Nothing Phone 2a Flipkart Availability Confirmed; Key Specifications Leaked With Live Images

Nothing Phone 2a, the third smartphone from the brand led by former OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei, will launch soon in India. Ahead of the formal debut, the UK-based company has confirmed that the upcoming phone will be sold via Flipkart in India. Additionally, alleged hands-on images of the Nothing Phone 2a have surfaced on the Web alongside its specifications. The latest leak appears to show a black version of the Phone 2a. It is seen with a hole-punch cutout located in the centre of the screen for the selfie camera. The Nothing Phone 2a is tipped to run on MediaTek Dimensity 7200 SoC.

Flipkart has created a dedicated microsite on its website to tease the arrival of the Nothing Phone 2a smartphone. The page has listed the handset with a “coming soon” tag and it carries a Nothing community update video in which the company’s co-founder and marketing lead Akis Evangelidis talks about the upcoming handset. The landing page doesn’t specify the launch date or any key features of the phone.

Additionally, a Reddit user has shared (via @yabhishekhd) alleged hands-on images and specifications of the Nothing Phone 2a. The images show the front and back of the handset with a privacy cover and suggest a design language different from its siblings. However, it is seen in a black shade with a centrally placed hole-punch cutout for the selfie camera. Despite the presence of a privacy cover, the photos indicate that the phone has two rear-facing cameras. The rear cameras are seen mounted horizontally and closer towards the centre of its back panel.

Based on the leak, Nothing Phone 2a will run on Android 13 and bring a 6.7-inch full-HD+ AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate. It is said to carry a MediaTek Dimensity 7200 SoC under the hood. The phone could carry a dual rear camera setup, comprising a 50-megapixel Samsung GN9 sensor and a 50-megapixel JN1 camera. It could get a 32-megapixel Sony IMX615 front camera. It is said to be available in black and white shades.

Although a launch date has not been announced for Nothing Phone 2a, we expect this to happen sometime around Mobile Word Congress (MWC) 2024 later this month. The handset is codenamed Aerodactyl and is confirmed to leverage some of the features of last year’s Nothing Phone 2 and is claimed to deliver an upgraded experience compared to the Nothing Phone 1.

Will the Nothing Phone 2 serve as the successor to the Phone 1, or will the two co-exist? Keen customers can click on the “Notify Me” button on the website to get the latest updates about the launch.

The landing page doesn’t uncover much about the Nothing Phone 2a, but the company claims that it has been engineered with a focus on providing the optimal daily smartphone experience, doubling down on core user needs, with all of Nothing’s expertise and craftsmanship. Nothing Phone 2, Phone 1 Users Can Access ChatGPT Voice Shortcut From The Home Screen

ChatGPT, the AI chatbot by OpenAI, was released for Android and iOS last year. Now, Nothing Phone users can get hands-free access to AI assistance with ChatGPT. Nothing Phone 1 and Phone 2 users can now quickly access ChatGPT voice commands directly from their home screen and Quick Setting panel with a new shortcut. The voice assistant works similarly to Google Assistant and Apple’s Siri.

Nothing CEO Carl Pei announced via a video post on X (formerly known as Twitter) that the Nothing Phone 1 and Phone 2 have received ChatGPT’s Quick Settings shortcut. With this, users of Nothing handsets can access ChatGPT’s voice Assistant through its new Quick Settings option.

As explained in the video post, Nothing OS users have to install the official ChatGPT android app from the Google Play Store and use the voice chat feature at least once within the app to get past the setup. Then users can add the ChatGPT shortcut in both the Quick Settings panel and Quick Settings widget. Tapping on this shortcut icon will run the ChatGPT-powered voice assistant.

With the latest development, ChatGPT will function like an assistant on Android devices like Google’s Assistant and Apple’s Siri.

Nothing currently has the Nothing Phone 1 and Nothing Phone 2 in its smartphone portfolio. The Nothing Phone 1 was launched in July 2022 with a starting price tag of Rs. 32,999 for the 8GB RAM + 128GB storage variant. Meanwhile, the Nothing Phone 2 debuted in July last year with an initial price tag of Rs. 44,999 for the base 8GB RAM + 128GB storage configuration. The Phone 2 runs on the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC and features a revised Glyph Interface with LED lighting.

