Samsung Rolls Out One UI 5 Beta 3 Seemingly Cloning iOS 16 Lock Screen

Samsung has seemingly rolled out the One UI 5 beta 3 this week. The update brings themed-icon support for third-party apps, snappier animations, and more. However, the standout feature appears to be the new customisation options for the lock screen that appears to follow the same approach as the options featured in Apple’s iOS 16. The new Lock Screen in iOS 16 was presumably one of the most talked about features of this operating system when it was released earlier this month.

According to a tweet by Vaibhav Jain (@vvaiibhav) from the TechDroider YouTube channel, Samsung has purportedly cloned iOS 16‘s Lock Screen feature with the One UI 5 beta 3 update. Long-pressing the screen takes users to the customisation interface which appears very similar to the layout offered in iOS 16.

Here, Samsung users can pick from five different clock styles, compared to the eight offered on iOS 16. There are also options to change the clock colour and font style. Similarly, while selecting wallpapers, both systems offer a ‘Collection’ of backgrounds with a similar layout.

However, Jain and other Twitter users were quick to point out that these features were already available on the Good Lock app for Samsung. They speculate that it was Apple who initially cloned the layout. Apple fans claim that Samsung only decided to offer these features natively after iOS 16 was released with the Lock Screen.

Samsung recently began the One UI 5.0 beta registrations for the Galaxy S21 series in India. Reportedly, the Galaxy S22 series had already started receiving One UI 5.0 beta updates in August. All these developments could mean that Samsung might release the official stable One UI 5.0 build in the coming days.

iOS 16 ‘Mailjack’ Bug Causes Mail App to Crash Upon Receiving Maliciously Crafted Email: All Details

An iOS 16 bug is reportedly causing the Mail application on iPhone and iPad models that have been updated to the latest version of Apple’s operating system to crash, rendering it inaccessible. The bug comes in the form of an otherwise routine-looking mail message, that has an unusual sender field that includes extra characters that causes the Mail application to crash on iOS 16. The bug has been dubbed “Mailjack” and allows any outsider to lock iPhone and iPad users out of their email accounts with a modified email.

The crash-triggering email was identified by Equinux’s VPN Tracker. Generally, the “From” field has the sender’s name followed by their email address in the syntax — From: sender@example.com. However, the crash-triggering email had the from field syntax as — From: “”@example.com. Mail services like Gmail, Outlook, and Hotmail automatically rewrite such inbound emails with unusual syntax to prevent such triggers.

While Gmail and Yahoo have filters in place to block these maliciously crafted emails altogether, Apple’s first-party iCloud Mail does not appear to have any such rewriting or filtering mechanisms in place, as per the report.

The current solution to avoiding the trigger is to delete the message from the inbox or spam folder from a device that is running an older iOS version or via an external email client. Users may also choose to move the trigger email to another subfolder on an IMAP email account. However, navigating to the respective subfolder will cause the application to crash again according to the website. Admins may also choose to add the syntax “”@example.com to their list of blocked emails via email security software or firewall.

Equinux’s VPN Tracker has created a dedicated webpage where users can test the bug trigger by entering their email address. However, users are advised not to try this as it could lock them out of their emails unless they have access to an older iOS or external email client to delete the triggering message.

Shop the new earbuds now

It seems like no matter where you look, people are wearing Apple AirPods and if they’re not, the popular earbuds are most likely on their wish list.

If you’re a big fan of Apple headphones, we’ve got exciting news for you — the all new, second generation Apple AirPods Pro are here and available to be purchased on Amazon while supplies last. Whether you’re looking to upgrade your old AirPods or finally want to splurge on the popular earbuds, there is no time like the present!

For more details on all the new Apple AirPods Pro, keep reading.

Amazon

While the first generation and second generation look fairly similar, the upgrades on the newly launched model are worth raving over.

Transparency mode actually works

When you’re not in noise-cancellation mode, you can opt for what Apple calls “transparency mode” — when you press and hold the stem of your AirPods and sound escapes. This gives you the option to listen to audio without being completely blocked out from the world.

