Samsung Denies Rumours of Affordable Foldable Smartphones: Report

Samsung’s 2024 lineup was recently speculated to include budget foldable smartphones. The first affordable foldable from the South Korean tech giant was said to cost around $400 to $500 (roughly Rs. 33,000 to Rs. 41,000), similar to a mid-range Galaxy A series smartphone. The company has now reportedly denied rumours of a mid-range Samsung foldable phone. Samsung was said to release Fan Edition versions of the foldable phone after the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 next year.

As per a report by Korea JoongAng Daily, a Samsung spokesperson confirmed that the company doesn’t have plans for a “mid-range” foldable. “We don’t plan to manufacture foldable smartphones that are priced in the midrange, and the latest rumours are groundless,” the report quotes the spokesperson as saying.

Samsung was also rumoured to launch a cheaper Galaxy Z foldable phone called the Galaxy Z FE (Fan Edition) after the launch of Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 and the spokesperson rejected the rumour saying, “there’s nothing decided on the matter”.

Recent rumours said that Samsung was developing a lower-cost foldable set to arrive in 2024. A report by market research firm TrendForce claimed that Samsung will introduce more competitively priced foldable phones to the mid-range market next year to help reduce price barriers and make foldable phones more accessible. Further, a tipster opined that the foldable could be priced as low as $400 to $500.

The South Korean brand has released five iterations of the Galaxy Z foldable flagships. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 were launched just a few months ago. The price of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 starts at $999(roughly Rs. 82,000), while the Galaxy Z Fold 5 has an initial price tag of $1,799 (roughly Rs. 1,47,000).

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 price in India starts at Rs. 1,54,999 for the base 12GB RAM + 256GB storage configuration and Galaxy Z Flip 5 starts at Rs. 99,999 for the 8GB RAM + 256GB storage model.

Both the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 are powered by Qualcomm’s custom Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy and feature a new Flex Hinge. They ship with One UI 5.1.1 based on Android 13 and have an IPX8 rated build for water resistance.

Samsung’s W series launch conference will take place on September 15 in China, the Suwon-headquartered company confirmed on Friday (September 1). While Samsung has only mentioned the W series, we can expect the series it to include the Samsung W24 and Samsung W24 Flip, successors to the Samsung W23 and the Samsung W23 Flip, respectively. The upcoming handsets are anticipated to debut as custom versions of the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5. The design of the Chinese variants could be quite similar to the models launched in India and they are likely to include some hardware-level modifications.

As competition in the foldable smartphone is heating up with new entrants such as Google’s Pixel Fold, Motorola Razr+, and Xiaomi’s Mix Fold 3, incumbent market leader Samsung is reportedly looking to unveil foldable phones with affordable price tags starting next year. A tipster has suggested that Samsung plans to unveil a cheaper Galaxy Z foldable phone called the Galaxy Z FE (Fan Edition). The South Korean tech company is rumoured to release Fan Edition versions of the foldable phone after the release of Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 next year.

Tipster Revegnus (@Tech_Reve) on X (formerly Twitter) claimed that Samsung is planning to unveil Fan Edition versions of the foldable phones starting next year. Samsung is said to unveil the Galaxy Z FE model after the debut of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 next year.

Samsung has been dominating the market for foldable smartphones for several years now. Samsung Planning to Introduce Foldable Tablets and Laptops, Company Executive Confirms

Samsung may soon bring foldable tablets and laptops to the market. A company executive confirmed that they are working on the technology to integrate the foldable feature into more electronic products after launching five series of foldable smartphones. Recently, the firm launched the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Flip 5 at the second Galaxy Unpacked event of the year. The phones were released alongside the Galaxy Tab S9 series which included a base, a plus and an ultra model.

Samsung’s Mobile eXperience Business Head TM Roh confirmed in an interview with the Independent that foldable tablets and laptops could be planned in the future by the South Korean tech giant. Roh said he is confident that since tablets are already a popular product category, its foldable versions will also do well in the market. He explains that humans always “open up a book to read and open up a notebook to write something.”

Roh elaborates that just like books or notebooks, foldable smartphones are easier to store when not in use or be carried around while in transit while also keeping all necessary information secure. Likewise, the company is thinking about to bring similar technology to tablets and laptops, and it is also making necessary investments to see the ideas through, he claimed. However, the Samsung executive did not offer a definite timeline for the launch of these products.

The Galaxy Tab S9 series models are all powered by octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoCs. The tablets run Android 13 out-of-the-box. The base model sports an 11-inch dynamic AMOLED 2X display and packs an 8,400mAh battery, while the plus and ultra models come with 12.4-inch and 14.6-inch displays and 10,090mAh and 11,200mAh batteries, respectively.

The base Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 starts in India at Rs. 72,999 for its 128GB storage WiFi variant, while the Tab S9 Plus and Tab S9 Ultra start at Rs. 90,999 and Rs. 1,08,999, respectively. All three models are offered in Beige and Graphite colour options.

Foldable smartphones market share in the ultra-premium segment, priced above Rs. 45,000 apiece, is expected to grow more than four times to 35 percent in India, Counterpoint Research said on Friday.

Foldable smartphones market share in the first half of 2023 stood at about 8 percent, the market research firm said.

“In 2023 (till June), Foldables constituted 8 per cent of ultra-premium (over Rs. 45,000) Android smartphone shipments, a number projected to surge to 35 percent by the end of 2025,” Counterpoint Research said in a report.

The report said clamshell smartphones among the foldable designs are particularly favoured by female users, accounting for 82 percent of total foldable shipments in the first half of 2023 due to their affordability.

“Localisation of manufacturing, exemplified by flagship devices like Samsung Z Fold 5 and Flip 5 being produced in India, is fuelling the market’s growth,” Counterpoint said.

The market research firm estimates that the anticipated entry of more mobile phone makers into the foldable space will further invigorate the market.

Notably, Korean smart devices major Samsung will manufacture its premium flagship devices Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 in India to meet local requirements, a senior company official said on Thursday. Samsung plans to launch the most expensive and high-end devices from its stable in India on August 18 and the pre-booking with offers will start at midnight of July 27.

“Both Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 will be manufactured at India factory in Noida,” Samsung SouthWest Asia President and CEO J B Park said.

According to market research and analysis firm Techarc estimates, foldable (including flip) smartphones will contribute over 1.8 percent of the total smartphone revenues for 2023. The estimate implies over 6.35 lakh foldable smartphones will be sold in India during the year which will be less than 0.5 percent of the total sales by volume estimated for the period.
