iOS 17.4.1 Rolling Out With Bug Fixes, Security Updates Alongside iPadOS 17.4.1: How to Download

iOS 17.4.1 is rolling out to eligible iPhone models, bringing a few bug fixes and security updates in tow, according to Apple. The minor update comes shortly after the iPhone maker released iOS 17.4 — the update that brought support for third party app stores in the European Union (EU), transcripts for Apple Podcasts, and new emoji — on March 5. The company’s latest iOS software update has been released alongside iPadOS 17.4.1, which also contains some of these important fixes.

Just like previous iOS 17 releases, the latest update to iOS 17.4.1 is available to download on iPhone XS and newer models, while the iPadOS 17.4.1 update can be installed on eligible iPad, iPad Mini, iPad Pro, and iPad Air models. Users on the iPhone 8 series, iPhone X, and some older iPad models can download and install iOS 16.7.7 and iPadOS 16.7.7.

Apple’s release notes state that the latest iOS 17.4.1 update delivers “important bug fixes and security updates” and says it is recommended for all users. However, the company’s support page does not currently reveal details of security flaws that were fixed and states that details will be provided in the future. The company also displays the same message for the iPadOS 17.4.1 update on its website.

Earlier this month, Apple rolled out iOS 17.4 with several changes for users in the EU. In order to comply with the EU’s Digital Markets Act, the company now allows third party app stores in the EU, while users in the region are presented with options to set third party browsers as the default app on iOS. These changes are limited to iOS in the EU — iPadOS 17.4 was also released at the same time, without any of these features.

The update to iOS 17.4 and iPadOS 17.4 also brought support for new emoji — mushroom, phoenix, lime, broken chain, and shaking heads. Users who have updated to the latest versions will be able to send these emoji and view them in various apps, after updating to iOS 17.4 or iPadOS 17.4.

Appe also improved its Stolen Device Protection feature with the update to iOS 17.4, while enabling transcription for Apple Podcasts. Siri’s ability to read messages in different languages was also expanded, while owners of the latest iPhone 15 series will be able to see battery cycle count, manufacture date, and the date of first use in the Battery Health sections in the Settings app.

In order to download and install the iOS 17.4.1 update on your iPhone, you can open the Settings app and tap on General > Software Update > Install Now. The process is the same for iPadOS 17.4.1, and you should ensure that your devices are connected to a charger while installing these updates.

Apple Pauses Development of iOS 18 and macOS 15 to Eliminate Bugs in Early Versions

Apple has paused work on development of new features for upcoming versions of its iPhone, iPad, and Mac operating systems that are expected to be released next year, according to a Bloomberg report. The firm has reportedly asked employees to tackle bugs that have shown up in early versions of the code — the pause is expected to end at the end of the week — instead of adding new features that could make their way to iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15 in 2024.

The report cites unnamed sources familiar with the company’s decision and states that Apple’s software engineering team discovered several bugs that were not spotted during internal testing, leading to the decision to pause development of new features in order to tackle and resolve the existing bugs in the code over a one-week period.

Apple’s next operating system versions are expected to arrive in the form of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS 15, and watchOS 11 — the updates for iPhone and iPad are codenamed Crystal, while the Mac and Apple Watch operating systems are internally referred to as Glow and Moonstone, as per the report.

The pause on development of these operating systems has come after these three operating system updates reached their first major milestone, also known as M1. Ahead of development leading to the second milestone, Apple’s software developers will have to root out existing issues with the code and fix them.

As per the report, the company’s upcoming software releases aren’t the only ones that are affected by the pause put in place by Apple. The iPhone maker has also reportedly halted development on visionOS as well as the already-released iOS 17.4 — a minor update to the smartphone operating system that is expected to arrive within the first quarter of 2024.

While Bloomberg reports that Apple plans to lift the pause on development this week, the efforts to remove bugs from the code aren’t likely to affect the expected rollout of the updates — Apple typically unveils its next operating systems at its annual Worldwide Developer’s Conference (WWDC) event and rolls them out in September.

Resident Evil 4 Remake App Store Listing Goes Live, Priced at Premium Cost of Rs. 3,599

Listings for Resident Evil 4 remake’s iOS and iPadOS ports have gone live, showing a placeholder date of December 31. However, the mobile version is rather expensive, costing Rs. 3,599, matching the same default price tag as the mainline PC port. The game will be available with support for Universal Purchase, meaning the same app can be accessed across other Apple products you own, including the Mac. Similar to other Capcom titles, players will be granted a free trial/ demo before being asked to purchase the game for full content, hence it says ‘Free’ download on the App Store page.

