacy > More security & privacy called that allows users to require encryption when connecting to cellular networks, or receive notifications when connecting to insecure networks.

Meanwhile, a new Send device name toggle has appeared under the Privacy menu found in each Wi-Fi network details section. It appears under the MAC address randomisation setting and the description suggests that disabling the feature will stop sharing the phone’s name with the Wi-Fi network.

Two more additions appear to have been made on Android 15 Beta 1. Users can set a default wallet app (eg. Samsung Wallet or Google Wallet) under the Default apps section. Meanwhile, Pixel phone users who update to Android 15 Beta 1 will also gain access to new Pixel Weather widgets that can be added to the home screen.

While Android 15 Beta 1 is likely to be more stable than the developer previews that were previously released by the company, it is advisable to install pre-release software on secondary devices and not your ‘daily driver’ phone. It’s also worth checking Google’s official Android 15 Beta 1 release notes to see what bugs have been fixed and all known issues before installing the latest beta version on your Pixel phone.

Google’s Private Space Feature for Android 15 Will Let Users Hide Apps With a Separate Account: Report

Google has been working on a new feature for Android 15 called Private Space and a new report now reveals the features it might offer. In December 2023, a report revealed the existence of Private Space for the first time. But back then, its features were not known, and it was believed to just be a tool to securely hide apps and files that users did not want others to see. A new report now sheds more light on its functionalities.

According to tipster Mishaal Rahman (via Android Authority), Google has developed the feature significantly since its first sighting last year. The feature was spotted in the Android 14 QPR3 Beta 2.1 release. Interestingly, it is not available in the Android 15 Developer Preview 2 build. As per the screenshots, Private Space now comes with the description, “Hide or lock private apps in a separate space. Use a dedicated Google Account for extra security.”

The ability to sign up to Private Space with a dedicated account is perhaps the biggest development for the feature, as it allows users to entirely separate the space from the rest of the device. While creating a new Private Space, the prompt to enter a separate Google account reportedly appears again and states, “Using a dedicated account helps to stop synced files, photos, and emails appearing outside your space.” The tipster revealed that users will have to add a lock pattern or PIN to the space which is similar to the phone lock by default, but can be changed for added security.

Another major development to Private Space is the ability to install apps privately that do not show up outside of the space. The apps are downloaded using the Google account that has been used to create the space. As per the report, users can either download apps from within the Private Space through a dedicated ‘install apps’ button or by long pressing an app outside the space which shows an option to ‘install in private’.

Once created, Private Space shows up as a thin strip at the bottom of the app drawer with a lock icon placed at the corner, according to the tipster. Tapping the icon prompts the user to enter the password to get inside the space. The thin strip can also be hidden by going to Settings > Security & privacy > Private Space. Once hidden, Private Space will not be visible at all and the only way to find it is by searching for “Private Space” and tapping on the chip that appears.

Through the same settings option, users can reportedly also allow sensitive notifications on the lock screen, choose when to automatically lock the space, change its screen lock, and delete it. The feature has not been rolled out by Google, but it is believed that future Android 15 beta updates could ship with it.

Google Working on Anti-Phishing Scanning for Deceptive Apps, May Arrive With Android 15: Report

Google has updated Android with several security and privacy-oriented features over the years and the search giant is reportedly working on adding support for identifying phishing apps to protect users. Expected to arrive with a future update to the Android operating system, Google is developing a feature that will inspect app activity to check for deceptive behaviour, including phishing. The phishing app detection service will reportedly run locally on Android phones, while some detection-related details will be used to alert other users about the same threats.

Android Police reports that a new “scanning for deceptive apps” feature is in development and some references to the functionality are available on the second Android 14 QPR2 beta version that was recently rolled out to testers. The publication uncovered details of the feature in the More security & privacy sub menu in the Security & privacy section of the Settings app.

According to the report, Google will introduce a system service that will scan apps that show users a password field — while many legitimate apps also prompt users to enter their password, phishing scams are designed to trick users into typing their password on a deceptive website or app. However, it is unclear at the moment whether the system will scan all apps for phishing, or just unknown apps.

Another feature that was recently spotted in the works on the second Android 14 QPR2 beta version was a new ‘Private Space’ feature that can hide apps from other users. In addition to providing a safe space for users to be able to hide and lock their apps and files, the feature might even let users hide the fact that they are utilising the locking functionality by making them type “private space” in the search bar on the app drawer.

While Samsung has offered similar functionality via its Secure Folder feature since 2017, the addition of the Private Space feature to Android would allow all Android OEMs to provide the same functionality. Google’s upcoming feature, bringing the feature to billions of Android devices.
