Samsung Galaxy Unpacked Event for Galaxy Z Fold 5, Galaxy Z Flip 5 Said to Take Place in South Korea

Samsung hosted its first Galaxy Unpacked event of this year on February 1 in San Francisco. As we are inching closer towards the launch of the next-generation Galaxy Z foldable smartphone series, Lee Young-hee, President of Samsung DX’s Global Marketing Center has reportedly confirmed the location of the next Unpacked event. The Suwon headquartered company would host its next major Galaxy Unpacked event to unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 in Seoul, South Korea instead of the US or Europe. This is not the first time Samsung is choosing Seoul as a location for the release of its premium handsets. The launch of the Galaxy Note 20 series took place virtually in Seoul in 2020.

As per a report by Yonhap News (Korean), Lee Young-hee revealed that the upcoming Unpacked event will take place in Seoul, South Korea. She reportedly made the confirmation during a press Q&A at the Samsung Ho-Am Award Ceremony at the Shilla Hotel. When asked about the reason for conducting the event in Seoul, Young-hee reportedly said, “because Korea is meaningful and important.”

In previous years, Samsung held its major smartphone launch events either in the US or Europe. In 2020, the company unveiled the Galaxy Note 20 series in South Korea, though it was a virtual event.

Samsung is yet to confirm the exact date of the next Galaxy Unpacked 2023 event. However, it is rumoured to take place on July 26. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 are expected to make their debut at the event alongside Galaxy Watch 6 lineup. The Galaxy Tab S9 series, comprising the base Galaxy Tab S9, the Galaxy Tab S9+, and the high-end Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra are also expected to go official during the event.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 are expected to feature a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC under the hood. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 is said to come with a price tag of $1,799 (roughly Rs. 1,47,000)

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5’s Battery Life Could Depend on Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC: Report

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is anticipated to debut in August as the successor to the Galaxy Z Flip 4. Samsung is expected to equip the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC on the upcoming clamshell smartphone. Like the Galaxy S23 family, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 could be powered by a special version of the chipset. The battery life of the model will reportedly depend on this customised Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy chipset. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is said to carry two batteries with model numbers EB-BF731ABY and EB-BF732ABY. It could feature a pull tab to make battery replacement easier.

As per a report by Sammobile, the battery life of the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 5 will mostly depend on the newer Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. The listing of the smartphone in the South Korean certification body Safety Korea suggested two batteries with model numbers EB-BF946ABY and EB-BF947ABY. The former has a rated capacity of 971mAh, while the latter has a larger capacity of 2,620mAh. This could bring a total battery capacity of 3,591mAh.

The predecessor, Galaxy Z Flip 4, reportedly has two battery units with 1,040mAh and 2,555mAh capacities and it is backed by a 3700mAh battery. The new model could also boast a 3,700mAh cell.

Based on this, the report claims that any battery gains posted by the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 5 will likely be the result of the newer Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset and better optimisation.

The battery of Galaxy Z Flip 5 is said to include a pull tab for easy removal of the cell from the handset. It is said to be offered in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB storage options and beige, gray, light green, and light pink colour options. Further, it is tipped to come with a 3.4-inch outer display with a resolution of 720×748 pixels and a pixel density of 305ppi.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 Leaked Artist Renders Suggest Minor Design Changes

Samsung has yet to announce an official timeline for the launch of its Galaxy Z Fold models. The handsets are expected to be launched at an unpacked event in July this year where Samsung is expected to unveil updates for its Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 4 models. While the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is expected to get some bigger design changes, the bigger Galaxy Z Fold 5 is expected to get minor or more subtle updates. After getting treated to numerous leaks, there’s now a bunch of leaked artist renders that suggest what the Galaxy Z Fold 5 may look like.

Smartprix, in collaboration with @OnLeaks, has shared some artist renders of the Galaxy Z Fold 5. The renders, according to the source, have been derived based on measurements and dimensions shared by another tipster (@UniverseIce) in an earlier tweet. The design of the foldable remains mostly unchanged when compared to the currently available Galaxy Z Fold 4 model that we reviewed last year.

