HMD Teases Return of an Iconic Feature Phone, Nokia 3210 Could Get a Remake

HMD is gearing up to launch a new handset sometime soon. The Finnish mobile manufacturer has now shared a teaser to offer hints about the arrival of a new phone in May without confirming the name. HMD Global is believed to unveil a refreshed model of the Nokia 3210. The brand which is best known for its Nokia-branded phones, announced late last year that it would launch its own branded phones in 2024 after exclusively offering Nokia phones. HMD Global has solely sold phones under the Nokia brand name for the past seven years.

On Monday, March 18, HMD on X announced that a new iconic phone will be unveiled in May. The brand also shared a pixelated image of a Nokia feature phone in a yellow shade with the tagline “An icon returns this May.” The post redirects to a landing page on the company website with the same announcement. Interested customers can enter their email addresses on the website to get the latest updates about the launch.

Since the X post was published on March 18, the 25th birthday of the Nokia 3210, this model is believed to make a comeback. HMD global also mentioned the birthday of the phone.

Meanwhile, HMD is eyeing to launch self-branded smartphones later this year in July. The company teased new handsets in February last week shortly after confirming its rebranding efforts during MWC 2024. It is confirmed to follow a multi-brand strategy by making HMD original devices and continuing to sell Nokia phones.

It is also gearing up to introduce a Barbie-branded flip phone in the summer this year in partnership with toy maker Mattel.

Nokia Foresees Boom in Network Demand Fuelled by Metaverse, Web3, AI Penetration

Finnish telecom major Nokia estimates that by 2030, the demand in Internet network will explode with advanced tech like Web3, Metaverse, and Artificial Intelligence taking centre stage. Nokia, moving forward, is planning strategies to make its equipment and services capable of handling the demand load. The company will be laying special focus on bringing its products and services to work in sync with smart contracts and blockchains to thrive in the upcoming era of decentralisation.

Nokia released its Technology Strategy 2030 report this week, outlining the direction it plans to take in the coming years as technology evolves and becomes more sophisticated. The telecom infrastructure provider estimates that the demand of network in the next seven years, is likely to rise by 22 percent to 25 percent.

“In the years ahead, networks will undergo significant evolution and must become cognitive and automated ecosystems capable of addressing the transformative needs and operating models of diverse organisations, industries and consumers. Advances in metaverse technologies, Web3, semiconductors, software, AI and Machine Learning (ML) will significantly extend the scope of what is possible, connecting and merging the human, physical and digital worlds to help solve some of the greatest global challenges we face,” the report says.

In the recent years, the network infrastructure available in present time has had to face several challenges especially related to security and cyber safety. Despite the downtimes and glitches however, the network providers did manage to push aforementioned technologies to the world. Nokia believes that stepping into the later years, network infrastructure providers will have to step up the game because technology is only going to grow more advanced.

Nokia has been exploring the field of metaverse since 2022 – when it reportedly kickstarted research work and studies exploring the industrial use cases of the metaverse tech. A fully functional virtual universe, the metaverse makes for a digital destination for people to socialise and work in as avatars – right from the comfort of their homes. The company has also managed to use the ‘digital twin technology’ to create a future network architecture compatible with advanced metaverse use cases and human augmentation. The digital twin technology is capable of twinning a virtual model of a physical object seamlessly.

Along with the metaverse, Nokia predicts that the deeper technologies like Generative AI and devices to access Virtual Reality (VR) penetrates, the more the demand for secure network escalate.

“Through networks that sense, think and act, we work with our customers and partners to create the digital services and applications of the future. Our products and solutions bring digitalisation to physical industries and cities, helping them decarbonise and increase efficiency, productivity and safety,” Nokia’s report noted.