Nothing Schedules an Event During MWC 2024; May Offer a Sneak Peek at Phone 3

Nothing Phone 2 was launched in India in July this year as the second smartphone offering from the UK-based brand. The Nothing Phone 3 is expected to break the covers as a possible successor of the Phone 2 around a similar time in 2024. Now, the Carl Pei-led company has announced an event for February 2024 at the Mobile World Congress (MWC). This could be the first hint at its next product release. Notably, Nothing confirmed the arrival of Nothing Phone 2 during the MWC 2023.

Through a media invite, (via RapidZapper) Nothing has revealed that it has scheduled an event for the MWC 2024. The event billed as ‘Nothing to See’ will take place on February 27. The MWC 2024 event runs between February 26 and February 29 in Barcelona.

If Nothing’s past moves are anything to judge by, we can consider the February event an early teaser for the Nothing Phone 3 or Phone (2a). Nothing used previous MWC conferences to build hype for its Phone 1 and Phone 2. Carl Pei showcased a prototype of the Nothing Phone 1 back in MWC 2022 whereas the brand confirmed the Snapdragon 8-series processor for Phone 2 at this year’s MWC.

Rumours about the Nothing Phone 3 or Phone (2a) have already emerged on the Web earlier. The company is speculated to stick to its transparent back design with the next handset.

A Nothing smartphone with the model number A142 was recently spotted on the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) website. It is expected to come with a 6.7-inch AMOLED display and could include a mid-range Snapdragon or MediaTek Dimensity chipset.

Nothing currently has the Nothing Phone 1 and Nothing Phone 2 in its smartphone portfolio. The latter was unveiled in July with a starting price of Rs. 44,999 for the base 8GB RAM + 128GB storage configuration. It runs on the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC and features a revised Glyph Interface with LED lighting.

Nothing Chats App Pulled From Google Play Store Amid Widespread Privacy Concerns

Nothing launched the Nothing Chats messaging platform last week to dismantle messaging barriers between Android and iOS devices in collaboration with Sunbird. The messaging app allows Nothing Phone 2 users to send and receive texts via iMessage enabling messages to appear as blue bubbles on iMessage. It also supports texting over the RCS protocol to other Android phones, along with SMS and MMS. However, since its announcement, a lot of users have voiced concerns over the security and privacy issues of the service. Now, the Carl Pei-led UK startup has pulled the beta for its new messaging app from the Google Play Store due to privacy concerns.

Nothing has pulled the Nothing Chats beta from Google Play Store saying it is “delaying the launch until further notice to work with Sunbird to fix several bugs”. The company did not specify the bugs or address any privacy issues.

The removal came after users widely criticised the system for transmitting Apple ID credentials via HTTP rather than the more secure HTTPS. Users are required to log in with their Apple ID through the Nothing Chats app to use iMessage services. This routes the login through a Mac located in a remote server farm. Kishan Bagaria, the founder of Texts.com, took to X to call the app “extremely insecure,” claiming that messages sent with Sunbird’s system are not end-to-end encrypted and it relies on a BlueBubbles-powered backend.

Additionally, Dylan Roussel (@evowizz) pointed out that Sunbird has access to every message sent and received through the app on your device. All of the documents (images, videos, audio, PDFs, vCards…) sent through Nothing Chats and Sunbird are public.

Meanwhile, another X user wukko(@uwukko) posted findings that the Nothing Chats app sends all messages and media attachments to Sentry. Further, “all” data is sent and stored through Firebase, and it’s also completely unencrypted.

The Nothing Chats app was built to bring iMessage support to Android. It allowed blue bubble conversations from an Android phone with iMessage users and also supports RCS (Rich communication services) between compatible devices. The app also gets features like end-to-end encryption, group messaging, live typing indications, high-resolution media sharing, read and delivery receipts, and responding with reactions, with more claimed to come in the future.

Nothing Phone 2 Users Get Nothing OS 2.5 Open Beta 2 Update; Nothing OS 3 Teased

Nothing has released the Nothing OS 2.5 Open Beta 2 for Nothing Phone 2 users. This follows the Nothing OS 2.5 Open Beta 1, which was introduced in October this year. With the Open Beta 2, the company brings upgraded features including an updated Glyph Interface. The Android 14-based update also brings several new widgets. However, since this is a Beta release, Nothing warns that it may interfere with the data and performance of the phone, therefore, users should choose to backup all their important data. The company also allows users to roll back from this Beta version to Nothing OS 2.0.4.

In a community post, Nothing states that the Nothing OS 2.5 Open Beta 2 supports the Predictive Back feature on all Nothing applications. Phone 2 users can also add more options to the double-press power button gesture. This version comes with updated status bar icons. It claims to improve the three-finger swipe gesture. Alongside general bug fixes, it also gets other minor UI enhancements.

