Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 vs Exynos 2400: Gaming Test Video Suggests the Gap Is Closing

The highly anticipated Samsung Galaxy S24 series went official last week. While the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC in the US, they run on Samsung’s in-house Exynos 2400 in most other territories, including India. The Galaxy S24 Ultra, in contrast, is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy in all markets. Early benchmark results indicated that Exynos 2400 drags behind the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. However, the chipsets have been pitted against each other in a new gaming test video measuring how powerful the CPUs and GPUs are. The video shows that Samsung’s flagship SoC manages to stay on par with Qualcomm’s offering while playing games like PUBG, Call of Duty, and Fortnite.

Technology channel NL Tech has released a 43-minute video on YouTube that compares the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC-powered Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra alongside the Exynos 2400-powered Galaxy S24+ in real-world gaming performance. The examination included popular titles such as FortniteGenshin Impact, PUBG Mobile, PUBG New State, Call of Duty: Mobile, War Thunder, and Mobile Legends. The YouTuber has enabled Samsung’s Game Booster and “Alternate game performance management” on the new handsets to ensure maximum capabilities before starting the tests.

 

Both Galaxy S24+ and Galaxy S24 Ultra performed similarly in Genshin Impact and PUBG Mobile by maintaining 60fps (frame per second). In PUBG New State, both phones managed to keep a stable frame rate of around 90fps. The phones achieved 60fps in Mobile Legends and both chips maintained 90fps, sometimes dropping to 70fps, in Fortnite.

The video highlights that the Snapdragon-powered Galaxy S24 Ultra led in Call of Duty: Mobile by maintaining a smooth 120fps. The Exynos-powered Galaxy S24+, on the other hand, was capped at 60fps. The Exynos 2400 makes a comeback by outperforming the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC in War Thunder by reaching 100fps backed by its Xclipse 940 GPU while the Snapdragon throttled down to 40fps.

The tests showed that both Exynos 2400 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipsets come neck and neck in delivering smooth gaming performance. Despite initial concerns, Samsung’s in-house chipset was able to stay on par with Qualcomm’s offering without any major performance discrepancy in games. The tests were carried out on pre-production hardware and the results might change after Samsung releases further optimisations.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 vs Exynos 2400: Benchmarks Hint Samsung’s Chip May Be Almost as Fast as Its Competitor

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is currently one of the most powerful Android flagship chipsets available today and the chipset is expected to power several flagship smartphones in the coming months — including the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S24 series. The company is reportedly planning to equip some of the handsets in the lineup with an Exynos 2400 chip in most markets. Recent benchmarks of the chip suggest that Samsung’s in-house flagship chip might not be too far behind Qualcomm’s most capable processor.

Previous Exynos flagship chips have trailed their Qualcomm counterparts in terms of performance, but recent entries on the benchmarking website Geekbench (via SamMobile) have shown that the Exynos 2400 chip — expected to power some of the phones in the Galaxy S24 series — has shortened the lead of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

The purported Samsung Galaxy S24+ with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip scored 2,297 points in the single-core test and 7,104 points in the multi-core test on Geekbench. On the other hand, the Geekbench 6 test for the Samsung Galaxy S24+ with an Exynos 2400 chip shows the phone scored 2,193 points and 6,895 points in the single-core and multi-core tests, respectively.

As SamMobile points out, these scores show a marked improvement for the Samsung Galaxy S24+ with an Exynos 2400 chip, compared to earlier benchmarks. In the past, the Qualcomm chip was 8 percent and 5 percent faster in the single-core and multi-core tests, but the latest tests show they have dropped to 4 percent and 3 percent, closing the gap between both chipsets.

It is worth noting that these are early benchmarks of purported phones that are yet to be released. The scores of these handsets could vary once they are launched. Similarly, benchmarks do not provide the complete picture — the capability of both chips to handle sustained workloads without throttling can be measured once the phones are launched by the company.

