WhatsApp Could Soon Get a ‘Recently Online’ List to Recommend Contacts to Users: Report

WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will reportedly recommend contacts you can reach out to. The feature is a list dubbed Recently Online which shows the names of contacts who were recently logged into the app. The report speculates that the purpose of the feature is to help users determine people who are more likely to respond if texted or called. However, it will not show the currently online people, and instead only give an approximate understanding of those who have used the app recently.

According to a report by WhatsApp update tracker WABetaInfo, the instant messaging platform is testing a new feature that was spotted in the WhatsApp beta for iOS 24.8.10.70 update via the TestFlight app. The report also highlighted that some beta testers might have access to the new feature, although it is not rolled out widely in the beta app. Interestingly, the same feature was also introduced in the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.9.14 build, highlighting that both of the platforms could soon get this feature in their respective apps.

WhatsApp’s Recently Online list

Based on the screenshot shared by the publication, the Recently Online list only appears on the new chat and new call screen where the user selects the contact to write a text or make a call. Here, underneath the basic menu options, a new section highlighting the contacts that were recently online will be shown. It is unclear what exactly constitutes “recently online”, and what is the time limit after which a name is removed from the list.

The feature will, however, not show the list of people who are online currently, or the time when they were last online, as per the report. This is likely done to protect the privacy of the users. Further, those users who have set their Last seen to nobody will not appear on this list. It is unclear whether they will be able to see the Recently Online list or not.

This feature is currently in beta, but the report claims that it is likely to be rolled out to users globally in the coming weeks.

Apple Set for Big Sales Decline as Investors Await Generative AI-Powered iPhone

Apple’s plan to add generative AI to its iPhones and revive sagging sales in the crucial Chinese market will be in focus on Thursday, when the tech giant is expected to report its biggest quarterly revenue decline in more than a year.

Long considered a must-own stock on Wall Street, Apple shares have underperformed other Big Tech companies in recent months, falling more than 10 percent year to date as fears mount about its slow roll out of AI services and as a resurgent Huawei takes market share in China.

Analysts on average see iPhone sales, which account for about half of Apple’s revenue, falling 10.4 percent in the first three months of 2024, according to LSEG. That drop would be the steepest in more than three years.

Analysts estimate Apple’s total revenue declined 5 percent in its second quarter, which included January through March. That would be Apple’s biggest revenue decline since the December-quarter of 2022, when revenue fell 5.5 percent.

Apple earlier this year lost the crown of the world’s most valuable company to Microsoft and its market value now stands at $2.68 trillion (roughly Rs. 2,23,68,017 crore) after the decline in its share price in 2024.

Weak revenue and falling shares have put pressure on Apple to spruce up its flagship device after years without major upgrades.

The company is in talks with OpenAI and Alphabet-owned Google to add genAI features for the iPhone that could be unveiled at what is expected to be its biggest-ever annual developer conference in June, Bloomberg News has reported.

Analysts believe such an AI integration could drive demand for the next iPhone series, expected to be announced in the fall.

While executives at Microsoft, Alphabet, Meta Platforms and other major technology firms have talked up their AI strategies on quarterly conference calls in recent months, Apple CEO Tim Cook has discussed his plans for the emerging technology much less.

Adding AI features to iPhones could also help Apple to compete better with Huawei and Samsung Electronics, which reclaimed the title of the world’s top smartphone vendor from Apple earlier this year, driven by demand for the AI features in its Galaxy S24 smartphones.

“Replacement cycle tailwinds and incremental generative AI features set up Apple well for a strong iPhone 16 cycle,” Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi said this week, upgrading his rating on the company’s shares to “outperform” from “market-perform”.

“We believe prevailing weakness in China is more cyclical than structural, and note historically Apple’s China business has exhibited much higher volatility than Apple overall, given its very feature-sensitive installed base.”

Thursday’s earnings will also be watched closely for updates on the company’s stock buyback plan and the Vision Pro, Apple’s first major product in years that hit the shelves in February.

After initial enthusiasm, there have been signs that demand slowed for the $3,500 device, with an analyst saying this month that Apple has pulled back its production estimates for the mixed-reality headset.

The rest of the company’s hardware business is also reeling from soft demand, with iPads and Mac sales expected to fall 11.4 percent and 4.3 percent, respectively, in the March quarter.