HMD Just Teased Two Upcoming Self-Branded Smartphones to Be Announced in July This Year

After selling Nokia-branded smartphones for the past 7 years, HMD Global, recently announced that it would be taking the leap and launching some self-branded mobile devices in the coming months. The company at the announcement of its new HMD or Human Mobile Devices brand launch showed four pixelated images of upcoming devices to be announced in July this year, hinting that it has also partnered with Mattel to release a Barbie-branded feature phone as well. Now, a new teaser gives us our first glimpse at the two upcoming smartphones from the previously teased selection.

HMD via its official X (formerly Twitter) social media handle, pushed out one image of a slate-like smartphone finished in grey. The phone in the image is hidden partially in the pocket and under a shirt, but clearly reveals the new HMD logo. Also visible is the finish of the rear panel and the side frame. The phone in this image appears to have a matte-finished rear panel with a black frame and looks very similar to smartphone renders released in a previous report. This could be the N159V model that is expected to be a budget smartphone with a dual rear camera setup.

Another image leaked by Nokia Mob, shows another similar image of a phone inserted into a pocket, but with a different colour and noticeably different finish. The source claims that it could be a phone focussed on repairability, and states that it is similar to the N159V model that was leaked earlier. However, zooming into the image also shows the fineprint on the camera module that reads as “108” a 108-megapixel rear camera.

This phone is seen with a lustrous pink rear panel with a black rear camera module, and just like the officially teased image, it also proudly showcases the new HMD logo without revealing anything else. The pink phone seems similar to a previously leaked HMD device that also showed a 108-megapixel rear camera setup, but in a cyan finish.

Both images clearly state that these smartphones with a slate-like form factor will be launching in July this year. So we will have to wait and watch as more details about these upcoming smartphones are gradually teased or revealed.

Meanwhile, the lime green device from a pixelated launch revealing four devices, still remains a mystery. At the launch, HMD Global explained that the pink device (which clearly appears to be a smaller feature phone) will be a Barbie-branded flip phone that has been designed in partnership with toymaker Mattel. There aren’t too many details about the Barbie feature phone either, but it is expected to have a retro design and come in a distinctly recognisable pink finish.

New Nokia Smartphones Expected to Launch; Multiple Models Spotted on IMEI Database

HMD Global recently refreshed its online presence by dropping the Nokia branding from all spheres. Nokia.com is now redirected to HMD.com, and the X (formerly Twitter) handle of @nokiamobile has changed to @HMDglobal. The Finnish company was already expected to launch its products, including smartphones. This major transition led many to believe we would see only HMD-branded products hereon and no more Nokia items. But a report claims to have found new Nokia-branded smartphones listed on the IMEI website.

A GSMChina report claims to have spotted 17 new Nokia models on the IMEI website, with model numbers ranging from TA-1603 to TA-1628. All these models could be completely different; some could also have different RAM and storage variants of a particular model. The report adds that some of these models could even launch at the upcoming Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 in Barcelona, which is scheduled to be held from February 26 to February 29.

The report does not include any details about these purported smartphones other than the fact that they do indeed carry the Nokia branding. Notably, Nokia signed a 10-year deal with HMD Global in 2016, which is set to expire in 2026. Therefore, it is not a stretch to expect newer Nokia models to continue gracing the market until then. Although the models now spotted on the IMEI database will likely launch sooner than later, possibly within this year.

Recently, nine new HMD-branded handsets were reportedly spotted on the IMEI website. These could also all be different models, or some could be RAM and/or storage variants of a primary model. One HMD model with the codename N159V was recently leaked in a black colourway with a dual rear camera module with an LED flash. It was tipped to be a mid-range offering.

Another leak showed an HMD smartphone that is expected to launch in a blue colour option soon. It is seen with a 108-megapixel primary rear camera with optical image stabilisation (OIS) support placed within a rectangular camera module on the top left corner of the back panel. Nothing more is known of the model yet.

Will the Nothing Phone 2 serve as the successor to the Phone 1, or will the two co-exist? We discuss the company’s recently launched handset and more on the latest episode of Orbital, the Gadgets 360 podcast. Orbital is available on Spotify, Gaana, JioSaavn, Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music and wherever you get your podcasts.
