Google Rolling Out May 2022 Update With a Fix for Weak Notification Vibrations on Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro

Google has started rolling out the May 2022 update for its Pixel phones that addresses weak notification vibrations specifically for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. The problem of weak notification vibrations surfaced earlier this year and was reported by a large number of users on both the latest Pixel phones. The May 2022 software update also fixes the display and launcher issues for all Pixel phones starting from the Pixel 3a to the Pixel 6 Pro.

As highlighted in the changelog available on the Community post, the May 2022 Pixel software update includes improvements for haptic feedback to enhance vibration alerts particularly on the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. These improvements are essentially aimed to address user complaints related to weaker vibrations that surfaced on platforms including Google’s support forum and Reddit after the March software update.

Users had complained at the time that following the March update, they were starting to miss text messages and calls due to weaker vibrations than what they were getting earlier.

The March update was, though, meant to offer features including Live Caption and Night Sight support for Snapchat. It also included bug fixes, including the ones for some Wi-Fi connectivity issues on the Pixel 6 series.

It was not the first time when an update introduced problems for Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro users. Last year, the December update caused call drop issues on both Pixel 6 models. Google had to pause that update to avoid its mass impact.

The May 2022 update also fixes the issue that was causing the display on the Pixel phone to wake without user interactions. It also addresses the problem that was resulting in a launcher crash after restarting the device. Both these fixes apply to all eligible Pixel phones, namely the Pixel 3a, Pixel 3a XL, Pixel 4, Pixel 4 XL, Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a (5G), Pixel 5, Pixel 5a (5G), Pixel 6, and the Pixel 6 Pro.

Google has also improved the security side of things with the latest update.

The May 2022 update for the Pixel phones running Android 12 will continue to roll out over the next week in phases. You can check for its arrival on your Pixel device by going to Settings > System > System update. Alternatively, you can get the factory images or OTA images of the update package from the Android Developers portal if you are aware of the risk involved in manually installing the new software version.

Apple Watch Series 8 May Sense Body Temperature, if Algorithm Supports: Ming-Chi Kuo

Apple Watch Series 8, expected to be launched later this year, has seen a lot of buzz around its upcoming features. Previous reports hinted at Apple working to include a feature to measure body temperature in the series. The rumours were first addressed by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who suggested that Apple might not bring the body temperature feature in Watch Series 8. However, in a series of recent tweet, TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed that the company might be working on an algorithm to support the temperature sensing feature in the upcoming smartwatch.

Kuo took to Twitter to explain why the body temperature feature didn’t make it to Apple Watch Series 7. He stated that as the algorithm didn’t support its qualification before reaching the Engineering Validation Testing stage, the feature couldn’t be made to work on the watch. However, the company is planning to introduce the temperature measurement feature this year with the Apple Watch Series 8, if algorithm ends up supporting the requirement. The feature will enable the smartwatch to act as a thermometer and can help detect fever.

Kuo also addressed the key issue that makes it difficult for smartwatches to ensure inclusion of body temperature sensing. “The challenge in implementing precise body temperature measurement is that skin temperature quickly varies depending on outside environments,” he explained. He added smartwatches fail to calculate core temperature measurement with its hardware alone. Hence, an excellent algorithm is required for smartwatches to include temperature sensing feature.

Samsung, in Kuo’s opinion, is facing a similar challenge, making it tough for them to introduce the feature. Kuo also refuted the rumours suggesting the support for body temperature measurement in Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 this year.

Kuo’s tweet has contradicted the report shared by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, where he mentioned that while the Cupertino-based company may add support for checking blood glucose levels and blood pressure levels, it will not be possible for Apple to add the body temperature feature in Apple Watch Series 8.

However, Kuo’s previous report from September last year also hinted at Apple’s progress to offer new health management features.

The Apple Watch Series 8 is expected to arrive mid-September this year, along with the launch of the iPhone 14 series.

NASA’s Ingenuity Helicopter Gives Aerial Perspective on the Perseverance Landing Gear on Mars Surface

NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter, the first probe to ever fly on another planet, has captured images of the landing gear that helped it and its companion, the Perseverance rover, land on Mars in February 2021. NASA has shared the images, saying the copter snapped at the wreckage during its 26th flight on the Red Planet. The images showed the dusty parachute that helped Perseverance descend on the Martian surface and the cone-shaped backshell that protected the $2.4 billion robotic mission as it moved with incredible speed in deep space as well as in the Martian atmosphere.

Entry, descent, and landing on Mars is fast-paced and stressful as the vehicle has to endure gravitational forces, high temperatures and other operational challenges that come with entering Mars atmosphere at 20,000 kph. NASA said the images were captured on April 19, the first anniversary of the helicopter’s first flight.