Updates to the Glyph Interface include a Glyph Timer, that now supports time presets and can be opened directly from the lock screen, Glyph Progress integration for Google Calendar, and a new Glyph animation when NFC is used. The Nothing OS 2.5 Open Beta 2 comes with lock screen widgets support and introduces a new pedometer widget with custom animation progress, and step tracking. It also allows users to use a screentime widget to keep track of their screentime and also adds a new media widget for navigating music or podcasts from different media players.

Nothing Phone 2 users will need to download the Nothing OS Beta tool APK file (link available on the Community post) to get the Beta installer app. They can then go to Settings > System > Update to Beta version, then tap Check for New Version and follow the steps on the screen to complete the process.

In a Community update video, Nothing also teased the Nothing OS 3, which is said to come with considerable improvements over the currently running OS. It is expected to be based on Android 14 and may release in early 2024. However, the company has not yet confirmed a launch timeline for the Nothing OS 3.

Nothing Phone 2 Gets Its First Update With Several Camera Improvements, Design-Related Features

Nothing Phone 2 is yet to go on sale in India, but the technology company has already released the smartphone’s first update, which brings new features, plenty of improvements and several bug fixes. While most users in India will get to experience this update only after they receive their units, there are others who have got access to the Phone 2 from Nothing via pop-up stores worldwide. Regardless, there’s also design-related features that have been added even though this update seems to be primarily focussed on the phone’s cameras.

Our Nothing Phone 2 review unit at Gadgets 360 has received the Nothing OS 2.0.1 update as an over-the-air (OTA) update. The update is 105MB in size. Starting off with the new features, Nothing first states in its changelog that its Glyph Composer is finally available on the Google Play Store, that lets users create and record new ringtones. Also added as a design feature is the Glyph Progress bar for the Uber app. One of the indicators on the rear panel that is used as a progress bar will now indicate the time taken for an incoming Uber ride to arrive.

Design-related features aside, there’s now new widgets, which can be added to the lock screen using the always-on display (AOD). Users can also add their most used Quick Settings widgets/tiles to the home or lock screen. The update also brings new and reworked ringtones and notification sounds from the Nothing Phone 1. These have been tweaked to suit the more segmented layout of the Glyph lighting system of the Phone 2. Also added is a one-handed mode.

The Nothing OS 2.0.1 update brings several camera-related improvements to the Nothing Phone 2. With the update, the camera’s Portrait mode now supports 2x zoom for close-up shots. Motion capture is now supported in the 50-megapixel high resolution camera mode and HDR now works more effectively. Meanwhile, the clarity of photos captured between 4x and 10x zoom has also been improved, as per the changelog. The camera’s performance when used with third-party apps is also said to be better with Nothing OS 2.0.1. Videos are said to offer better stabilisation among other improvements.

Nothing has also worked on the Phone 2’s battery life and charging performance, which also included tweaks to wireless charging and Battery share. Bugs with Quick Settings have been resolved and the same applies for the NFC system. There’s improved network stability among other general bug fixes with the Nothing OS 2.0.1 update.

The Nothing Phone 2 will go on sale in India on July 21 via Flipkart. Do have a look at our first impressions of the new Nothing phone, which can be read here.

Nothing Phone 2 Design Revealed Officially Ahead of July 11 Launch

Nothing Phone 2 is all set to be launched on July 11 as a follow-up to last year’s Phone 1. In the build-up to its imminent arrival, the Carl Pei-led UK brand has unveiled the first official look of the flagship handset. The official render suggests white and grey colour options for the Nothing Phone 2 with a new Glyph Interface. The overall design appears to follow in the footsteps of the Nothing Phone 1. The Nothing Phone 2 is confirmed to run on Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC and will go on sale in India via Flipkart.

Nothing on Tuesday unveiled the official look of its upcoming Nothing Phone 2 via Twitter. As mentioned, the handset is seen in white and dark grey colourways with a transparent rear case and curved edges. The image shared by the brand shows a similar design to its predecessor Nothing Phone 1 that was launched in July last year. The Glyph Interface seems to have a few notable upgrades with slightly tweaked LED lighting.

Ring-like camera module housing dual rear cameras are seen arranged in the upper left corner of the Nothing Phone 2. Further, the volume rockers are seen on the right spine of the smartphone, while the power button is arranged on the left spine.

The Nothing Phone 2 will be launched in global markets including India on July 11.
