Samsung’s Galaxy AI Update Hints at the Possibility of Expanding the Features to More Devices

Samsung could expand its native artificial intelligence (AI) suite of features for its smartphones, Galaxy AI, to more devices. On Wednesday, the South Korean tech giant announced a new update to Galaxy AI that added support for new languages and dialects. In the same post, the company hinted that the suite of features could be introduced to more devices soon. This has led to speculation on whether these features can be brought to older devices such as the Galaxy S22 series.

This potential teaser by the company was first spotted by 9to5Google. Towards the end of the announcement post of increasing the number of supported languages for Galaxy AI, the company also listed the devices that currently support the AI features. The post stated, “The newly supported Galaxy AI languages and dialects will each be available for download as a language pack from the Settings app across all devices that support Galaxy AI. That includes the Galaxy S24 series, Galaxy S23 series, Galaxy S23 FE, Galaxy Z Flip5, and Galaxy Tab S9 series, with more coming soon.”

The reason for speculation is the last four words of the paragraph. So far, there has been confusion on whether the company was going to support devices older than the Galaxy S23 series for the AI features, given some of the features were offered on-device that required powerful hardware to carry out the processing. Last month, a report revealed that TM Roh, the President of Samsung’s mobile division, said in a shareholders’ meeting in Seoul, “Resources and efforts are being invested. We are gradually preparing plans to support a fully-fledged Galaxy AI experience [in the S22 series and older Samsung devices].”

However, other reports also highlighted that it might not be possible to bring these features to older devices given the hardware limitations. Although the post does not clarify whether it meant newer midrange Galaxy smartphones and Galaxy Books lineup, or older devices. One suggested way to support older devices is by making all the features on-server so the device does not have to bear the stress of managing the processing. Another method could be optimising these features for older devices. If this is done, users may not be able to experience the full experience of the feature but will still be able to use it in some form.

Adding Galaxy AI capabilities to a wider range of devices is also in the best interest of Samsung. At the time of launching the feature alongside the Galaxy S24 series, the company said that these features would be free to use until the end of 2025, and a subscription fee might be charged afterwards. If the suite of features reaches more users, the smartphone maker will stand to rake in more revenue through this service.

Samsung’s Galaxy AI Features Could Be Expanded to the Galaxy S22 Series: Report

Samsung could expand its Galaxy AI, the suite of artificial intelligence features which are currently only available on the Galaxy S24 series, to its older Galaxy S22 series as well, as per a report. Earlier, the tech giant had confirmed that the AI features would be added to the Galaxy S23 series, Galaxy Z Fold 5, Galaxy Z Flip 5, and the Galaxy Tab S9 series as a part of its upcoming One UI 6.1 update, but it did not include the Galaxy S22 lineup.

However, according to a report by South Korean news outlet Naver News, TM Roh, the President of Samsung’s mobile division, revealed that some of the Galaxy AI features could be expanded to the Galaxy S22 series while speaking at the company’s 55th regular shareholders’ meeting in Seoul. Notably, the Galaxy S22 series comprises the vanilla Samsung Galaxy S22Galaxy S22+, and the Galaxy S22 Ultra.

As per Roh, the main issue in expanding Galaxy AI features to older devices is that some of the features are on-device. These features require high hardware capabilities that are not possible in devices that are too old. Samsung has found that the cut-off point exists in the Galaxy S22 series. “Resources and efforts are being invested. We are gradually preparing plans to support a fully-fledged Galaxy AI experience [in the S22 series and older Samsung devices],” Roh said in the meeting as per the report (translated via Google). It is not known why the South Korean tech giant is not adding the cloud-based AI features of Galaxy AI in older devices.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy S23 series, the Galaxy Tab S9 series, as well as the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and the Galaxy Z Fold 5 are all set to receive Galaxy AI features with the One UI 6.1 update that is expected to be released by the end of this month. The first Galaxy AI feature that is making its way to the company’s older phones and tablets is Circle to Search, which adds the ability to draw a circle around, highlight, or select objects and text in images to search on Google — without leaving the current app.

Other Galaxy AI features such as Live Translate, Chat Assist, Interpreter mode, Note Assist, Browsing Assist, and Transcript Assist will also be expanded to these Samsung devices.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Series Reportedly Receiving One UI 6 Update Based on Android 14

Samsung Galaxy S22 series has reportedly started receiving the Android 14 update in the UK and European countries in line with the recently confirmed rollout schedule. The update brings One UI 6— the latest custom skin by the South Korean company — along with the November 2023 Android security patch to the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+, and Galaxy S22 Ultra smartphones. The Android 14 update reportedly comes with firmware version S908BXXUDWK4 and is 3GB in size. The current Galaxy S23 series received the stable Android 14-based One UI 6.0 update in the last week of October.

As per multiple posts on X, One UI 6 update based on Android 14 for Samsung Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+, and Galaxy S22 Ultra is currently rolling out in the UK and European countries including the Netherlands. The update is said to have a size of 3GB and carry firmware version S906BXXU6DWK4, S906BOXM6DWK4 or S906BXXU6DWK4 depending on the variant and region. It also brings the November Android security patch to Galaxy S22 series handsets in the above-mentioned regions, as per the reports.

Currently, the Galaxy S22’s stable One UI 6 build is available for beta participants. Once the rollout is complete for all beta users, it will reach devices running on Android 13. The update adds core Android 14 features alongside One UI 6 tweaks to the Galaxy S22 family. The quick settings panel and Samsung DeX will get improvements while there will be a few lock screen customisations and new camera controls. The update brings a fresh system font, new widgets, and adds a new emoji style to the Samsung keyboard.

