Xiaomi 14 Ultra Tipped to Launch at MWC 2024; Key Camera Details Leak Ahead of Debut

Xiaomi 14 Ultra is expected to be unveiled soon. The model is likely to join the Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro that were unveiled in October 2023. These handsets are expected to be introduced globally at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 which will be held in Barcelona from February 26 to February 29. The top-of-the-line Ultra model may be launched alongside the other Xiaomi 14 models at the same event. Several leaks and reports over the past few months have suggested several key features of the purported flagship phone. The latest leak also hints at the launch timeline as well as some camera specifications of the handset.

Tipster Fixed Focus Digital (translated from Chinese) claimed in a Weibo post that the Xiaomi 14 Ultra is expected to launch in February. The timeline coincides with the MWC 2024 event, which has historically seen big launches from various smartphone makers. It is, therefore, likely that the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, expected to succeed the Xiaomi 13 Ultra, may be unveiled at a Xiaomi event during MWC 2024. The Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro models, which have only been launched in China so far, are also likely to be introduced globally at the same time.

The tipster added that the main rear camera of the Xiaomi 14 Ultra may support a variable aperture ranging between f/1.63 and f/4.0. Earlier leaks have suggested that the phone may feature a 50-megapixel Sony LYT-900 sensor with a f/1.6 lens as part of its primary camera. The rumoured quad rear camera system of the handset has also been tipped to include a 120mm periscope telephoto shooter and a Vario-Summilux 1:1.63-2.5/12-120 aspherical (ASPH) lens.

The Xiaomi 14 Ultra has also been tipped to come with Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, a 6.7-inch 2K AMOLED screen with 120Hz refresh rate, and a 5,180mAh battery with 90W wired and 50W wireless charging support. For security, the phone may also carry an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor. Like other Xiaomi 14 handsets, the Ultra model will likely also ship with the company’s new HyperOS skin on top of Android 14.

Notably, the Xiaomi 13 Ultra is equipped with a Leica-tuned quad rear camera system which includes a 50-megapixel 1-inch IMX989 primary sensor, alongside three 50-megapixel IMX858 sensors. The front camera of the handset uses a 32-megapixel sensor.

Apple Tops Samsung in Global Smartphone Shipments for First Time Since 2010: IDC

Apple surpassed Samsung to ship the most smartphones in 2023, shows a new report by market research firm IDC. It’s the first time the Cupertino-based tech giant has overtaken Samsung in worldwide smartphone shipments since 2010. Apple’s rise comes on the heels of the increasing popularity of premium iPhone models and aggressive trade-in offers. Global smartphone shipments dropped 3.2 percent year-on-year (YoY) in 2023. However, the last quarter of 2023 saw 8.5 percent year-on-year growth, indicating an expected recovery in 2024. Xiaomi is in a close third spot and other Chinese smartphone brands including Oppo and Transsion Holdings round up the top five slots.

According to analyst firm IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, global smartphone shipments dropped 3.2 percent YoY to 1.17 billion units in 2023 due to a difficult macroeconomic environment and elevated inventory. The fourth quarter of 2023 saw 8.5 percent year-over-year growth and 326.1 million shipments.

For the first time, Apple topped global smartphone sales outpacing Samsung and other Android phone makers. The iPhone maker enjoyed a 20.1 percent market share last year by shipping 234.6 million units. The South Korean smartphone brand shipped 226.6 million units and grabbed 19.4 percent market share. Xiaomi took the third spot by shipping 145.9 million units with a 12.5 percent market share.

Oppo and Transsion came in fourth and fifth, respectively. Oppo shipped 103.1 million units and got an 8.8 percent market share, while Transsion shipped 94.9 million smartphones and received an 8.1 percent market share.

In the last quarter of 2023, Apple led the market with a 24.7 percent market share, followed by Samsung, Xiaomi, Transsion, and Vivo in the top five places. IDC notes that the last time Samsung was not on top of the smartphone market was 13 years ago in 2010. Apple’s performance is attributed to the increasing trend of premium devices and interest-free financing plans.