Besides the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models, any Apple device housing an M1 chipset can run Resident Evil 4 remake, with Capcom promising ‘beautiful and detailed’ graphics on the Mac during their Tokyo Game Show segment. On the latter platform, the game is expected to weigh 19.3GB, while the phone version is around 700MB, which is likely to go up upon purchasing the complete version. I find it hard to imagine anyone wanting to play this acclaimed survival horror title on a mobile device at such a high price point, let alone having to deal with the abundance of translucent control buttons on the screen that make for an unsightly affair. The studio dropped raw screenshots from the iPhone port last week, and two-thirds of the screen is covered with buttons representing the PlayStation layout. Bear in mind that the images displayed on the App Store are largely from cinematics and do not represent actual gameplay.

As per Bloomberg, Capcom is looking to expand into new markets for ‘long-term growth,’ with India being a focus. The company believes that within the next 5–10 years, sales in the country will surpass that of China, but such claims are heavily misguided. For one, the majority of Indian gamers play on mobile devices, which while Capcom is willing to build upon as seen with the aforementioned Resident Evil 4, mobile players aren’t really willing to pay premium costs for such titles. Not to mention, the most commonly used mobile platform in India is Android. Secondly, the regional pricing system for Capcom’s games is on the higher end, often contributing to piracy — it doesn’t help that the average Indian gamer does not make premium game purchases. Rs. 3,599 isn’t a small ask for many.

At the Tokyo Game Show event, Capcom also confirmed that Resident Evil 4’s free Mercenaries mode and the newly launched ‘Separate Ways’ Ada DLC are in development. Furthermore, the studio confirmed that Resident Evil Village is coming to iPhone 15 Pro phones and the newer M1-and-above-equipped iPads on October 30, just in time for Halloween. Oddly enough, the game is priced $10 higher than the existing Mac version, costing $39.99 (about Rs. 3,330). This also indicates the lack of Universal Purchase — meaning, those who own Resident Evil Village on the Mac will be forced to purchase the mobile version should they wish to play it on the go. Pre-orders for the same will go live soon.

iPadOS 17 Offers Support for External Studio Display Webcam, Microphone via USB Type-C Port

iPadOS 17 was unveiled on Monday at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2023 alongside other software and hardware. The iPadOS 17 is likely to be available for users in the third quarter of the year. With this update, the message application comes with a user interface overhaul, the lock screen gets widgets and a new health app layout. The newly launched operating system supports Studio Display, other external displays, and microphones through USB Type-C port. Of course, only iPad models with a USB Type-C port will support this feature.

Apple demonstrated the process of plugging in external webcams or USB microphones to iPads supporting USB Type-C ports. To use the external devices, users will only be required to plug them into one’s iPad to start using them. Certain webcams and microphones may still be unsupported, but the company made a significant change. iPad users connected to a secondary screen will be able to use the webcam in front of this secondary device, instead of using the iPad’s inbuilt webcam.

The AVFoundation API can help app developers enable video rotation from both external and inbuilt cameras, and also let users choose audio input options, offer echo cancellation optimisations, and more. 

iPadOS 17 also comes with a new, customisable lock screen and stage manager enhancements. It will come with interactive lock screen widgets, a PDF-editing app that helps embed the PDF files directly in the Notes app for easy reference, and UI updates to the iMessage app. The OS also allows users to leave users audio or video messages when someone doesn’t answer their FaceTime call.

All developers have access to the first beta version of the iPadOS 17. A public beta version is expected to be available by August while the stable version is likely to launch by November this year.

macOS Sonoma and iPadOS 17 Unveiled at WWDC 2023: Here’s Everything That’s New

WWDC 2023 was home to the unveiling of the new iPadOS 17 and macOS Sonoma updates. Apple announced its latest software for the iPad and Mac line of products alongside iOS 17. iPadOS 17 focuses on improving productivity while introducing new features that focus on health, creativity and multitasking. iPadOS 17 features

iPadOS is getting support for customised lock screen for the first time. The feature works the same way iPhone users customise their iOS 16 lock screens. Users can personalise their iPad lock screen and set custom wallpapers, adjust the font, and set Focus modes as per their preferences.

Live Activities, another iOS 16 feature, is now coming to iPad with iPadOS 17. In addition to this, Apple is also adding support for interactive widgets in iPadOS 17. Users will be able to turn on the lights, play a song, or mark a reminder as complete from a widget without having to open the specific app.

The Notes app is also getting a new PDF experience. iPadOS 17 will allow users to quickly add details, such as names, addresses, and emails from Contacts in PDFs. “In iPadOS 17, PDFs appear full width, making it easy to flip through pages, make a quick annotation, or sketch directly in the document with Apple Pencil. Users can now review and mark up PDFs and scanned documents right in their note, and with live collaboration, updates appear in real time when users are sharing a note with others,” Apple stated in its blog post.

