Palworld Hits Fifth-Highest Peak Concurrent Players in Steam History, Beats Cyberpunk and Elden Ring

Palworld, an open-world action-adventure title where players can combat and capture Pokemon-like creatures, has become a phenomenon, rising to the top of Steam charts days within launch. The game, which also incorporates elements of the survival genre, now has the fifth-highest peak concurrent players in the history of the Valve storefront, going past heavyweight titles like Cyberpunk 2077, Elden Ring and Hogwarts Legacy. Palword developers Pocketpair also confirmed Monday that the game has sold over five million copies within three days of launch.

Released on January 19, Palworld, popularly described as “Pokemon with guns,” is tearing up Steam charts to become one of the most played titles in the platform’s history. According to SteamDB, which aggregates Steam player data, Palworld is now the fifth most played game on the service, with an all-time peak of 1,291,967 concurrent players. The action-adventure survival title is now only behind games like PUBG: Battlegrounds, Counter Strike 2, Lost Ark and DOTA 2.

Palworld’s massive success also means that it has left behind top-selling games like Cyberpunk 2077, Elden Ring and Hogwarts Legacy in its wake. CD Projekt Red’s RPG has all-time peak concurrent player count of 1,054,388, while FromSoftware’s acclaimed action-RPG stands at 953,426. Hogwarts Legacy, which sold over 22 million copies in 2023, peaks out at 879,308 all-time concurrent players.

The numbers are even more staggering if we look at current concurrent player counts. Palworld tops the chart with 895,847 players at the time of writing, with CS 2, DOTA 2 and PUBG: Battlegrounds rounding out the second, third and fourth positions, respectively. Palworld also tops the list of titles with highest peak concurrent players in the last 24 hours.

In a post on X, Palword developers Pocketpair announced Monday that the game had sold a whopping five million copies in only three days. Palworld reached the four-million mark on Sunday, with Pocketpair claiming latest sales momentum figures of 86,000 units per hour. The gamemaker has also been flooded be support requests, receiving over 50,000 inquiries. Players have complained about server outages, bugs and other serious issues hampering the game. The developer said that it was working to bring fixes for the reported issues, but it might take some time. “The development team is aware of serious bugs that are occurring, such as being unable to enter servers, unable to play multiplayer, and losing saved data, and are currently working on fixing them,” the developer said on X. “We will share information about the fixes for these issues as soon as possible.”

Palworld released January 19 across PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series S/X consoles. The game allows players to capture, utilise and combat cute Pokemon-like creatures — Pals — and survive in an open-world multiplayer setting. The game has been received well on Steam, with the overall verdict standing at “Very Positive” after 39,554 reviews. On Steam, Palworld is currently available in Early Access for Rs. 1,300, with an introductory discount of 10 percent live till January 25.

BAFTA Games Awards 2023 Winners: Vampire Survivors Crowned Best Game, God of War Ragnarök Bags Six Trophies, and More

Vampire Survivors took home the top honour at the BAFTA Games Awards, in what could be called the most shocking moment at the ceremony. The indie title won two trophies — Best Game Design and the coveted Best Game prize — beating out God of War Ragnarök, which was leading with six awards. Even developer Poncle confessed on-stage that they weren’t expecting to win. The ceremony was streamed live on Twitch early Friday, and saw God of War Ragnarök dominating the lineup with a record-breaking 14 nominations, though six of them were acting nominations for its stellar cast. The Santa Monica Studio-developed sequel, however, secured the EE Game of the Year, which is a publicly voted award that isn’t officially part of BAFTA.

After an early access launch for PC in December 2021, Vampire Survivors almost instantly became a hit, throwing players into pixelated dungeons to mow down thousands of night creatures, while stacking up on perks such as bibles and garlic to keep them away. Funnily enough, despite the game’s key art and title mentioning them, none of the monsters or playable characters are actually vampires.

Continuing his run from The Game Awards 2022, Christopher Judge secured another Best Performer win at the BAFTA Games Awards 2023, for his role as Kratos in God of War Ragnarök. Meanwhile, Laya Deleon Hayes, who played Angrboda the Jötunn, secured one for Best Performer in a Supporting Role.

Surprisingly, God of War Ragnarök also stole the award for Audio Achievement from Metal: Hellsinger, the rhythm-based FPS where you lay waste to demonic enemies while rock music blasts in the background. Critical darling Elden Ring won two awards — Original Property and Multiplayer — besting nominees such as FIFA 23 and Splatoon 3. The FromSoftware-developed title previously lifted the Game of the Year trophy at The Game Awards 2022 and at the DICE Awards, last month.

Meanwhile, you can grab God of War (2018) at a 40 percent discount for Rs. 1,979, while the recent PlayStation PC port of Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered is available at Rs. 2,999.

Cyberpunk 2077, which has been enjoying a massive resurgence in player count over the past couple of months, has seen its price slashed in half. It’s now at Rs. 1,499. You can also go back in time to experience the tale of outlaw Arthur Morgan in Red Dead Redemption 2, which maintains the same price drop as seen during the Steam Autumn Sale. Its online PvP features were recently restored, following a 10-month-long downtime after the discovery of a crucial security vulnerability. Understandably, the games returning to their original state caused fans to assume they will finally go on sale, but it seems publisher Bandai Namco has different plans. It’s been exactly a year since all three Dark Souls games received a discount on PC.

Developed by Eidos-Montréal, Guardians of the Galaxy is available for Rs. 1,049 (that’s 65 percent off). On the DC Comics side, you should undoubtedly get the Batman: Arkham Collection, which includes the entire trilogy from Rocksteady Studios, in addition to a Season Pass for Batman: Arkham Knight. Elden Ring – Someone Completed In Just 12 Minutes & 32 Seconds

Yesterday, YouTuber and speedrunner MitChriz beat Elden Ring in simply 12 minutes and 32 seconds, setting what seems to be a new record in the “any% unrestricted” speedrunning category for the game.

To pull this off, you probably already guessed that there were some shenanigans and trickery happening in the run. And you would be correct. MitChriz used an Elden Ring speedrunning trick known as “zipping” to basically teleport around the world. This saves a lot of time compared to running in every single place or even using your trusting, double-jumping horse.

Using this trick, MitChriz was easily able to bypass the Limgrave section of the game and then popped straight over to Liurnia, where they use a now accessible waygate to access a late-game area. Using the zipping trick, they then skip past all but one of the bosses and reach the final boss in record time. Using the zip trick they skip past that boss fight too and finish the game in under 13 minutes.

I remember last month when I thought beating Elden Ring in 37 minutes was fast.

What is Zipping in a Game?

Well, it’s a speedrunning technique that has become more popular recently among runners focused on setting new record times in the any% unrestricted category for Elden Ring. On this specific category, players aren’t required to get all the runes, complete all the steps or do anything else that is usually needed to progress through the game. The main goal in this speedrun is to just reach the end and get to the ending as fast as possible using any tricks or methods you can.

And before someone gets angry at MitChriz for using glitches or tricks to beat the game, remember that this is just one type of speedrun category that exists for Elden Ring and that other players are out there setting times for runs that involve beating every boss or never taking damage, etc.

Let’s wait for someone else to beat Elden Ring in under 10 minutes.