Apple has signaled it is sharpening its focus on the devices, which have also been hobbled by a lack of major upgrades.

The company is hosting an event later this month where a revamped iPad line-up is expected to be unveiled and media reports have said that it plans to update every Mac model with faster, AI-focused M4 processors.

The services business – which includes money earned from App Store and subscription services such as Apple TV – is expected to remain a bright spot with revenue growth of 7.7 percent.

Google Cloud Teams with Sui Blockchain to Improve Web3, AI in Advanced Tech Initiatives

The overall tech sector is presently on a boom with blockchain-based Web3 making an entry across verticals. In a fresh development, Google Cloud has teamed up with a Layer-1 blockchain platform Sui to integrate blockchain solutions with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other tech initiatives. As part of this partnership, Google is initiating another step in driving Web3 innovations on a global level. While Google Cloud is already a big name in the tech sector, the Sui platform was created by Mysten Labs, working to propel Web3 technologies into mainstream adoption.

Now that Google Cloud and Sui have struck a partnership, both have planned to work on improving the security and scalability of AI-powered Web3 applications. As far as Sui is concerned, the platform is hoping to stir engagement around its overall ecosystem and native token represented as SUI through this partnership with Google Cloud.

“Sui’s advanced blockchain technology and commitment to user-friendly experiences make them a valuable collaborator for delivering transformative applications that can be easily embraced by Web3 and Web2 developers,” Amit Zavery, VP and general manager, and Head of Platform, Google Cloud said in an official statement.

In recent days, Mysten Labs developed a fresh code auditing tool, powered by AI. This tool uses Google Cloud capabilities to identify vulnerabilities across Cloud-based security protocols. Previously, Sui has also put to use Google Cloud’s generative AI platform Vertex AI to help Web3 developers recognise and improve vulnerable codes.

“Collaborating with Google Cloud helps us propel the development of secure, scalable, and user-centric Web3 experiences. Google Cloud’s AI capabilities complement Sui’s unique technological strengths, empowering all types of developers to create the next generation of decentralised applications on Sui,” Evan Cheng, CEO and co-founder of Mysten Labs added to the official statement.

For Google, Web3 has emerged as an area of focus for a while now. Back in 2022, Google launched its Blockchain Node Engine in Google Cloud – capable of deploying completely managed blockchain nodes in the Cloud.

Aiming to cater to the growing community of Web3 and cryptocurrencies, earlier this year Google decided to show balances of crypto wallets through a simple Google search of the wallet address.

Binance Crypto Exchange Founder Changpeng Zhao Sentenced to 4 Months in Prison

Changpeng Zhao, the former chief executive of Binance, was sentenced on Tuesday to four months in prison after pleading guilty to violating US laws against money laundering at the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange.

Once considered the most powerful crypto industry figure, Zhao, known as “CZ,” is the second major crypto boss to be sentenced to prison.

The sentence imposed by US District Judge Richard Jones in Seattle was significantly shorter than the three years sought by prosecutors, and below the maximum 1-1/2 years recommended under federal guidelines.

It was also much lighter than the 25 years behind bars that Sam Bankman-Fried received in March for stealing $8 billion (roughly Rs. 66,788 crore) from customers of his now-bankrupt FTX exchange. Bankman-Fried is appealing his conviction and sentence.

Still, prosecutors cheered the outcome of what had been a years-long investigation into Binance and Zhao, a billionaire who had been living beyond US reach in the United Arab Emirates.

“This was an epic day,” US Attorney Tessa Gorman told reporters outside the courthouse. “Incarceration was critical in this case and we’re pleased with the result.”

Before handing down the sentence, Jones faulted Zhao for making Binance’s growth and profitability a higher priority than complying with US laws.

“You had the wherewithal, the finance capabilities, and the people power to make sure that every single regulation had to be complied with, and so you failed at that opportunity,” he said.

Zhao, 47, did not visibly react upon hearing his sentence.

He wore a navy blue suit and tie in the courtroom, with his mother and several other family members in attendance. Defense lawyers had requested probation.

“‘Crime pays’ is the message sent today,” Dennis Kelleher, head of the financial reform advocacy group Better Markets, wrote in an email, noting Zhao will still get to keep his vast wealth.

