Google’s Circle to Search Feature Rolling Out to Pixel 6 Series, Samsung Galaxy S23 Lineup, and More

Google’s Circle to Search was introduced in January this year with the Samsung Galaxy S24 series. This was packed alongside a few other AI-backed features like Live Translate and Note Assist. However, later that month, with the January Pixel feature drop, the tech giant brought the feature to the Pixel 8 models. Earlier in March, the company also extended this feature to the Pixel 7 lineup. Now, Google has announced that more Android handsets will have access to the Circle to Search tool.

The Mountain View-based search giant has confirmed that the feature is “currently rolling out to more Android devices”. The rollout will begin this week and it will be available on the Google Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 7a, Pixel Fold, and Pixel Tablet. It will also be available on the Samsung Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, Galaxy S23 Ultra, Galaxy S23 FE, Galaxy Z Fold 5, and Galaxy Z Flip 5 as well as the Galaxy Tab S9 series.

As of today, Google’s Circle to Search feature is already available in several flagship handsets including Samsung Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, Galaxy S24 Ultra, Google Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 8, and Pixel 8 Pro.

Google also mentioned in the post that the Circle to Search feature can help users shop for specific styles or items without much hassle. It can also assist users during their travels to foreign places, especially ones with a different language than their native ones, by instantly translating anything that is on their screen. All users need to do is long-press the home button or navigation bar and tap the translate option.

The Circle to Search feature allows users to search anything, instantly, without switching apps with a few gestures. Users can circle, scribble, highlight or tap anything on their screen, like images, part of an image or text, and opt for the search option. It not only gives information quicker but with Generative AI support, it is meant to aid in more complex research.

Google Pixel 8 Series Alleged Promo Video Tips ‘Audio Magic Eraser’ Feature, New Colour Option

Google introduced its Magic Eraser feature with the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro back in 2021. This machine learning and AI-based photo editing feature used to remove unwanted objects in photos is now more widely available. The California-headquartered company could add a similar feature for videos in the upcoming Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. An alleged promo video suggests the existence of ‘Audio Magic Eraser’ in the Pixel 8 series. The leak also indicates a blue colour option for the vanilla Pixel 8.

An X (formerly Twitter) user EZ (@EZ8622647227573) has posted the alleged promo video of the Pixel 8 series. The 14-second video teases a new ‘Audio Magic Eraser’ feature in the upcoming Pixel smartphones. The video shows skateboarders using a new feature to remove unwanted noise from video clips. The Audio Magic Eraser button is shown among the controls in Google Photos.

This promo video comes with the tagline “the only phone with Audio Magic Eraser” and Google’s existing line for Pixel handsets — the only phone engineered by Google. At the end of the clip, the Pixel 8 is shown in a blue shade as well.

Google released Magic Eraser in Pixel 6 series smartphones back in 2021. This functionality is designed to remove unwanted background elements from a shot with few taps. The company rolled out this feature to more non-Tensor-powered smartphones last year.

The Pixel 8 series is said to go official in October this year. Both smartphones are tipped to run on Android 14 and come with a 120Hz refresh rate display. They are expected to powered by a Tensor G3 SoC, which would come as an upgrade to the Tensor G2 SoC, used in Pixel 7 series and Pixel Fold.

The smartphones could debut in 128GB and 256GB storage options. The Pixel 8 Pro is expected to pack a 4,950mAh battery with 27W wired fast charging support. The Pixel 8, on the other hand, is said to carry a 4,485mAh battery with 24W wired charging and 12W wireless charging support.

EU Working on 5-Year Update Standard for Android Phones, Improved Battery Longevity: All Details

Smartphone manufacturers may have to start offering three years of major Android updates and five years of security patches in the European Union, according to a new draft regulation. The proposed changes could increase the life span of smartphones and other devices to up to 5 years with the helo of extended software support, which is said to be equivalent of removing 5 million cars off the roads. The European Commission has already closed the feedback window for member nations. and is currently accepting feedback from the public until September 28.

According to a report by 9to5Google citing a draft regulation draft regulation, the European Commission has proposed several measures aimed at Android smartphone manufacturers, with the goal of reducing e-waste. As per the report, the commission has proposed that smartphone brands and manufacturers should start providing three years of major updates or Android version updates, and five years of Android security patches in European Union and its member nations.

The move is expected to increase the lifespan of handsets to five years, which is equivalent to the removal of 5 million cars from the roads, as per the draft regulation. According to the report, the proposed update schedule is similar to the one offered by Google for its Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro smartphones. The commission has also proposed that companies should also offer at least 5 years of repair and after-sales services.

The European Commission has also proposed that the European Union should require all smartphone brands to install batteries that can retain at least 83 percent of its rated capacity after 500 charge cycles, and 80 percent after 1,000 cycles.

For now, only Apple claims that the batteries on iPhone models can retain up to 80 percent of their rated capacity after 500 charge cycles. The commission is currently accepting feedback from the public till September 28, and aims to implement the new rules by in 2024.

In June, the European Union reportedly finalised a deal that forces all smartphone brands to adopt the USB Type-C port. Apple is tipped to start shipping iPhone models in the European Union with a USB Type-C port in 2024, in place of its proprietary Lightning connector.

Google Pixel 7 Series Alleged Hands-On Video Shared Online; Said to Get Up to 12GB RAM

Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro early hands-on video has been shared by a YouTuber online. Both the models of the upcoming Google smartphones were allegedly early developer versions, and the phones were only seen with the bootloader screen. In the video, the YouTuber also shared some hardware specifications and design features of the two Google smartphones. The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro were also featured in the video to compare them with the alleged early developer versions of the Google Pixel 7 and Pixel Pro.