“We spy with our little eyes…rover landing gear! During the Mars helicopter’s 26th flight, it took photos of the entry, descent, & landing gear Perseverance needed to safely land on Mars. You can see the protective backshell & massive dusty parachute,” NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which operates the mission, said in a tweet.

The Perseverance rover touched down safely in Jezero Crater, a dried-up lakebed, where scientists hope to find signs of ancient microbial life. Currently, the rover is collecting soil samples from Mars to send them back to Earth on a future human mission. These images offer a great opportunity for scientists to plan the landing of the future mission.

“NASA extended Ingenuity flight operations to perform pioneering flights such as this. Every time we’re airborne, Ingenuity covers new ground and offers a perspective no previous planetary mission could achieve,” said Teddy Tzanetos, Ingenuity’s team lead at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, in a statement.

The rover had previously imaged the parachute and backshell from a distance but those images lacked aerial perspective, which these photographs provide.

Crypto Players Need to Register With Belgium’s Finance Regulator to Set Shop in Nation

Belgium, like many other countries, is working to regulate the crypto sector thriving within its premises. In a fresh announcement, the Belgium government has made it compulsory for all virtual asset players to identify themselves. The order comes from Belgium’s Financial Services and Markets Authority (FSMA), aiming to ensure that the government does not miss out on recognising any crypto firm, that could facilitate illegal transactions for illicit purposes. Additionally, Belgium also wishes to curb the risk of potential financial scams carried out by unregistered crypto service providers.

“As from May 1 2022, any legal person established in Belgium that wants to provide exchange services between virtual currencies and legal currencies, or custody wallet services, within Belgium will have to register with the FSMA in advance,” the FSMA said in its statement.

The rule also applies to existing virtual asset firms currently operational in the country of nearly 12 million in population.

“Providers already operating on May 1 2022, must notify the FSMA of the exercise of their activity before July 1 2022 and apply for registration before September 1 2022,” the FSMA added.

Similar steps are being taken by other nations such as Singapore, Cuba, UK, and UAE in order to keep virtual asset investments safe for investors.

Meanwhile, cryptocurrencies remain largely unregulated in Belgium. While the authorities there have warned that virtual currencies are not legal tenders, the nation is still working on its regulatory laws around the digital assets sector.

For tax purposes, the Special Tax Inspectorate (STI) in Belgium generally treats income or gains coming from the sale of cryptocurrency as “miscellaneous income” subject to tax.

Belgium’s crypto circle continues to grow gradually.

Christophe De Beukelaer, from the Belgian capital of Brussels in January 2022 become the first politician from Europe to have converted his salary into Bitcoin.

The parliamentarian draws a monthly salary of EUR 5,500 (roughly Rs. 4.5 lakh), which amounts to BTC 0.17. At the time of writing, BTC is trading at $38,523 (roughly Rs. 29 lakh).

As per Triple-A data, Belgium had over 270,000 crypto holders in 2021.

Global Tablet, Chromebook Shipments Decline in Q1 2022: IDC

Tablet and Chromebook shipments reportedly saw an annual decline in Q1 2022. This data comes from a report by the International Data Corporation (IDC). As per the report, the overall shipments continue to be above pre-pandemic levels, however, the overall growth has slowed down. This trend might indicate that the tablet and Chromebook markets are reverting to normality after experiencing a boom due to the pandemic. People worldwide supposedly made aggressive purchases in 2020 and 2021, which might have led to a more conservative approach in 2022.

As per the IDC report, the tablet shipments reached 38.4 million units during Q1 2022, which is a 3.9 percent year-over-year decline. Reportedly, despite the downward trend, several smartphone vendors like Realme, Oppo, Xiaomi, and more have entered the tablet segment. The high demand for tablets in new markets is expected to be the key propellant for this move by smartphone vendors. Apple remains the global leader in the tablet segment with a hold of 31.5 percent of the market share despite recording a decline of 4.6 percent. Samsung is in second place after experiencing year-on-year growth of 3.5 percent and holding 21.1 percent of the market share. Lenovo and Huawei rounded off the top 5.

