iPhone 15 Pro Max Price Bump Part of Apple’s Revenue-Boosting Strategy: Mark Gurman

Apple enacted its long-awaited iPhone price increase with as much subtlety as possible, part of an effort to wring more money from consumers without triggering sticker shock.

On Tuesday, the company boosted the price of just one iPhone model — the top-end Pro Max, which climbs by $100 (roughly Rs. 8,300) to $1,199 (roughly Rs. 99,400) — while leaving the other three new versions unchanged. And even the now-costlier new phone will come with twice as much storage, letting Apple argue that it wasn’t really a price increase at all.

The move fits a pattern for the company, which needs to tread lightly with inflation-wary shoppers. Apple isn’t making dramatic changes to its sticker prices, but it’s finding new ways for shoppers to spend more. The company is packing its upscale iPhones with exclusive features, such as better zoom lenses and titanium frames, to nudge shoppers toward bigger-ticket items.

Even Apple’s switch to a USB-C port on the iPhone — an EU-mandated move the company initially opposed — will bring fresh ways to generate revenue. If consumers want their AirPods to have the same connector as the latest iPhones, they’ll have to spend $249 (roughly Rs. 20,700) for a new pair. If they want to use their old Lightning chargers, they can buy an adapter from Apple for $29 (roughly Rs. 2,400).

Some investors had hoped that Apple would raise prices more broadly, one reason they gave a cool reaction to Apple’s iPhone event Tuesday, according to Evercore ISI analyst Amit Daryanani. The shares slipped 1.7 percent to $176.30 (roughly Rs. 14,600).

But Apple is contending with an industrywide smartphone slump, giving it less leverage to increase prices. Worldwide smartphone shipments fell nearly 7 percent last quarter, according to IDC, hitting the company’s biggest source of revenue. Troubles in China, where it faces a widening government ban and competition with an advanced new phone from Huawei Technologies, have only added to the pressure.

And so, Apple will keep the lower-end version of the iPhone 15 at $799 (roughly Rs. 66,300), while the entry-level Pro model remains at $999 (roughly Rs. 82,900) — a price that was considered eye-popping when the iPhone X debuted at that level in 2017.

Though the starting Pro Max will be nearly 10 percent more expensive than the cheapest iPhone 14 Pro Max, it has 256 gigabytes of storage, compared with the 128 gigabytes offered previously.

Underscoring the incremental nature of this price increase, Apple didn’t raise the levels of its iPhone 15 Pro Max models with higher amounts of storage. The version with 512 gigabytes remains at $1,399 (roughly Rs. 1,16,000), while one with 1 terabyte still costs $1,599 (roughly Rs. 1,32,600). But even with prices staying the same, Apple is able to earn higher margins because the cost of storage has fallen.

Apple is boosting prices more aggressively outside the US. The iPhone 15 Pro will rise by $50 (roughly Rs. 4,100) in Canada, with the Pro Max price going up $200 (roughly Rs. 16,600). In India, the Pro Max will climb by about 14 percent.

Some countries, however, are getting a price decrease. In the UK, the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are 100 pounds (roughly Rs. 10,400) cheaper than their predecessors.

Beyond iPhone pricing tweaks, Apple is generating more revenue from additional services and accessories. The company rolled out two new storage tiers for its iCloud online storage offering: a 6-terabyte plan for $30 (roughly Rs. 2,500) a month and a 12-terabyte option for $60 (roughly Rs. 5,000) a month. The top-end iCloud plan had been a 2-terabyte offering for $10 (roughly Rs. 800).

The new AirPods also reflect Apple’s more aggressive approach. When the company began offering wireless charging on the iPhone, it let AirPods customers purchase new cases that used the same format — rather than forcing them to buy all new earbuds. This time around, it’s not offering a standalone case that works with USB-C.

Buyers of the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max also will need a new cable if they want to get the speedier data transfer speeds promised by the device. Apple is selling one for $69 (roughly Rs. 5,700).

iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max Price Hike Won’t Bring Upgrade From 128GB Base Storage Configuration: Report

iPhone 15 Pro Max is expected to bring some notable changes over last year’s top-of-the-line model — in terms of build quality and hardware improvements — along with a hefty price hike, but the base storage configuration of the handset won’t be raised by the company, according to a report. Due to the rumoured use of titanium instead of stainless steel for the external chassis of the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro Max model, the price of Apple’s upcoming phone is expected to increase this year.

According to a report by 9to5Mac citing a research note from analysts at TrendForce, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are expected to arrive with 128GB of storage. While the Pro model is rumoured to be priced at $999 (roughly Rs. 83,100), the market research firm claims the price of the iPhone Pro Max will be hiked by 9 percent and start at $1,199 (roughly Rs. 99,700) or an increase of $100 (roughly Rs. 8,300) over the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Last month, it was reported that prices for both Pro models would increase this year, while they would offer between 256GB and 2TB of storage. However, TrendForce states that both the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will offer up to 1TB of storage, just like their predecessors. Instead, they will reportedly feature 8GB of RAM, up from 6GB on last year’s Pro models.

Apple has already confirmed the date of its next launch event — the company is expected to unveil the iPhone 15 series of smartphones, new Apple Watch models, and a refreshed version of the AirPods Pro at its ‘Wonderlust’ event on September 12.