The Galaxy Z Fold 5, according to this render, seems to retain the flatter sides of the frame and the same goes for the placement of the speakers and buttons. What does appear a bit different compared to the outgoing model is the design of the rear camera module. While it appears the same in terms of overall design, it now protrudes drastically, appearing a bit chunky. This could also hint at improved cameras, which probably take up more space and therefore need to be raised by a few millimetres in comparison to the outgoing model.

While the renders showcase the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 from multiple angles, there is no render showing the bottom or top view of the handset in a closed state. So, it isn’t clear whether the two halves of the foldable sit flat against each other. However, the source mentions that there will be a minor gap between the two halves when the phone is in a closed state.

A recent report leaked plenty of details about the Galaxy Z Fold 5. It suggested that the phone will have a display that is like the outgoing model, but will be brighter. Other upgrades hint at Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection for the outer display and a more durable inner display along with a revamped hinge. The phone according to the source will be priced from $1,799, which is roughly Rs. 1,47,000.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, Galaxy Z Flip 5 Will Debut With One UI 5.1.1 Based on Android 13: Report

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 are expected to launch in August this year. While we haven’t heard anything from the South Korean brand about its 2023 foldable smartphones yet, a new report claims that the Samsung flagships will debut with One UI 5.1.1 based on Google’s latest Android 13. The firmware with One UI 5.1.1 is reportedly appearing for the model numbers SM-F731N and SM-F946N, which are said to be associated with the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5. They are expected to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC.

According to a report by SamMobile, the launch of Samsung Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip 5 will mark the release of the latest version of the company’s custom skin. Samsung is reportedly testing One UI 5.1.1 based on Android 13 on the two upcoming foldable phones now.

The South Korean variant of Galaxy Z Fold 5 (SM-F946N) and Galaxy Z Flip 5 (SM-F731N) were reportedly found running One UI 5.1.1. The former was seen with firmware version F731NKSU0AWD5, while the latter is said to be associated with firmware version F946NKSU0AWD5.

Samsung is expected to release One UI 5.1.1 to existing Galaxy smartphones and tablets a few days after the launch of the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and the Galaxy Z Fold 5. It is said to bring improvements to the stock apps, Galaxy ecosystem features, and enhancements to the Flex Mode.

Samsung One UI 5.1 was unveiled alongside the Samsung Galaxy S23 series in February. Besides the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, and Galaxy S23 Ultra, the update is currently reaching other eligible Galaxy smartphones as well. It allows users to change hues while taking selfies and adds access to the Expert RAW feature. It also brings improvements to the DeX Mode, Bixby Text Calls, weather app, and the gallery app.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 Listed on Geekbench With Interesting Scores: Report

With Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series now official, the company’s upcoming foldables have begun to appear in numerous leaks. Tagged as the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5, the two foldables are bound to get some competition this year from Chinese brand’s as Oppo has already launched its first clamshell foldable, the Find N2 Flip in India. Samsung’s upcoming foldables have shown up in past leaks suggesting design and camera-related information, but we now have some Geekbench listings that hint a bit more about its core specifications and performance.

First spotted by GalaxyClub.nl, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5 appear to make use of Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, which is also currently in use in Samsung’s Galaxy S23 lineup. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 has been listed with the model number SM-F731U, while the bigger Galaxy Z Fold 5 has been listed with the model number SM-F946U. Going by the model numbers and Samsung’s naming convention, it’s clear that these are the US models of the devices.

The site also points out that Galaxy Z Flip 5 features 8GB of RAM on the tested model, while the Galaxy Z Fold 5 appears to have 12GB of RAM. While both smartphones use the same processor, their respective clock speeds indicate that Samsung is going with the customised version of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, which has a higher clock speed compared to the standard SoC.

Coming to the scores, the testing was done on Geekbench 6. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 seems to have managed a score of 2,030 and 5,213 points, while the Galaxy Z Fold 5 achieved 2,014 and 5,022 points in their respective single and multi-core tests. The scores do appear a bit higher compared to the results that we achieved in our reviews of the Galaxy S23 and the Galaxy S23 Ultra. The Galaxy S23, which is available with 8GB RAM managed 1,944 and 5,008 points while the Galaxy S23 Ultra with 12GB RAM managed 1,918 and 5,042 points in their respective Geekbench 6 single and multi-core tests.