‘I’m sorry’

Prosecutors said Binance employed a “Wild West” model that welcomed criminals, and did not report more than 100,000 suspicious transactions with designated terrorist groups including Hamas, al-Qaeda and Islamic State.

They also said Zhao’s exchange supported the sale of child sexual abuse materials and received a large portion of ransomware proceeds.

Binance agreed to a $4.32 billion (roughly Rs. 36,065 crore) penalty, and Zhao paid a $50 million (roughly Rs. 417 crore) criminal fine plus $50 million to the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

“I’m sorry,” Zhao told the judge before being sentenced.

“I believe the first step of taking responsibility is to fully recognize the mistakes. Here I failed to implement an adequate anti-money laundering program … I realize now the seriousness of that mistake.”

Much of Binance’s misconduct, including its weak money laundering controls, was first reported by Reuters.

Zhao will surrender voluntarily to serve his sentence, most likely at a detention center near Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

“Not prioritizing compliance is a few shades below criminal intent. It’s bad, but it’s below the usual requirement of specific intent” that would justify a years-long sentence, said Robert Frenchman, a lawyer specializing in white-collar crime.

But given the scale of Binance’s violations and the massive fines imposed, he should not have expected probation or home detention, Frenchman added.

Not a monster

Prosecutors had told the judge a tough sentence would send a clear signal to other would-be criminals.

“We are not suggesting that Mr. Zhao is Sam Bankman-Fried or that he is a monster,” prosecutor Kevin Mosley said.

But Zhao’s conduct, he said, “wasn’t a mistake. This wasn’t a regulatory ‘oops.'”

Zhao stepped down as Binance’s chief in November, when he and the exchange he founded in 2017 admitted to evading money-laundering requirements under the Bank Secrecy Act.

In seeking probation, defense lawyers said others who admitted to similar wrongdoing, including BitMEX founder Arthur Hayes, were not locked up.

Zhao “wanted to make a difference in the world,” but made mistakes, defense lawyer Mark Bartlett said.

Jones said the three-year sentence requested by prosecutors was inappropriate because they did not show that Zhao knew in advance about illegal activity.

“It’s always the case the government asks for more than they think they’ll get,” said Frenchman. “Going that much above guidelines for a pleader is unusually aggressive.”

Several other crypto moguls are also in the crosshairs of US authorities after the collapse of crypto prices in 2022 exposed fraud and misconduct across the industry.

Amazon Q AI Assistant Now Available for Enterprise Customers, Amazon Q Apps Out in Preview

Amazon announced the wider availability of its latest artificial intelligence (AI)-powered assistant for enterprise, Amazon Q, on Tuesday. The e-commerce giant first announced its business-focused chatbot in November 2023, promising both generative and analytical assistance based on the business’ in-house data. Later, Amazon made the AI tool available to a limited number of users. Now, the company has made it generally available and has added some new features to it. Notably, enterprises will now get two separate chatbots — Amazon Q Developer and Amazon Q Business — for separate sets of tasks.

In a newsroom post, Amazon’s cloud computing platform Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced that both Amazon Q Developer and Business chatbots are now available for enterprises. This will be available to those customers who use AWS services. The AI bot trains and learns from the business’ data and workflows and can help with more coding-related and business analytics-related tasks.

The Amazon Q Developer is designed as an assistant for software developers and it can help them by “performing tedious and repetitive tasks” such as coding, testing, upgrading applications, troubleshooting, security scanning and fixes as well as optimising AWS resources. The company says the saved time can be used by professionals to develop unique experiences for end users and deploy them faster.

For analytical assistance, the tech giant is making its Amazon Q Business available. This tool is designed to accept and process natural language queries and prompts. Based on the knowledge from the business’ database stored in AWS servers, it can answer questions, generate summaries and content, write reports, and provide data-driven analysis. Amazon Q is also being added to Amazon QuickSight, AWS’s unified Business Intelligence service for the cloud.

Apart from these, Amazon also has another feature which is not yet available to all users. Dubbed Amazon Q Apps, it allows employees to build AI-powered apps based on the company’s data. Even employees who have no prior knowledge of coding can build apps through it by providing a simple description of the app and the tasks it should perform. The AI chatbot can then create the app end-to-end. This feature is currently in preview.