YouTube channel Unbox Therapy has shared a hands-on video of the alleged early developer versions of the Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. The video suggests that the upcoming PIxel smartphones will retain the horizontal layout for the rear camera module. The Pixel 7 can be seen with a dual rear camera setup, and the Pixel 7 Pro with a triple rear camera setup.

The Google logo on both the handsets could be placed in the center of the rear panel, as per the video. According to the YouTuber, the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro will feature a “visor-like” design. It was also mentioned that the Pixel 6 Pro is a little taller and thicker than the Pixel 7 Pro, as per the video. The Pixel 7 is said to be significantly shorter in height when compared to the Pixel 6. Both the upcoming Google smartphones could sport slimmer bezels than the Pixel 6 series. The Pixel 7 series is also said to be thinner than the Pixel 6 series, but with identical rear camera module thickness.

The Pixel 7 Pro early developer version was seen in the video with 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of storage. The bootloader screen of the Pixel Pro also suggests ‘cheetah EVT1.1′ code name, as seen in the Unbox Therapy video. The Pixel 7, on the other hand, can be seen featuring 8GB of Samsung LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB storage. The handset can be seen with the codename ‘panther EVT1.1′. As per the video, the Pixel 7 Pro could feature polished right and left spines, whereas, the Pixel 7 could get matte finish sides. Both the handsets are said to also support wireless charging, according to the YouTuber.

At the front, the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro can be seen in the Unbox Therapy video with a hole-punch display. The Pixel 7 Pro could get a slightly bigger hole-punch cut out, the YouTuber said. The YouTuber also weighs the Pixel 7 series handsets. The Pixel 7 is said to be about 10g lighter than the Pixel 6, and the Pixel 7 Pro is said to be about a gram heavier than the Pixel 6 Pro.

To recall, Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro were teased at the Google I/O 2022 keynote event. Both the flagship phones are said to launch later this year. They are teased to be powered by the next generation Tensor SoC, and run on Android 13 out-of-the-box.

Google Working on Pixel 6 Face Unlock Feature, Could Depend on Under-Display Fingerprint Sensor: Report

Google is said to be continuing its work on bringing the facial recognition feature to the Pixel 6. Future devices, including the upcoming the Pixel 7 series also expected to benefit from this feature. According to a new report citing industry sources, Google could be working on using the under-display fingerprint sensor in conjunction with the face unlock feature. This approach is reportedly energy efficient and is expected to work on a wide range of Pixel smartphones. Notably, the Pixel 6 Pro was rumoured to come with face unlock, however, the feature was reportedly pulled close to its launch.

According to a 9to5Google report, Google is developing a version of face unlock that also uses the under-display fingerprint sensor. This new feature reportedly works by lowering the recognition threshold for the fingerprint sensor when the smartphone partially recognises a face. The accuracy requirement of a fingerprint match would be significantly lowered, as per the report.

Notably, this new feature does not require any new hardware to function as intended. As such, this approach could bring the face unlock feature to both Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, and Google is reportedly testing this feature on these smartphones.

The use of face unlock with the fingerprint sensor could also function on the Pixel 6a and other a-series Google smartphones, according to the report. Even the upcoming Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro could also utilise this feature. Notably, this approach is said to be more energy efficient than the traditional face unlock feature.

The report further mentions that this new approach could be Google’s ploy to get the best out of the below-average under-display sensor on Pixel 6 series smartphones. The recognition speed of the sensor is said to be sluggish in comparison to the speeds offered by other flagship smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S22 lineup. Google is yet to officially announce plans to introduce a facial recognition-based system for its Pixel smartphone lineup.

Google Rolling Out May 2022 Update With a Fix for Weak Notification Vibrations on Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro

Google has started rolling out the May 2022 update for its Pixel phones that addresses weak notification vibrations specifically for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. The problem of weak notification vibrations surfaced earlier this year and was reported by a large number of users on both the latest Pixel phones. The May 2022 software update also fixes the display and launcher issues for all Pixel phones starting from the Pixel 3a to the Pixel 6 Pro.

As highlighted in the changelog available on the Community post, the May 2022 Pixel software update includes improvements for haptic feedback to enhance vibration alerts particularly on the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. These improvements are essentially aimed to address user complaints related to weaker vibrations that surfaced on platforms including Google’s support forum and Reddit after the March software update.

Users had complained at the time that following the March update, they were starting to miss text messages and calls due to weaker vibrations than what they were getting earlier.

The March update was, though, meant to offer features including Live Caption and Night Sight support for Snapchat. It also included bug fixes, including the ones for some Wi-Fi connectivity issues on the Pixel 6 series.

It was not the first time when an update introduced problems for Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro users. Last year, the December update caused call drop issues on both Pixel 6 models. Google had to pause that update to avoid its mass impact.

The May 2022 update also fixes the issue that was causing the display on the Pixel phone to wake without user interactions. It also addresses the problem that was resulting in a launcher crash after restarting the device. Both these fixes apply to all eligible Pixel phones, namely the Pixel 3a, Pixel 3a XL, Pixel 4, Pixel 4 XL, Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a (5G), Pixel 5, Pixel 5a (5G), Pixel 6, and the Pixel 6 Pro.

Google has also improved the security side of things with the latest update.

The May 2022 update for the Pixel phones running Android 12 will continue to roll out over the next week in phases. You can check for its arrival on your Pixel device by going to Settings > System > System update. Alternatively, you can get the factory images or OTA images of the update package from the Android Developers portal if you are aware of the risk involved in manually installing the new software version.
