WhatsApp Communities to Get New Events Feature, Replies to Announcement Groups

WhatsApp is introducing a couple of new features for Communities that will allow members to participate in newer ways. Meta, the parent company of the instant messaging platform, announced on Wednesday that it is adding a new Events feature and allowing replies in the Announcement Groups to make Communities more interactive. Events will allow members of a group to create any event and other participants can then add if they’re going or not. Notably, WhatsApp is also reported to be working on a Recently Online feature that will list users who have logged into the app recently.

Announcing the features in a newsroom post, Meta said, “To help bring communities even closer together, we’re adding a new way for people to organize events on WhatsApp, and we’re introducing organized replies in Announcement Groups so members can respond to important updates from admins.” As per the company, Events can now be created by any group member whose group is part of a community. The option to create an event can be found by tapping the paper clip icon in the text field which also opens options for polls and payments.

These events can be for anything including a virtual meet-up or a birthday party. Once an event is created, other members can respond to it. They can open the event and confirm whether they will be attending it or not. Everyone can see who will be attending the event and who will not be.

The events can also be found on the group’s information page. Members who will be attending will get a notification when the event is close to remind them about it. For now, Events are exclusive to groups in Communities, but WhatsApp has said that it will be rolling out the feature to all groups over the coming months.

Another feature being introduced is replies to Announcement Groups. Every community in WhatsApp has a separate Announcements group which is accessible to all members even if they are added to just one of the groups but only the admins can post in it. It is normally used to post major announcements that are relevant to all members. WhatsApp is now allowing all members to reply to these messages.

This feature is designed to let admins get feedback from the community in a single space. These replies are grouped and minimised to avoid cluttering, and opening it opens a bottom slide that shows all the replies. Reply notifications are muted for everyone.

WhatsApp Working on Ability to React to Messages in Community Announcement Groups on iOS: Report

WhatsApp is reportedly working on the ability to react to messages in Community announcement groups. The Meta-owned messaging service has been spotted working on the capability on the latest beta version of WhatsApp for iOS. If the capability is rolled out, users will be able to react to messages that are in Community announcement groups using emoji. The app already lets users react to individual and group chat messages by selecting any message and then tapping on a row of preselected emoji or selecting other emoji supported by the application.

According to a report by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is working on a new feature for an upcoming iOS beta version that will let users instantly react to a message in Community announcement groups, just like regular group chats.

The feature tracker claims that the feature was not available for Community announcement group chats as it would reveal the user’s phone number to other Community members. However, the messaging service is reportedly working on the ability to hide users’ numbers when they react to messages.

WABetaInfo has also shared a screenshot of a Community announcement group chat that shows a banner that reads, “to view and send reactions in this chat update WhatsApp.”

However, it is worth noting that the feature is currently being developed by the company and could be released in a future beta update of WhatsApp for iOS.

Meanwhile, WhatsApp recently introduced the beta version of its native app for macOS. The native WhatsApp app for macOS has all the features available on the older Electron-based WhatsApp app for Mac computers. It is supported on Apple MacBook models with M1, M1 Pro, M1 Max, M1 Ultra, M2, ‌M2‌ Pro, and ‌M2‌ Max chipsets, along with other MacBook models running macOS 11 Big Sur, and users can the beta version of the app from the company’s website before it is rolled out to all users on the stable channel.

WhatsApp Android Beta With Feature to Create Communities Rolling Out: Report

WhatsApp is reportedly rolling out a new update for Android smartphones that offers the ability to create communities. The feature is said to be available to a limited number of beta testers at the moment. The Meta-owned communication platform was previously spotted working on a communities tab. This upcoming feature is said to allow WhatsApp users to create ‘communities’ that can host up to 10 sub-groups with up to 512 participants in each sub-group.

According to a report by WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, the WhatsApp for Android beta version 2.22.19.3 brings the ability to create a community. This feature is currently available to a limited number of beta testers, as per the report.

This update reportedly replaces the camera tab on the top left corner of the app with the communities tab. This tab is said to allow users to create a community with up to 10 sub-groups, according to the feature tracker, while a sub-group is said to be capable of supporting up to 512 participants.

The report further mentions that community members can select a sub-group of their choosing when they join a new community. They are reportedly also allowed to leave sub-groups without leaving the community. Community admins are understood to have the ability to disable a community. This update reportedly also allows members to report a community to WhatsApp.

WhatsApp reportedly automatically creates an announcement group when a user creates a new community. This group can purportedly be used by community admins to share messages that are always visible to all members of the community.

WhatsApp for Android beta version 2.22.19.2 is reportedly also compatible with the communities feature. However, users are said to be capable of joining communities if the feature is enabled for their accounts. Even after installing the compatible updates, users might not be able to join communities even after being added by a community admin, according to WABetaInfo.

As per a recent report, WhatsApp is also working on a feature that would allow users to hide their phone numbers from specific WhatsApp sub-groups of a community, via a setting that is expected to be available once the feature is rolled out to all users.