While using the first generation transparency mode, it was sometimes too good and would still block out sound — making you take out one earbud when you wanted to talk with someone. With the new generation Pros you can use transparency mode and have clear conversations without messing with your headphones.

Noise cancellation is even better

According to Apple, the new-generation AirPods Pro deliver up to double the noise cancellation thanks to the H2 chip. Whats even cooler about this model is that you can even view noise level reduction in real time.

Control the volume directly

The second generation allows touch control which gives you the opportunity to raise or lower the volume of your audio simply by swiping up or down on the stem of your AirPods.

Convenient charging and better battery life

If you’re an Apple Watch user, we’ve got great news for you. The second generation AirPods Pro has a MagSafe charging case, allowing you to charge your earbuds on your Apple Watch charger or the regular charging cable. Talk about convenience!

Plus, the battery life has improved by 33% compared to the first generation Apple AirPods Pro and gets you 30 hours of total listening time with active noise cancellation is on. That’s six more hours than you’d be getting with the new generation!

Say goodbye to lost AirPods

The best part about the new generation might be the fact that you can now track your earbuds using the Find My app. With the new U1 chip, you can see the exact location of where you last left your AirPods. Pretty nifty if you ask us.

new AirPods case also comes with a new U1 chip, so you can use the Find My app to see the exact location of where you last left your AirPods.

Audio quality is better than ever before

Apple is offering even smaller ear tips, making it nearly impossible for them to fall out. Plus, the brand created a new feature called “personalized spatial audio.” Take advantage of this by using your iPhone’s front-facing camera, so your phone can remember the size of your ears and help ensure the sounds you’re hearing are tailored to your individual ear size.

Spatial audio gives you a three-dimensional listening experience from music, TV shows, movies, podcasts and more — immersing you in sounds from every direction. The idea is to give the user a theater-like experience so you can feel like you’re in your very own concert hall.

iPhone 14 Pro Max Charging Speed Capped at 27W, Required Time With Various Chargers Revealed: Report

Apple 14 Pro Max was recently subjected to a battery test by a Chinese publication and they have published the results of the test. The test, which included multiple Apple chargers, hints at the time taken by a particular charging brick to fully charge the top-of-the-line handset, as well as the maximum speed of charging achieved by each wall block. It is to be noted that unlike Android smartphone makers, Apple doesn’t reveal the battery capacity of its handsets or the time its chargers take to fully charge the company’s handsets.

In a recent test conducted by Chinese publication Chongdiantou, the iPhone 14 Pro Max was charged with different chargers available in the market. These included Apple’s older 5W charger, the 18W charger which was bundled with iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max, the 30W charger available with 2020 smartphones, a 96W charger that comes with the 2019 MacBook Pro, and the 140W charger that ships with the 2021 MacBook Pro.

Before going straight into the results of the tests, let’s have a look at the battery capacity of each smartphone in the iPhone 14 lineup. A report recently suggested that the iPhone 14 packs a 3,279mAh battery, the iPhone 14 Plus packs a 4,325mAh battery, the iPhone 14 Pro gets a 3,200mAh battery, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max comes with a 4,323mAh battery. The tests were conducted with the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Apart from 18W and 20W chargers, which are restricted to their peak output, all the other bricks offer a maximum charging speed of 27W, the test revealed. This implies that in order to get the maximum charging speeds, iPhone 14 buyers should charge their phones with Apple’s 30W USB Type-C power adapter.

The report mentioned above also claims that last year’s top-of-the-line offering, the iPhone 13 Pro Max, packs a 4,352mAh battery. This is around the same battery capacity as this year’s offering. When it comes to the charging time, the publication based its calculations on the performance of last year’s top-end model with the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

The 30W charger fully charges the iPhone 13 Pro Max in 2 hours and 9 minutes, according to the report. It also mentions that the Apple 96W PD charger takes an hour and 49 minutes to fully charge the top model indicating a 20-minute difference between them. The publication indicates that the iPhone 14 Pro Max should take a similar amount of time to be fully charged by these power bricks.

iPhone 14 Satellite Connectivity Feature May Launch Outside the US, Canada This Year: Report

iPhone 14 series’ satellite connectivity feature that lets you send an SOS message when you do not have cellular network may be coming to countries other than Canada and the US, as per a report. The feature is due to come to these countries in November, Apple announced at the ‘Far Out’ event, which saw the debut of the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max. The feature is free for the first two years.