It is interesting to see Samsung go with the same processor for its Galaxy S and Galaxy Z lineup this year. The smartphone giant went with a different strategy last year when it came to processors on its flagship smartphones, where it chose the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 for its Galaxy S22 series and then went for the improved Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 for its Galaxy Z series of devices.

Previous leaks have pointed out that Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 5 will feature an outer display that’s very similar to the outgoing Galaxy Z Fold 4 model. The phone is said to feature a 6.2-inch full-HD+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate and a 23.1:9 aspect ratio. It is expected to weigh about 254g and will come with an IPX8 rating. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is rumoured to pack a bigger outer display, although there are no specific details about how big this outer display will be.

The Galaxy Z Fold 5 as per a previous report is said to be available with UFS 4.0 storage in 256GB, 512GB and 1TB variants. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is also expected to be offered in the same storage variants as the current model. An older leak had suggested that the new Galaxy Z Fold 5 model will feature cameras that are similar to the outgoing model as well.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 Purported Concept Video Hints at Galaxy S23-Like Design: Watch

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 concept video has been leaked online, giving smartphone enthusiasts an idea of what to expect from the company’s next generation foldable phone. The device is seen in the video posted to YouTube in collaboration with a tipster. The handset is shown in two colourways, while sporting a design language similar to the recently launched Galaxy S23 series. The video also shows off the Galaxy Fold Edition S Pen, which is expected to be sold as a separate accessory due to the purported lack of a stylus slot on the upcoming foldable phone.

According to the video posted by Technizo Concept on YouTube in collaboration with tipster Super Roader, Samsung’s upcoming flagship foldable phone, believed to be the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, may follow the same design language adopted by Samsung for its flagship Galaxy S23 series. A similar design can also be seen on recent smartphone launched by the South Korean giant in the affordable and mid-range segment.

In the latest concept video of the purported Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, the foldable device is seen sporting three vertically aligned distinct camera cutouts with a single LED flash below them. The same design, as previously mentioned, was first seen on the Galaxy S23 series. However, tipster Ice Universe suggests the upcoming foldable device will differ from the Samsung Galaxy S23 in terms of size and thickness, owing to the external display.

In the video, the foldable handset is shown to feature a teardrop-style hinge at the fold. A report by MySmartPrice suggests that the hinge is seen in the video ensuring that the gap between the two halves of the smartphone is much less when it is folded, due to the presence of the teardrop-style hinge.

The suggestion of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 featuring a similar design to the Samsung Galaxy S23 series, which debuted last year as the company’s flagship smartphone series, was previously made by tipster Ice Universe on Twitter.

The alleged concept render also visualises the Galaxy Fold Edition S Pen, which is expected to be sold as a separate accessory, as the foldable smartphone is tipped to arrive without an S Pen slot. The smartphone is seen in the video in two colourways, Shimmery Gold and Coral Green. Both colour variants are shown to feature matching sides with a glossy finish.

In the video the SIM card slot is visible on the left side of the purported Galaxy Z Fold 5, while the volume buttons, the fingerprint scanner for biometric verification, and the power toggle button are housed on the right side of the device. Three mics are visible on the top of the foldable smartphone, while the speaker grille, USB Type-C port, and a single mic are housed at the bottom.

Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series of smartphones was launched earlier this week and the South Korean firm’s high-end handsets have seen a few upgrades across all three models. Samsung Showcases a Prototype ‘Flex in and Out’ 360-Degree Foldable Display: Report

Samsung Display has reportedly developed a 360-degree rotating display. According to a report, the foldable display prototype, first showcased at Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2023, can be folded in both directions to a full 360-degree range. Samsung Display (a Samsung subsidiary which makes its displays) calls it the “Flex in and out” display and while it’s not a new form factor when it comes to foldable devices, it sure has some interesting use cases. Samsung had showcased several display prototypes at CES 2023, including a new Flex Hybrid display which both folds and slides simultaneously.

