Samsung Galaxy S21, Galaxy Z Fold 3, Z Flip 3 to Get Only Two Galaxy AI Features With One UI 6.1 Update

Samsung Galaxy S21 series is set to receive the One UI 6.1 update, along with the company’s Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 foldable phones. However, unlike more recent models from the South Korean smartphone maker, these three handsets will only gain support for two new Galaxy AI features. One the past few months, Samsung has been rolling out One UI 6.1 to recent Galaxy Z and Galaxy S series phones, with support for up to 10 AI-powered features.

The company confirmed on Friday that Samsung Galaxy S21 series, Galaxy Z Fold 3, and Galaxy Z Flip 3 users will get access to two Galaxy AI features: Circle to Search and Chat Assist. The company’s announcement also contains a footnote stating that it will provide Galaxy AI features “for free until the end of 2025” — the same message that was shown on the company’s website when the Galaxy S24 series was launched earlier this year. 

With the One UI 6.1 update, owners of the Samsung Galaxy S21 series, Galaxy Z Fold 3, and Galaxy Z Flip 3 will be able to use the Circle to Search feature that is currently exclusive to smartphones from Samsung and Google. Users can log press the navigation pill to summon an overlay that lets them draw around, scribble, or highlight a part of the screen to perform a visual lookup — without leaving the app they are using.

Chat Assist, another AI feature that is designed to help users compose texts in different languages, via seamless translation of incoming or outgoing messages, is also coming to all three handsets. Samsung says the feature is also designed to work with third party apps, which means users won’t have to open a translation app while messaging another user. Chat Assist is also designed to help users change the tone of their messages, according to the company.

Samsung’s announcement that it will update the Galaxy S21 series, Galaxy Z Fold 3, and Galaxy Z Flip 3 with these two features confirms that the company’s other Galaxy AI functionality won’t be making its way to these older handsets. AI features that won’t be a part of the update include Interpreter, Live Translate, Note Assist, Transcript Assist, Browsing Assist, Generative Edit, Edit Suggestion and AI-Generated Wallpaper.

Google Chrome Working on Feature Similar to Circle to Search on Android: Report

Google Chrome could introduce new features powered by artificial intelligence (AI) to users that could help them perform certain tasks easily on the browser. One of these new features is likely to be related to performing visual lookups while browsing the web. New information that has recently surfaced online suggests that Chrome is likely to bring a version of Google’s Circle to Search feature that arrived earlier this year with the Samsung Galaxy S24 series and is available on some Android smartphones.

X (formerly Twitter) user @Leopeva64 shared in a series of posts that Google Chrome is testing a new Lens UI element which is an animation, similar to the Circle to Search feature on Android phones. As per to videos shared in a series of posts, with this feature, there will be a dedicated Google Lens button in the toolbar on Chrome.

When the new Google Lens button is selected, a search icon appears next to the cursor and users can drag and select the portion of the screen they want to look up. The results related to the image or text in the selected area appear in a tab on the right side of the screen. This is similar to the Google Lens feature existing in Chrome, but it is expected to be presented as an improved version, allowing users to conduct searches by selecting elements on the screen.

Google is yet to officially confirm that such a feature is in development for the desktop version of its Chrome browser. However, Google Chrome Director of Engineering Adriana Porter Felt recently hinted that newer AI-backed features are likely to come to Chrome. 

Reading webpages, similar to summarisation tools that we see in Microsoft’s Copilot and Samsung’s Galaxy AI, could be a feature that Google Chrome’s AI-integrated upcoming features could include alongside the aforementioned Search-related feature, that could arrive on a future version of Chrome.

Samsung Galaxy AI Features Coming to Galaxy S23 and Other Models With One UI 6.1 Update

Samsung has announced that it will roll out its Galaxy AI features to owners of the company’s previously released smartphones and tablets as part of its upcoming One UI 6.1 update. This means that the company’s AI features that arrived with the Galaxy S24 series of smartphones, such has Circle to Search, Live Translate, Interpreter mode for phone calls, Instant Slow-mo for videos, Note Assist, Browsing Assist, and AI generated wallpapers will soon be available on older Samsung Galaxy devices.

The South Korean tech conglomerate announced on Thursday that its upcoming One UI 6.1 update will bring Galaxy AI features to the Samsung Galaxy S23 series, the Galaxy Z Fold 5, and Galaxy Z Flip 5 smartphones. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 series will also be updated to One UI 6.1, with support for the new AI features available on the Galaxy S24 lineup.

The first Galaxy AI feature that is making its way to the company’s older phones and tablets is Circle to Search, which adds the ability to draw a circle around, highlight, or select objects and text in images to search on Google — without leaving the current app. Samsung introduced this feature last month with the arrival of the Galaxy S24 series.

The upcoming update will also add Galaxy AI features to the company’s inbuilt applications such as Live Translate for phone calls, texting in 13 languages using Chat Assist, and an Interpreter mode for real time translation. The Samsung Notes, Samsung Internet, and Recorder apps will also get support for Note Assist, Browsing Assist, and Transcript Assist features, respectively.

Meanwhile, generative AI-powered features are coming to the company’s older Galaxy smartphones and tablets. Generative Edit will allow users to “resize, reposition or realign objects” in images, according to the company. Instant Slow-mo will automatically generate more frames to produce slow–motion videos from regular ones. 

Samsung says that the One UI 6.1 update that is based on Android 14 will be rolled out to the Galaxy S23 lineup, the Galaxy Z Fold 5, and Galaxy Z Flip 5, and the Galaxy Tab S9 series by the end of March. The company adds that some Galaxy AI features on the S24 series may not be supported on older models, and some features will require an Internet connection, a Samsung account, or the company’s inbuilt applications.

Google Brings Circle to Search, Magic Compose, More to Pixel 8 Pro With January Feature Drop

Google’s January Pixel feature drop is now available to download, unlocking new functionality on the company’s latest Pixel 8 lineup. According to details shared by the search giant, the January feature drop update comes with the new Circle to Search feature found on the Galaxy S24 series of smartphones that was unveiled by Samsung earlier this month. It also makes the thermometer sensor on the Pixel 8 Pro more useful, and brings generative AI features to the flagship phone.

With the January Pixel feature drop, Google has brought the new Circle to Search feature that arrived on the Galaxy S24 series to the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. You can long press the navigation bar — or home button — and circle, scribble, or highlight images and text on the screen to perform a search without leaving the app. This feature will go live on January 31, in time for the arrival of the Galaxy S24 series.

The Pixel 8 Pro is also getting a option within the thermometer app, allowing owners of the high-end Pixel phone to record their body temperature. Google says that the “medical grade” feature will let you record body temperatures of any person, but you can choose to store your own records using the Fitbit app. The standard Pixel 8 and older models aren’t equipped with this sensor, so the feature won’t be available on those handsets.

Magic Compose powered by Google’s on-device Gemini Nano AI model is also available on the Pixel 8 Pro with the latest feature drop. You can pick from four different writing styles — Chill, Excited, Formal, and Shakespearean. Similarly, the Photomoji feature is now available on all currently supported Pixel phones, allowing you to turn photos on your phone into emoji that you can use for message reactions.

With the January Pixel feature drop, Google has rebranded the Nearby Share feature to Quick Share, a feature offered by Samsung alongside Google’s feature. This change was previously announced by the company and will roll out to all Android smartphones in the future. Meanwhile, owners of the Pixel Watch 2 will now experience seamless switching between their devices, when they’re using the Pixel Buds Pro, according to the company.