“While we saw some strong growth from low-end Android players like Transsion and Xiaomi in the second half of 2023, stemming from rapid growth in emerging markets, the biggest winner is clearly Apple,” said IDC’s Worldwide Tracker team research director Nabila Popal. “Not only is Apple the only player in the Top 3 to show positive growth annually, but also bags the number 1 spot annually for the first time ever. All this despite facing increased regulatory challenges and renewed competition from Huawei in China, its largest market” he added.

Despite the decline in global smartphone shipments in 2023, the market is expected to recover in 2024, fueled by new launches and diversification of Android players. IDC’s Worldwide Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers Vice President Ryan Reith opined that the overall Android space is diversifying within itself. Huawei is making inroads quickly within China, and brands like OnePlus, Honor, Google, and others are launching competitive devices in the higher mid-range segment. Foldables and increased discussions around AI capabilities are gaining momentum indicating competitive market trends ahead.

Xiaomi SU7 Electric Vehicle Officially Teased, Confirmed to Run on HyperOS

Xiaomi’s first launch event explicitly focusing on EV technology will take place later today (December 28). Ahead of it, the electronics brand has posted a teaser on social media offering a glimpse at the company’s first-ever passenger car, an all-electric sedan called the Xiaomi SU7. The SU in the moniker stands for Speed Ultra. The four-wheeler is confirmed to come with Xiaomi’s HyperOS operating system. The EV is shown in a sedan-style design with a grey shade with five-spoke alloy wheels paired with Michelin tyres.

Lei Jun, Chief Executive Officer Xiaomi posted the first official look of the upcoming Xiaomi SU7 via X (formerly Twitter). The post includes a caption — ‘Hello, Xiaomi SU7 Welcome to Human x Car x Home’ — suggesting the four-wheeler’s integration with smartphone and smart home accessories. It is confirmed to be powered by the HyperOS operating system.

The poster indicates a grey finish for the Xiaomi SU7. It is seen with a sedan-style design with five-spoke alloy wheels paired with Michelin tyres with a Mi logo on the wheel caps. The side view mirror seems to include a camera similar to a Tesla car. Lei Jun already announced that the company prioritised intelligent technology in the new EV by drawing inspiration from advanced car systems like the Tesla Model S. He has posted a few interesting details about the Xiaomi SU7 including the meaning behind the name.

Xiaomi has already announced that it will host the company’s first EV launch event outside China, dubbed “Stride” on December 28. The event will begin at 2:00pm Beijing time (11:30am IST) and will last for three hours. The event will not see any product release instead Lei Jun confirmed that the focus will be on the technology behind Xiaomi’s first electric car.

The company has not disclosed any technical specifications for the SU7. It is currently in trial production and will hit the domestic market in a few months. Pricing details are still under wraps but Lei Jun promised that it would “exceed your expectations.”

It is likely that Xiaomi may unveil at least three different models with varying ranges and features — Xiaomi SU7, Xiaomi SU7 Pro, and Xiaomi SU7 Ultra. The Xiaomi SU7 is expected to have a 210km/h speed for the lower-end model and the SU7 Max variant may offer up to 265 km/h speed.

Xiaomi 14 India and Global Launch Timeline Leaked; Could Be Unveiled at MWC 2024

Xiaomi 14 was launched in China alongside the Xiaomi 14 Pro model in October this year. The phone is powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC and is backed by a 4,610mAh battery with 90W wired, 50W wireless and 10W wireless reverse charging support. The Xiaomi 14 models were the first phones from the company to ship with Xiaomi’s new HyperOS user interface. Now, the base Xiaomi 14 model is tipped to launch in India, as well as globally, in the coming months.

A 91Mobiles report citing tipster Yogesh Brar (@heyitsyogesh) suggests that the base Xiaomi 14 model is expected to be introduced globally at the Mobile World Congress 2024 which is scheduled to take place between February 26 and February 29. The report suggests that the phone may be unveiled on February 25, and the handset may launch in India on the same day.

Previously, the standard Xiaomi 14 model was spotted on India’s Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) website with the model number 23127PN0CG. The ‘G’ is speculated to represent the global variant of the Chinese counterpart. Although usually, the Indian variants carry an ‘I’ at the end, since the model was spotted on BIS, an India launch of the phone appears imminent. The phone was also spotted on the IMDA certification site as a “5G Mobile Phone with Bluetooth Wi-Fi and NFC” connectivity.