Apple has also added support for the Health app in iPadOS 17. Users will be able to check their Health data without needing their phone as the data from the iPhone’s Health app is already stored on iCloud. The Health app for iPad has been optimised and designed to take advantage of the bigger display.

There have been improvements made to Stage Manager, which will offer more flexibility to the position and size of the windows. The Freeform app will offer new drawing tools, support for hover, tilt, and snap to shape. It will also have the ability to add connection lines and new shapes to any object.

iPadOS 17 will be available to developers today, and is expected to be released to eligible iPad users later this year.

macOS Sonoma features

The new macOS Sonoma update introduces support for screensavers featuring slow-motion videos of various locations worldwide. It also lets users add interactive widgets to the desktop screen, which is also said to blend seamlessly with the wallpaper while users work in apps. The feature also makes use of Apple’s Continuity feature, allowing users to bring their iPhone widgets to macOS.

Apple, for the first time, has added a new Game Mode in macOS to take advantage of the Apple Silicon’s powerful performance. Game Mode is claimed to deliver an optimised gaming experience with smoother and more consistent frame rates, by ensuring games get the highest priority on the CPU and GPU. Game mode is claimed to be compatible on all existing and upcoming games on the Mac.

For those who attend meetings virtually, Apple has introduced enhanced video conferencing features that claim to present and share their work more effectively within any video conferencing app. It has a new Presenter Overlay video effect, which presents the user on top of the content they are sharing. There are updates to Safari, Siri, Messages, Reminders, etc.

Apple confirmed that macOS Sonoma will be available for developers today, and is expected to be available for eligible devices later this year.

Apple Rolls Out Software Updates With Critical Security Fixes for Older iPhone, iPad, MacBook Models

Apple has begun rolling out iOS, iPadOS, and macOS updates for older iPhone, iPad, and MacBook models. The updates address some critical security issues that needed immediate fixes for users whose devices are ineligible for Apple’s latest iOS 16.3, iPadOS 16.3, and macOS Ventura updates for iPhone, iPad, and MacBook, widely released on a stable channel recently. The company notes a list of 14 different critical security and system vulnerabilities that have been addressed with the latest software updates for older Apple devices.

The Cupertino, California-based technology giant has released a total of five software updates for older Apple devices. This includes iOS 12.5.7, iOS 15.7.3, iPadOS 15.7.3, macOS Big Sur 11.7.3, macOS Monterey 12.6.3.

iPhone models older than the iPhone 8 are ineligible for Apple’s latest iOS 16.3 update, hence leaving them critically vulnerable to security threats. iOS 12.5.7 and iPadOS 12.5.7 fixes these issues on iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, and iPod touch (6th generation) devices, Apple confirmed in its security bulletin. The iOS update for older devices addresses a critical WebKit Bugzilla vulnerability with tracking number CVE-2022-42856, which was unearthed by Clément Lecigne of Google’s Threat Analysis Group. The vulnerability was being exploited by malicious phishing attackers to remotely access devices, run unauthorized commands or code, additional malware, or spyware.

Other WebKit confusion-related security vulnerabilities addressed in the latest OS updates for macOS include AppleMobileFileIntegrity, curl, dcerpc, DiskArbitration, DriverKit, Intel Graphics Driver, PackageKit, Kernel, Mail Exchange, Maps, Screen Time, Weather, WebKit, and Windows Installer.

With such critical vulnerabilities, users are advised to get their device updates as soon as possible in order to protect themselves from malicious attacks. Users who own iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, iPod touch (6th generation), or devices running on macOS Monterey, macOS Big Sur, are advised to install the latest security updates by heading to Settings > General > Software Update.

Apple Reveals Serious Security Flaws Affecting iPhone, iPad, Mac Models; Experts Urge Users to Update Devices

Apple disclosed serious security vulnerabilities for iPhone, iPad and Mac models that could potentially allow attackers to take complete control of these devices. Apple released two security reports about the issue on Wednesday, although they didn’t receive wide attention outside of tech publications. Apple’s explanation of the vulnerability means a hacker could get “full admin access” to the device. That would allow intruders to impersonate the device’s owner and subsequently run any software in their name, said Rachel Tobac, CEO of SocialProof Security.

Security experts have advised users to update affected devices — the iPhone 6s and later models; several models of the iPad, including the 5th generation iPad and later, all iPad Pro models and the iPad Air 2; and Mac computers running MacOS Monterey. The flaw also affects some iPod models.

