Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 Mobile Platform to Arrive in October With Custom Oryon CPU

Qualcomm, the chipmaker whose SoCs power nearly a third of all smartphones globally, is working on its next generation flagship chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. The company has now provided an update on the SoC, that will likely power upcoming high-end Android phones. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chip will launch later this year in October at the Snapdragon Summit. This lines up with Qualcomm’s usual release cycle for its flagship mobile platform. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, which powers high-end Android smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and OnePlus 12, launched in October 2023 at the Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii.

In a video posted on X (formerly Twitter) Wednesday on the sidelines of Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Qualcomm’s Chief Marketing Officer Don McGuire confirmed the October 2024 launch timeline for the chipset.

The executive also reiterated that Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will feature Qualcomm’s custom Oryon CPU, first announced at the Snapdragon Summit in 2022. “Snapdragon Summit is coming up in October,” MGuire said “…there’s going to be some really cool stuff as our mobile platforms are reinvented with our Oryon CPU.” The executive said that the company would be bringing its “supercharged” Oryon CPU along with an updated Neural Processing Unit (NPU). “That’s going to be a killer combo in our Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 announcement, which I’m sure you guys can’t wait to hear about,” he said. “Coming in October 2024.”

While details are sparse on Qualcomm’s next flagship mobile platform, Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is expected to be designed using TSMC’s 3nm fabrication process, which Apple’s A17 Pro chipsets are based on. It will feature the company’s Oryon CPU, unveiled in 2022 for Snapdragon platforms. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite platform for AI PCs, announced at last year’s Snapdragon Summit, also utilises Oryon cores.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is expected to power upcoming flagship Android phones like Samsung Galaxy S25, Xiaomi 15 series, and Asus Zenfone 11. Qualcomm’s current top-end mobile platform, Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, launched last year in October. The chipset powers phones like the Galaxy S24 Ultra and OnePlus 12.

Qualcomm also unveiled a range of new generative AI features for Android smartphones at the MWC 2024 this week and introduced a Qualcomm AI Hub that offers over 75 optimised AI models for its platforms.

The chipmaker occupies a 28 percent share in the global smartphone chipsets market as of the third quarter of 2023, behind only MediaTek, according to Counterpoint Research.

Intel Launches New vPro Platform for Business Focused AI-Powered PCs at MWC 2024

Intel launched a new platform for artificial intelligence (AI)-powered PCs for businesses called vPro on Tuesday at Mobile World Congres (MWC) 2024. The new enterprise-focused platform is a cloud-based system that leverages AI to improve organisational workflows. The company claims that the platform will offer better security, more tools for IT to remotely manage and repair devices, wide range of AI features, and higher stability. More than 100 notebooks, 2-in-1, desktops, and entry workstations from different brands will get the Intel vPro platform this year.

The Intel vPro platform is built on its latest Intel Core Ultra processors with Arc GPUs and Intel Core 14th Gen processors. Refreshing its enterprise portfolio with the new platform, the tech giant announced that it was working with more than 100 software vendors, Windows 11, and Copilot teams to bring new AI experiences for the business focused PCs. To bring the capability, the platform will utilise the on-device CPU, GPU, and NPU (neural processing unit). For the PCs powered by the 14th Gen processors, its performance hybrid architecture will be used to maximise computing space to bring the AI applications and multitasking.

On the features and benefits of the new Intel vPro platform, the company stated that devices will offer 47 percent better office application productivity over a three-year-old PC. Security is also a big focus with the platform. Intel Threat Detection Technology will leverage the new NPU to improve the efficiency of detection of anomalies. It will also be able to detect such instances while consuming less power than older devices. Further, a new engine will authenticate system firmware to add another layer of security from cyber threats.

Diagnosing, managing, and fixing issues remotely will also be easy with the Intel vPro platform. A new feature called Device Discovery will allow cloud-based tools to quickly receive the necessary information to begin appropriate actions on a PC. More tools have been added to help IT teams gain visibility into the fleet of devices to check for patching requirements and delivering end-to-end device management.

Finally, stability is another focus area for Intel. The new platform helps IT organisations easily deploy tools and conduct transition of operating system generation without facing any compatibility issues or server-based lags.

Humane AI Pin Could Launch in India Soon, Suggests Co-Founder Imran Chaudhri: Report

Humane AI Pin was recently showcased at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 in its first public viewing since it was launched in November 2023 exclusively in the US. The artificial intelligence (AI)-powered device, with a unique form factor and no display panel, quickly gained global attention. And while other markets wait for the device to be launched, a new report suggests that the AI Pin could make its debut in India soon. Humane is the brainchild of Co-founders and ex-Apple employees Imran Chaudhri and his wife Bethany Bongiorno.

In an interview with Times Now Tech, Chaudhri, President and Chairman, Humane revealed the startup’s plans to bring the AI Pin to India eventually. He said, “We have been really impressed with the demand. We have seen the biggest interest for device in India. We are trying to figure out how to get in India and make sure we are culturally appropriate in terms of the types of things Indian customers want from their services.”

As per the report, the husband-wife duo will also spend some time in the country to better understand user behaviour and pain points to improve the AI Pin further before introducing it in India. For now, the startup is focused on delivering the first batch of devices to the customers in the US. It will start shipping pre-ordered units in March, and the first AI Pin is expected to be delivered in April 2024.

The Humane AI Pin was showcased at the MWC 2024

The Humane AI Pin is an interesting device. It was the first announced device that was entirely built using AI, followed by Rabbit’s R1 and the app-less AI smartphone by Deutsche Telekom that was showcased at MWC. Touted as a “smartphone without a screen”, the AI Pin is a boxy device that features a 13-megapixel camera with a 120-degree field-of-view, a speaker, a microphone, and multiple sensors. It also sports a laser ink display that can project visual information on a flat surface, or even on a user’s palm.