Unlike last year, when Samsung equipped the entire Galaxy S23 series with a customised Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy chip, this year’s top of the line Galaxy S24 Ultra is rumoured to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, while the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ is said to be equipped with either the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 or Exynos 2400 in different markets.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Series Could Offer Satellite Communication Support: Report

Samsung Galaxy S24 series is likely to offer satellite communication support, according to details reportedly shared by a company executive. According to a Sisa Journal-E report (translated from Korean), Samsung Electronics System LSI Business Head Yong-In Park stated during a recent presentation that the South Korean tech conglomerate was preparing to offer support for satellite communication on its smartphones next year. With the Samsung Galaxy S24 series of smartphones expected to debut in Q1 2024, these handsets are likely to be the first to support the feature.

According to the report, the Samsung executive said that the company has already made preparations to support smartphone communications using a satellite. Yong-In Park, who made the announcement at the 2023 Semiconductor Expo, did not specify a timeline for the functionality to be enabled, or reveal which phones would support the feature. 

It is worth noting that Apple announced support for non-terrestrial networks (NTN) communication via its Emergency SOS satellite feature with the iPhone 14 series of smartphones in 2022, and the company’s latest phones — including the iPhone 15 Pro Max — also support the feature. Earlier this year, Qualcomm announced Snapdragon Satellite support on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, but the feature was not enabled on the Samsung Galaxy S23 series of smartphones.

On the other hand, Samsung’s own Exynos 5300 modem that features on its Exynos 2400 mobile processor as well as Google’s Tensor G2 (Pixel 7) and Tensor G3 (Pixel 8) chips, also supports NTN connectivity. Samsung is yet to reveal whether it will enable support for satellite communication on its Exynos 2400 chip — expected to power the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ — or the recently unveiled Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip that is tipped to power the top-of-the-line Galaxy S23 Ultra handset.

It’s also unclear whether Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series of smartphones — comprising the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, and Galaxy S23 Ultra — as well as the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 will offer support for emergency satellite connectivity. TM Roh, president and head of Samsung’s mobile experience business division, previously stated that satellite functionality was still quite restricted on smartphones and that it was too soon to implement the feature on Samsung handsets.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Series Could Launch Early Next Year; Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+ May Get Deca-Core Exynos SoC

As the leaks about Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series intensify, there is now a hint of its launch timeline as well. In contrast to the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 launch, which took place in South Korea this year, Samsung is expected to hold its next Galaxy Unpacked launch event in the US next year. At the launch, Samsung is expected to reveal its new premium flagships, which will replace the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, and Galaxy S23 Ultra models that were launched earlier this year. There’s also more information about the new Exynos 2400 processor that Samsung showcased a few weeks ago and is expected to make it into two Galaxy S24 models this year.

As per SEDaily, Samsung will go ahead with its routine US launch for its Galaxy S24 series next year. The source claims that the location of the launch event will be just an hour-long drive from Apple’s Cupertino headquarters. As for the timeline, the source simply states that it will be announced “early next year”, which suggests a January, 2024 launch.

The Samsung Galaxy S24 and the bigger Galaxy S24+ models are expected to be available with Exynos SoC in certain markets, while others could get the latest Qualcomm silicon, which is expected to be the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. More details about Samsung’s recently unveiled Exynos 2400 SoC have also leaked out.

Tipster Ice Universe shared a screenshot of a Geekbench test of the upcoming Galaxy S24+, which has also surfaced on the benchmarking website suggesting more details about the processor’s architecture. The smartphone tagged as the ‘samsung SM-S926B’ managed 2,067 points and 6,520 points in Geekbench’s single and multi-core tests respectively.

The SoC from the results appears to have a deca-core architecture. Its prime Cortex-X4 core is clocked at 3.21GHz. Meanwhile, its five Cortex-A720 performance cores have two clocked at 2.9GHz and three others clocked at 2.6GHz. Lastly, there’s four Cortex-A520 efficiency cores clocked at 1.95GHz each.

There is also new information about the next-generation Exynos 2500 SoC that has leaked out. Tipster @OreXda has suggested that the Exynos 2500 will also feature a deca-core architecture, that is different from the octa-core architecture for the same SoC, which was shared earlier.