This year, the company is rumoured to equip its next generation of smartphones with USB Type-C ports for the first time, with reports suggesting they could offer Thunderbolt/ USB 4 support and faster charging at up to 35W. The iPhone 15 Pro models are expected to feature a cutting edge A17 Bionic chipset, and an Action button that is said to be programmable.

The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are said to feature a titanium chassis which suggests the phone will be more durable and lighter than previous models that were made from stainless steel. Another major upgrade rumoured to make its way to the Pro Max model is a new periscope camera that will offer better optical zoom performance. We will find out more about Apple’s upcoming smartphones when the company unveils them at its ‘Wonderlust’ event on September 12.

iPhone 15 Pro Models May Cost Up to $200 More Than iPhone 14 Pro Variants: Report

iPhone 15 family— including the vanilla iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max — could be unveiled sometime in September. This year, the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models are anticipated to be more expensive than the previous Pro models, and a new claim by a Barclays analyst corroborates this rumour. The vanilla iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will have the same price tag as the outgoing models. The iPhone 15 Pro is said to get new cameras and a faster chipset compared to the non-Pro models.

As reported by MacRumors, Barclays analyst Tim Long mentioned in an investor note that iPhone 15 Pro models will come with a higher price tag than the ongoing iPhone 14 Pro models this year. The iPhone 15 Pro will reportedly cost up to $100 (roughly Rs. 8,000) more than the iPhone 14 Pro, whereas the iPhone 15 Pro Max could see a price hike of $100 to $200 (roughly Rs. 16,000) more than the iPhone 14 Pro Max. The analyst states that the pricing would remain similar for the standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models.

In the US, the iPhone 14 Pro was launched at $999 (roughly Rs. 79,555), while the iPhone 14 Pro Max, currently the most expensive iPhone model on the market, was priced at $1,099 (roughly Rs. 87,530). Based on Tim Long’s estimate, the iPhone 15 Pro would start at $1,099, while iPhone 15 Pro Max is expected to have an initial price tag of $1,199 (roughly Rs. 98,000) or even $1,299 (roughly Rs. 1,06,864).

The vanilla iPhone 14 was announced with a starting price tag of $799 (roughly Rs. 63,700) and the iPhone 14 Plus starts at $899 (roughly Rs. 71,600).

Analyst Jeff Pu earlier in July claimed that the iPhone 15 Pro Max model will be priced higher than the existing iPhone 14 Pro Max. The increased cost can be attributed to several rumoured hardware upgrades including a fresh periscope lens, titanium frames, solid-state buttons with haptic feedback, USB Type-C charging ports, a brand-new A17 Bionic chip, and increased RAM.

A Bloomberg report earlier this week also reiterated that the iPhone 15 could have a higher price tag than the ongoing models. Apple is allegedly planning to hike the price of 2023 iPhone models to increase revenue. The company has reportedly set a target to produce around 85 million iPhone 15 units this year.

iPhone 15 Pro Max to Be More Expensive Than iPhone 14 Pro Max: Jeff Pu

iPhone 15 Pro Max, also expected to launch with the moniker iPhone 15 Ultra, is said to debut later this year alongside the other purported iPhone 15 series models. The phone is said to succeed the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Several leaks and reports about the upcoming series have suggested that the lineup models are likely to offer bigger displays, batteries and have significantly better cameras than its preceding models. Apple Analyst Jeff Pu now says that the iPhone 15 Pro Max will be priced higher than its series 14 counterpart.

A MacRumors report quotes Apple analyst Jeff Pu saying that the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro Max will be offered at a higher price than its preceding handset at the time of launch. Pu earlier claimed that the all the iPhone 15 Pro models will be priced higher, however he has now only singled out the Pro Max model. The analyst reportedly did not specify a reason for this increment, but certain previous leaks can possibly hint at the explanation.

The model has been tipped previously to carry a larger battery than the one iPhone 14 Pro Max. The iPhone 15 series’s Pro Max model is said to carry a 4,852mAh battery, which is bigger than the 4,323mAh battery which its predecessor carries. The upcoming flagship Apple handset has also been reported to likely sport a 6.9-inch display. The iPhone 14 Pro Max comes with a 6.7‑inch Super Retina XDR OLED panel.

The high-end series 14 model features a triple rear camera unit which includes a 48-megapixel sensor with a wide-angle lens and an aperture of f/1.78 alongside support for Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS), a 12-megapixel sensor also with an ultra-wide lens and another 12-megapixel sensor paired with a telephoto lens. Reports have suggested that the iPhone 15 Pro Max will offer better, higher-quality cameras.

An earlier leak claimed that the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro Max handset will rework the rear camera setup to accommodate a periscope lens, which the phone has been speculated to carry. This lens could offer zooming capabilities of up to 6 times, which is claimed to ensure zoomed-in photographs without distortion or image quality loss.

In India, the iPhone 14 Pro Max started at Rs. 1,39,900 for the 128GB storage model during its launch. The 256GB storage variant is priced in the country at Rs. 1,49,900, while the 512GB storage option is available at Rs. 1,69,900. The highest storage variant of 1TB is offered at Rs. 1,89,900. The model is available in four colour options — Deep Purple, Gold, Silver, and Space Black.