As per a report by macprime, the iPhone 14 models’ limited form of satellite connectivity which, when rolled out in November, will allow users to send an SOS message when they do not have cellular connectivity, may be rolled out to other countries. However, there is no information on which countries will get this feature. This is one of the five features we think is great when it comes to saving precious human lives.

iPhone 14 Satellite Connectivity

If you are a hiker lost in the woods or if you sustain an injury that renders you unable to move, you can, in theory, use your iPhone 14 to send an SOS message over a satellite and it could help in your rescue. “Satellites are moving targets with low bandwidth. It can take minutes for messages to get through. Since every second counts, iPhone front-loads a few questions to assess your situation — just tap to respond. Then it shows you where to point to connect to a satellite,” Apple explains.

In order to send an SOS message, the sender must be outdoors with a clear view of the sky. Since satellites are moving rapidly through space, iPhone 14 will assist the sender where to point to maintain your connection — and avoid obstructions such as mountains and heavy foliage. Apple says that in ideal conditions, the message can be sent in less than 15 seconds. Under light foliage, it can take more than a minute. Once connected, the iPhone 14 will automatically send your answers, location, Medical ID (if set up) as well as battery level to a dispatcher.

While researching and writing about this feature previously, we talked to Tarun Pathak from Counterpoint Research. He explained that the feature will be a good thing to have from a user’s point of view “especially in India where it can bring in meaningful developments.” He rightly points that even though the feature is great, operational challenges need to be addressed. “What [happens] after SOS communication is done? Do we have a response team as fast as we have in other countries?,” Pathak told Gadgets 360, while explaining the feasibility of the feature in India.

Apple partnered with Globalstar to support this emergency feature in the new iPhone 14 series. The Cupertino company revealed that it would be allocating $450 million (roughly Rs. 4,000 crores) from its advanced manufacturing fund to support this new feature.

iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max Demand High; iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus Struggle: Ming-Chi Kuo

iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max seem to have better demand as compared to the non-Pro models, TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has said based on an investigation of pre-orders. He termed the demand for iPhone 14 series as neutral for Apple. The recently-launched flagship smartphones from the Cupertino-based company are available globally for pre-orders since last week, including in India, and are set to go on sale starting September 16. Meanwhile, the iPhone 14 Plus will be available for purchase on October 7.

Alongside his overall analysis of the demand for the iPhone 14 series, Kuo also provided details by sharing information on model-by-model basis. Starting with the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, he states that pre-order trends reflect sluggish demand for the non-Pro models. “For now, the pre-order results for the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus are worse than those for the iPhone SE (2022) and iPhone 13 mini,” he explains.

Furthermore, shorter delivery times for iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Plus models (compared to iPhone 13/13 mini), and that the models will be in stock on launch day reflect sluggish demand for the non-Pro iPhone options, according to Kuo. The pre-order results of the iPhone 14 Plus, which is seemingly a replacement for the iPhone 13 mini, suggest that the demand of this new product is significantly lower than expected. “It means that Apple’s product segmentation strategy for standard models this year has failed,” the analyst notes.

Coming to the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max, Kuo says that the delivery times of more than 4 weeks of these models might reflect good demand. The delivery times of the iPhone 14 Pro Max and the iPhone 14 Pro are about 6 weeks and 5 weeks, respectively. As per Kuo, the iPhone 14 Pro Max pre-order is better as compared to the iPhone 13 Pro Max.

“Undoubtedly, the pre-order results for the Pro models once again prove that Apple still has many loyal and sticky customers despite the deteriorating economy,” Kuo added. The analyst also gave a forecast on how things could change in the future for Apple. Kuo says if the demand for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus doesn’t improve after launch, Apple could cut its shipment forecasts for November and beyond for the models within a few weeks.

It is to be noted that Apple is reported to manufacture some iPhone 14 series models in India and the first batch of iPhone 14 from India is likely to be finished in late October or November. It is currently unknown whether there will be an impact on iPhone 14 models that are said to be manufactured in India.