Apple Safari Browser to Reportedly Get Major AI Upgrade With Article Summarisation, Web Eraser Features

Apple’s Safari web browser is reportedly getting a major upgrade and could soon sport artificial intelligence (AI)-powered features. Earlier this month, a report claimed that Safari could be one of the first Apple apps to get AI features. Now, another report has stated that the company is currently running internal tests on multiple new features for the Safari 18 build that will come with iOS 18 and macOS 15. Additionally, the tech giant is also said to be working on a system-wide visual lookup feature.

According to a report by AppleInsider, the next update to Safari could come with a minor interface revamp, features to summarise articles, blocking content on a web page, and even an AI-powered assistant. Citing unnamed people familiar with the development, the report stated that Apple is currently evaluating the performance and viability of these features. The publication also shared images of the features.

Safari browser’s new features

The most notable feature mentioned in the report is Intelligent Search. The feature is said to draw on Apple’s on-device AI technology, specifically the language-learning model Ajax, to summarise web pages and articles. Based on the examples shared, the AI feature summarises the text in topic headlines and small paragraphs describing the topics. Notably, similar features are also offered by Google with its Gemini AI and Microsoft’s Copilot. It is not known whether the Intelligent Assistant will also offer other features such as text generation.

Another AI-powered feature Apple is working on for its Safari 18 browser is being called Web Eraser, as per the report. This is a content-blocking tool that can remove any element from a web page. The tool can be used to delete banner ads, images, and even text from a page. It is said that the Safari browser remembers the elements removed by a user even when the session is over. Opening the same page next time automatically adds the same effect and gives the option to revert to the unblocked view.

Apart from these, the browser is also getting a minor interface change. A new page controls menu is reportedly being added to the address bar. This menu will contain the options to activate the above mentioned features as well as include various other tools that are currently spread across different menus in Safari. Based on the screenshot, it also features the ‘Aa’ option and the zoom feature. Notably, the new Safari browser’s interface is being kept the same in both iOS 18 and macOS 15 versions, suggesting that the tech giant might be unifying the browser experience across both devices.

Finally, the report highlighted that Apple is working on an enhancement to its visual lookup feature which currently exists within the Photos app and identifies plants, pets and landmarks from photos. The report claims Apple is trying to make this feature system-wide so it works on any screen including the web pages of Safari. The under-development enhancement is said to be powered by AI.

Circle to Search Could Soon Support Split Screen Mode on Pixel Phones: Report

Circle to Search reportedly suffers from a unique issue on the Google Pixel smartphones. It appears that the feature does not work when a user has enabled split screen mode that opens two different apps or windows at the same time. A report claims that Google is testing the issue and might soon fix it and allow users to access the feature even while working in split-screen mode. Notably, a recent report highlighted that the tech giant is also working on a feature that will allow users to capture partial screenshots of the selected screen.

According to a report by Android Authority (via Mishaal Rahman), this issue only exists on Pixel phones. The Samsung Galaxy S24 series apparently does show the Circle to Search feature even while on split-screen. The tipster, during his investigation, initially believed the problem emerged from Android’s Assist API on top of which the feature is built. However, he found that this was not the case.

Later, while examining Pixel’s Launcher app in the latest Android 15 Beta 1.2, Rahman came across a flag, enabling which gave him access to activate Circle to Search even in split-screen mode. Based on this, the tipster claims that it is likely that Google is working on a fix for the issue that restricted Circle to Search from appearing. While a release date for the fix is not known, it is believed that it could be shipped with the next update for Pixel smartphones.

Google’s Circle to Search is a visual lookup tool that uses artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities to process the content displayed on the screen. It then runs it through Google Search to show results. It can be used to explain a particular word or phrase, find out the price of a dress, know more about a famous building, and more. The feature can also be used to copy a block of text displayed on the screen.

The tech giant is also planning to add more functionality to the feature. A report highlights that Google is working on adding partial screenshot capability to the feature. Two new options, Copy and Share, are said to pop up when selecting and highlighting a part of the screen. Reportedly, tapping on Copy takes it to the clipboard, which can then be edited via any photo editor app. Share allows users to directly share it with others through supported third-party apps.
