HMD Teases Return of an Iconic Feature Phone, Nokia 3210 Could Get a Remake

HMD is gearing up to launch a new handset sometime soon. The Finnish mobile manufacturer has now shared a teaser to offer hints about the arrival of a new phone in May without confirming the name. HMD Global is believed to unveil a refreshed model of the Nokia 3210. The brand which is best known for its Nokia-branded phones, announced late last year that it would launch its own branded phones in 2024 after exclusively offering Nokia phones. HMD Global has solely sold phones under the Nokia brand name for the past seven years.

On Monday, March 18, HMD on X announced that a new iconic phone will be unveiled in May. The brand also shared a pixelated image of a Nokia feature phone in a yellow shade with the tagline “An icon returns this May.” The post redirects to a landing page on the company website with the same announcement. Interested customers can enter their email addresses on the website to get the latest updates about the launch.

Since the X post was published on March 18, the 25th birthday of the Nokia 3210, this model is believed to make a comeback. HMD global also mentioned the birthday of the phone.

Meanwhile, HMD is eyeing to launch self-branded smartphones later this year in July. The company teased new handsets in February last week shortly after confirming its rebranding efforts during MWC 2024. It is confirmed to follow a multi-brand strategy by making HMD original devices and continuing to sell Nokia phones.

It is also gearing up to introduce a Barbie-branded flip phone in the summer this year in partnership with toy maker Mattel.

HMD Reveals Rebranding Efforts at MWC 2024; Barbie Flip Phone to Debut Later This Year

HMD Global, the company known for its Nokia-branded phones, has announced its rebranding plans at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 event in Barcelona on Sunday (February 25). The Finnish mobile manufacturer has revealed that it will release a Barbie-branded flip phone later this year in partnership with Mattel. The company has also released an image suggesting a pink colour scheme for the upcoming retro feature phone. Further, HMD is eyeing to bring back another iconic Nokia phone design this year.

HMD, which stands for Human Mobile Devices, confirmed its rebranding efforts during MWC 2024 signaling a new direction for the company. The company that has exclusively sold phones under the Nokia brand name for the past seven years revealed its plans to launch smartphones bearing its own HMD name. It would follow a multi-brand strategy by making HMD original devices and continuing to sell Nokia phones. HMD says that it will make phones that are “affordable, beautiful, desirable, and repairable.”

The smartphone manufacturer confirmed plans to introduce a Barbie-branded flip phone in the summer this year in partnership with toy maker Mattel. The HMD has not revealed the design of the upcoming retro feature phone but gave us a glimpse at the pink finish. The company has also confirmed that it will bring back an “iconic Nokia phone” this summer. An HMD-branded smartphone will also see light in the same timeline.

HMD also aims to boost repairability and reduce the number of steps needed to fix a broken screen of the smartphone. Last year, the company launched the Nokia G22 in partnership with repair specialists iFixit. The handset includes replaceable parts and toolkits so that customers can fix their phones themselves.

Further, the brand expects half of the smartphone devices sold globally in 2024 to be repairable. Furthermore, HMD is launching a first version toolkit for developers and businesses with open design files and information on software integration.

New Nokia Smartphones Expected to Launch; Multiple Models Spotted on IMEI Database

HMD Global recently refreshed its online presence by dropping the Nokia branding from all spheres. Nokia.com is now redirected to HMD.com, and the X (formerly Twitter) handle of @nokiamobile has changed to @HMDglobal. The Finnish company was already expected to launch its products, including smartphones. This major transition led many to believe we would see only HMD-branded products hereon and no more Nokia items. But a report claims to have found new Nokia-branded smartphones listed on the IMEI website.

A GSMChina report claims to have spotted 17 new Nokia models on the IMEI website, with model numbers ranging from TA-1603 to TA-1628. All these models could be completely different; some could also have different RAM and storage variants of a particular model. The report adds that some of these models could even launch at the upcoming Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 in Barcelona, which is scheduled to be held from February 26 to February 29.

The report does not include any details about these purported smartphones other than the fact that they do indeed carry the Nokia branding. Notably, Nokia signed a 10-year deal with HMD Global in 2016, which is set to expire in 2026. Therefore, it is not a stretch to expect newer Nokia models to continue gracing the market until then. Although the models now spotted on the IMEI database will likely launch sooner than later, possibly within this year.

Recently, nine new HMD-branded handsets were reportedly spotted on the IMEI website. These could also all be different models, or some could be RAM and/or storage variants of a primary model. One HMD model with the codename N159V was recently leaked in a black colourway with a dual rear camera module with an LED flash. It was tipped to be a mid-range offering.

Another leak showed an HMD smartphone that is expected to launch in a blue colour option soon. It is seen with a 108-megapixel primary rear camera with optical image stabilisation (OIS) support placed within a rectangular camera module on the top left corner of the back panel. Nothing more is known of the model yet.

Will the Nothing Phone 2 serve as the successor to the Phone 1, or will the two co-exist? We discuss the company’s recently launched handset and more on the latest episode of Orbital, the Gadgets 360 podcast. Orbital is available on Spotify, Gaana, JioSaavn, Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music and wherever you get your podcasts.

Nokia-Parent HMD Global Starts Manufacturing 5G Devices in Europe

HMD Global, the licensee of Nokia-branded smartphones, has become the first major smartphone company to manufacture devices in Europe, with its first 5G model made in Hungary — aimed at customers keen on data security — now available for purchase.

“We are thrilled to be manufacturing the Nokia XR21, our signature rugged 5G smartphone, in Europe,” HMD Global co-founder, chairman and CEO Jean-Francois Baril said on Tuesday.

“We are dedicated to investing in security, technology and manufacturing processes that make our devices more secure and longer lasting.”

Before HMD opened its Hungarian operations, Europe had no large-scale smartphone manufacturing as major companies like Apple and Samsung make their phones in Asia to cut costs.

HMD said the first European model was designed for enterprise customers, some of whom had requested additional security in conjunction with their IT security partners.

The company already stores data in the European Union, with consumer and corporate data from all of its smartphones held and processed on servers in Finland since 2019.

The company signed in 2016 an exclusive 10-year licensing agreement with Nokia Oyj, once the world’s largest phone maker, to make Nokia-branded smartphones and tablets.

It said in March it would start manufacturing in the European Union, which has been encouraging companies to set up production in key sectors such as semiconductors.

The Nokia XR21 European edition is priced from EUR 649 (nearly Rs. 56,500), the company said.

A limited edition of 30 units from the European production line in frosted platinum will be available for purchase from the company’s website from EUR 699, it said.