According to a report in The Verge, Samsung recently showed off this prototype display at CES 2023. The “Flex in and out” display, as its name aptly describes, can fold both inwards and outwards. This means that the display can open up like unfolding a newspaper or fold outwards and wrap itself around the device, like the hardcover of a book.

The report claims that the display showcased also utilises the water-drop hinge design, which makes the inwards and outward folding mechanism possible. This new hinge, which holds the display in a tear drop shape when folded inwards, is quite different from the current one used in Samsung‘s outgoing Galaxy Fold models. The brand claims that the new hinge design, apart from leaving a much less visible crease, will also help reduce stress on the foldable display, which should in theory help with long-term reliability.

The “Flex in and out” display also appears to be attached to a functional device with a software interface and in appearance closely resembles the currently available Galaxy Fold models. So, it is a possibility that Samsung could bring it to the upcoming Galaxy Fold model which, going by tradition, should be announced in August this year. The Verge mentions that Samsung did showcase a similar display, but with multiple inward and outward folds at an earlier event held in Korea.

A dual function fold in and fold out display primarily reduces the need for a second external display, which is often used when the device is folded. This is possible, as the internal display can double up as the external one when folded outwards, where the device can be placed on one side on a surface, such as a table. While this design has been experimented with in the past, it was shot down mainly because foldable displays weren’t durable when exposed back then. If Samsung does go ahead with this new hinge and foldable display for its next Fold model, it will reduce the need to have a secondary external display, unless Samsung expects the user to keep the display folded inwards and protected by two outer clamshells, when in pockets or in storage.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 Rumoured to Get a Redesigned Hinge With Water Resistance: All Details

As the Samsung Galaxy S23 series nears its launch, the rumour mill’s focus is now shifting to other products further down the timeline, which includes the Galaxy Z Fold model. While Samsung has played it safe with its Galaxy Z Fold lineup over the years, there’s now more players in the foldable space with brands like Oppo and Vivo cashing in on devices with folding displays as well. A new leak now hints that Samsung will change the design of Galaxy Z Fold 5’s hinge, which should lead to other improvements — both for the phone’s overall cosmetic design and its display.

A new leak by reliable tipster Ice Univerce (@UniverseIce) points to changes to the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5’s hinge design. According to the source, Samsung will adopt a new ‘droplet’ hinge design on the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 5. The South Korean company internally refers to the new hinge as a “dumbbell hinge”. While it sounds unique, the tipster points out that all other smartphone brands have switched to the new water drop hinge design lately and that Samsung would be the last one to adopt the same. The source also states that when the next Galaxy Z Fold is launched, it would be the first time we would be seeing a water drop hinge that is also waterproof, hinting at an IPX8 rating.

More recently launched devices like the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2, the Vivo X Fold+, and the Oppo Find N2 have utilised the new droplet or water drop hinge. The new design allows the display to occupy a larger space within the hinge, which leads to less creasing. This hinge design also lets both halves of the device sit flat against each other (with no gaps) when folded, which prevents dust and dirt from entering the inner display.

While most manufacturers have adopted this hinge, they have done so without an official IP rating. It will be interesting to see how Samsung goes about delivering this feature, which has been a standard on recent Galaxy foldables. Samsung’s most recent Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 have an IPX8 rating, meaning that they are sufficiently protected from water but not dust.

A recent report also revealed that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 will feature a standard S-Pen stylus holder, which could also be the reason why it’s expected to be thicker (6.5mm when unfolded) and heavier (275 grams) than previous models. The upcoming device is also said to pack a previously unheard of Qualcomm Snapdragon 985 5G SoC, which, according to GizmoChina, is yet to be announced. The chip manufacturer has not yet shared any details regarding this particular processor, which also has an odd naming convention, keeping in mind Qualcomm’s recent SoCs. The same report also states that the Galaxy Z Fold 5 was earlier set to arrive with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 2 processor instead. There is, however, no official word from Samsung on the same, and hence, the information should be taken with a pinch of salt.