Eligible Samsung Galaxy S22 series smartphones will receive the latest update automatically over the air. Users can also manually check for the update by heading to Settings > Software update > Download and Install. It is recommended to update the handsets while they are connected to a strong Wi-Fi network and are charging.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 trio received the update to Android 14 with One UI 6 in India and other regions in October last week. Besides the Galaxy S series flagships, Samsung is expected to seed the stable Android 14 to recent foldable smartphones and the Galaxy S23 FE by the end of this week.

Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series of smartphones was launched earlier this week and the South Korean firm’s high-end handsets have seen a few upgrades across all three models. Samsung’s One UI 5.1 software update was unveiled earlier this month during the first Galaxy Unpacked event of the year that saw the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S23 series. The update doesn’t bring major UI changes compared to the One UI 5.0 update. However, it includes the Expert RAW feature, which enables users to take high-quality images. The South Korean tech giant has reportedly begun rolling out the One UI 5.1 update for its other flagship Galaxy models. The foldable Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 are among the first Samsung handset to get this update.

According to a GSMArena report, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4, along with the Galaxy S22 series have started receiving the Android 13-based One UI 5.1 update.

Samsung previously revealed that the Galaxy S23 will boot One UI 5.1 out-of-the-box.

Meanwhile, SamMobile reports that the older Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S20 lineups have also started receiving One UI 5.1 update. Galaxy S20 series users in Europe are reportedly receiving the update with firmware version G98xxXXUFHWAK. The report claims that this could be the last Android version update for the Galaxy S20 handsets.

Samsung previously revealed that One UI 5.1 brings updated camera abilities. Users can change hues using the “Effects” button while taking selfies. The new Expert RAW feature enables users to take high-quality images from the Advanced menu of the camera app. The Notes app can now be used to collaborate with other users. Furthermore, users can invite others to collaborate on shared albums, notes, and calendars, Samsung says.

DeX Mode has been refined in One UI 5.1 to make multi-tasking easier. Samsung says that users to control their Galaxy smartphones and tablets with the same mouse that is being used to control a Samsung Galaxy Book — Apple offers a similar Universal Control feature on compatible devices.

“We have clocked almost 1.4 lakh units as pre-book in the first 24 hours and this is almost two times of Galaxy S22. With an average price of about a lakh of rupees, the turnover on a pre-book is almost Rs. 1,400 crore within 24 hours,” he said.

The phone will come with a set of five cameras with sensors in the range of 12-megapixels to 200-megapixels.

There is no exact date set for the rollout, however, it will be released by the end of October.

Samsung held the SDC 2022 on Thursday where it announced that the Galaxy S22 series will be receiving the stable version of the One UI 5 by the end of October. However, the release timeline may vary depending on the region.

The One UI 5 beta is already available for the Galaxy S22 smartphones in India. Previously, it was tipped that Samsung could launch the stable One UI 5 version for the Galaxy S22 series on either October 17 or October 19.

Unfortunately, Samsung did not hint at other Galaxy smartphones receiving the stable One UI 5 update any time soon. Thus, the Galaxy S21 series, Galaxy Z Fold 4, Galaxy Z Flip 4, Galaxy Z Fold 3, and Galaxy Z Flip 3 users may have to wait until 2023 to get the Android 13-based One UI 5.

These include new personalisation options such as custom-built Modes and Routines, and a Dynamic Lock Screen. Samsung Galaxy S23 Series Tipped to Get Same Screen Size, Resolution as Galaxy S22

Samsung Galaxy S23 is expected to be the South Korean company’s next flagship smartphone series. Rumours and leaks about the smartphone series have started to pour in bunches. As per a tipster, the handsets in the Galaxy S23 series will have almost similar dimensions as the Galaxy S22 handsets. The tipster also claims that the phones belonging to both the series will have identical screen size and resolution. Reports have even suggested that the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is said to feature the same rear camera design as the Galaxy S22 Ultra.

Tipster Ice Universe shared a post on Weibo giving information as well as comparing the dimensions of both Samsung Galaxy S23 series and the Galaxy S22 series. The tipster claims that the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S23 smartphones will have the same screen size — 6.1-inches — and resolution — 1,080×2,340 pixels. However, there could be slight differences in the dimensions. The Galaxy S22 measures 146.0×70.6×7.6mm, while the Galaxy S23 is said to measure 146.3×70.9×7.6mm.

Similarly, the Galaxy S22+ and Galaxy S23+ smartphones are said to sport the same screen size — 6.6-inches — and resolution — 1,080×2,340 pixels. There could be subtle differences in the dimensions. The Galaxy S22+ measures 157.4×75.8×7.64mm, whereas the Galaxy S23+ could measure 157.8×76.2×7.6mm.

Finally, the Galaxy S22 Ultra and Galaxy S23 Ultra Screen size and resolution are also claimed to be the same: 6.8-inches and 1,440×3,088 pixels, respectively. The Galaxy S22 Ultra measures 163.3×77.9×8.9mm and the S23 Ultra is said to measure 163.4×78.1×8.9mm in dimension.

The development comes a few days after the same tipster claimed that the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra will feature a rear camera module with a look and feel similar to that of its predecessor, the Galaxy S22 Ultra. It consists of a quad-camera setup headlined by a 108-megapixel primary camera, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera with a 120-degree field of view, and two 10-megapixel sensors. The Galaxy S23 may come with a 200-megapixel main camera sensor.
