HMD Just Teased Two Upcoming Self-Branded Smartphones to Be Announced in July This Year

After selling Nokia-branded smartphones for the past 7 years, HMD Global, recently announced that it would be taking the leap and launching some self-branded mobile devices in the coming months. The company at the announcement of its new HMD or Human Mobile Devices brand launch showed four pixelated images of upcoming devices to be announced in July this year, hinting that it has also partnered with Mattel to release a Barbie-branded feature phone as well. Now, a new teaser gives us our first glimpse at the two upcoming smartphones from the previously teased selection.

HMD via its official X (formerly Twitter) social media handle, pushed out one image of a slate-like smartphone finished in grey. The phone in the image is hidden partially in the pocket and under a shirt, but clearly reveals the new HMD logo. Also visible is the finish of the rear panel and the side frame. The phone in this image appears to have a matte-finished rear panel with a black frame and looks very similar to smartphone renders released in a previous report. This could be the N159V model that is expected to be a budget smartphone with a dual rear camera setup.

Another image leaked by Nokia Mob, shows another similar image of a phone inserted into a pocket, but with a different colour and noticeably different finish. The source claims that it could be a phone focussed on repairability, and states that it is similar to the N159V model that was leaked earlier. However, zooming into the image also shows the fineprint on the camera module that reads as “108” a 108-megapixel rear camera.

This phone is seen with a lustrous pink rear panel with a black rear camera module, and just like the officially teased image, it also proudly showcases the new HMD logo without revealing anything else. The pink phone seems similar to a previously leaked HMD device that also showed a 108-megapixel rear camera setup, but in a cyan finish.

Both images clearly state that these smartphones with a slate-like form factor will be launching in July this year. So we will have to wait and watch as more details about these upcoming smartphones are gradually teased or revealed.

Meanwhile, the lime green device from a pixelated launch revealing four devices, still remains a mystery. At the launch, HMD Global explained that the pink device (which clearly appears to be a smaller feature phone) will be a Barbie-branded flip phone that has been designed in partnership with toymaker Mattel. There aren’t too many details about the Barbie feature phone either, but it is expected to have a retro design and come in a distinctly recognisable pink finish.

HMD Reveals Rebranding Efforts at MWC 2024; Barbie Flip Phone to Debut Later This Year

HMD Global, the company known for its Nokia-branded phones, has announced its rebranding plans at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 event in Barcelona on Sunday (February 25). The Finnish mobile manufacturer has revealed that it will release a Barbie-branded flip phone later this year in partnership with Mattel. The company has also released an image suggesting a pink colour scheme for the upcoming retro feature phone. Further, HMD is eyeing to bring back another iconic Nokia phone design this year.

HMD, which stands for Human Mobile Devices, confirmed its rebranding efforts during MWC 2024 signaling a new direction for the company. The company that has exclusively sold phones under the Nokia brand name for the past seven years revealed its plans to launch smartphones bearing its own HMD name. It would follow a multi-brand strategy by making HMD original devices and continuing to sell Nokia phones. HMD says that it will make phones that are “affordable, beautiful, desirable, and repairable.”

The smartphone manufacturer confirmed plans to introduce a Barbie-branded flip phone in the summer this year in partnership with toy maker Mattel. The HMD has not revealed the design of the upcoming retro feature phone but gave us a glimpse at the pink finish. The company has also confirmed that it will bring back an “iconic Nokia phone” this summer. An HMD-branded smartphone will also see light in the same timeline.

HMD also aims to boost repairability and reduce the number of steps needed to fix a broken screen of the smartphone. Last year, the company launched the Nokia G22 in partnership with repair specialists iFixit. The handset includes replaceable parts and toolkits so that customers can fix their phones themselves.

Further, the brand expects half of the smartphone devices sold globally in 2024 to be repairable. Furthermore, HMD is launching a first version toolkit for developers and businesses with open design files and information on software integration.

HMD’s First Smartphone With Dual Rear Camera Setup, New Logo Surfaces in Leaked Renders

HMD Global is reportedly planning to launch a smartphone under its own brand name for the first time and a purported render of the handset has now surfaced online. Until now, the Finnish firm has been releasing smartphones under the Nokia brand, but the design of the handset with a new HMD logo on the rear panel suggests this could soon change. We now have a fair idea of what the handset could look like when it makes its debut.

91Mobiles has published an image of HMD’s purported N159V smartphone, sourced from unnamed industry sources. The handset is shown in a black colourway with a dual rear camera module with an LED flash. The HMD logo is visible in the centre of the phone’s rear panel and there’s no other branding visible anywhere on the handset.

While we still don’t know what HMD plans to call its first handset with the model number N159V, but the leaked image suggested that it will arrive as a midrange phone. The phone looks like it will be equipped with a plastic rear panel and the power and volume buttons appear to be located on the right side of the handset.

HMD’s first smartphone is shown to sport a flat display in the leaked renders. The render of the smartphone also suggests that it will be equipped with a front facing camera for selfies and video chats that is located in a centre-aligned hole punch cutout at the top of the screen. The render does not reveal whether the phone will be equipped with a 3.5mm audio jack at the top or the bottom of the phone.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of the company’s plans to launch HMD-branded devices. Last September, HMD Global CEO Jean-Francois Baril announced that the Finnish firm would soon expand its product portfolio with phones released under the HMD brand. The company has been marketing Nokia-branded phones globally since 2016.