Apple did not say in the first or second report how, where or by whom the vulnerabilities were discovered. In all cases, it cited an anonymous researcher.

Commercial spyware companies such as Israel’s NSO Group are known for identifying and taking advantage of such flaws, exploiting them in malware that surreptitiously infects targets’ smartphones, siphons their contents and surveils the targets in real time.

NSO Group has been blacklisted by the US Commerce Department. Its spyware is known to have been used in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America against journalists, dissidents and human rights activists.

Security researcher Will Strafach said he had seen no technical analysis of the vulnerabilities that Apple has just patched. The company has previously acknowledged similarly serious flaws and, in what Strafach estimated to be perhaps a dozen occasions, has noted that it was aware of reports that such security holes had been exploited.

CERT-In Detects Threats With High Severity in iPhone, iPad, Mac, ChromeOS and Firefox Browser

The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) appointed by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has found multiple vulnerabilities of high severity in iOS, iPadOS, and macOS by Apple as well as Google’ ChromeOS and Mozilla’ Firefox Internet browser. iOS is an operating system for iPhone models, iPadOS runs on iPad models, and macOS powers the Mac machines. As per the nodal agency, these vulnerabilities can be used to bypass security restrictions and cause denial-of-service (DoS) attacks rendering the devices unusable.

Mac machines running on macOS Catalina with security update prior to 2022-005, macOS Big Sur versions prior to 11.6.8, and macOS Monterey versions prior to 12.5 are at risk, as per CERT-In. The vulnerabilities in macOS versions as well as iOS and iPadOS could be exploited by a remote attacker by persuading a victim to visit a malicious website. The cybercriminal can execute arbitrary code, bypass security restrictions, and cause DoS conditions on the targeted system.

The macOS vulnerabilities exist due to out-of-bounds read in AppleScript, SMB and Kernel, out-of-bounds write in Audio, ICU, PS Normalizer, GU Drivers, SMB and WebKit. Authorisation issues have been found in AppleMobileFileIntegrity; information disclosure in the Calendar and iCloud Photo Library.

Similar vulnerabilities have been found in iOS and iPadOS versions prior to 15.6. The macOS vulnerabilities exist due to out-of-bounds write in Audio, ICU, GPU Drivers, and WebKit, out-of-bounds read in ImageIO and Kernel, authorisation issues have been found in AppleMobileFileIntegrity; information disclosure in the Calendar and iCloud Photo Library, among others.

In case of Mozilla Firefox, versions prior to 103, ESR versions prior to 102.1 and 91.12 have been found vulnerable. The vulnerabilities exist due to Memory safety bugs within the browser engine, preload cache bypasses subresource integrity, leak of cross-site resource redirecting information while using the Performance API, among others. These loopholes may provide an attacker access to sensitive information on the targeted system.

The vulnerabilities in Google ChromeOS pose a pretty similar threat as Firefox. The vulnerabilities exist in Google ChromeOS LTS channel versions prior to 96.0.4664.215 due to out-of-bounds read in the compositing component, incorrect implementation in Extension API, use-after-free error within the Blink XSLT component, among others.

CERT-In says these vulnerabilities can be fixed by installing software updates. Users of these operating systems and Mozilla Firefox are advised to install the software patches as soon as they can.

iPadOS 16 With Better Multitasking Experience Unveiled at WWDC 2022

Apple unveiled iPadOS 16 as its new software release for the iPad at the WWDC 2022 keynote on Monday. The new iPadOS release comes with a redesigned multitasking interface that is aimed to help enhance productivity. It brings the ability to overlay app windows just like how you can on a Mac or Windows machine. Similar to iOS 16, iPadOS 16 includes updates including Live Text and the updated Messages for iPad users. The new release also includes support for games developed using Metal 3 engine.

Apple has initially released iPadOS 16 for developers who are a part of the Apple Developer Programme. The new iPadOS release will also be available to users through a public beta next month. Moreover, iPadOS 16 will be available as a free software update for the iPad (5th generation and later), iPad mini (5th generation and later), iPad Air (3rd generation and later), and all iPad Pro models this fall.

iPadOS 16 features

Continuing to silently bridge the gap between the MacBook and iPad, Apple has introduced its new multitasking interface on iPadOS 16, called Stage Manager, that is also available to Mac machines through macOS 13 Ventura. It allows users to access multiple apps on the iPad simultaneously by overlaying them one over another. The experience even grows further when you connect your iPad to an external display. This is an upgrade over the existing interface where users are allowed to access apps in a full-screen view like the one on an iPhone or access two apps side-by-side that Apple calls Split View. Further, there is an option to slide over an app from the side, which is called Slide Over.