Furthermore, a positive outlook presented by pre-order of Pro models does not mean that Apple will immediately increase orders for the Pro models, as per the analyst. “Whether Apple will increase Pro orders depends on how long the strong demand for Pro models lasts during a recession. It is unclear whether Apple will increase its shipment forecast for the Pro model, but the possibility of iPhone 14 and 14 Plus (accounting for about 45 percent of overall iPhone 14 shipments) is increasing,” Kuo noted.

Additionally, the strong demand for the iPhone 14 Pro models is said to continue through at least November. “But assuming Apple doesn’t increase orders for the iPhone Pro after that, in which case the potential iPhone 14 and 14 Plus cuts could offset Apple’s gains in late 4Q22 or 1Q23 due to a better iPhone product mix (iPhone ASP boost),” he claimed.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max Could Be Renamed to iPhone 15 Ultra: Mark Gurman

iPhone 14 series has four models — iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max. However, this nomenclature may change from next year onwards. Two industry analysts have suggested that Apple may rename the top-of-the-line iPhone 15, which is presumed to carry iPhone 15 Pro Max moniker, as iPhone 15 Ultra. While one says renaming “would better match Apple’s newest naming strategy”, other says it could help the Cupertino-based company to “increase Pro shipment allocation and the new iPhone ASP.”

The first mention of the iPhone 15 Ultra was last week after Apple launched the iPhone 14 series. Analyst Mark Gurman said that it would make sense for Apple to eventually rename its top-end phone from “Pro Max” to “Ultra.” He suggested that renaming would be a lot simpler and “would better match Apple’s newest naming strategy” as reported in the company’s M1 Pro, M1 Max, and M1 Ultra Mac chips.

A day later, another noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo tweeted saying that he believes Apple will create more differentiation between iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 standard models “to increase Pro shipment allocation and the new iPhone ASP.”

“Taking a step further, Apple will also start creating differentiation between the iPhone 15 Pro Max and the iPhone 15 Pro. It’s the best practice via a precise product segmentation strategy to generate more sales/profits in a mature market,” Ming-Chi Kuo tweeted. By “start creating differentiation”, Kuo might have implied that Apple might start offering exclusive features in the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

It is to be noted that Apple currently segregates its phones as non-pro and Pro iPhone models. While this year’s Pro models got a design change on the front and in the cameras, the non-Pro models come with iterative upgrades over the iPhone 13 series.

iPhone 14 Series Features Upgraded HDR Gyroscope, 256G Accelerometer for Crash Detection

iPhone 14 series, launched on Wednesday at the Apple’s ‘Far Out’ event, has been emphasised to have several life-saving features, including the much-talked-about emergency satellite services. Another such feature that has seemingly flown under the radar is its new Crash Detection system. Furthermore, all of the iPhone 14 series models are listed to feature upgraded components like a high dynamic range (HDR) gyroscope and a new high g‑force accelerometer. Apple has claimed that it used public crash data and real-world driving data to make this new feature perform as accurately as possible.

The iPhone 14 series, including the standard iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max, are listed to come with a new high g‑force accelerometer that is said to be capable of measuring accelerations and decelerations up to 256G.

The equipped HDR gyroscope can detect “drastic changes in a car’s orientation.” Furthermore, the barometer in iPhone 14 series handsets is programmed to detect pressure changes that might have been caused by the deployment of airbags.

Apple claims that, while you are driving, the microphone on the new iPhone 14 series monitors the sound levels to detect extreme sounds that are usually caused by collisions. The Cupertino company has assured users that all the sound detection processing is done on the iPhone to protect users’ privacy.

To ensure that the Crash Detection feature works accurately, Apple “developed advanced motion algorithms by performing head-on, rear-end, side-impact and rollover crash tests.” It has used public crash data from accidents as well. In total, this feature benefits from over 1 million hours of real-world driving data.

All of these new algorithms and handset components help the iPhone 14 series handsets in detecting severe car crashes. It then automatically contacts emergency services and your emergency contacts.