It is powered by an unnamed Snapdragon chipset for on-device AI capabilities, paired with 4GB RAM and 32GB inbuilt storage. The AI engine on the device is OpenAI’s GPT-4. On connectivity, it comes with support for 4G (eSIM), dual-band Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.1, and GPS.

AI Pin is capable of a diverse set of functionalities. It can draft and send emails, messages, and posts with verbal prompts, recommend songs and playlists, answer queries, search the internet, summarise texts, and even share information about an object in front of the user, such as a car or a restaurant.

Honor Reportedly Working on a Flip Phone, Planned to Be Launched Later This Year

Honor has made several new announcements at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 in Barcelona. The company launched the Honor Magic 6 series and foldable Honor Magic V2 lineup in international markets, and showcased its on-device artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. The Chinese smartphone maker also revealed that it is working on a clamshell-styled flip phone that will be launched later this year, and that it was looking to further expand its portfolio via a smart ring which was also in works.

In an interview with CNBC at the event, Honor CEO George Zhao was asked if a flip phone is also in works, after the smartphone maker held the global debut of the folding Honor Magic V2 series. In response, Zhao said, “This year we are preparing for the flip phone launch — now that we are internally in the final stage.” He also emphasised that the company felt confident about the future of foldable handsets and wanted to invest in it. “I believe this will create some market gap for newer vendors to enter or expand in the flip segment and test out the market,” he added.

Details about an Honor smartphone with a horizontal hinge and clamshell design have been circulating since August last year. A report highlighted that the phone could be called Honor Magic V Flip but not much in terms of specification has surfaced. Tipster Digital Chat Station (via GSMArena) claimed that the smartphone could be backed by a 4,500mAh battery, which could make it the largest battery capacity on a flip phone. At present, the Oppo Find N3 Flip with 4,300mAh battery takes the crown.

Zhao also teased that the company was working on a smart ring in the interview. He said, “Internally, we have this kind of solution, now we are working on that part, so in the future you can have the Honor ring.” Honor Ring could just be what the wearable is called. The timing of the information was also interesting as it came just days after the Samsung Galaxy Ring was officially showcased for the first time at MWC.

However, Honor is looking at an AI-enabled health focused device with the Honor Ring. Explaining the company’s vision with the smart ring, the CEO said that the wearable will be paired with AI-enabled apps that will offer professional training courses based on habits and health data tracked by the device. “I think AI will transform this kind of applications,” he added.

OnePlus Watch 2 to Arrive With Support for Improved Battery-Efficient Notification System on Wear OS 4

Wear OS 4 has reportedly received a tweak that can significantly improve the battery life of smartwatches that run on Google’s operating system. It will modify how notifications are processed by sending them to a different system, that is expected to improve the device’s battery performance. The OnePlus Watch 2, which was unveiled on Monday at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024, will be the first smartwatch that will support the improved functionality that could arrive on devices in the future.

Until now, notifications on Wear OS have been processed and managed by the application processor (AP) which handles tasks requiring more computational processing. As a result, displaying notifications also results in more power being consumed. On the other hand, tasks requiring less power such as step counting and heart rate monitoring are handled by a separate microcontroller unit (MCU). The Verge reports that Google will allow manufacturers to move the notification system to the MCU on Wear OS 4, and that will significantly reduce the amount of battery consumption that occurs when notifications are flashed.

The report highlights that the functionality was specifically designed for the OnePlus Watch 2, however, it is now going to be expanded to more smartwatches as well. Bjorn Kilburn, Vice President of Wear OS at Google told the publication that other companies will also be able to use this capability. This means going forward, showing notifications, dismissing them, or quickly replying to them will all be handled by the MCU. For the end user, this change is not likely to be visually noticeable, but they will be able to see the difference in terms of a longer-lasting battery cycle.

The OnePlus Watch 2 was showcased on Monday at MWC. The company’s latest smartwatch sports a 1.43-inch round AMOLED display and is powered by a Snapdragon W5 chipset as well as a BES2700 chip or background activity. It is backed by a 500mAh battery with 7.5W charging support. The OnePlus Watch 2 is priced at Rs. 24,999 and will go on sale starting March 4 via Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra, OnePlus online store, Reliance Digital, Croma, and other offline stores.

On Monday, Google also announced two more Wear OS features. Google Wallet passes have finally been made available on Wear OS and users will be able to access different kinds of passes directly from their smartwatches. Second, Google Maps for Wear OS can now show public transit directions to help users catch a bus, a train, or a ferry.

Deutsche Telekom Showcases App-Less AI Smartphone Concept at MWC 2024

Deutsche Telekom on Monday showcased a futuristic smartphone concept that relies on artificial intelligence rather than applications (apps) to handle users’ specific needs.

Smartphones today typically use apps for everything from messaging and social media to video games and banking.

The German company said the concept, which it is showcasing on its “T-phone” device, will have an app-free user interface developed in collaboration with partners Qualcomm and Brain.

“I can tell you that in 5-10 years from now, nobody from us will use apps anymore,” said CEO Tim Hoettges in a keynote presentation at the MWC tech conference in Barcelona.

Examples of what the phone could do include responding to prompts and generating tailored recommendations for travel destinations, buying a product for its owner, or sending pictures and videos to contacts, the company said in a presentation.

“The showcased product reflects Deutsche Telekom’s belief that multi- and crossmodal Large Language Models (LLMs) will soon become integral to devices, enhancing and simplifying the lives of its customers,” Deutsche Telekom added.

Technology and telecom companies are launching new products and concepts at the annual Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, hoping the buzz around AI will boost business prospects. Many experts say the technology can raise legal and ethical concerns.