Company 1Q22 Unit Shipments 1Q22 Market Share 1Q21 Unit Shipments 1Q21 Market Share Year-Over-Year Growth
Apple 12.1 31.5% 12.7 31.7% -4.6%
Samsung 8.1 21.1% 7.8 19.6% 3.5%
Amazon.com 3.7 9.6% 3.5 8.7% 6.3%
Lenovo 3.0 7.8% 4.1 10.1% -25.9%
Huawei 2.2 5.8% 2.7 6.8% -17.2%
Others 9.2 24.1% 9.2 23.0% 0.6%
Total 38.4 100.0% 39.9 100.0% -3.9%

The Chromebook market continues to plummet with a 61.9 percent YoY decline in Q1 2022. Contrary to the global trend, this market supposedly experienced growth in Asia/ Pacific regions (excluding Japan and China). This growth is purportedly credited to the large-scale investments made in the education sector. However, the overall growth might be caused due to the buildup of inventory and low demand. This inventory buildup is expected to clear out in the coming months, which might give a boost to this market segment. The top three Chromebook vendors for Q1 2022 were Lenovo, Dell, and Acer with 23.2 percent, 22.9 percent, and 22 percent market share, respectively. HP and Samsung rounded off the top 5.

Company 1Q22 Shipments 1Q22 Market Share 1Q21 Shipments 1Q21 Market Share Year-Over Year Growth
Lenovo 1.2 23.2% 3.4 25.7% -65.6%

India Mandates Five-Year Data Saving for Crypto Exchanges, Concerned Experts Foresee Corporate Upheaval

India has mandated a five-year data storage period for crypto exchanges operating in the nation. All virtual asset service providers will essentially have tp store customer information they get via their KYC identification forms for Indian users. The rule also applies to all firms providing Virtual Private Network (VPN) services to Indians. The law has been brought in by India’s Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In). It also instructs concerned companies to report any threat or compromise to security networks within six hours of identifying.

“To address the identified gaps and issues so as to facilitate incident response measures, CERT-In has issued directions relating to information security practices, procedure, prevention, response and reporting of cyber incidents” the government-backed agency said in a statement.

India has witnessed a healthy growth in crypto adoption. Last year, Tracxn data claimed that India already has close to 400 crypto-startups and 12 non-fungible token (NFT) players in the country.

Industry insiders have expressed concerns about the slew of corporate changes that are foreseeable because of this new law, at this point where the crypto ecosystem is still in its early establishment stages in India.

“I think this request from the government of India is extraordinary when it comes to the preservation of data for long, five years. So, I believe they have to completely change their business models if they want to comply with the new rules,” Anshul Dhir, Co-founder and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of EasyFi Network told Gadgets 360. India-founded EasyFi is a Layer 2 DeFi Lending protocol for digital assets powered by Polygon blockchain.

Sensitive data such as IP addresses with timestamps and time zones, transaction IDs, public keys, and wallet addresses have been named by the CERT-In in the list of information that digital assets firms need to store for five years.

Additional tracking data such as the nature and date of transaction along with details on the amount transferred have also been listed to be maintained and saved.

The CERT-In has justified its decision citing national security and cyber safety reasons.

This rule, seeking sensitive user information, could lead to a largescale departure of customers from affected services, Kazim Rizvi, the Founding Director of Indian think tank ‘The Dialogue’ told Gadgets 360.

“The customer information sought under this requirement is sensitive and could deter consumers from availing the affected VPN, crypto, and Cloud services,” Riavi said.

Many companies use VPNs to secure their systems and operations and additional burden on VPN players. As per Rizvi, a lawyer by degree, this law could deter them from operating in India, thus impacting the security of businesses and privacy of users in the nation.

The public policy entrepreneur has suggested the Indian government to refrain from “burdening” crypto, VPN, and Cloud players in the country.

“It is imperative that we refrain from placing additional burdens which may not help CERT-In achieve its objectives, while at the same time might affect the growth of relevant sectors in India. We believe the additional data collection may not be necessary for achieving the cyber security objectives. Also, for validation for customers, all service providers will have to develop additional infrastructure, which will increase costs of operation,” Rizvi added.

The EasiFi chief had also seconded Rizvi in predicting that the CERT-In rule could be detrimental to the ongoing growth trajectory of the impacted sectors.

As per the Indian government, these directions will become effective after 60 days.

Along with crypto exchanges, custodian wallet providers have also been included on the list of virtual asset industry players that will be impacted by this rule.

India has been introducing new rules in order to keep transactions of virtual digital assets, traceable. The government aims to curb potential misuses of digital assets for money laundering and terror financing.

The tax rules on digital asset transactions went live in India last month.

Days later, research firm Crebaco reported that the volume of cryptocurrency trading in India nosedived by upto 70 percent since the tax laws came into effect.

The country is not looking to give any tax relaxations or incentives to crypto players setting up the industry ecosystem. In March, industry experts had raised concerned on India’s restricted approach to the virtual assets industry.
