Xiaomi Tipped to Launch First Snapdragon 8 Gen 4-Powered Smartphone Ahead of OnePlus, iQoo

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC was unveiled in October 2023 and the Xiaomi 14 series was the first handset to feature this flagship chipset with a peak clock speed of 3.3GHz. The company’s next generation chipset — the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 — is expected to be released in the last quarter of 2024. According to a new leak, Xiaomi will once again be the first smartphone manufacturer to release a Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 SoC-powered handset. The Xiaomi 15 and Xiaomi 15 Pro could be the first devices to use the new chipset.

Tipster Yogesh Brar (@heyitsyogesh) on X (formerly Twitter) claims that Xiaomi will be the first brand to unveil phones powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 processor. The Chinese smartphone brand has “exclusive first launch rights” for the new chipset and the Xiaomi 15 and Xiaomi 15 Pro will be the first smartphone to arrive with the next generation mobile platform, Brar says. The OnePlus 13 and iQoo 13 could be the next two phones to launch with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4.

The Xiaomi 14 lineup was the first to get the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip after it was unveiled by Qualcomm last year. The Xiaomi 15 flagships are also expected to be introduced in China before they are launched in global markets. Based on the Xiaomi 14 series, we can speculate that these phones could be released soon after this year’s flagship processor is launched.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 SoC is expected to be designed using TSMC’s 3nm fabrication process. It could feature a custom Oryon CPU and Qualcomm’s FastConnect 7900 connectivity system. It is also expected to arrive on other flagship handsets like the Samsung Galaxy S25 series and the Asus Zenfone 11.

Xiaomi’s 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro were launched in China in October 2023. The Xiaomi 14 is priced at Rs. 69,999 for the 12GB + 512GB variant in India, while the Xiaomi 14 Ultra was launched at Rs. 99,999 in the country.

Xiaomi 14T, Xiaomi 14T Pro Reference Spotted on HyperOS Code, Unlikely to Launch in India: Report

Xiaomi 13T and Xiaomi 13T Pro with Leica-tuned triple rear cameras and MediaTek Dimensity SoCs were launched in global markets last year. Now, Xiaomi is said to be working on the Xiaomi 14T and Xiaomi 14T Pro. The source code reportedly found in the HyperOS code indicates the possible specifications and codenames of the Xiaomi 14T series. This suggests that the Xiaomi 14T Pro will have identical specifications to that of the rumoured Redmi K70 Ultra. Both models are said to go official in September in global markets except India.

Xiaomi has not shared any information on the Xiaomi 14T and Xiaomi 14T Pro, but Android Headlines have found a reference to both handsets on the HyperOS code. As per the report, Xiaomi 14T Pro is codenamed “rothko”. The Pro variant will reportedly debut as a rebranded version of the unannounced Redmi K70 Ultra and could feature a MediaTek Dimensity 9300 SOC. It is said to have “N12” as the internal model number.

The Xiaomi 14T Pro is said to offer wireless charging and include a telephoto camera with Leica lenses. The Redmi K70 Ultra, however, might lack these features.

The Xiaomi 14T is reportedly codenamed “degas,” inspired by the name of the popular French artist Edgar Degas. The report claims that the handset appeared on the HyperOS source code with the internal model number “N12A“.

Further, the report states that the Xiaomi 14T Pro will go on sale in different markets with different model numbers “2407FPN8EG“, “2407FPN8ER“, and “A402XM“. The Xiaomi 14T is said to launch in global markets with model numbers “2406APNFAG“, and “XIG06“. Both the base and the Pro variants are anticipated to be sold in many countries except India.

The standard Xiaomi 14T and Xiaomi 14T Pro are said to share similar camera and battery specifications. Like the Xiaomi 13T series, they might run on different chipsets. The Redmi K70 Ultra is believed to go official in China in August. Based on this, the publication speculates that the launch of the Xiaomi 14T series will happen in September. Since this has not yet been confirmed by Xiaomi, the information should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Xiaomi Removes Feature That Let Users Run YouTube Videos in the Background for Free: Here’s Why

Xiaomi has announced that it is removing a popular feature which allowed users to run YouTube videos in the background. YouTube Premium users, who pay for ad-free streaming, can play YouTube videos over other applications in a picture-in-picture (PiP) mode or just the audio in the background without the video. However, this Xiaomi feature allowed users to gain the same functionality for free. This move comes at a time when YouTube is cracking down on several third-party apps and features which presumably affect their paying user count.

The firm announced via a Telegram channel post that it will remove the Play video sound with screen off feature in the Video toolbox and the Turn-off screen feature in the Game toolbox via over-the-air updates. Although Xiaomi does not specify what compelled it to remove these popular features, the post states that the move is “due to compliance requirements.”

Notably, the action comes months after YouTube has been trying to push more people towards subscribing to YouTube Premium. It has tried to curb the use of ad blockers by slowing down video playback speed for users with ad blockers and making skipping ads significantly harder.

Xiaomi confirmed that this decision will affect all smartphones running MIUI 12, MIUI 13, MIUI 14, and the newly released HyperOS, including Xiaomi 14,  Xiaomi 13, Xiaomi 13 Pro, and Xiaomi 12T. Notably, Xiaomi introduced the feature to support video playback without the screen being active with its MIUI 12 update in 2021.

A recent report claimed that YouTube may be rolling out PiP mode for non-Premium users outside the US. But the company has not confirmed any such moves. Paying YouTube Premium subscribers using the Xiaomi models affected by the native feature removal, should still be able to use YouTube videos on PiP or background player mode.

Xiaomi 15 Series Could Feature an In-Display Ultrasonic Fingerprint Sensor: Report

Xiaomi 15 might bring multiple new advancements over its predecessor to users, as per a new report. The next generation of Xiaomi’s flagship series, which will likely comprise the vanilla Xiaomi 15, Xiaomi 15 Pro, and Xiaomi 15 Ultra, could feature an in-display ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, ditching the optical fingerprint scanner of its predecessor. Recently, another report claimed that the smartphone series could be powered by the yet-to-be-announced Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chipset. Notably, the Xiaomi 14 series, which debuted in China in October 2023, is yet to be launched in India.

Tipster Digital Chat Station posted about the new development (via GizmoChina) and claimed that the Chinese smartphone maker is working on a new fingerprint scanner technology. This move will see the company use an in-display ultrasonic sensor for the Xiaomi 15 series. The leak also added that the brand might use ultrasonic fingerprint recognition technology by Goodix, which is considered cheaper compared to similar sensors by Qualcomm.

Ultrasonic fingerprint sensors transmit ultrasonic pulse of sound waves inaudible to humans. The sound waves strike against the finger and return with the collected information. It matches the pattern of ridges and the space between them to recognise the user. In contrast with optical fingerprint sensors, it offers several benefits. As the sensor scans the fingerprint in three dimensions, oily or wet fingers can also be scanned easily. It is also a more secure method of scanning fingerprints compared to the optical method. Notably, the usage of this technology is limited to a few premium smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy S24 series.

An earlier report also highlighted that the Xiaomi 15 series could be equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chipset, which is yet to be announced. The processor might be announced in October 2024, and considering the Xiaomi 14 series debuted in China in the same month last year, the Xiaomi 15 series could be among the first smartphones to be powered by the chip.

On X (formerly known as Twitter), a tipster posted some details about the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 SoC. As per the leak, it could reach a top clock speed of 4GHz, showing a significant upgrade over the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip which clocked at 3.3GHz. It is also expected to be paired with the Adreno 830 GPU.