The iPadOS 16 update will also enable users to resize app windows like on a Mac or a Windows laptop. This feature is, though, exclusive to the iPad models that are powered by the M1 chip. This means that you won’t get the new experience if you don’t own the latest iPad Air or iPad Pro.

Users on the iPad with the M1 chip also gets Collaboration to let users collaborate on different tasks. Users can access the feature through the Notes, Safari, Keynote, and other preloaded apps on the iPad. The Collaboration feature is also coming to iOS and macOS later this year, Apple said.

Apple has also brought an app called FreeForm to enhance the collaboration experience. It lets users share files, jot notes, or create diagrams with others. Developers will also get a new API to integration Collaboration into their apps.

Similar to iOS 16, iPadOS 16 comes with Live Text and Visual Look Up. The new release also includes the Home app with an all-new design and support for Matter. Further, the iPadOS update brings the new Messages app that is available through the new iOS release to let users edit or recall a text message.

For gamers, iPadOS 16 brings an enhanced gaming experience that supports Metal 3. The company has also brought a Background download API that allows users to multitask while the game download completes. Gamer Centre has also received Activity to the dashboard to let users look at the performance of their friends. The activity of users will also appear on the Game Centre profile of users. Further, multiplayer games played via Game Centre can access SharePlay to start a session with your friends.

Apple said that all the updates to Game Centre will be available to users as an update on iPadOS 16 later this year. The features will also be available to iOS and macOS users in the future.

The iPadOS 16 update also carries Live Text updates that are coming to the iPhone through iOS 16. Similarly, there is the updated Family Sharing feature to help users add new age-restricted features. The new iPadOS release also includes the updated Home app with an improved interface and lock screen widgets.

Apple introduced Quick Note, which was previously available to the Mac, to let you quickly write notes. The new iPadOS release also comes with the new Safari browser that is also available on macOS Ventura and brings features such as Shared Tab Groups and PassKey. Additionally, Apple has brought the Weather app to the iPad through iPadOS 16. It brings full-screen animations as well as tappable modules with access to detailed information. Developers are also getting WeatherKit to let them integrate weather updates into their apps.

Additionally, Apple announced ‘Desktop-level’ apps coming to the iPad through iPadOS 16. These will be able to use system elements such as undo/ redo across the system, availability view in calendar, and find and merge cards in Contacts. The company has also updated the Files app on the new iPadOS release with the ability to change file extensions, view folder size, and expand folders in the list view. There are also system-wide features that are aimed to deliver improvements across apps, including the redesigned find-and-replace experience, document menu in Files, Pages, and Keynote, and customisable toolbar to let users add tools of their choice. Apple has also added a feature called Reference Mode to enhance colour viewing on the Retina XDR Display featuring iPad Pro.

For Pro users on the iPad with the M1 chip, iPadOS 16 brings the ability to let users increase the pixel density of the display and view more in their apps. It is especially useful when running two apps in the Split View. Apple has also brought Virtual Memory Swap to let users virtually expand the available memory for their apps by up to 16GB by using the onboard storage on their iPad.

The list of new features coming through iPadOS 16 as well as the expansion of Apple’s pro apps to the iPad is likely to help the company grow its revenues coming from tablets over time. The updates would also make the iPad a better pick for professionals over Android tablets.

As we mentioned, Apple traditionally uses WWDC as the stage to unveil the latest versions of its operating systems, and this year, we should get to see previews of iOS 16, iPadOS 16, macOS 13, watchOS 9, and tvOS 16 before their beta and general public releases later in 2022. 

iOS 16 is expected to bring improvements to such features and apps as notifications, lock screen, Camera, Messages, and Health apps, apart from a new audio experiences, redesigned app icons, interactive widgets, upgraded theme options, and a floating app window. iPadOS 16 on the other hand is anticipated to offer improved multitasking, almost on part with macOS.

As for the company’s operating system for desktop and laptop PCs, macOS 13 – rumoured to be codenamed Mammoth – is said to bring incremental changes including design overhauls for native apps. watchOS 9 is anticipated to bring updates to areas related to health tracking, an improved atrial fibrillation feature, other day-to-day activities, as well as navigation.

Finally, while not much has been rumoured about tvOS 16, it may be that Apple chooses to unveil homeOS as a dedicated smart home operating system at WWDC22. We also mentioned that there is a chance Apple unveils new Mac devices at the event, and the latest rumours indicate the company will launch the MacBook Air 2022 in a 14-inch display size, and less likely, it may also unveil the anticipated 13-inch MacBook Pro, both powered by Apple’s new M2 SoC.
